Played here Friday 30/12/2011 for a tee-off time at 10:15am with a friend and we joined up with another friendly pair. Although it was during the holiday period, didn’t find play too slow although the pair behind us were absolute tools incl. standing on our tee box while tee-ing off at the first hole, hitting at us even though we were waiting for the group in front and swearing loudly every shot they hit. Should have been thrown off the course, they were a disgrace.

It was a hot day so greens were a bit quicker than normal but the fairways were lush and in good condition given it was the summer.

Appreciated the difficulty of the course with some interesting par 3s. Every 2nd hole on the back 9 are par 3s with a long one on the 10th hole (220m from white tees). While they were interesting, I would’ve preferred if there was an extra par 4 or two instead of 5 par 3s on the back 9.

Aesthetics were okay, long water hazard on the left of 2nd hole makes for an interesting one.

Overall, decent course for mid-handicappers kept in good condition.

PROS

  • Condition of the course
  • Reasonable difficulty for mid-handicappers
  • Location from eastern Melbourne suburbs

Cons

  • Too many par 3s

Being so close, I am able play here quite regularly. The course is currently in very good condition, fairways generally green and lush, with very good coverage. The greens are somewhat slow with the occasional unrepaired pitch marks.
This course has a nice mix of long and short holes. If you can shape your driver/woods off the tee, you will be well rewarded with the reachable greens. Being a mid-high handicaper (17.5) I find the course quite enjoyable! I suspect low handicapers may not find the course challenging.
Being a public course, it can be quite busy, and play can be a little slow. However, if you dont let it bother you, Malvern Valley golf course is a nice suburban course thats in good nick!

PROS

  • Good blend of long and short holes
  • Course in good condition
  • Cheap!

Cons

  • Not challenging for low handicappers
  • Greens a little slow

I’ve played here a number of times and find it a pretty solid little course, especially for a beginner. The front/back 9 are pretty different: I find the front 9 a little boring, but the back 9 is great fun with all the par 3s.

Played here today and I have to say that it is quite an interesting lay out with the back 9 having 5 par 3’s, but the front 9 is heaps of fun with a few risk vs reward holes.

The massive issue I have with this course is that it is really really SLOW. I mean really slow!!!

On the positive side, the pro shop is nice, the staff are friendly and the course is in pretty good nick considering we have not seen rain for a while.

All in all i may play here again but most likely not as I believe golf should not take close to 6 hours because a heap of 4-ballers don’t know how to wave through.

Don’t let that disappoint you, try it out for yourself.

Well conditioned course. Is rather short though and if you are a longer hitter you may find yourself never needing driver. The good thing compared with other shorter courses though is that there is still some risk associated when deciding to go longer. There definitely are trees bordering the fairway on some holes as well as well placed bunkers.

i believe that the greens were being cored when you played and would explian the amount of sand, Wonderful greens.

Went today… was very different from when I went 2 months ago. I quite enjoyed my experience 2 months ago but today.. the greens were like dead.. Each green is covered with significant amounts of sand that makes the greens play extremely slow and bumpy. Rather than putting on a green, it feels like your putting on synthetic grass.. There was a huge backlog of groups, so 18 holes ended up taking well over 5 hrs.

Yarra Bend, Freeway and Ivanhoe shits on this course. Wouldn’t advise anyone to play there unless until they really fix up the greens.

A good course to have as a local. The front 9 offers a good test of most clubs in the bag, although the back 9 is a bit on the short side.

After trying to book 9 holes on a Saturday, I was told I would not be allowed to play as I can not hit the ball as far as the others in our group. I am a female who has just started playing and can hit the ball roughly 120 metres with an iron but 9 times out of 10 the ball will go straight and on the fairway. I have previously played at Eynesbury (excellent course) where I was held up by a more experienced player who could hit the ball twice as far as me but we always ended up searching for the ball in the rough. I don’t know a lot about golf at the moment but I doubt that this attitude is going to attract new people to the sport any time soon.

Wonderful Service, greens well watered, rough could do with a tidy up. Callaway hire equipment, very up to date. Great range of golf equipment at very good price. AAA teaching pro

good public course sitting rite next to the monash freeway. the front 9 has a good layout and variety of holes which has i enjoy to play. back 9 has 5 par 3’s which will mean hold up’s and the reason its a par 67. being par 67 it’s not as short as some other public courses so it provides some challenge. not to expensive so when the mrs wants to go2 chadstone shopping centre dump her there and nick off here and play a quick 9 like i do.

Would be a nice little course…. except for the slow play and overbooking. Although it is only a par 67, allow a good 5-6 hours if playing on a weekday morning. I have played twilight during summer though and it is a lot quicker.

Malvern Valley is a lovely course which I have played a few times. The greens are fast, and normally consistent, and the layout presents a nice challenge from some of the other courses. It is quite short so, some accuracy is needed.

The fairways are similar to lawn, so not as good as some courses, however, seem to remain thick in drought conditions.

The only down side is like many other courses, we played the front nine in 2 hours 45 min the other day, so play it on a weekday

Very dry and grassless in some parts of the fairways. The 8th hole had a sprinkler going slap bang in the middle of the fairway, which we thought was ridiculous. Consequently, numerous large puddles were created (extra water hazards!). Greens were ok though. Not recommended.

Great little course, not to difficult, green are not always in the best nick, slightly inconsistant and often being plugged. Fairways are good and the layout is interesting, Throw in a few doglegs, some testy par 3's and the greenery surrounding the course and it is good value, especially on a weekday if you can fly through a round, if your confidence is down and you want to post a low score to feel good about yourslef go to the Valley

I have played here in the past and almost forgotten how good the course was. Firstly, I must say that the course was in great shape - they must have access to the creek water to maintain the fairways in such great condition. Secondly, only took two of us about 3.5 hrs to play 18-holes.

Not an overly long course, but will certainly test a few different aspects of your game (especially with water hazards on about 40-50% of the holes). Could do with a few more strategically placed bunkers - but overall, a very good experience.

Price was sensational too.

Just metres from the South Eastern freeway and only a stones throw from Chadstone Shopping Centre, you'd never know it as you play a round on this delightful little course. With interesting bends in the fairways, a great mixture of short and long holes and a very picturesque outlook, you could almost think you were out in the country. At $13 for 9 holes it's also refreshingly inexpensive. This is the most enjoyable course I've yet played on in Melbourne, if not anywhere.

quite a good public course even though it is a tad short..has always been kept in great condition with great fairways (greens are a little slow)...you cant go wrong here...best public course in the area in my opinion...closest that comes to it would be sandringhams back 9 holes.

After playing at many courses, I can say that Malvern Valley is good for a public course. With clean, bending fairways, with a beautiful backdrop of Gardiners Creek, I can say it is always an enjoyable day when playing at Malvern Valley. While the course is short when compared to other courses, the water that surrounds this course is dangerous. I have seen a scratch player loose 4 ball in a round of 18 and a 4-handicapper loose 3. If your in the area and are looking for a picturesque course and an enjoyable round of golf, Malvern Valley is an excellent choice.
