Port Augusta measures 5761m Par 70 with four par 3s ranging from 146-165m, twelve par 4s ranging from 312-408m and two par 5s ranging from the 513m straight 2nd (index 2) and the 451m 17th (index 17) which doglegs 45 degrees to the right from 200m off the tee to a green guarded by 2 shortside bunkers.

Course has fairly wide and quite lush kikuyu fairways with patches of couch grass. The rough has softish red sand/dirt with clover weeds and even some patches of couch grass with short tree-lined fairways with some clusters of saltbush. The medium-to-large sized greens have tifdwarf couch grass greens which are a little slow. There is also a mix of couch/kikuyu grass surrounding the greens.

There are 31 bunkers on the course which is the most I’ve seen outside of Adelaide. Have to say I am not a fan of the tifdwarf greens but like Roxby Downs the hot desert climate is difficult to maintain bent grass greens.

Highlights include: the 147m 3rd (although index 18) has 4 pot bunkers guarding its surface; the 165m 4th (index 14) has 2 bunkers with the rightside bunker having a deep face; the 160m slight downhill teeshot 10th (index 9) with 5 bunkers guarding the green; the 408m Par 4 straight 16th (index 1) with a bunker short right and the 356m slight dogleg left 18th (index 5) which plays uphill from the dogleg corner with a bunker short right.

The par 3s are well bunkered and the par 5s are quite challenging. There are only 3 bunkerless holes on the entire course (1st, 13th & 14th). But there are holes with similarities to the hole before like the par 4 stretch from holes 5-9 and a number of boring back nine par 4s.

Played here 21/09/2011 with $30 green fees. Better grass greens than Roxby Downs which is about 2.25 hours from Port Augusta. PA is probably the best course in the area anywhere north to Alice Springs and east to Broken Hill but similar to Whyalla’s course which is 45 minutes south. Given that all other courses nearby offer barely basic golf facilities give PA, Whyalla and Roxby Downs a go if in the area.

just played 9 holes on my way through and highly recommend the course. Have been driving past this course for along time thinking a round would be good there and I wasn’t dissapointed. the course opens with a pretty easy par 4 with a slight dog leg to the left followed by a par 5 which is 513m. The next 2 holes are par 3’s which are 128m and 164m respective. The 5th is a par 4 dog leg which if you go right you might be in trouble during winter/spring to find your ball. Overall I give this course 4/5 but need to play the back 9 to give it a better analysis.

PS the ladies behind the bar are very friendly along with the members

Turned up for a hit in the Thursday comp mindfull of the ’no golf over 38 degree rule’. It was 37. So the five of us went round in a group. Another dozen had played in the morning. Despite the heat we had an enjoyable round with the fairways in not to bad condition even in the drought. Greens were pretty good except for the thirteenth which was a house lawn.
With the par threes together it felt like ages between drives. Some toubles off the fairways, sand ,trees and gidgee. Always seemed to have a shot at the pin though. Better than most courses in the area but if you need a cart there are only three for hite. Bar doesn’t, open til late either! Very friendly when it does though.
Have to take half a star off for the very annoying hordes of midges however, bring gallons of Rid.
The Relic.

The last grass green course before Alice Springs if you are heading North, and the first since if you are heading South. A good course, well designed and in good condition. The fairways and greens were great, but don’t miss the fairway or you could find anything. An unusual layout in that each nine has two par 3’s back to back, so the 3rd and 4th are par 3’s and the 10th and 11th and they are the only par 3’s on the course. A par of 70 for the men, rated 70, and a par of 72 for ladies, rating 72. Well worth a game if you are in the area and the green fees of $25 are very reasonable.

port augusta is a pretty good course considering how dry the area is. the fairways are hard and dry as to be expected. the greens are hard and fast but are pretty good in comparison to some adelaide courses. the course is pretty open but the real problem lies in the layout. two par 3’s in a row on both the front and back nine. and holes 7 and 8 are 320m metre holes dead straight. there isn’t enough variety in the course. this can’t be blamed on the weather.

all in all its not a bad course. give it a try.

Port Augusta is often referred to as the 'Crossroads of Australia'. If your travelling around Australia from east to west or north to south you will pass through here at some stage. Most likely you will have been travelling through desert or dry area's and the sight of the golf course will give you a nice suprise. The fairways and greens are in very good condition, particularly considering the dry climate. For a desert course the rough is fairly friendly, with more tree's than bushes. There is even some water to hit over. The club sits on the side of a hill so there is a bit of relief to make things interesting. The clubhouse has one of the best views in Australia - you look across the first tee to the spectacular Flinders Ranges. Playing golf in the desert is a rare treat so bring your clubs if your passing through.
