Ocean Shores Country Club

Far North Coast, NSW | User Rating: Rate-4 (4.0) | Add A Review

As soon as you arrive at Ocean Shores Country Club you will immediately be infused with the most important sense that this part of paradise offers …serenity.

Just North of Brunswick Heads and 40 minutes South of Coolangatta Airport in the Northern Rivers district of New South Wales Australia, is the magnificent championship golf course rated in the top 15 courses in NSW. Set in an area of natural flora with tidal lakes, rivers and mountain ranges as a backdrop, the picturesque beauty is spectacular.

Ocean Shores championship course was designed by Bruce Devlin some 30 years ago and has many unique features. The foremost of these is the enormous greens -13,000 square metres with the fifth green alone accounting for 1100 square metres – enough room for a house and tropical orchard.

The 18 hole layout comprises six par 3’s, six par 4’s and six par 5’s. This distribution lends itself to the unique nature of the course. The lush fairways and pristine greens set against a backdrop of bushland and the sparkling lakes make it one of the most spectacular courses in Australia.

Golfers often comment on the tranquility of the bushland setting with each fairway an island oasis mainly out of view from the other holes with just the sound of club on ball and the birdlife being the only distractions.

Played early October for the first time and was very impressed. Being only 40 minutes from the Gold Coast it’s an easy drive and less hassle than going to Brisbane.
The course condition and layout would be one of the best around and present a challenge for all levels of golfer. Being our first time round it was played off the whites but will certainly be back for a round off the back tees. The day was windy so some holes were a challenge into the wind, greens are huge and were excellant putting surfaces.
Whilst the facilities looked a little dated they had everything that is needed and had fantastic views either out to sea or back into the hinterland.

I read the reviews above with much interest.
I was a member of OSCC for about 6 years and got my handicap to 3 and found it to be a great club to be a memeber of. The fact that it has a high membership of retirees, many living adjacent to the course makes it a little insular, but nonetheless very friendly.
The problem with reviews like sone of those above they usually reflect the course as found on the day or the head-space of a person after a successful or not so round of golf.
The club is not hugely financial so that reflects to the club and course generally. As a member there you would find the course presentation dependant largely on the weather. The course sits low with tidal waterways, so during the wet season it can be inundated and that take it’s toll on grass growth and the ability for machinery to prepare the course. Given the right conditions it truly ranks as one of the top 50 courses in Australia.
From the back tees it’s tough, a monster on a windy day. That’s why the club can afford to give a player a dozen balls if they can play to thier handicap in Blue Marker Challenge !!! (they don’t give too many away on last Friday of each month).15 of the holes have water that comes into play.
I always tell those travelling to the Gold Coast for a resort week "give one of the resort courses a miss and play OSCC". Of those I feel only The Pines at Sanctury Cove has a better layout. Sure they are neater & more manicured but walk away from OSCC with a good round and you wont forget it.

PROS

  • Variety of golf holes, challenging the shotmaker, friendly, all comps are open, great value for money.

Cons

  • Presentation dependant on the weather, some may need a lot of balls,

What a little hidden gem! We played on Wednesday 14th Sept 2011 and it was absolutely beautiful, the greens were fast and fairly big so a lot of extra long putts which hurt my score but they were in excellent condition as were the fairways. Got a deal for golf, with cart, and lunch for 2 for $98, now you can’t beat that. The clubhouse sits on top of the hill overlooking the ocean so is a very nice place for lunch and dinner is very reasonable as well. Except for the holes going back to the clubhouse the course is fairly flat and wouldn’t be that difficult to walk. Excellent course, helpful staff and especially good value for money.

4 kiwis played this course and so far rate it the best course (also played Royal Pines, Coolangatta/Tweed Heads and many resort courses last year).
Wide variety of holes and need to place shots, it’s a thinker’s course.
Very helpful and friendly pro and staff, can’t wait to go back again. Great value for money!

6 par 3’s
6 par 4’s
6 par 5’s
Dont play the same par twice in a row.
Off the back tees as good a challenge as you will find especially when its blowing.
Massive greens which makes club selection even more crucial or you will find yourself with some very lengthy putts.
Great layout

54 in golf Australia best public courses 2010. How?
Soon as i turned up i felt disapointed by the dated club house and facilities. Didn’t improve on the course. No distinction between rough and fairways, the greens were ok, albeit inconsistant and the general appearance of the course looked average at best. Any ranked lower should feel agreived. In my opinion this course would struggle to make its way into my top 300.

Took advantage of the $45 inc lunch package and both big hitting son and I agreed it’s good value. Very long especially for an average length Baby Boomer like myself but the gorilla with me still struggled. One reviewer commented on the "shorter" par 5 first.

Not into the howling so’wester that we struck. Lucky we played the back nine first before the wind hit. Greens are huge and got quicker as the day progressed. Sand everywhere but not consistant, some fine and white, some coarse and grey, a couple like concrete.

Need a map for course virgins as the penalty for ignorance and an otherwise good shot is extreme. Many of the pretty painted boards on the tees bore absolutely no resemblance to reality. Housing and therefore OOB jumps out and catches the unwary.

Not a course for a casual stroll and if you are dead set serious about your golf play a practise round or take a guide. Well stocked halfway house and friendly clubhouse. Enjoyable but tough. The Relic.

Played a social round on new years day – early tee off if you can imagine a good start to the new year. Fantastic country course a little over an hour from the Gold Coast. A Challenging but fair course and we played it on the hottest day of the year. Some really long par 5’ and intersting par 3’s. Water comes into play if you are not having a good day with your drives off the tees and talk about sand, sand ,sand, we found and saw the bunkers everywhere ( not because of our bad play either). We found the staff to be excellent although if you were looking for a drinks cart, forget it, we couldnt even find a drink fountain?

For a country club I didnt really find value for money at over $50 but a picturesque course all the same and one I will be coming back to. Greens were in great shape except a couple getting a makeover.

Bunkers a bit dry and hard and the rough off the fairway a tad on the high side, glad we had a cart otherwise a bigger day would have been had…

Played a social round today. Fantastic country course. Challenging but fair. Some really long par 5’ and 3’s. Water comes into play if you are not having a good day with your drives off the tees. We found the staff to be excellent and the buggies were well maintained.

Value for money and a course we will definitely be coming back to. Greens were in good shape. Bunkers a bit dry and hard and the rough off the fairway a tad on the high side.

Play in the blue marker challenge the last friday of every month. Top quality course, and fantastic value for money. This is what amateur golf should be like. Play off 7 at my home course on gold coast, look forward to this comp over any other. If you like a real challenge, and think you can play to your handicap come and try this one. Greens as good as you`ll play. Great job Ocean shores

This course is beautiful, peaceful, friendly and challenging. It has always been a favourite of mine over the past 20 years. Hubby and I drove down 2 days in a row from Coolangatta during all the wonderful Gold Coast rain after Christmas. We were given reduced rates as it was tee up on all holes but we were still allowed a cart on paths. The staff are very friendly and the course although wet was in great condition. I still think it’s well worth the trip to play and stay and now the new highway is in it took 35 minutes to get there.

Play this course on the Blue Marker Challenge, held on the last Friday of every month, when it is set up at it’s most difficult (CCR 75). It is long, with (lots of) water on almost every hole and the pin placements must be seen to be believed – a real golf challenge, although good putters have an advantage. A couple of classic par 3’s, the 8th and 12th with 140+ metre water carries which can be very difficult when a strong wind blows from the NE. A couple of very long par 5’s, the 9th and the 14th which mean at least 3 wood shorts for the shorter hitters; the 9th in particular is a classic, uphill all the way and with a huge green sloping back to front which is lethally fast for over-ambitious putters, I’ve seen quite a few roll off the green putting down the hill! Play to your handicap here and you get a dozen balls, doesn’t happen often.

Worth the drive from the Gold Coast or Brisbane? Can be walked but it is a long journey from green to following tee so if it's hot, a cart is the way to go.

Wide fairways and absolutely enormous greens (tif dwarf) are the rule so take your best putting along. Apart from the 1st most of the 5`s are genuine 3 shotters dependent on wind of course. Best hole IMHO is the par 3 12th 180mtr plus water carry with bail out to left. Rest of course fairly unremarkable.

Length and water are the course`s main and repeating signatures, housing is intrusive and just plain nasty in some parts. Cheapish green fees make it value but below par condition and greenkeeping IMHO hurt this course more as time goes by.
