Measures 5806m Par 70 with five par 3s ranging from 140-168m, ten par 4s ranging from 318-421m and three par 5s ranging from 411-508m.
A pine tree-lined parkland style layout with 95% couch fairways (only the 7th hole has kikuyu fairways) and a mixture of bent/kikuyu grass rough under the trees and around the edges/surrounds of the bent grass greens. The bent grass greens are mostly smooth with consistent roll but not overly quick. The course has 19 bunkers with most of them on the back nine.
FRONT NINE highlights include the criss-cross teeboxes of the 390m slight downhill dogleg left 4th (index 1) with trees on the dogleg corner and red stakes far left and over the back of the bunkerless green and the 421m downhill slight dogleg right 7th (index 3) with a fairway which slopes right to a bunkerless green. These holes could have a few bunkers…then the short 318m 5th (index 14) doglegs nearly 90 degrees right from 180m off the tee then plays slightly uphill to a large green guarded by a deep bunker short right.
The front nine is the older part of the course which plays up a hill towards Atkinson Street with the 1st and 9th teeshots hitting across Brown Street!
The back nine begins with you crossing Dodsworth Street and starts on the higher side of the hill with views of Mt Jerrabomberra 779m above sea level then by the 16th you find your way down alongside the Queanbeyan River…
BACK NINE highlights include, the 344m 11th (index 8) with a blind teeshot to a slight dogleg right with OOB along the left from the tee to the green guarded by a bunker short right, the 393m straight 14th (index 2) with a fairway bunker 210-240m off the tee on the left with a front-sloping green guarded by 2 bunkers shortside, the 508m slight dogleg right 16th (index 6) with the Queanbeyan River along the left with a wide fairway to a 2-tier front sloping green guarded by 2 bunkers shortside, the 148m slightly downhill 17th (index 17) guarded by 3 bunkers with a front-sloping green, and the 355m 18th (index 4) doglegs right 210m from the tee with the clubhouse overlooking the green guarded by 2 bunkers rear and right.
The back nine is my favourite as it is the most challenging and scenic part of course. Overall, the par 3s are all of similar length, par 4s here are quite varied whilst the par 5s are generally weak.
Played here 23/5/2011 with only $12 green fees on Mondays and reasonable fees on weekends. Whilst I do not rate the course as anywhere near the challenge of RCGC, Yowani or Federal the closing 3 holes here are as scenic as anywhere in Canberra.
Located no more than 15 kilometres from Parliament House, QGC is worth the drive just to play the back nine.
