Mt Barker is a pretty flat tree lined course with immaculate greens which demand respect.
It’s an easy 20 minute drive from Adelaide with cheap green fees ($26)!
I’ve been playing here off and on for a number of years and the course is undergoing a couch upgrade of their fairways. Looks like they’ll be in superb nic in the coming months.
There’s nothing easy about the opening stretch of holes .
Hole 1 must be the toughest opening hole in South Australia.
420m Index 1! Long drive through 2 large gums to elevated green.
Hole 3 406m Index 3. Dogleg right to slightly elevated green.(Index 3).
There are back to back par 5’s in Holes 5 and 6 with a genuine par 4 9th (especially from the tips) with large water hazard right and small winding hazard left. Back nine is shorter with a couple of quirky holes but by no means take them for granted. I like the Hole 13 and 16 (strong par 4’s) and the par 3 12th and 15. Infact all of the par 3’s are strong around here. Nice clubhouse with lovely verandah especially in Summer. I like Victor Harbour and Links Lady Bay but for those looking for a quick hike up the freeway from Adelaide this is a must play for those coming to visit.

A great little hills course than i play throughout the year. This review is from the comp tees. Year round it is green & lush- ( a Sherwood forest type of lush) & this can be a nice change in summer. Its fair to say a couple of degrees cooler in summer too. Some of the bird life ( not the skirt type) can border on fluro in colour they are so vibrant & healthy.A very good thing. The front 9 is a little more roomy & accomodating although trees line both sides of the fairway front 9 & back. The wind can be killer & is usually a SE or gully breeze. The front 9 is for setting up your score. Back to back Par 5’s are nice. Greens are quick & have subtleness that should be respected, perhaps not as true as Glenelg or Gawler but probably the best of public courses near Adelaide. The back 9 is often a hybrid or iron off the tee. Without position you won’t have ANY line to the green. Too long an iron in & you’ll never stop the ball on the green. 14th is my most loathed hole as the trees preclude a fade or draw onto a thin green that slopes left to right & back to front. Most of the greens are somewhat elevated which grates me personally. Just one of those things. A fun course. Players off singles here travel very nicely at ANY course in the state.
