Played here for the first time, late in the afternoon and on a very windy day 5/7/11. Its only 9 holes and the fairways can be quite narrow but they are generally well covered, as are the greens.

The holes are generally short with some of the par 4 drivable, but do your self a favor and leave the driver in the bag and look for accuracy rather than distance.

Remembering what it is, a short 9 hole course, throw a couple of clubs in the car (I’m a 12 h’capper and could have gotten around with a rescue club, 7 iron, wedge, putter) and go and play Palm Beach. Its worth a trip for the location alone

I love playing here, I am a local and finding myself playing here at least twice a week. I have seen much better fairways and sometimes greens but the location running parallel to pittwater overlooking the water is breathtaking. Also very reasonable pricing here.

PROS

  • Awesome scenery, nice flat course very friendly

Cons

  • Thin fairways and bad quality due to hot weather and water restrictions.

Palmie is a fun little course. I’ve heard it described as a ’toy course’ before and that kind of fits.
The holes are simple and the course is completely flat but other than that its an alright place.
I do like how some of the holes run up the pittwater side of Palm Beach right along the beach so that you can have an uninterrupted view of Lion Island as you play.

Hey fairgo, good guess, I am a horticulture teacher and a member of Liverpool. Played Palm Beach about two years ago, got chatting to one of the greenkeepers and one of the committee members and just thought that the course didn’t deserve the harsh comments. Have not been back to Palm Beach since 2008! Do you know what its like at the moment?

Fullback- I have found some of your comments to be perplexing to say the least. Just on a whim I decided do some ’research’ as you suggested eddy do on ALL of your reviews… and alas- Comments about Palm Beach, Liverpool and Fox Hills are all positive. Why is this? I believe you have a somewhat bias view on the Course Maintainence Teams at these courses or contractors rather??? May I ask your profession? Horticulturist perhaps? Your brief encounter with the committee member at Palm Beach sure elaborated on some rather technical data… water restrictions on a golf course? surely they have exemptions under the business/industries exemption scheme??? Who knows, I could be wrong. Despite this possibility Fullback… from now on please consider being more objective rather than subjective.

Regards,
Fairgo

Following good rain in April 2010 I found this course quite fresh and green, certainly not burnt off as other reviewers reported. Greens and fairways were in good nick.
Awesome setting with pittwater next to course.
A bit pricey at $19 for 9 holes on a fri on a little toy course
Good for beginners as it’s small, flat, fairway all the way to the green sort of deal.
Not bad, I liked it.

What a waste of a holiday day trip.

Nice location but course is very ordinary with greens only slightly better than the sparse grass they presumably call fairways. Only need 4 or 5 clubs to get around & a crash helmet to avoid the balls flying everywhere. Had all intentions of playing 18 holes but after 9 had well & truly had enough.

Expensive when considering you can play a quality championship course on the way such as Mona Vale for less money & less mileage. Would only go back for a beer in the clubhouse.

I dont think “eddy” has any idea about greenkeeping. I played the course last week and it was fine. I asked one of the committee guys about the course and where it gets its water from. I was told it is irrigated completely with town water, and therefor must comply with Sydney Waters sever water restrictions. He said the course has not recieved adequate water for nearly 3 years, and during times of summer heat the course recieves only about 10% of the water it needs to survive every day. He also noted the course is built completely on beach sand, that drains very quickly and does not reatain any soil moisture for longer than a day or two, and the course is odviously heavily timbered with gums, figs, and palms that all have extensive shallow roots systems. These roots infest the soil profile that the grass is trying to grow in, and therefor take water from the turf. I think “eddy” needs to do little research before he posts critical comments on club staff on the internet. Sure the course could be a lot better, but thats the fault of the drought, site conditions and water restrictions, not the greenkeeper who adviously has his hands tied.

Dont bring driver.

Course is dead.

Prices are too high.

If you happen to be there, go to the beach instead.

I played here on Anzac Day afternoon and the course was in appalling condition. About half the area of the greens was sanded and marked as GUR, and the fairways were non-existent - the ball would bounce sideways on landing and it was easier to hit off the 'rough'. I am amazed they had the gall to charge anything, let alone full green fees. I know we are in the middle of a dry spell but other local courses seem to be coping. I won't be back.

Played here Monday 20/3/06 and played off blue championship markers, and it only measured 2046m Par 32 with 4 Par 3s ranging from 130-190m and FIVE Par 4s ranging from 255-320m. The flat greens were just cored, with no two-tiered greens in play. They had a tee-up all the way policy in play, due to the dry conditions, as fairways were very thinly covered, and looked dead by my standards. Teebeds were not that better, as I found it hard to T my ball through hard dirt! Holes are fairly flat straight (apart from the slight dogleg right on the 7th).

A lot has changed in the bunkering, with quite good bunkering to protect the small greens on ALL holes, as I recall. The best hole (or challenge) I feel is the 132m 2nd, with 2 large trees in front of the green, which is protected again by two front bunkers and 2 side bunkers. So, unless you the ball well, you will find it hard to stay on these tiny elevated greens. The longest hole is 322m 9th hole, which has a narrow T opening. Holes 3/4/5 has Barrenjoey Beach and Pittwater OOB on the left, so if its windy (which is more often than not), it is hard to stay on the long and narrow. The par 3s offer the best challenges here. Great little clubhouse overlooking the course and Barrenjoey Head, but other than that, nothing special.

Weekday green fees are $17 for 9 holes, I paid $10 for Mondays, so generally good value.

Played my first game there last week. I would imagine that it could get a little busy on the weekends, being one of only 2 courses on the northern tip of the northern beaches. Fairly short course, great for beginners - not much sand, no water, except for Pittwater which acts as quite a scenic backdrop.
