It’s amazing how good a golf course can look even in the middle of severe water restrictions! Especially so in autumn when there is so much colour.

The course was green following some rain a week ago yet all the storages are almost empty. The fairways are noticeably poorer than when I last played here a couple of years ago but they are falling from otherwise very high standards. In saying that they’re still fine to play on perhaps with preferred lies needed in some areas. I had assumed they would be significantly worse than they were given the signs stating Stage 4 water restrictions around the town.

The greens are still in excellent shape.

This is a lovely little country town course, set near a creek on the outskirts of town and parkland in style. Plenty of trees but not too much to make the course penal. In fact there is generally only a line or two of trees separating the adjacent fairways so you can’t get into too much trouble on this course. The course isn’t long but with a number of dogleg holes it isn’t short enough to really attack either. The lack of bunkers makes play easier too.

Small clubhouse only open during the few weekly comps otherwise use the honesty box.

Holes of note:

The first is a disappointing par 3 which serves only to get you onto the course proper.

The 4th is a short par 4 that calls for a well shaped drive to allow an easy attempt for birdie. The green sits down near the stream which borders one side of the course and is in a very lovely setting.

5, 6 and 7 all parallel one another and are standard country golf holes.

The 9th is an uphill dogleg hole that continues a format found regularly on this course, that is a requirement to be able to work shots off the tee so as to take advantage of the doglegs. They are generally not long enough to blast a drive down and then worry about the turn, so being able to shape the ball (the way you actually want rather than my ‘random’ shaping!) is a great advantage.

The 15th runs parallel to the creek at the back of the course and the 16th is a par 3 with an OOB paddock along it’s entire left.

Well worth a hit if in the NE of Victoria (which the marketing people call ‘Legends, Wine and High country).

When I visited this country golf course in Autumn 2003, it was in absolutely top condition, with absolutely superb greens and fairways. The course is located in a beautiful scenic valley, and features several outstanding specimens of native trees. The layout has several interesting and challenging holes, but the lack of any bunkers and a few sets of parallel holes of similar length was the only drawback. This course is obviously well looked after and is worth a visit when in the NE Victoria region.
