Muirfield Golf Club has a reputation for being a very good members’ course but at the same time a very difficult driving course – a challenge to golfers of all skills levels. With most of the holes carved through the bushland it has been said that groups of 4 had to walk “single file”, thus is the tightness of several tee shots down narrow tree lined fairways

Now after many years of constant change, Muirfield boasts some of the best greens in the metropolitan area and with the recent completion of 5 new holes and a complete irrigation system, the golfers of Muirfield and their guests will be happy for many years to come.

As a member I would highly recomend Muirfield for any golfer of any ability looking for a fun challenge. The greens are some of the best in Sydney, they are firm, fast, true yet very receptive to spin. The fairways and tees are all very lush, with good grass coverings, well maintained by the green staff. The standout of the 18 holes are the 12th, uphill par 4 at 410m, ’the laughing hole’ short par 4 14th where anything other worse than par is disappointing and the 9th, a par 3 from an elevated tee to a two tiered green which can be tough from the back tees as well as in the wind. You must hit the fairways as the course is quite narrow on the par 4’s, although longer hitters can take woods/hybrids or even long irons off the tee on most par 4’s as they aren’t very long.
The Pro Shop is stocked with Titleist, Cleveland and Srixon clubs and balls as well as an extensive clothing range and putters.
All in all well worth a round of golf here if your in the area, a friendly club with a good course that will test you.
P.S @ greatwhiterabbit, who goes to a pro shop and pays green fees with eftpos, 99% of golfers pay in cash, perhaps you are just poorly organised, the PRO doesn’t have to wait for you to get your $ and come back, letting a group go in front means they dont have to wait an eternity for you to get your organisation done!

PROS

  • Great greens, tees and fairways
  • well stocked Pro Shop
  • Challenging Course where no hole is the same

Cons

  • Small Chipping Green
  • Practice putting green on a massive slope
  • Hitting nets need new mats, they are very old and used

So we arrive in the pro shop to pay the green fees and the pro tells us they don’t have eftpos…WTF??? I mean seriously guys, it’s 2011, get your shit together! To make matters worse we went to the clubhouse to get cash from the ATM and when we returned the pro had let another group go in front of us? Thanks champ, way to make a social golfer feel welcome!

PROS

  • Interesting layout
  • Well maintained greens and fairways

Cons

  • It's 1982 in the pro shop
  • Stones in the bunkers
  • Crowded

Nice course well maintained. Heaps of trees, many holes are long and straight forward. The course lacks some variation, but there are a few holes that really are good. Greens are good, fairways neat and tidy. The proshop is pretty bad however, with few big name brands and is understoked. overall 6/10

I’ve never had a bad day at Muirfield GC. The course is very well maintained and has a good number of challenging holes (esp. the back nine). Course availability and green fees are very reasonable. Last time I played it was in very good nick.

I have found that it can get a bit congested with slow players on mondays and thursdays as there are usually a large number of foursomes plodding their way around but provided you’re not in a massive rush, this isn’t an issue.

Not a big fan of the Gloria Jeans advertisement in the middle of the lake as it clearly lowers the tone significantly. Here’s hoping Lowes doesn’t have designs on sponsoring the second pond.

Four of us played last Sunday and enjoyed it very much
Two of had played 15 years ago so in real terms we were all new to the course. Having read earlier posts regarding how dry the course was we were pleasantly surprised at the good condition we found through the green. The greens were quite quick and there are many testing holes (we are on handicaps 19, 25 & up) A pretty course with a clubhouse boasting great views across the course we all agreed we would like to come back and have another crack.
Quite a hilly course so we were glad we booked carts
Would recommend quite highly

Easygame must be playing Augusta every week to rate Muirfield 1 star. Must be a bit thick too because the cards are printed dynamically every time hence why preferred lies and other info are printed on the card.

Muirfield is one of the better member tracks around Sydney and in all but very dry conditions is one of the better maintained with very consistent green quality. Has a good variety of holes.

PROS

  • Well maintained
  • Good value
  • Friendly

Cons

  • Lacks good quality 3 shot holes

I have played at this course many times and i like the course. being a 23 handicapper i can face trouble on some holes like the difficult par 4 12th hole but still end up with a good score. but i understand as the price of maintaining a good quality golf course is high i respect that they are unable to fix some of the issues with the course due to low budgeting. if they had changed a few holes the could probably turn the 5th hole into a par 5. but overall it is a fine course to play and it is a good course to start as especially price wise for juniors

PROS

  • Good Variety of Holes
  • Good Staff
  • Good Membership
  • Well Maintained greens

Cons

  • Some Slow Players
  • Slighty dry by the end of summer
  • Some poorly Cut Cups

Played Muirfield a few weeks ago. Coming from a private members club I had high hopes set by the marketing spiel from Muirfield. I was dissappointed.

The staff were friendly and there was only a few minutes delay in teeing off.

However 5.5 hours for a round is appalling. The fairways were average, at best. There was almost no grass under the numerous trees and in some patches they were even trying to grow turf under the trees (good luck!!).

It appears as though they have shoe-horned 18 holes into space for 15. Too many really short parallel par 4s. Beware any players on the adjoining fairway. If you have a relatively minor slice or hook then your ball could end up two fairways across.

The scorecard has permanently printed on it – 30cm preferred lies through the green. Enough said.

I won’t be back any time soon.

Booked a 11am start after the comp on the Monday public holiday just passed. Was told the comps were running 15mins behind. At 11.50am we started. The unpoliced slow play was awful and we left after only getting through 13 holes in 4 hours.

Played here today. Will definately feel it in the legs. Signage needs to be upgraded pronto, very poor. Greens were in excellent shape. Worth the trip if the signage is improved.

Overall good course. Fairways were good with minimal bare batches. They will get better in coming months with much renovation happening at the club. Greens were mainly true and quite quick, but some were over run with many pitch marks. Highlights for me were the par 4 5th, great long, dogleg par 4, sure to challenge to any golfer, and par 3 9th, narrow tee shot over the carpark entrance to a small green surrounded by bunkers, with O.B to the right and left, with a dam at the front left of the green. Great clubhouse and pro shop with very helpful members and staff. A good golfing day out.

PROS

  • Good variety of holes to challenge all levels of golfers

Cons

  • Some greens were in average condition

I played in the open comp last Monday and I had a really great day out. I found the staff to be friendly and corteous. There are still a few bare patches but overall the course was in great condition – especially the greens! It is very tight and as with most golf holes being straight off the tee pays dividends. It is not overly long (which was a little disappointing) but a good variety of holes. I’d recommend heading out for a game if you are ever in the area.

played muirfield last week for the first time and enjoyed the course, agood variety of holes with immaculate greens, found the layout a bit confusing with no directions we had to look for the group in front when leaving the green, whilst not overly long you need to be straight as it is ouite tight, great clubhouse

Played course recently. Found it to be overall good condition. Kikuyu fairways were generally well grassed. Greens were true and in very good condition although a little slow and soft.

Course has a good variety of holes icluding a couple of long par 4's. A fair course with accurate shotmaking well rewarded. Lots of trees to catch the offlineshots. Nice setting and a modern and spacious clubhouse. Overall an enjoyable and interesting course to play for golfers of all standards.

This is the ideal course for members, public and new golfers. You should not lose to many balls around this tight track.

This course is a real challenge without involving big water carries. The greens are really top class and can be a little fast at times. Now that all the new construction work is completed it is a pleasure to play.

Overall, I would rate it 9/10, and recommend that a game there takes you away from the hectic life that surrounds us.

Have played here about 5 times and love it. A real get away from a hectic day at work. Found the greens and surrounds imaculate. Heaps of trees which add to the feeling of being away from the city, but can punish you when you mishit. Nice clubhouse overlooking the 18th which is floodlit at night.

I have seen a couple minor 'snobish' behaviour, but generally ok. Good membership deals as well.

I agree with the last bloke. The members have an air of superiority that is unfounded as well. They are working on the course, but there is still a long way to go.

This course, being in a great central location to me, was a great disappointment to play. The course has some great potential in terms of course layout and bunker placement etc, however the condition of the fairways, greens, EVERYWHERE, was WELL below standard, especially for the price.

The greens were the only green part of the course, and they were extremely soft, meaning massive amounts of pitchmarks, misleading green speeds, and frustrating play.

I went to school across the road from the course, and remember back in the good old days the course was beautifully green and looked pristine, however the drought has had a major effect on the maintenance of this course. I fear they have no permission to use sprinklers and water the course, and it is suffering badly.

To add insult to injury, the course is under repair in many places, and one instance I was walking down the fairway with a WALL of clay and soil about 1 storey high!

Muirfield Golf Club is nestled in what was once the greenbelt area of North Rocks. It has 18 very different holes and is always a challenge.

The course suffers from a lack of water storage and so can become a bit dry in the summer, but the greens and tees are always in the best condition possible.

Muirfield is not a course for the feint hearted. It's fairways are narrow and the penalty for missing them can be harsh. The course is also fairly hilly so you seldom get a flat lie.

Muirfield's signiature hole used to be the 14th or "Laughing Hole" but this hole has been changed over the years and lost it's character. I would now consider the 12th hole to be Muirfield's signiature hole. The 12th is one of the most difficult par 4 holes I have played. It is only 415 metres long, but it is uphill and sports a small sloped green. In the winter when there is almost no run on the Kikuyu fairways very few players are on in regulation.

Overall, the course has a wonderful character, is kept in good condition and has a pleasant clubhouse. It also has the best Greenkeeper's shed in the world!

I would rate the course in Australia's top 100. If you haven't played it yet, give yourself a treat.
