Millicent Golf Club

IN: COURSE DIRECTORY | REGION: Limestone Coast, SA | USER RATING: (5.0) | Add A Review

Situated in the Lower South East of South Australia, this picturesque Golf Course is an undiscovered haven for golfing afficianados. Set in the natural bushland of Southern Australia, this challenging course is 6,011 metres long. Wide rolling fairways are set in magnificent native bush.

Millicent Golf Course is held in high regard by the experts. The authoritative golfing magazine, "Australian Golf Digest" (March 2000 edition), ranked Millicent as 80th best course in Australia. We are the highest ranked course between Adelaide and Melbourne, except for the beautiful Horsham Golf Course, which is ranked 30th.

Millicent is ranked 5th in South Australia, behind Royal Adelaide, Kooyonga, Grange West and Grange East. Quite an achievement for a small country course with a small but dedicated staff. The course was also one of only 60 featured in the publication "Australia’s Premiere Golf Courses (1994)"

Played this course in November. What a dead set hidden gem. Miles from anywhere, but the layout and condition is awesome. Carved out of nautural bushland with a sandy base, the course is fully watered and is a credit to their club and local community. At $25.00 for 18 it is also great value.

Drive 13 kilometres into the back hills of Millicent following the signs along lonely pine-forested roads and you think you’re going to some hacker’s lament. The last thing you expect is a course of Millicent’s quality, even when you arrive at the nondescript concrete block clubhouse.

This is an outstanding course. Quite amazing in fact. How Lance Beale just carved it out of the forest with such a degree of good golf design is almost beyond comprehension. In a way Millicent is South Australia’s version of Horsham, a little hillier, perhaps flowing even better around the nicely undulating topography.

Probably the only thing that doesn’t quite match a course like Horsham or the Melbourne sand-belt is the aesthetic quality of the bunkering. Some greens are small, a couple of short par-3s reminded me of Woodlands … small raised greens with penal bunkering. The par-5s are an interesting and varied collection. The better par-4s would be worthy of any course in Australia. Overall, the course was in good condition.

I just wondered how on earth they keep Millicent going. About 160 members listed in the annual program and about 20 green fee players every Sunday. A shoestring budget for a very good course … a few hard-working people must really love it.

The green fees are now $25 weekends and $20 mid-week. Still excellent value for a course of this quality.

The best course I've played at in a long time was down here a couple of years ago and it wasnt so good but with the new greenskeeper the course looks the best it has ever looked and its in top shape and with only the greenkeeper and a few volounteers his doin a good job considering having no staff and its still got into the top 5 in South Australia and 76 in Australia this course will be the best course you will ever play on.
