Another beautiful day in paradise at Mt Broughton. What a magnificent course it is. Living on the coast, I am a member at Kiama and also play at Wollongong and (Royal) Gerringong. So it is a bit novel to play an inland course where the wind isn’t such a factor. Mt Broughton was in magnificent shape – wonderful fairways and true greens. My son (a nine-marker) parred 12 holes, so it can be tamed (but not by me). I lost my regulation half a dozen golf balls in that unforgiving long grass off the fairways, but I’ll be back. Love the place.

Measures 6619m Par 72 (off the black tees where I played off) with five par 3s ranging from 151-227m, eight par 4s ranging from 342-422m and five par 5s ranging from 443-575m. Other tees are BLUES-6299m, WHITES-5860m, RED LADIES-5399m.

I know the rankings of Australia’s courses are an imperfect way of measuring architectural merit, as Australian Golf Digest (March 2010) does NOT rate Mount Broughton in the top 100, but they are a reasonable guide to use. Sure, the course offers accommodation so there is a way into the “top golf resorts” list, because as a golf course it probably needs to toughen up the green-bunker complex to enter the into the top 100 again.

The course has a mix of wide winter ryegrass and kentucky bluegrass fairways with thick rough off the fairways. Further afield of the ryegrass rough is the tall natural farmland grass up to 2 metres high which is almost impossible to find a golf ball in! The medium-to-large sized bent grass greens have subtle breaks which play a little slow with ryegrass surrounding the greens. There are 53 bunkers on the course with the number of bunkers changes as some are replaced with grass mounds whilst others newly appear over time.

The FRONT NINE currently has 23 bunkers with 2 natural creeks coming into play on 5 holes and the railway line on the right side of the 538m straight 7th (index 6) with 3 fairway bunkers and another 2 bunkers short of the front-sloping 2-tier green. Other highlights include the signature 227m 2nd (index 4) from its elevated tee you must carry over a natural creek which is up to 20m short of the green and runs along the leftside bunker to a green guarded by 3 bunkers; the 410m straight 8th (index 1) with 2 fairway bunkers off the tee to a green with 2 bunkers and the natural creek along its right edge; and the 506m slight double dogleg 9th (index 10) with a fairway bunker right off the tee with a natural creek along the entire leftside rough, with another yellow-staked creek across the fairway about 100m short of the green with 2 GUR bunkers – at the moment.

The 342m 1st (index 18) and 18th (index 15) holes are the shortest par 4s and amongst the easiest holes on the course to score well on.

The course’s best attributes are its par 3s which are long, well-bunkered and a variety of elevation changes to challenge any golfer. The par 5s get progressively longer, but not necessarily more challenging, as you ease into your round.

The BACK NINE currently has 30 bunkers with 9 ponds and the railway line on the far right side of the most bunkered hole on the course: the 550m straight 11th (index 5), 382m slight bend left 12th (index 7) & the longest par 4 which is also the only unbunkered hole on the course: the 422m straight 13th (index 9) with grassy hollows left and right of the green.

Besides these railway line holes other highlights include: the 388m slight bend right 14th (index 3) with OOB on the right, sand strip bunkers on the right off the tee to a green with 2 bunkers and a small pond 10m short right; the signature 575m straight 15th (index 2) with 3 ponds far left rough off the tee with 2 fairway bunkers 300m off the black tees with 2 greenside bunkers; and the 205m slightly uphill 16th (index 11) with 3 greenside bunkers short.

I agree with others that the ever since the course opened in November 1994 the course challenge and conditioning are the best out of the five 18-hole golf courses in the Southern Highlands.

Played here 5th December 2011 with $50 weekday fees and $70 weekend fees. Course access is 1km along Kater Road off the Illawarra Highway and 4km in total south-west from Moss Vale. Remember that the course is approximately 680m above sea level, so it can get very chilly from May-September.

There are lots of reviewers on this course most of which probably do not appreciate the layout due a lack of ability or even a trivial incident on the course. I recommend this course to the more frequent golfers, but if you must, beginners and less frequent golfers should play off the white markers.

Played in Ladies Pro-am so course was in peak condition, particularly despite the recent saturating rains.

Most holes offer daunting visual and shot making challenges, laying up from bunkers and correct lines pay dividends here. The strong winds make decision making complicated, however most holes offer a line to run the ball in if needed, however most greens will take a high ball in within reason. Greens need a lot of respect but were very fair.

I am looking forward to the next opportunity to play there.

Had been looking forward to playing Mt Broughton, we had two games courtesy of cudo. $45 with a cart, which was good value.

Course is a narrow tract between farmland and a rail line. The first nine was disappointing with an internal out of bounds and a confused layout that requires signage. Given the amount of land that would have been available, this seems strange. First is a gentle dog leg opener, 2nd was tough, 3rd is a very simple 5 (I hit driver 6 iron from the blacks). The rest is kinda forgettable.

Back nine was much better apart from 10 and 18. Some really good holes running down the rail line.

Greens were very slow, seemed like they had been over watered and then not cut.

Whilst the fairways are generous you often have knee high rough on either side. Have a bad day with the driver and its pretty penal.

General consensus from 8 was that nobody would be rushing back.

great course and for me quite challenging from the blue tees. It is worth playing again and again especially with the green fees and cart offered by Iseekgolf!

Beautiful Course. Great weather. Shame that we could not hit straight enough. Rough was unforgiving. All four of us really enjoyed the challenge. It is a course for long hitters. greens were in good condition but I was unable to read them all day. All staff were very friendly especially Issy, who stayed back to ply us with drinks to comfort our broken egos.
We will be back soon.

This is a fantastic course. Amazing location and overall layout. The fairways have been widened but for hackers like me it’s still easy to hit it in the long grass – from there you have no hope of finding your ball. The greens were impeccable. Took advantage of winter special and we were extremely lucky with the weather. It was sunny but cold – we came prepared. Overall had a brilliant day and look forward to playing it again.

Played Mt Broughton today 7 Jul 11. The course was in great knick considering the weather over the last few weeks. The greens were a little slower than when I last played the course but I couldn’t fault them. Only down side to the day was the cold wind. I will be playing this course again and again and again. It’s a real test of your golf game. The par 5 15th played Driver, 3 wd, 3 wd into the wind, and that was by one of the better golfers in our group!

Played here before and loved it so I took advantage of the great winter offer of $35. Had a near perfect day and love the course even more now that they seem to have cut back some of the treacherous rough. It would have been perfect if all the bunkers had been renovated because the unfinished ones were unplayable. If you want to enjoy real golf go play this course – it is a delight.

played on Saturday in the Monthly Medal, this course is very very tough, lost three balls in first three holes and was promptly no chance in the comp. The Par 3s are too long, 180m++ which is just plain silly, however the course is in magnificent condition and has great greens. Winter weather makes the length tough as it is difficult to swing in 14 layers of clothing. Overall, a great course, but be prepared to battle the elements and pack extra balls.

PROS

  • Conditioning is 1st class, good design, price OK and good staff

Cons

  • Par 3s are too long

Played here three times now, but yesterday was the pick. Started out cold and foggy (@8.45am), but cleared to a beautiful calm sunny day.

Overall, course is in very good condition although there is some ongoing maintenance on a couple of holes. Bunkers seemed better than last time I was here, so not sure if there’s been some work done in that respect. Rough is extremely punishing – anything in the long grass is dead, so you might want to take a few extra balls – but most fairways are not that narrow.

I’ve always played mid week and the course has been practically deserted. Greens in very good condition. An absolute bargain for $30 (walking 18).

Played here for the first time on 3/4/11, the greens had recently been cored so was only charged half green fees which was nice so I can’t really comment of the greens but playing off the blue markers adds length to the course. Although I enjoyed the first nine it was a bit up and down and also found that some of the bunkers could do with more sand, interesting you can see all 9 holes from the green on eth 1st hole. Thoroughly enjoyed the back nine which I think carries the more challenging and variety of holes.

The course provides generous and well covered fairways but as with previous reviews of you end up in the rough the chances are you won’t find your ball so take the penalty and move on, you should also be careful as I came across 2 snakes during my round.

A mild, blue sky day with little wind and only about 30 people on the course so I really enjoyed the day and will definitely go back again.

Thoroughly enjoyed game – generous fairways, horrendous rough though.
Great greens, some poor bunkers apparently being worked on. Only about
10 other people on entire course & we paid $ 35 including cart. Who
pays for this ? Great setting, wonderful 19th. Highly recommend.

Probably my most favoured course to play on. Fantastic layout, perfect fairways and greens, and some beautiful surrounds. Great value open days once a month. Great day out, from Sydney. Bunkers are the only let down, but work is being done as far as am aware. New bunkers being built or renovated are perfect.

PROS

  • Course Condition.
  • Minimal Traffic

Cons

  • Bunkers have not been great when i have played.

One of the best courses in Sydney, if not in all of NSW. Beautiful fairways, exemplary greens and picturesque views on practically every hole. It’s a tough course but I’ve played here a few times and the climate has always been about 5 degrees cooler than Sydney. Never crowded, friendly staff and ideal conditions – what more could you want? If I could afford it, I would join the club, despite it being about an hour from where I live.

Just as tough to play as I remember it. Glad I had a bag of spare balls. I was dissapointed that the iSeek price for a round including buggy was actually more expensive that the price on the Mt Broughton website. I’ll have to have a word to them about that. Goes against the principle of being an aggregator & adding value! They didn’t add any!! That aside, a fun round of golf was had by all.

Played pretty well here. Course is in good condition, although greens were slow due to recent rain and some bunkers are not that great (hard pan dirt). Rough is punishing so don’t hit into it. Overall a good course and easy to get on.

  • Well maintained
  • Challenging without being impossible

Mt Broughton is one of those courses that stays in your mind long after you’ve finished playing it. From the picture postcard perfect setting; through the wonderfully unusual (by Sydney standards) and enjoyable course layout and condition; to the friendly and accommodating staff, Mt Broughton has it all.

Without doubt, it’s a course I wish I could play more often.

PROS

  • Location
  • Condition of the greens, fairways and tees
  • Excellent staff
  • Course layout

Cons

  • Some bunkers GUR
  • Should be prepared to loose a few balls

Absolutely a pleasure to play even for a hacker (handicap – 20). Lost quite a few balls and played about 10 shots above where I wanted to but thoroughly enjoyed the challenge. The greens had been cored about a week ago but overall the greens still ran fairly true and the ball rolled nicely (highly impressed with the coring as I have seen some nightmare cored greens). The front nine was a solid warm up. Whilst shorter than the back nine, still challenging once we hit about the fifth hole and the wind came up. The back nine had many long holes compared to what we normally play, no forgiveness for duffed or stray tee shots. Many required a long iron into the green after a solid drive and with some large greens a long putt. Even for the casual golfer or mid-high handicapped golfer, it is well worth the trip – especially for those on the south side of Sydney.

Mt Broughton is great course a bit over an hour down the M5 from Sydney. It is well worth the trip and much closer for folks living on the southern side of sydney to travel to the southern highlands rather than to the Hunter Valley, and now that I’ve discovered this jewel I will be heading down more often. The challenging openning hole is a dogleg right to an uphill elevated green followed by a stunning downhill par 3 second. The views from the second tee were breathtaking with views over the whole front nine and nearby farmland.
Make no mistake, this is a first class course with greens designed to test and bunkers stategically placed to catch you off the tees. Each hole presents an examination of your game and the the course is very long from the blue or black markers especially the back nine. Only critisism was that some bunkers were very dry with not much sand, but that may have been due to the recent weather.

This was my second outing on a course that I believe ought to be rated higher. We played off the black markers and with the conditions (wind gusts I don’t dare speculate the speed) being very trying, together with the unforgiving roughs made it that much more difficult. A great course that needs the highest respect. The pro-shop and staff very friendly. Would recommend to all and sundry.

Despite the windy cold weather (I suppose you have to expect that in the height of winter on the Southern Highlands), Mt Broughton is a great course. The course had seen a lot of wet weather over the past few days however it held up real well. the rough is very frustrating as it is deep grass and very easy to loose balls and your temper. A real joy to play and definetly going back there especially at the cheap price through iseekgolf.

played 18 holes on thurs & Fri with the $20 special from Iseekgolf. absolute bargain even with the renovations to the bunkering around the course. The Tees, fairways and greens all in good condition. The new bunkers are well designed and grass bunkers a nice touch as well. When the upgrades are finished it will improve on an already good course.
very easy to lose lots of golf balls here unless u are a straight hitter. The long grass just off the first cut of rough is knee deep and virtually impossible to find your ball. Course has good character

PROS

  • greens, fairways and tees
  • championship golf course well designed and very challenging
  • friendly pro shop staff and on course workers

Cons

  • renovations to some bunkers and around some greens.

About 26 of us from Nowra played Mt. Broughton yesterday at the cost of only $20 each (including cart). Everyone was very impressed with the course except for the bunkers which are obviously being filled with new sand. We all felt a bit guilty playing on such a wonderful course for only $20.

Mt Broughton is a magnificient course , and a very testing one . It has wide fairways and strategic bunkering , not a course to try and blast your’e way around .
The greens are large , and if your’e short game isn’t up to scratch , you will find yourself with some testing 25m putts , there isn’t a great deal of undulations on the greens , just subtle angle changes which will catch you out , they run true and at good speed .
They are doing a lot of work at the moment , clearing out the creek and surrounds .
Much to everyone’s delight , the once horrible bunkers are gradually being covered in with grass , and some others being revamped with turfed edges and nice fluffy sand – YES , Fluffy sand .
As previously stated in other reviews , you don’t want to be spraying your drives , otherwise you will lose a few balls . However it is par 72 off the blue plates , and a good test of golf , if you are hitting it straight , you will enjoy this course . There are a lot of wide fairways to hit and the lies are excellent .
We played Wednesday, lost 2 balls & found 2 , and will back again today , the Iseek golf tee time booking service is great – how they can do this one for $20 with a cart is amazing – what a bargain to play such a good course at this price.
I have played this course 6 times now and it is always a nice challenge , and getting better all the time . I would recommend you play this course at least 2 times as it can be intimidating the 1st time – it looks very long and wide , not a lot of trees and we all know about the long grass – very long and easier to take a drop with another ball than to try and search endlessly for a lost one , although you are bound to find a few also .
The course is links style and very scenic , set in open fields . The wind can make the course even tougher – all part of the challenge .

I played Mount Broughton yesterday 30th May. The course was a little wet from recent rain but still in good nick. The greens were slightly soft but still fast and very true. In Summer the greens would be lightening.

It is a links style course with some great bunkering reminscent of British Open courses. With the old style manor house for the club house/ pro shop and the beautiful country side surrounds (and the cold winds), you could be forgiven for thinking you were playing golf in England or Scotland, which gives the course a brilliant charm.

The course is long and challenging. We played off the blue plates and it’s an excellent but not unfair test of golf by any stretch. As a 12 marker I had no issues with the length of the course. The wind was up which made some holes long and tough but on the other side of the coin, you get to hit down wind and launch big drives.

Most driving holes have well placed bunkers around 200-230 off the tee either side of the fairway, so unless you can bomb it over them, you need to drive straight.

The rough is long if you spray it around off the tee; I believe it used to be worse, but may be a little more forgiving these days to make it more playable for the average golfer. If you can’t hit relatively straight off the tee consistently then this is probably not the course for. You you’ll spend a lot of time and money looking for and losing balls and won’t enjoy yourself.

The tees, fairways and greens are excellent in quality; there are no bad lies off the fairway and all greens are beautifully covered and run perfectly true. Once on the greens they are not overly difficult, meaning they are relatively flat with no outrageous ridges or undulations to negotiate.

There is some water on the course, with small creeks/water hazards running along and across some holes and a dam on the back 9; but if you are a decent ball striker water should not come into play.

This course is great and makes the game so much fun because it’s a real strategic test of golf. With bunkers well placed in landing areas off the tees, in fairways and around greens, you really need to use smart course management to get around. You need to understand how you want to shape your shot, have the right distance/yardage and play smart; particulalry if the wind is up like it was yesterday.

My favourite holes were the 4th (hit it stiff for birdie) 7th, 8th and 9th which are long testing holes, the 11th (chipped in for birdie) and the 14th and 15th.

The 14th is a great hole; a 381 meter par 4, playing a lot longer into the wind, although down hill which helps. The 2nd shot requires a mid to long iron into the wind with bunkers guarding the green either side and a water hazard on the right of the green waiting to swallow anything that comes up short and right ie; those who slice the ball.

The 15th at 534m meters was a brute of a par 5 into the wind requiring some very solid shots to get to the green in regulation with driver and long irons to keep it under the wind.

I would recommend buying a course guide at the pro shop before teeing off. It gives you all the distances you’ll need for hazards off the tees, to the green etc.. and for $8 is well worth while.

The only negative were the bunkers, as a few others have mentioned in reviews, which were full of water and if not were packed with hard sand. The plus is that on a few holes there were renovations and drainage being placed in bunkers so it seems as if the issue is being addressed which in time will make the course even better.

In all this is a great golf course. We teed off at 8am on a Sunday morning with hardly anyone on the course which was great. I wouldn’t recommend the course to anyone who slices or hooks the ball a lot or are learning the game. It’s more suited to those who can get around at about an 18 handicap or less regularly. It’s only 90 mins from Sydney so not too far to get away from crowded Sydney courses on the weekend and play an excellent quality course.

I’m happy to say I shot my handicap around here yesterday and still felt I left half a dozen shots out on the course with a couple of poor chips and 3 putts, so I had a good day in all.

I’ll be back soon.

Played 27 May with drizzle on some holes. Due to rain in previous few days, greens had not been cut and were quite slow but fairly true. Played off blue markers and the course was long. Some very good holes, particularly some of the par 3s and the 14 and 15th. Rough was punishing; in the rough was basically a lost ball. Fairways are fairly generous and it was my wayward driver in particular that landed me in the rough far too often to have a good score. Would like to play again when drier and my driving improves. Most bukers were nearly full of water and the sand was hardpacked. only in a couple but were OK to play. Under 4 hours with 4 in carts.

Played Mt Broughton in the Golflink open day May 2010.

I was really taken with the course, some excellent holes, pleasant surrounds and thought required on the tee. If you miss the fairways enough to get in the long grass then forget about it, its gone.

Well worth a game and i’ll be back.

Please though, fix the bunkers….

I really liked this course. I was down at Peppers for a wedding and brought the sticks along for a hit. What a treat – the amazing thing about it is that is was so quiet, hardly anyone on it. I had actually booked in to play in the comp (the Saturday comp is open after 10.30am) but there wasn’t anyone else around (and the other person booked in at noon didn’t show) so played it socially. Saw only 1 person on the back 9 a few holes in front so was able to take my time and be leisurely but still found I had raced through in quick time (just over 3hrs) – try doing that on a public access Sydney course on a Saturday.

The layout is quite unique, like they have dropped an 18 hole course in the middle of some cow paddocks, which is exactly what they have done. There aren’t many trees but the long grass is very long and you can lose quite a few balls in there (some friends had played the day before and seen quite a few brown snakes so when I heard that anything in the long grass was left there). If you are hitting straight you can pull out your driver a lot, this is a long course and if you are crazy enough to play from the blacks then it is even longer.

As previous posters have mentioned the bunkers are very bad, full of dirt and stone and most were GUR but thankfully I was only in one all day. And the tee box for the 10th is covered in duck shit. Fix those 2 things and let some mongooses run loose to keep the snakes in check and this place would be awesome.

Overall I really enjoyed my round and would play again. They have a good deal for a Sydney based golfer to get an associate membership. I am not sure I would get down the half dozen times I would need to make it worthwhile but am definitely thinking about it.

PROS

  • Fantastic pastoral setting, very relaxing - you can't see any houses or cars just birds and cows.
  • Not many golfers on here so no waiting and a quick round in a cart

Cons

  • Long grass full of brown snakes!
  • Bunkers need fixing

Great layout, a real links style that’s not too difficult.
As per many past reviews the bunkers are a discrace, nothing resembling sand in them.
Also no marshals and the course management sucks. They pushed a 2 ball of beginners in front of us at #10. they refused to let us past so after 3 holes were forced to skip a hole to get moving again.
Nice course but not worth the $75.
Moss Vale, Bowral and Mittagong are all much better value.

Played the course the day before a major event (Jack Newton Junior), so the course was in fabulous shape!!! I think one really needs to play this course to experience it!!!

Like others have said, play smart and you’ll be rewarded!!!

Only downer were the bunkers, set up was good, but were just hard dirt.

Really enjoyed the course, it is a great deal. Lush fairway, beautiful greens and the layout is very interesting. It is hard but fair.

Even my wife who is a beginner and plays off 35 enjoyed it.

Do take plenty of balls, I am a 10 handicapper and i lost 8 balls. But I wasn’t driving the ball particularly straight that day. The rough is as they say rough and you really need to pay attention to where you balls stops, as a ball can run off the fairway and just disappear.

Also, do have a drink at the club house after the round. It reminds me of those clubhouses in Scotland, very cosy and the pie is pretty good.

Would definitely play there again.

Played at Mt Broughton several weekends ago on a picture perfect day. My first impressions were that this was very good attempt at a "links" type course.
As others have said, take plenty of balls with you because if you miss the fairway it’s re-load time. I lost 6 balls, but found almost as many. If you’re playing Mt Broughton for the first time, buy a course guide; you won’t regret it.
Overall I’d give this course 6/10. It certainly wouldn’t make my top 100.

Delightful "links" style course with a good selection of shorter par 4’s requiring accurate placement rather than just bombing away off the tee. Greens were a little slow for a Victorian but, once you found the pace they played pretty true.

I can understand previous posts re the rough and bunkers but there is plenty of width to the landing areas so if you’re in the rough you probably deserve it.

Great links style course, feels like you are in Scotland with the train line on the edge of the course. Very long and lots of different tee options. Fairways and greens were great. Lots of rough and lost many a ball but the amount of balls I found made up for it. The only problem was the bunkers. Half of them were GUR and most of the others were just dirt. When I played I only saw a few other people on the course. Great course with the only problem being the bunkers.

Really enjoyed Mt Broughton. Green fees of $75 inc cart was a reasonable deal – you’d pay nearly double for a course like this on the Golf Coast.

Many tee options – not slight differences in yardage but sometimes up to 80m just for the mens alone. We played the longest tees but it wasn’t outrageous, just fair.

Bunkers were as others have said – they were more like soil than sand. But who cares – they’re a hazard and I found them quite playable.

Take plenty of balls! The main problem was balls just running off the fairway just disappear. A 13 handicapper mate who wasn’t driving straight lost 15. Shorter hitters probably will fare better, although some tees required a 150m carry from the back tees just to reach the fairway.

Greens were generous and true. Undulations made distance judgement tricky, but spinklers were well marked.

Great country charm about the course. No such things as adjacent fairways here – each hole is secluded. It was even a bit tricky navigating the course.

Lush green fairways, mountainous backdrop, cows mooing, pretty clubhouse, what more could you want?

Excellent golf course…

Fairways wide enough to take a good shot, greens receptive enough to hold a ball, only downside was the bunkers, they were disgracefull and should have ALL been GUR…spend some money guys and fix em up.

A ball hit off the fairway can be heavily penilised as the rough is deep and the rubbish past the rough is lost ball time.

Have a game there, you will enjoy it, if you are a chopper, take a supply of balls with you…

Quality course! Played there on a friday morning and while maybe the freezing cold weather and drizzle turned people away I was the only person on the course!! Chatting to a green keeper and he said only about 50 ppl per week play it, such a waste for a such an awesome track, if you want a game where you can take your time and not worry about other golfers then this is the place!!

Played from the very back tees, 6600m, its f-ing long!! Pretty much expect to hit driver 3 iron all day from back there!! 2nd hole is a 235m par 3, monster!!

Didn’t get a bad lie in the fairway or rough all day, grass is lush, expect to lose a couple of balls if you spray it into the gnarly long stuff but you have plenty of room to work with.

Greens were pretty nice, lumpy and bumpy at the start but during the day the greenies were cutting and rolling them and by the last few holes they were much better, play in the arvo if that bothers you!

Bunkers as people have said are pretty crap, no sand just muddy stuff but who really cares, when you have a golf course as spectacular as this it doesnt really matter, dont go in the bunkers!

Will definately go back again and reccommend to anyone, it is pretty open and wide fairways but this challenge is about playing from the long tees and staying out of trouble, good luck!

Membership is only $750 for Sydney players who are members of another club, good deal!

Conceptually, I suppose it’s not a bad layout. In reality however, it’s a complete bog.

I have played twice now, and on both occasions 80% of the bunkers on the course have been marked GUR. On top of this, the squelching underfoot becomes intolerable after a while, and every other lie is swampy. When I remarked on this to the confident young lad tending the clubhouse, he told me that it was because of ‘all of the rain that they’d had’.......God forbid the drought ever breaks in the Highlands.

Let me start by saying that this course is unique. It is unlike any other course I have played.

Green fees can be a little high for a course in the middle of nowhere, but I would definitely pay the $80 odd dollars again to play.

Tee Boxes: 4/5

Fairways: 4/5

Greens: 4/5

Bunkers: 2/5

played on easter monday with my wife, had a fabulous time.

the course is a very good test of golf, for both the experienced and beginner golfer.

i play off 10 the wife about 34 but both thouroghly enjoyed the beautiful landscape and the lush fairways.

the only down side is the bunkers, they are appauling for such a good course, every bunker was just mud and rock. very dissapointing for such a nice course.

highlights, just the tranquil setting, lush fairways, unforgiving rough and beautiful greens...

highly recommend this course to anyone who wants a challenge or just an enjoyable day on the course

Playing in a Group of 4 averaging 18 Handicapers and off the Blue Markers.

We all found the rough to be of a unforgivable hieght, any ball which found its way even if only centimeters was lost.

For such a long course you would expect that there would be more carts available.

The Bunkers were of an unacceptable standard, the only bunker which had sand was the 18th, most other bunkers consisted of hard dirt & rocks only.

We found the Greens & Fairways to be in good condition.

The Staff were obliging & helpfull.

In summary:- Lack of Carts, On course facilities ie: Food, Drinks etc.

On reflection we were disappointed and would not be in any hurry for a return visit.

I have played at Bonville, Camden Lakeside, Cypress Lakes, Riverside Oaks and many more "top 100" golf courses but none of them were as enjoyable as this course.

It is long and tough with nicely paced greens yet not an overwhelming challenge for the capable player. Don't waste your time though if you struggle to break 100 at a normal course because this beast will not be much fun.

May I start off by saying it is a shame that I found this course so close to me leaving Sydney. An absolute pleasure to play Mt Broughton because it makes you feel like you are actually playing the British Open. I totally agree with one of the earlier reviews that it is well worth the travel down from Sydney...close your eyes and amagine golf on a Sunday playing at a first class Course in complete Tranquility with no groups behind you...being able to take your time to actually read the line for your putts...does this sound like Fantasyland????? Well take the trip to Mossvale and see the Friendly Proshop Staff and im sure after you lose a few Balls you will be driving home very happy you have enjoyed a day of Golf you may never forget.

Many people seem either blissfully unaware of this golfing paradise, or put off by warnings of the course's difficulty.

I have mixed feelings about it. On one hand it's hard for me to convince partners to take the trip down (just 90 mins from central Sydney - considerably closer than the Hunter Valley courses), but on the other it ensures you rarely have to book a tee time - just show up and you've almost got the course to yourself - in immaculate condition too because hackers just don't want to play here!

The layout is tremendous - links golf in mountain country is novel but it works. The long grass and the course's length is often spoken about as the sources of difficulty, but there've been few times I've played where the wind has not been a factor.

There are major distance variations between tees, so you choose how much challenge you want before you tee off - for low(ish) markers the pro will normally allow you to take your pick. I would advise that for handicappers over 18 you don't be a hero - play off the front or second tee grounds and you will honestly enjoy your round much more. It's still no mickey mouse course from those tees.

I like virtually all the holes. The index one hole, the long par 4 eighth, is often into the prevailing southerly (which can be bitingly cold in winter). The fairway is reasonably wide, and the long grass on the right is not in play until about 230m off the back tees. That said, a bunker sits astride the fairway taking important metreage from your drive, and from the front of the bunker you still have 180m to a narrow green protected by a bunker left and a water hazard right.

The par 4 fourteenth is another hole affected by wind direction. A 380m dogleg right which basically heads south, the shortcut involves risking bunkers and short rough, and leaves a tantalising approach over a pond just short of the green. With a southerly that spells real dificulty.

The greens and fairways are always in good condition, and the beautiful little clubhouse is a welcome respite from a tough day on the course.

For keen golfers and those who yearn for the Scottish Links experience...

A very long, tough layout, south of Sydney in the Southern Highlands.

From the back markers the course is very long with one of the longest par 3's I have ever played. The course is also well bunkered.

I've played it in both winter & summer & would recommend the later over the former. In winter the grass coverage can be a little tight, especially in high traffic areas.

The outer rough often get over grown to ridiculous height for a course that has golfers of all levels on it. This can cause some lost balls.

Mount Broughton is only a leisurely hours drive from Sydney it is a great escape for a day trip.

With good company great views and a demanding course what more could you ask for.

The course has a great mix of holes if you are game play off the back plates the first hole is a short par 4 dogleg right if you drive too far straight you will have your first taste of the deep grass which runs along the perimeters of the fairways, keep it straight or you will donate a lot of balls and in the warmer months the snakes will ensure you don't look too hard.

The course has a Scottish links feel about it with minimal trees and the long grasses.

The 2nd from the plate measures 227 metres from an elevated tee looking down to a protected green water short and well bunkered.

As the goods train hurtles past the par 5 7th is a solid hole with well placed fairway bunkers requiring an accurate drive to set up your second shot.

The back nine is my favorite particulary holes 13, 15 and 17 if your looking for a tough test of golf try the par 4 13th measuring 422 metres from the plate a good drive is essential to position yourself for a long iron second to a well designed green with out of bounds all the way along the right hand side courtesy of the train line.

The 15th measures 575 metres and on a windy day if you can reach the short grass with your drive your've done well it still requires a fairway wood and long iron third to reach the green.

The 17th which borders the dam on the left hand side and long grass on the right is a strong par 4 a wide fairway tightens to a well protected green hit well the second shot is very satisfying long to mid iron with a front bunker that can deceive your distance.

From an elevated position looking down the fairway to the Stately Clubhouse the par 4 18th is like the first a shorter hole but beware of the pond on the right which will catch a poor drive, 3 wood or long iron is a better option.

Make sure you sit down and enjoy a drink in the clubhouse upstairs after your game or at half way it reminds me of some of the clubhouses in Scotland with comfortable chairs open fireplace and cosy feel about it.

Downstairs is a well stocked Pro Shop run by the residend Director of Golf Michael Mosher.
