In my opinion, this course used to be one of the best in the Newcastle area.

Lately the condition of the course has deteriorated to the extent that I look elsewhere for a game of golf although I live nearby.

The greens seem to always be long, slow, soft and full of spike marks.
Must putts bounce more than they roll.

I play this course quite often and try to get a round in on Thursdays, $14 with a free cafeteria style lunch is pretty good value for money. The course is challenging without being difficult and as previously stated the 9th and 18th are heartbreakers if your on a bad run. The only 2 fault I have really found on this course is the distance between some of the holes. and importantly avoid this course course at all costs on a friday as maintenance is carried out for the weekend comps and it is not uncommon to be following a mowing crew around every hole and waitng to tee off for 10 – 15 minutes. other than that I rate this course 7.5 / 10 and definatley value for money when up against the rip off courses in the area ie NGC and PDGC.

Measuring now 5760m Par 71 from the back plates, it is relatively easy looking, but can have its challenges. The uphill (9th 18th) /downhill (1st 10th) are a little hard work on the legs. but are some of the easier holes.

The four Par 3s are relatively long (130-185m) but easy to get on in regulation, with bunkering not up to the standards set on the longer holes. Greens here are true and consistent roll, fairways are great too, with not many divots out there.

The island tee at the 333m 5th is easy on the eye, but not so friendly if you leave your tee shot short of the dogleg right, as you can not hit the elevated green guarded by 2 bunkers as there is large gully with a creek cutting across the fairway about 50m from the green front - found out the hard way and made double.

The par 5s apart from the 9th are weak. Many holes are relatively flat, but can be an enjoyable course, with Thursdays currently $12 all day play. Played here tday and had a fantastic time here. Strange how it is relatively unknown, but with its close proximity to the resort courses around, I now know where to go to get a cheap, challenging course.

I play this course alot. This course has wide fairways, lots of water hazzards, the 1st and 10th are downhill, with the 9th and 18th uphill (i think the architect took his anger out on raymand terrace) After a bad day at golf those uphill holes seem like mount everest. This course at par 71 is not the easiest hole to play, with the back nine being particulary long, with 2 par 4's being 460 meters, and 2 par 5s over 500 meters. I think this course is a brillant course, greens have nice consistant roll, not fast or slow, are hard to read. I say if your in the area go check it out!

Muree golf course is the sort of course most Australians would expect to find in a mid-sized country town. It is well laid out, has well-watered fairways and greens, plenty of mature trees and a fair supply of hazards. Whilst not a long course, there are plenty of holes that should make golfers of all standards think.

The experience of walking around this course is very pleasant with lots of greenery, birdlife and the odd koala, although the number of mosquitos in summer makes insect repellant a handy addition to the bag. The walking experience also makes the completion of the round feel that much better, as both the 9th and 18th are uphill holes. After a hard round they might seem like mountains!

My favourite holes at Muree are the 5th and 13th, both par 4's.

The 5th is a dog-leg right that requires a tee shot over the edge of a pond and up into a narrow corridor of well-established eucalypts. A ball hit too short will not allow a direct second shot to the green due to the trees and a ball that travels too far from the tee will be OOB. The ideal second shot is a mid-iron from a down hill slope, over a creek and onto the green which is on the side of another hill.

The 13th requires a fairly long tee shot over a creek and depression, then a short to mid-iron onto the near side of a double green. There's plenty of room and it's fairly flat so reasonable players should have a chance to birdie this hole.

At $19 a round this is a good value course for the social player such as myself.
