With the forced closure of the North Brighton Golf Club in 1950, Greenkeeper Harry Smith and Professional Charlie Booth were given the task of designing the new course on the banks of the Georges River at Milperra which they achieved with spectacular results. Gently sloping down to the river with native gums, Wattle and Melaleucas, the land was ideal for the purpose.

The beautiful lakeside par threes, many par fours with sloping fairways demanding well placed tee shots and two unusual and spectacular double dogleg par five holes all provide a fine variety of golf. The game at New Brighton Golf Club is a challenging but fair test of golfing skills with due reward for good course management. It is, as the club proudly claims, Sydney’s best kept secret.

I played there in 1 of the bonanza things there every 2nd thursday of each month. I won the c grade with 42 points and my partner and I won the 2 ball aggreget. I enjoyed the day. It is a very nice course and it is very dogleggy and you need to be strait every hole.

Played here last Thursday. The conditions are great. Challenging but very enjoyable course. Great value.

Tough course that is now in fantastic condition. Concentrate on hitting the fairways and making putts and you will score well, especially the 2 double dogleg par 5s.

Have played there several times and once off the 1st have never been held up. Green fees are reasonable and just off the M5 quite easy to get to. Recommended.

Just joined New Brighton this week. Played it recently. It has suffered from some storm damage but the course looks to be recovering very well. I really enjoy this course as every hole has it’s own charcteristic. Not just up and down a straight fairway. Greens are consistent and true. Nice clubhouse now after renovations. Looking forward to using the membership alot more.

Played NBGC yesterday and it was a great experience, easy to find, just off the M5 after the toll gates as you head to Canberra. I was surprised by how good the condition of the course was, it wasn’t much off Royal Canberra which I played the week before. Good greens, not too fast, tees were all perfect. The course is very winding, however the fairways have some width which makes it easier. Overall, very good experience, possibly too far for me to consider membership, however a very good spot for a round.

I have been a member of this course for about a year now all i can say its a course that never bores me.

Playing the course before i was a member i hated it as i never scored well there, its a tough course when you are not straight, i joined mainly because of mates that are members there, dont get me wrong its a beautiful course but i was not 100% sure i would like playing there week in week out. how wrong i was,you just dont get sick of playing this track there are so many ways of playing it and so many places you can end up, each week is a test, there are so many good holes that require you to think about what you hit not just walk up and bang a driver down the middle,my fav though is 17 from the plates 170m full water carry with a massive sloping green back to front. the club house renovation has almost been finish, the course is in great nic , i would recommend this track to anyone come and have a wack

Played here a few weeks ago on a weekday. $28 for 18 holes and easy to get to off the M5. No-one minded us hitting off from the members tees which were about two-thirds back on most of the tee off areas. Finished 18 holes in 4 hours.

The course condition was generally good. Very green due to all the recent rain, but some fairways were patchy suffering from lack of sun or from hard soil. The greens were in excellent condition, quite quick and consistent. Many of the holes were well seperated with scrub or hazzard each side which I liked. Due to the course length this requires many tee shots to be both accurate and long.

I quite liked the course design. Many of the holes give you different choices to make off the tee, and if you take a risk you can be well rewarded (and penalised) which is the way golf should be. As said in a previous review, an A-grader could really tear this course apart, yet it would be a nightmare for many C-graders. The clubhouse was a bit of a dive, but is being renovated.

Played over 30 times here so can give a fair comment. I am afraid not all of the positive comments below are correct and tend to agree with the first two writers. Although it is not a 1/5! Although the condition could never be termed exceptional, so 5/5 is also out.

It is a good, very tough course and if you live nearby it is worth joining as the subs are fair. It is indeed a great test of golf. But, it suits the 5-15 marker. Lower markers can probably tear it up, but it is too tricky (i.e. convaluted) and almost too long for C-graders. 3 & 16 are 3-shot par 4's for most weekend golfers. As usual, you must be straight.

I'd definitely recommend a social game for anyone in Sydney as it is just off the M5 and with a good run through/under the airport it is about 25 minutes from the city. Social green fees are also fair. Comp green fees for members are steep at $12.00.

But if you live far away and are thinking of joining because it is only 30 minutes on the M5, be warned you may never get a game as booking for the comps is the standard draw at the clubhouse 8 days before. I found it very popular and you basically had to be there or make some friends, (but groups do seem well established) to secure a Saturday or Sunday competition tee time. So with petrol prices as they are, think again about joining.

Members take priority on weekends, as they should, but a Monday or Friday round is possible for social players, and you could easily get in a social round on a Sunday afternoon during daylight savings.

The course condition is very mixed. Some of the best fairways I have seen ever seen (15 is the standout, but 1,6,8,9 and 14 are also good), comparable to the top courses, but also some of the worst (5 is ridiculous and 2,3 and 11 also poor).

Greens are true, which is excellent, but speed varies and in 2006 the condition has been extremely patchy.

Around the greens is very poor, and bunkers are average.

Tees outside 1 and 10 are woeful. 4 is basically a sand-pit.

Some great holes; some you wonder what they are doing there. My pics are:-

1 - A great starting hole, straight but with a fairway slope of left to right. Nothing to it, but you often walk off with a bogey and don't know why.

6 - The first and best of the famous double dog legs. After a tight tee shot, it opens to a beautiful scene. Three good shots and a birdie putt awaits. One hole to pick up some points.

8 - A rare standard par 4. Fantastic fairway with slight dogleg left. Open your shoulders and you will have a short iron in. Another hole to get some points on.

11 - The shortest part 3, but the one to attack on. Water left catches the over-drawn tee shot and bunkers surround the green. Don't go right or long.

14 - The first of a par 5 double header doglegs left. and is well maintained.

15 - The longest par 5, and the most scenic hole. Georges river on the right will catch the sliced shot. If you hit the stunning fairway from the tee, the lie will be perfect so go long with a 3-wood to leave a short iron approach. Par opportunity.

17 - The famous par 3. If you make it on the green, a 4-putt is still possible. Green slopes back to front with a couple of undulations.

Pro shop and clubhouse staff are friendly.

The clubhouse is dire, and there was talk of a massive clubhouse upgrade with a course re-design, but I believe this may have been shelved.

Members are very proud of the course. I just never 'got' the layout. It is unusual and just doesn't feel right. It has such potential, like so many other course but poor maintenance and inconsistency lets it down.

Thinking of joining - Yes, if you live locally, otherwise give it a miss.

Thinking of playing a social round - Go for it.

this course is a course like none other the lush and bueatiful fairways are decieving to the eye and if you arent straight you are in trouble, the layout is straight forward and always the staff are nice and considering the cheapness of this course i suggest anyone come down for a fun hit, whether a 32 marker or a scratch player always fun to be had

Firstly, I must say that this course is one of the better courses I have played on in Sydney. It offers a great mix of par 3, 4, and 5's with many challenges that makes club selection critical.

Maintenance of the course is exceptional with fairways being short and fast with very minimal dry patches if any and the tee beds are just brilliant to say the least.

The very well maintained undulating greens are abundant in surrounding bunkers and on some holes are mixed together with large water hazards to ensure that shots need to be accurate OR ELSE!

All in all, a great course to play on that will provide a challenge. Big risks mean big rewards if perfectly executed.

Measuring Par 72 6135m with 5 Par 3s ranging from 135-180 metres, 8 Par 4s ranging from 270-410 metres and 5 Par 5s ranging from 470-540 metres.

Quite a good course that challenges at every hole. Not every hole is a driver and long iron to hole, in fact, some Par 5s are 3-shot Par 5s instead of the usual drive the green in two shots courses. Par 3s are the most challenging and all are quite long, with the 17th hole having a 100 metre water clearance. Most holes have a dogleg left or right, so if you can shape the ball both ways (with control) you will carve this course up. Also the tee-beds are just carpet-like with lots of green grass for all tee markers. Just superb! The fairways on the front 9 are somewhat below standard set on the back nine with more bare patches evident. Greens are usually large and VERY well maintained.

Signature holes: Well there were many, so one from each:

Par 3: 180 metre 17th with 100 metre water carry to a large undulating figure-8 shaped green sloping to the water with 3 bunkers protecting it.

Par 4: 390 metre 3rd (index 1 on the course) as Par 4s were quite boring, but this hole had great scenery.

Par 5: 515 metre 6th with a double dogleg. The 3-shot hole with a large lake to tempt the aggressive big hitters, but donít try it, go for a layup. Green is surrounded 270 degrees by some sort of water hazard with 2 deepish bunkers.

Played here on 4/1/06 and paid $28 for a weekday rate and $35 for electric cart hire. I think it is $36 for wíends for 18 holes. Will play here again once the 7th hole is redeveloped, as the course is quite a challenge with lots of tree-lined fairways with many water traps.

I played here last week again and the course was in great condition.

I really like the layout and the way you have to manage your way around the course.

Give it a goo you will love it.

I don't like this course. The condition is moderate at best and so many holes are tricked up.

From the back tees our group were forced to hit clubs as short as 6 iron off the tee on a par 4 and 4 iron on one par 5. Too many shots across fairways not along fairways, so too many lay ups.

We played last week and had a great day out.

The course was quite challenging for a 15 marker but it was better than some of the bland boring courses we play in the South West.

Top Day all round

Played this course the other week as part of a group that tour from course to course. We are not members anywhere and like it that way. All four of us were very impressed from go to whoa with the course and staff at New Brighton.

Starting with the polite, knowledgeable (and can I say very attractive) young lass in the pro-shop whom by the way we found out in the club later spots the course 1 shot, to the ice cold beer at the end of the day fun was had by all.

The course is challenging and in very good nick, Congratulations go out to all concerned. The travelling circus will be back in town soon, thanks for a great experience!

I recently played at New Brighton and found the course to be in excellent condition. It has many picturesque holes with the 17th having a 175 metre water carry to the undulating green with trouble left and short.

The wildlife on the course is abundant and you are sure to see fury creatures while playing your round.

Green fees are reasonable and I am sure the staff will make it an enjoyable experience as they did for me.

So get out there and experience one of Sydney's best kept secrets.

I played New Brighton a few weeks ago.
I found it a great challenge. It has a bit of everything that can come into play if you are not careful.

They seem to be about to start work on a new club house that is worth millions, this I think will make it one of the best Group 1 courses in the region.

I will be playing it again soon for sure.

The double dog leg 6th with a lake is a great hole (Par 5).

When I first started playing golf, this was one course that use to scare me. It was tight and if you were not accurate, the ball would ultimately be lost in some of the heavy wood lined rough.

Thank god, my game has improved and went to play it the other day. I thought the course was in good nick although the greens here are typically quite soft - but still true.

You do not play this course the traditional way. For example in some of the par 5's I would use 3 x 5 irons to get on the green. I think this course is great for a change from your typical "driver off the tee type" courses.

If you like a course with a bit of variety where it's not just a case of long and straight then this is a great choice. There are decisions to be made on every tee, it's not just a case of reaching for the driver on every hole (although a few have very forgiving fairways). The course is tree lined and relatively pictureque.

The greens are true and can run quick. Several are undulating and make putting a challenge but get the pace and line right and you'll be rewarded.

It also caters to players of all handicaps. Several of the par fives have a risk v reward element. Yes you can cut the corner off the dog leg and get on the green in two but the shot is not without risk. Get in wrong and take double bogey. For the more conservative minded, long iron, mid iron and wedge may leave you with a birdire chance.

Choose your tee time carefully in the summer - it gets hot!

As a relatively new golfer on a high handicapp (45), I found the course daunting at times while re-assuring at others. The course feels like it suits those who can't shoot the ball a mile - so good shot planning and execution are important.

The course has beautiful surrounds - water near/around most holes and natural bush for the rough. There are a number of doglegs (and a double dogleg) to frustrate - but if you're out there to enjoy playing golf, then at least you'll have a good chuckle and take some stories home.

While it may not be the most technical and difficult course around - for a beginner golfer like myself, I found that playing on an aesthetically pleasing course with opportunities for both elation and disappointment was good for both my golf skills and confidence.

I've played at other courses in the local area and this is definitely a greener one - free recycled water means the course is always lush - perhaps not as "good" as the "elite" and very expensive courses in Sydney - but worthwhile for those looking to play (or join) without blowing the budget!

Lots of trees and lots of scrubby water hazard stuff. Most of the fairways are pretty wide though, so if you focus of the fairway and not on the scrub you should be right.

Some of the holes are a bit ordinary. The 5th (Par 4) I had to hit 6 iron of the tee so I wouldn't run out of fairway. There is no other option. The 6th and 12th are double dog leg par 5's. I can get the ball long and high off the tee, but my playing partners, off higher handicaps didn't like the holes at all.

The greens have been crap each time I've been there.

24. andrew14966 | Rated | 26 Dec 2002 | Add A Review

I have played this course a few times & it has struggled over the years to find any decent condition. The fairways aren't too bad, but the greens are soft & poorly designed, & they regularly lose them.

A very poor, unusual layout. eg 12th hole is a double dog leg par 5. Quite difficult for the higher handicapper, but I hit a drive over the corner & hit a 7 iron to the middle of the green, knocking the put in for an eagle. I feel this punishes the wrong people. There are many holes like this on the course.

I have often walked off the course with a very good score (having won a few open days) without having struck the ball well.

I decided after my last round there, not to return.
