Launceston Golf Club

North-East, TAS | User Rating: Rate-3 (3.5) | Add A Review

The Launceston Golf Club, Tasmania’s oldest 18 Hole Golf Course established in 1899, is situated between the leafy residential suburb of Norwood and bustling shopping centre of Kings Meadows. It is easily accessible 5km south of Launceston and just 6km from Launceston airport.

The Launceston Golf Club has a proud reputation locally and interstate for the presentation of its facilities and as an excellent test of golfing ability. The 5987 metre par 72 layout provides something for all golfers whether a beginner or seasoned golfer.

Carved out of natural bushland it provides the golfer with well manicured greens, strategically placed bunkers on every hole and eucalyptus tree lined fairways. With stands of black wood and wattle trees throughout the course you are unaware of the close proximity of the surrounding hustle & bustle of the suburbs. The undulating layout makes it very easy to walk throughout your round of golf or if you prefer electric cart hire is available.

The Launceston Golf Club is a great venue for a days golf and societies are always given a warm welcome. It is located just off the A30 and the first golf club as you cross the Cornish border. It have regular repeat societies who choose it as part of their Cornwall tour or as their away day venue each year. They offer various packages or can customize one to suit your needs.

Played March 10. Certainly an older course in layout and structure. Fairways are wide enough but the rough will get you cussing! Very heavy grain on the greens, really had you guessing and can spoil the results of otherwise good play. First is a real tease but then the course gets serious. 12th is a great hole.

Bring every club in the bag, there is plenty of opportunity to use them.

A bit of a sleeper in terms of quality and value but I disagree it is "best after Barnbougle".

I agree with the previous comment of being overrated, despite being one of the better courses in the North. I have played a lot of rounds here over the years, but never found myself wanting to become a member.

PROS

  • Well stocked pro shop
  • First class clubhouse facilities
  • Greens & fairways usually quite good

Cons

  • exorbitant membership fees attract the 'snobs'
  • No proper driving range (used to, but got closed)

Played twice Feb 09,just after Tasmanian Open so course was in reasonably good condition, though like many others in Tasmania could do with more water.
Interesting layout that utilises most clubs in the bag,& punishes errant shots like a good course should do.PLenty of variety, with doglegs left & right mixed with straight holes almost always with features to make yu think about how you should play them.
Well worth a hit,& was probably the next best course to Barnbougle we played in tasmania

Measures 6013m Par 72 from the back plates where I played it from with 3 Par 3s ranging from 150-190m, 12 Par 4s ranging 240-390m and three Par 5s ranging from 455-525m. Course is well maintained with well-bunkered greens and a tree-lined parkland course layout.

Holes are quite similar in approach, not many options off the tee for such a renowned course in northern Tas. Front nine is somewhat boring with similar approaches to the par 4s, but the back nine is the course's best attribute. Holes require more test of golf and wit than the front nine.

Worthy holes of note are the 510m Par 5 10th with creek along length of fairway to green on the left with bunker left and right of green. The 320m Par 4 12th has a narrow driving area with dogleg right and green that runs into lake behind. The 157m 13th is over a gully with an elevated tee and green protected by 3 bunkers forming a U-shape around the oval shaped green.

Played here 23/7/06 and paid $50 visitor green fees on this overrated course by locals. Course could be planned with more variety of holes extra Par 3 and Par 5 would not hurt, but still remain a par 72, just needs more efficient planning.
