A 500-metre tree lined drive from the entrance gates to the clubhouse offers the golfer a charming introduction to one of the prettiest golf courses on the North West Coast of Tasmania. Devonport, astride the Mersey River, is one of the four largest population centres in Tasmania and the fastest growing area outside of Hobart and Launceston.

Designed by Vern Morcom, who was also responsible for the Royal Hobart course, the Devonport layout measures 5880 metres with a par rating of 70 for Men and 5325 metres, Par 74 for Women. The current course record stands at 61 set by local member, and Head Greenkeeper, Stuart Matthewson in the 2nd round of the 2001 Morcom Cup.

“Woodrising” will be the host of the Tasmanian Open Golf Championships from 2005 to 2008. The event is held in mid February and draws players from interstate as well as overseas players. 2005 attracted players from Canada, Ireland, the UK and New Zealand.

The Senior Professional Open is run concurrently on the first two days of the Open and includes such players as Maurice Bembridge, John Clifford, Mike Ferguson, Paul Firmstone, Terry Gale, Brian Jones, Garry Merrick and Randal Vines.

A challenging course with very good bent greens and tight tree lined fairways. The course is carved through natural bush land so on most holes it pays to be straight. The fairways were in good condition and some holes are heavily bunkered which really make you think. A testing course for all hanicaps and a joy to play and at $30 a round good value for money.

Measures a moderate 5880m Par 70 with 4 Par 3s ranging from 135-200m, 12 Par 4s ranging from 310-405m and two Par 5s ranging from 425-460m. Greens are in quite good condition as are the teebeds, but the fairways are thinly covered, but green and can get sloshy with frost melting. Par 5s are quite weak in length and challenge. Many bunkerless Par 3s offer something for all, but the greens can be more heavily bunkered. Par 4s here are plentiful and are the course's best attributes.

Course is well-bunkered (in pockets) and has some greens that compliment the bunker complex. But some holes need more hazards and options off the tee, as I felt I was playing the same hole over and over.

Best holes are 405m Par 4 6th with slight dogleg left with fairway bunker on right about 150m to green. The closing 3 holes are tough to par if your drive is not straight as the tree-lined fairways cut the landing areas to smaller areas.

Played here 20/7/06 and paid $30 green fees. Average clubhouse for a good course.
