Challenging course with lots of water. However fairways are fairly wide and easy to hit. Fairways and greens are in immaculate condition even after the rain. Overall lots of fun to play at.

Despite some heavy rain in the morning, greens were fast and true. A bit of damp in places, but well maintained.

Courtsey car and halfway house ran out of food though – and with a tee time at 11.30 lunch would have been appreciated.

would not play here again. talk about joke. no course marshall, completely over booked. lucky if there were less than 3 or 4 groups each hole waiting to play. did not end up finishing my round. i thought going on 6hrs was absolutely ridiculous.

Played here the week after all the rain, couldn’t play on our scheduled day as the course was closed. Making allowances for this i was still disappointed in the layout. It had been highly recommended, i personally found it too flat with few surprises.

Played at Colonial for the first time on Friday afternoon, not very well but loved the condition and layout of the course. As said in most of the previous posts, the average golfer will need plenty of prunes as there’s heaps of water. You’ve gotta be staight and resonably long of the tee to gain good vantage to the greens. Left the course a bit disapointed after we copped a heavy rain deluge from about the 12th hole.

The Colonial Course was in very good condition – we were very impressed.

We had a terrific afternoon (Our golf skills left a little to be desired but that is not the fault of the Golf Course)

All staff were very friendly and helpful. We were very satisfied and will definitely play this course again on my next visit to the Gold Coast.

Over-booked so play was very slow. There were groups of 5 and more playing together. The course is flat with lots of water and greens are slow. A good challenge and good food in the cafe.

Played here on Mother day as the day that we had originally booked was rained out and we were unable to get a start. Extremely friendly pro shop staff on both days. What an awesome course. A must course to play if you are on the Gold Coast. Plenty of variety to make you think about your next shot. Just enough water to keep you honest. WILL definitively be back

Good value, good condition and not as hard as the reviews make out.

We were not able to hit off at our set booking time of 2.15pm. We arrived at 1.50pm. They did not have us booked in for any particulat time. We were made to wait fo 3 groups to go through in front of us. As a sesult of the wait we were unable to complete 18 holes due to faiding light. The condition of the course was very good.

We had a wonderful afternoon thank you. We felt the course was in excellent condition. Shame about our game!!! Water is certainly a hazard.

Course was in excellent condition. Very good, if not challenging layout. But what was the deal with the amount of people playing on a Wed? Waited for every shot. 3 of us, took over 4hrs.

15. greg70121 | Rated | 27 Apr 2009 | Add A Review

the codition of the course at the moment is brilliant and worth a visit and the layout is nice enough (a bit too much water)
the only bad thing is the greens dont hold and once landing a good shot it usually rolls off the green or further away than you antisipate.

Played here and unlike some of the other comments didnt have good experience with staff. It started in pro shop given two keys told to see someone at shed for carts after standing around for 5 mins and watching other people come and go went back to the pro shop and was told will if no one there just grab what ever.

Watched three groups tee off and the group in front asked whe our tee time was, much to my suprise they had a 1:15 tee time the same as me I said to them that was the same as our tee time they said that the club does this often that they have no idea when someone books through iseek and that he had rang and booked.

Then some guy from the course came asking what our teetime was because the group behind was off at 1:08 where was he half hour ago i asked and said if he was here that things may not be all out of whack and how could you have double booked 1:15 he told me to take it up with general manager.so we got to watch another group go 1:28 before we got to tee off.

Most clubs have between 8-10 mins gap for tee off these have 7 mins and double book them it seems that all they are after is your money not a happy time .If you don’t mind a long game 5+ hours and being stuffed around go here.

Played here last week, just moved to bris from WA and what more can i say course was amazing even after the storms. Played with 2 of the most enjoyable members i think i have ever played with. Gave us the low down on everything, how the greens sloped where to drive to made it a great day. Will make many more trips down to play this course.

PROS

  • Great lay out. Lots of water to play around. Perfect greens even if the members say they were slow.

Cons

  • If your not hitting straight, take a practice bag full of balls lol

Played last week and the course was in great condition even though there was heaps of rain dumped on the gold coast. I heard this course it bad when there is alot of rain around but I was very suprised at how dry it was, must hav done extra drainage or something. Greens where great and fairways and rough where even better, one of the best going around on coast at the moment

Played during the week, what a great course. Great condition, polite staff and enjoyed abeer on the balcony after. Water is not an issue, don;t see what al the fuss is about.

The course condition was lush and greens rolling as true. The water no more penalising than any other resort course you can have the privilege of playing. A fantastic place to have a beer in the outside sails area at The Colonial style clubhouse after the round awaited us at the completion of the round and the friendly staff certainly made the difference between a good day and one to remember. As in the headline – it was certainly challenging golf at its fairest!

Fantastic Golf Course.

23. scenicpeak | Rated | 28 Jul 2008 | Add A Review

Just a senseless course. Lets have lots of water hazards and pretty much nothing else. The fairways camber into the hazards which can make good shots painful.

24. b1_ | Rated | 11 May 2008 | Add A Review

Water trap overkill – the entire course is a repetitive mix of water trap, fairway, water trap, fairway, with no elevation to speak of. Will cost you $20 in lost balls on top of green fee if you’re anything but straight as an arrow and hitting your lengths. If you’re a beginner, take your cheapest balls or avoid completely. If you’re a low handicapper enjoy the challenge. Overly fast ‘billiard table’ greens. Bunkers shallow and too firm underfoot. No complaints about fairways. Picturesque and lots of vocal bird life add charm. Nice views to Goldcoast hinterland.

Like most courses, hit the fairways and it isn’t a hard course – seriously.

However, when the wind is up and the black tees are in force, be prepared. It is a very tough course.

With all the recent rain the rough has grown to extremely tough conditions making the course very hard. When the rough is cut short the course is often unfair as the fairways camper towards the water and the ball NEVER stops!

The course was in magnificent condition despite some recent dry weather. The greens were terrific and fairways well grassed. The only negative I could muster was that the first cut off the fairway was too low leading into water hazards. A drive or long iron which was only marginally off centre had the potential to roll un-abated along the contours and into the water hazard without a noticeable first cut to hinder its progress. Otherwise magnificent.

A great course that really tests golfers off the tee. The water makes every shot interesting and the surrounding mountains really do make the colonial a picturess golf course

I am a female member of The Colonial and i think it’s Australia’s best kept secret. There are comps most days with winning vouchers to spend in the pro shop or club house/bar. The scenery from the course is breath taking. The staff and management are awesome and the course is ALWAYS in perfect condition. I am an equal member and I am treated with respect at all times. Any visitor will truly enjoy this relaxed friendly atmosphere. what water??? you men don’t see enough of the fairways…haha

This course is much of a challenge and is definately a way to test your patience. About 17 of these holes are wet so few balls may not get your far. I would rate Robina Woods higher than the Colonial but certainly a great course

I would not recommend this course to anyone, in terms of playability there is lots of water but the course offers nothing else. Comparitively to the other courses in the area it does not measure up. Badly designed with no logic behind the holes and no signs on the course to tell you where to go its a guessing game. The greens were good and true but had little undulation and in general it was pretty boring. There is lots of water which gives you a challenge to avoid, but where most courses have ridges leading up to the water the fairways almost all take your ball in. I shot an 87 with the wind blowing a fair bit and didn’t enjoy playing at this course.

Played at Colonial midweek in November after 2pm played at $55 twilight rate. Staff were great, felt very welcome. First thing i noticed was the speed and wuality of the greens. Made the error of not using the practice green before the round started, 3 putt, 3 putt, 3 putt. Couldn't imagine better greens considering the lack of rain recently. Course is challenging enough without being too punishing. Stray off the tee too much and you'll be wet, although you needn't be too accurate with fairways and rough generous to catch the average shots. Quality of course as good as any around. Definately recommend playing here, i will again for sure.

Further to my review of the 26/9/2006 despite 3 emails to course to advise them of my experience which were forwarded to the General manager, I am yet to receive a response. If this is the way they treat customers I can hardly recommend the course when there are numerous other courses on the Gold Coast at equal or cheaper prices. I found Coolangatta tweed (both river & West courses) to be be far superior and half the price.

33. thrupster | Rated | 26 Sep 2006 | Add A Review

The course whilst an excellent and well designed layout had undergone extensive maintenance (scarifying fairways) and we were not advised of this at time of booking nor were we offered any discount on green fees.

I think it would be very enjoyable and challenging course in top condition but we were denied the opportunity to find out. I suggest you contact the course to check for renovations or maintennace prior to booking and prepurchasing your green fees to maximise your experience.

This course is great! Played early morning and loved it. Staff are very friendly as well as the other golfers. Fairways and greens are both fantastic.

I also played Robina Woods earlier in the week and I think The Colonial is much better than that.

It is certainly worth a round if you have the chance. I will be playing there again for sure!

This is a great track. Heaps of water but it's only in play on errant shots & "hero" shots.

Play this course conservatively and you'll score well. If you play here in an Ambrose event you will have a lot of fun & lose a lot of seeds.

The greens are not what they should be, on truly mint courses the ball rolls like it has a magnet under it holding it down. Here you can expect a bumpier roll which tends to make puts not break as much as they would appear to.

When the wind gets up the yardages both ways become critical and you'd be well advised to take a little extra time to get them right.

What a challenging golfing experience! Having played The Colonial from the back markers I can truly say that despite the "golf market rumours" that there is too much water on this championship layout, while this does loom for the occasional errant shot, the course condition was lush and greens rolling as true. I played at the Colonial for the simple reasons it is meant to be a good quality course, and i had a two for one voucher (gotta love em).

I came, i saw, i was conquered... But not without some good parting shots!

I feel a true test of any golf course, is how well it tests your whole game. The Colonial tests your long game, your short game, most likely unless you are Tiger Woods your recovery game as well. No two holes seem to have played the same, good shots were rewarded, while poor ones usually suffered. There was enough water to stay in your head, but not enough to seem stupidly difficult for the average hacker (ie, you will find water)

An attractive course, well laid out and easy to navigate. The greens, fairways and rough are kept in good condition everywhere (there was some water build up on two fairways, not sure if that was sprinklers though).

My dad who i played with, found it a bit average, but he is a member of Brisbane. My only real complaint is about lazy golfers not fixing divots (use a tee if you don't have a repairer! Then pat down with your putter).

The facilities are good, with rest points, lots of drinking fountains, food and drink cart (don't have any of the sausage rolls, please), pro shop had most things you could want, halfway house was more like a coffee shop and also sold some basic golf equipment...

I would find it hard to shell out full price for this course, but it is definitely worth a round or two if you have the opportunity.

Played it for the first time on the weekend and was very impressed witht he course layout and quality of the fairways and greens. Well laid out and nice facilities including numerous on course shelters and a halfway house which came in handy during the brief showers we experienced during our round.

It was good value @ $45 (via a two for one voucher) but not exceptional considering there are other Gold Coast courses around for $100 that include GPS installed carts.

Good quality course that I would play again but not at the FULL price.

Hi, I am a Junior Memer at Colonial golf course, and admittedly im no Tiger Woods but the course definently isnt too hard, or too easy! There if definently plenty of water to avoid and I lose quite a few balls everytime I play. But it's always worth it. I enjoy playing there whenever I can. The staff are friendly and are always helpful if you need something. If you havent played there and are hesitating because of the price. It's definently worth the $87 or so. If you are visiting the Gold Coast and want to play at the best clubs while your here it's definetly one of them. I am sure you will enjoy your game there.

Bring plenty of water balls with you. The fairways and greens are in very good condition. The course is a bit windy and pleasantly long. Overall a great course.

Hi, im a member of the colonial and I would defently recommend this course for everyone to play. It is long off the black tees and can be a true challenge in the windy conditions. 17 holes have water on them so bring plently of balls. The par 3's all have some type of water carry off the back pegs.
