Another extremely hilly course close to the city with wonderful views of the Gulf St Vincent. The course itself is pretty ordinary with the fairways probably not in as good condition as they should be. At times the wind would really whip around the course making it very tough.
The fact is though that the course is really quite simple, highlighted by the two super short par 4’s at 244 metres and 236 metres. The 236 metre 4th dog-legs to the right and is very reachable.
Not a course to play if you are looking for any quality, or a gentle walk for that matter. Bring your hiking boots.

Great views from what is really pretty basic golf. Hilly(bring your fitness),and a couple of just plain dumb golf holes.Eg the 3rd and 8th are unrealistic to play well as other reviewers have mentioned. Greens are pretty ordinary on most holes. $11 for 9 holes.

Living in the local area for now, and picking up my game again I find myself playing 9 holes after work most weeks. Good coverae of grass on the fairways withouot being great, greens tend to be a bit uneven.
main proble with the course is the slop and while yes this is always a problem when you build on a hill, they need to do something about the 8th hole.
8th hole, its a par 5 of around 440 metres that runs along the side of the hill with the fairway sloping down the hill. You can hit a drive down the middle and it will roll off the fairway and down the hill and come close to being out of bounds. Granted this is more of a problem as a result of the drought and all of the course neing so dry.
All in all for a public course its as good as you can find in the metro area as long as you are fairly fit

Marion golf course is situated in the valley pretty much on Cement hill in southern Adelaide. A 9 hole with various pars. Difficult at times just locating the pin from tee off points. The course borders a quarry and you will need to cross the entrance road for the quarry to play two holes.
As the course is designed in a valley, winds off the beach tend to blow straight up the gulley and at times playing can be a challenge. Very fast but patchy greens. Play out of the rough on far side of course is virtually impossible as hard as rock and very scrubby.
Without a cart or buggy you will find the hilly nature of the course tiring and wishing you were at the clubhouse.

Marion measures 2730m Par 35 with three par 3s ranging from 145-201m, four par 4s ranging from 233-374m and two par 5s ranging from 444-477m.
Course has patchy kikuyu fairways and teebeds with some couch teebeds. The couch grass greens are slow and bumpy which is not ideal – but there is some hope in that the new temporary 6th green has bent grass sewn – hopefully they all become bent grass greens. There are 10 bunkers on the course.
Hilly start to your round with the first 3 holes, then you cross the road to play 4 & 5, which are weak, unbunkered and unchallenging holes, then you play holes 6-9 back to the clubhouse. Good holes include the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 6th and 9th.
1st-374m straight uphill with a right-sloping fairway with 2 fairway bunkers 200-220m off the tee on your left to a green guarded by a bunker 20m short left
2nd-169m elevated teeshot with a bunker short right – the tee is the highest point on the course with some good views of the gulf and city
3rd-477m Par 5 straight hole with a downhill teeshot with a blind 2nd shot over a crest to a green with 2 bunkers
4th-145m bunkerless green
5th-233m dogleg right bunkerless green
6th-372m dogleg right with an internal OOB on the right edge of the fairway which leads all players to play left centre off the tee to open up the hole
7th-315m straight hole and uphill with a long fairway bunker on the right 165-215m off the tee to avoid
8th-444m short Par 5 slight dogleg left uphill with a teeshot over the crest to an undulating fairway and a green with 2 bunkers shortside
9th-201m par 3 with a teeshot over a gully and a bunker short right
There are 18 alternate tee mounds which alter the Par on the 3rd, 5th and 9th – but mostly the same angle to the green. Played here 28/09/2011 with $12 green fees.
I hear there are plans to add more holes, but they really need to improve on the 9 holes they already have. They could start by improving the grass on the fairways, replacing the couch greens with bent grass greens and adding a few more bunkers. Not bad for the beginner but to entice better golfers the course conditioning must improve.
