Mirage Country Club Port Douglas is a golfer’s paradise. Rated as one of the world’s best resort courses, the 18 hole international standard championship golf course was designed by renowned golf architect Peter Thomson, and contains the usual combination of 6 par 3, 6 par 4 and 6 par 5 holes all within two quite different 9’s with the bordering Coral Sea and the panoramic mountain backdrop providing the only distractions to a memorable round.

The course also has practice putting green and bunkers, and professional golf instructors, and any equipment that you need is available for sale or hire from the Pro Shop. The Pro Shop are happy to arrange mail orders and deliveries for you.

While visiting the Mirage Country Club in Port Douglas for a round of golf, we were extremely disappointed with the conditions of this golf course.

It seems as though there is no greenskeeper the tee boxes and greens are extremely dry and damaged, with weeds growing…Not even sure the watering system works, or is on.

Seriously, this is unacceptable for something that is advertising itself as a ’Championship" course.

I understand that the property is currently for sale, which would probably explain the lack of care and money spent on the course, but if this is the case, then the Sheraton cannot be charging it’s full price, when a beautifully kept course like Sea Temple Country Club is charging it’s off-season rates of $55-$75.

I expect and hope that once there are new owners of the property, they will spend money and rebuild this course to an actual, ’playable’ course, but for now, unless they seriously reduce the price to at least half, don’t both playing it…The driving range and putting green at Sea Temple is better than all of the Mirage course.

Don’t waste your money…

This place is in need of a serious makeover. Fairways are so-so and there’s only a couple of greens which aren’t marred by bare patches and non_bermuda grass. The staff were really helpful and I felt a bit sorry for them that their course doesn’t stack up. Improve the maintenance and it would be a really enjoyable place to play.

Played front 9 yesterday only ($65)as was pressed for time and was very disappointed. Greens were slow and bumpy, fairways sandy and poorly maintained an the general presentation on the course was poor. I won’t go back.

Mirage, good but not great. Greens a bit patchy when I played there in early Dec 08. If it wasn’t for the greens being under par, then I would call it excellent. I played all other courses close by, (except for Sea Temple, which was having quite a bit of work done to it at the time, with only 10 holes in play). A bit pricie I thought but diffinately in the top 3 up that way.(not including Sea Temple). I will be back in early Dec 09.

Thoroughly enjoyed playing the course this week, it was in great nick, although the greens are the slowest I have played in a while. Perfect round for golfers of all abilities and it is not busy so play two balls on each hole for extra practice!

Very disappointed in this course. Greens on front nine were terrible, lots of kill and very slow. Back 9 was much more scenic, but very wet due to rain. Comparable courses around SE Qld are about $40-50, not the $95 they charged here. Will not play again.

Great course, really enjoyed it. Back 9 is considerably better. Front 9 needs great accuracy, very tight fairways. Green fees were a bit steep ($90 for resort guests) but I thought it was well worth it.

This is a good resort course. Very good condition and is challenging without being too tough. Well worth playing.

Although I enjoyed the length of this course and the surroundings, I have to say I can't see how the resort can expect people to pay this amout, this course has nothing on alot of the public courses of Brisbane and the Gold Coast, you would be better of playing the palms or the links, or Royal Mossman.

Enough said did not enjoy my experience at all.

I forked out the requisite $140 to play the course. Glad I did it, but I wouldn't again. It's a nice course but the premium you pay over others is not proportional to the course's quality.

The front nine winds it's way around the Mirage resort on the beach side of the main Port Road. A mix of challenging and easier holes, and of course the tees are set at lengths to suit varying standards of golfer.

The back nine is probably the better nine from a purist's perspective, with a greater links feel to the layout and you feel the course designer had more say in where the holes went - on the front nine you felt they fitted in around the resort.

There can be crocs on the back nine sometimes but the pro shop will warn you of that.

If you ignore the price of the round, you have to say it's an enjoyable course, in good condition and enough variation to challenge your golfing ability.

Alas it caters to those from countries with stronger currencies than ours, and there are courses around as good (and better than the front nine here) that charge considerably less.
