Had a great time at Maryborough. Only got the back 9 in but was very good considering the drought. Smallish greens, that were fairly hard but not too fast. The fairways were also firm, but the new grass looks to be getting a good hold.

Two of us played, we hired a cart, all for a grand total of $38, Absolute bargin.

Loved this course. Carved out of the natural bush, this course is a real delight to both play and walk. Fortunately using reclaimed water, as the town is on severe restrictions, the fairways are reasonably good although a little patchy in places, not at all the fault of the club. Fairly narrow fairways, a challenge to play straight. Good and true greens. Very friendly staff. If your in the area, I highly recommend this course.

Compared to the other courses up in the goldfields area, maryborough is looking much greener, due to a more plentiful supply of water. The fairways were about 50-60% green grass...and the rest burnt brown patches.

The greens were not cut the day we were there due to a mower breaking the previous day, so the greens very very slow, but quite true to putt on.

As far as value value for money goes...this place is fantastic...9 holes on a Saturday afternoon, $13 with hardly anyone on the course...no marshalls to hassel you throughout your round...so if you are up around the Bendigo area...either hit this one or Bendigo Golf Club for a round...they are surviving the drought better than most.

Maryborough Golf Club is a lovley course situated just outside the township. Despite it's fairly short length (about 5700m) it's nonetheless quite demanding, as the fairways are generally tight & the greens quite small.
The bunkering, though light (already several new fairway bunkers have been added over last 2 years as part of a toughening/lengthening process, as well as new tees on 3, 7 & 14) is very good - well-cut lips and excellent sand quality bring the Melbourne Sandbelt to mind, though not nearly as severe, of course.

The thing I most love about Maryborough is the flora & fauna - the course is bordered by (& partly cut out of) a thick redgum forest, & throughout the tree-lined fairways are various other native trees & shrubs, most prominently the golden wattle, which is featured on the club logo. The birdlife is just amazing - score upon score of galahs, parakeets, rosettas, miners, among others, laughing & singing from trees, or swooping low in the afternoon, really create a fantastically natural, relaxed atmosphere in which to play golf.

I've been playing this course for a long time (10 years) & can say that it is only improving - some feat for a country course, given the current dry spell. Due to an ingenious decision to use the bore water from the town to water the course, it's currently in very good condition, which is more than you could say for other courses in the area. The greens & bunkers have always been excellent, but the in past years the fairways suffered in the heat. Now they're in really good, with excellent grass coverage all over the course.

Seriously, if you're ever in the Goldfields area, I urge you to play a round or two - the friendly members always welcome visitors, and at $15 a round, it's more than good value. A course on the up, this could be one to look out for in the future.
