Medway is a private members 18 hole golf course, situated beside the Maribyrnong River in Melbourne.

It’s not always easy making a course this enjoyable. Just ask one of our seven full time groundsmen. For along with the beautiful river-land location, the lush fairways and manicured greens you might expect of any first rate Members course, Medway Golf Club has spent over 60 years striving to remain resolutely individual. Whether it’s that pesky overhanging branch, or a bunker in “just the wrong spot”, that’s the way our members like it. You see, at Medway we have something a little out of the ordinary in golf courses. It’s called a golfer’s course. And you can’t ask for more than that.

In a concerted effort to remain one of the premier courses in the region, Medway Golf Club has, over the last three years, invested an enormous amount of time, effort and expense to upgrade the course.

With our new, perfectly manicured Santa Anna Couch fairways, strategically placed water hazards and mounding, Medway Golf Club has become even more challenging and picturesque than it has ever been.

Our tight and unique layout makes Medway one of the more testing courses in the region. But you don’t have to believe what we tell you, come and see for yourself.

As a golf digest top 100 course honorary judge.
A couple of key categories we judge on are :
- Shot Values – You will use every club in your bag playing Medway. Only issue I have is some of the rough not being fair on a ’fast’ fairawy surfaces and thick rough at the lower side – off a tee shot that lands in the middle of fairway.
- Memorability – Some holes like the 7th are never forgotten and the ’new’ 4th is good, as well as the subtly challenging 12th – this course has a different memory for each player.
- Conditioning – Fairways – Very good – Greens – above average. With all the works going on I see the ’Humped’ surrounds making it enjoyable for all calibre of golfer. Nice to get a kick towards the fairway!
Design Variety – I would like to say this course has a lot of positives for the style of course that it is. A more strategic course than you think at first glance. Being a par 70 you need defences -like 2 long par 3’s – small greens on short par 4’s as long as you make them subtle and true. Overall an enjoyable experience that has small surprises and will leave you scratching your head thinking ’I can’t wait to play this a second time because I should have shot better than that ! ’ A very friendly atmosphere – A slice of country in the city !
And for the record – I am a member. Objective one though !

I was fortunate enough to play Medway yesterday as a Member’s Guest and was impressed with the course presentation. Whilst the Santa Ana couch fairways were in good condition the highlight for me was the excellent greens – as good as I have experienced recently and I agree with previous Reviewers comments that the greens are pure and true with subtle breaks to test your skill (and nerve!). Certainly an interesting course lay-out with several challenging holes requiring a good deal of local knowledge to successfully negotiate. The sloping fairways require strategically placed tee shots and good course management is essential. I think most first timers at Medway would play well above their handicap – I certainly did!! although my score was not helped by leaving at least 8 shots in the bunkers due to my dreadful technique and not because of the bunkers which were generally in good condition. Unfortunately I was not able to assess the bar staff as my host and I had pressing engagements at the end of our round however the members encountered during the round were polite and friendly with a ready greeting which made for a really enjoyable round of golf (only spoilt by my score!). I too am looking forward to another invite!.

Played the course recently with a member and found it to be a joy. Fariways were very good (not sure what course jaygolfer and growler played but it certainly wasn’t Medway) greens were very true albeit quite small. The course layout is challenging and reminded me of some of the better country courses not what I was expecting in the middle of industralised Melbourne at all. As for the two long par 3’s I think they are great signature holes for the course providing it a distinction from the traditional boring Melbourne courses – Bring them on!!

They were doing the fairways when I played here about 5 years back and I decided to go back and play it again as I found it an interesting course last time.

I don’t know what Jaygolfer and Growler were talking about from last year, because the fairways are magnificent, plenty of grass, ball sits beautifully and there is less of that excess run that you normally get on santa ana courses.

Don’t know what they are doing but they need to keep doing it – this is the best condition member’s course on the West of Melbourne – Congratulations

Played here a couple of months ago as the guest of a member and for a Melbourne inner Western Suburbs clay based course, I was very pleasantly surprised at the condition of the course and the challenge it presented.

The 2006/07 summer drought had left many notable courses in Melbourne in relatively poor condition but Medway had lush santa ana couch fairways and dams full of water. The rough was rough but then I should not have been there. The poa annua greens were pure and true with subtle breaks, the bunkers presented a test of my short game and water or creeks were in play on 7 holes.

For an 8 marker, the course (5700+ metres, par 70) didn’t look like much of a test on paper but I came out quite a few shots the wrong side of 80. There were many traditional length holes mixed with two long par 3’s and two long 4’s. The shorter par 4’s looked benign but put the ball in the wrong place and they were brutish.

The Pro Shop and Bar staff were friendly and welcoming as were the members in some after game frivolity.

Looking forward to another invite soon!

I have played here twice now, and I still can't believe I went back.

Fairways are in awful condition. Course layout is boring, and in desperate need of an upgrade. 2 par 3s of something like over 220 metres is pretty crazy...one is enough!

Save yourself the $35 it costs with a member...Oh, and that clubhouse staff aren't too accomodating either.

Played the course recently and the couch fairways were terribly thin and very uneven. Course design is a little dated and could do with an upgrade. Very close to CBD and airport.

Two par threes at 210+ metres is crazy!
