Mt Osmond, where Sir Don’s name is etched into club history, is a picturesque private course which overlooks the city of Adelaide and beyond. Being 15min from the city and on the fringe of the Adelaide Hills it oozes serenity and provides escape from city living. It consists of a range of challenging holes, suiting those golfers who can shape the ball in both directions and possess (at times) the imagination of a mountain goat. The course is moderately treed and bunkered, providing plenty of trouble if you got out on the wrong side of the bed. Personally, holes which stand out are the Par 4 7th, Par 4 8th, Par 3 16th and the Par 5 18th. My favourite, however, is the Par 4 7th: Playing from an elevated tee and a dog leg left you face two equally nerve-tingling decisions to cover the 260m required. Either play safe for the fairway with out-of-bounds left and water right or depending on your faith in the titanium big boy, have a go at the green without the risk of water. When you reach the green, hopefully with the same ball, some slick putts await. When you have putted out do take time to look down over Adelaide and its surrounds (as far as the Yorke Peninsula on a clear day- impressive). Mt Osmond is a pleasure to play… If it was good enough for Sir Don it’s certainly good enough for me.
