In my mind, 4.5 stars is a bit high for this course. The back nine is clearly superior to the front. The stretch from 12 to 16 is the highlight.
Disappointed with the offhand service in the pro shop. Wasn’t made to feel overly welcome unlike at the other two clubs in Orange. Also carries the highest social golf green free of the three.

We played in the local Orange tournament on the October long weekend, so all three courses were played.

Unfortunately the weather for our day at Duntryleague was horrific, we had 45 ml of rain overnight and played with rain and hail, single digit temperatures and a biting cold wind. Because of the conditions they had all bunkers out of play as GUR and preferred lies in place.

Having said that this is a good members course with reticulated good fairways and excellent greens. The course presented well, considering the conditions and had not much casual water, apart from the bunkers.

The layout is interesting with a reasonable amount of water in play. It is a slightly undulating course, but can be walked easily. Because we played in the tournament we can’t comment on the green fees.

Of the three courses in Orange it is by far the best and worth playing if you are in the region.

The course conditioning and challenges at Duntryleague are the golfing benchmark in Orange. Duntryleague measures 5976m Par 70 with four par 3s ranging from 151-199m, twelve par 4s ranging from 281-431m and two par 5s ranging from 444-471m.

Course has lush South African couch grass fairways with medium-to-tall tree lined fairways with over 150 different tree species over the course. The teebeds are a mixture of rye grass and kikuyu grass and are well trimmed. The medium-to-large sized bent greens are mostly 20-30m long and smooth with consistent speed. The green surrounds consist of rye grass and fescue in the fairway rough. There are a total of 42 bunkers on the course with only the 1st being entirely bunkerless hole.

FRONT NINE highlights include: the opening 431m Par 4 slight bend left 1st (index 5) from an elevated tee below the historic guesthouse to a bunkerless green; the 353m slight bend right 3rd (index 9) requires a blind shot over 190m to clear the rise with thick trees right to a green guarded by a bunker short right; and the 199m slightly uphill 4th (index 6) with a bunker 20m short left and another guarding the greenside short left.

The front nine is less bunkered than the back nine and is somewhat easier despite the opening and closing outward holes being long par 4s over 400m.

The back nine is what defines Duntryleague: more undulating terrain with varied lies, more bunkers than the front nine and the 3 hardest rated holes on the course.

BACK NINE highlights include the final 6 holes: the 404m straight 13th (index 1) has an elevated tee to the fairway below which slopes gently downhill to the green guarded by 2 bunkers; the signature 281m slight dogleg right 14th (index 14) with trees along the right guarding the big hitters from taking on the green. The fairway is fairly wide on the left to one of the smallest greens on the course guarded by 3 bunkers shortside and left with the pond collecting anything long left or over the back of the green. Classic short hole that could add a fairway bunker along the leftside to add more weight on your teeshot.

The 389m straight 15th (index 2) is slightly uphill with tall poplars along the rightside and OOB further right to a wide but shallow green guarded by 2 bunkers; the 444m short Par 5 slight bend left 16th (index 18) is the most bunkered hole by far on the course and boasts the largest green at 30-40m long. From the elevated tee there are 3 fairway bunkers 250-275m off the tee in the left rough which comes into play with the left-sloping fairway to the bunkers then a gully which collects balls about 150m out from the large green which is guarded by 4 bunkers; the easiest hole is followed by the picture-postcard 169m 17th (index 10) which is slightly uphill over the same pond which adjoins the 14th green to a front-sloping large green guarded by 3 bunkers; and the finishing 364m slight bend left 18th (index 3) is slightly uphill to a front-sloping green guarded by a bunker short right.

Overall the par 3s have well bunkered large undulating greens and are all challenging. Three par 4s are over 400m (at 1, 9 & 13) and the signature 281m short 14th is a great strategic Par 4 hole.

All of the city’s 3 golf courses are at a slightly higher elevation than the city centre itself. Duntryleague golf course ranging from approximately 870-890m above sea level with the clubhouse sitting underneath the historic guesthouse (built in 1876) which overlooks the course.

Good clubhouse facilities also offering 4 clay tennis courts, putting green, chipping green, and a short 150m grass driving range next to the carpark off Rowan Street.

Played here 23/03/2012 with $35 green fees. The club also offers $15 green fees after 3pm. Duntryleague is by far the most challenging and best conditioned course in Orange.

Having a larger city population than Bathurst (55km east) and Dubbo (150km north), Orange is the largest city in the Central Tablelands and Central West Region with over 40000 people.

Duntryleague, along with Dubbo’s 27 holes and Bathurst, are amongst the best-conditioned courses in the Central Tablelands and Central West region of NSW. Highly recommend a round here.

A very very good course that is one of rural Australia’s best courses. it plays through magnificent European trees that are very old and come in hundreds of variety’s. The sheer number and beauty of these tree’s is really something.
The course is in very good nick with good couch fairways and quick greens, also smooth and true. There are some excellent holes, the 5th being my favourite. Many other classic holes in a old-fashioned style. Not overly bunkered, but it doesn’t need to be. The trees are punishing and catch any errant ball. Driving is essential to a low score here.
You don’t even need to be a golfer to enjoy this place. If your in Orange it’s a must, and it’s a mile ahead of the other courses in town. A lovely old house to accompany.
Not to bad prices either.

Played Duntryleague on 24/4/11 ( we were playing all 3 courses in Orange over 2 days) and from the back markers the course plays its full 5976 metres with 3 Par 4’s over 400mtrs, surprisingly the course only has 2 par 5’s at 471mtrs and 444mtrs. The greens here are excellent are a definitely the highlight of the course and although they were pretty quick, if you find the right line they usually ran true.

Plenty of trees to catch stray shots but in most cases the width of the fairways are generous and there is not too much thick bushland to loose your ball but given the number of trees chipping out maybe your only option.

This is the first time I’ve played on fairways of South African couch and whilst it creates a carpet like effect I also found that it did not result in an entirely flat surface and your ball does not sit up as it would on most fairways, saying that, it does not affect the ball, it was just a characteristic of the course.

Overall a very enjoyable course and if you are in Orange make sure you take your clubs with you

Played 15 May 2010 with 3 mates. Greens very fast and true and were rolled during our round to be faster still. Fairways are South African couch providing a great surface to hit off. Rough is reasonably gentle but trees are significant. A very good course and a bargain at the price.

Of the 3 courses in Orange this is the best but the price reflects that. Great greens, nice challenging short holes and an all round good experience. If you go to orange for a weekend you must include this course in your golf plans.

Played this course one a whim while driving from Brisbane to Melbourne and had a memorable experience – so nice I came back on the return run. From the moment I drove through the old wrought iron gates I was reminded of the Forests of England’s midlands.

The clock almost seemed to slow down as I wound my way up the gravel drive weaving between misty evergreens…it felt a million miles and a 100 years away from the highways I had been navigating for the last two days. The site of the lush green fairways and beautifully manicured green of the first hole on my right confirmed what I already knew.

I overnighted in the guesthouse which was in theme with the whole experience and very cosy. Snuck in the front 9 before breakfast and then finished off a memorable stop-over on the back 9 before checkout.

Golf-lovers paradise!

This is a great course. All fairways are generous in width but if you do miss from the tee you have no choice but to take your medicine and play out sideways on most holes, they’re in great condition too. Even better are the greens, they’re as smooth as a glass table so true is the roll you get on your putts. The course is very well looked after and for $30 it was unreal. I’ll be back again for sure.

I am not normally one to write a reveiw but I played here over easter and had such an enjoyable game. Every hole is different to the last and the greens are in great nick. The grass on the fairway os like soft carpet and a joy to play of even if its brown.

If you are ever near orange you have to play this course for $27 it is the best vale for money course in the country.

Like the previous reviewer no hole sticks in the memory except for the last par 5 which is just so much fun to play and I don’t norlamy enjoy par 5’s being a 29 H/C its tough to string 5 good shots together.

Play this course even if you have to go to orange just to play it.

Driving in past the gatekeeper’s cabin to the beautiful old mansion , the leader of the opposition remarked on the decor. We expected something pretty special with the course and were not disappointed.

All facets of the game were covered with tricky greens, plenty of trees, water, bunkers and ,despite the wind, a fair score for a new teen handicapper.

Strangely no one hole has stuck in my memory, just an all round good course and regulation price.
