Big contrast in opinions I would agree. If you have not played the course "in a long time" I would suggest you get down and see what an improvement it is from the "Riverwood GC" days. I live locally and have played the course on and off for the past 15 years, and it is a complete transformation. I have played it quite a lot this year.

Granted, I too have also played in rounds around the 5 hour mark which is completely unacceptable. luckily this is the exception not the rule. However the pro does need to stop letting more traffic on than the course can handle. Can be extremely frustrating. I played in a comp recently and they let on complete hackers or "brogans" before the last groups had made the turn. UNACCEPTABLE. You do have to keep in mind this is a public course. It doesn’t pretend to be anything else. Hackers are welcome, so they should be, AFTER the last group in the comp makes the turn.

I can only assume the below post was played close to the greens being cored, as they are quite true in my opinion. Fairways are also very good, especially to what they have been historically.

THE COURSE DOES NOT DRAIN WELL. It can take a long time to recover after the rain. Too much traffic only compounds this. You do have token this in ind and avoid after rain.

All things considered, I suggest you play if for yourself, hopefully on a quieter day. I have no doubt you will be surprised on the improvements. I cant see how Auburn is any less flat, and is much more straight up and down and "boring" in my opinion – and generally just as much traffic. I play there regularly also in social clubs. Can take up to 5 hours. In the end they are both public courses.

I enjoy both, but prefer Georges River. Could be managed much better. Course condition seems to be improving constantly.

how could here be such a complete opposite from the last two reviews, I haven’t been back there for a long time and dont plan on it .
"HUH" , crowds, general public thrown in with members, crap conditions. Sounds like the the place hasn’t changed at all

This is the worst course I have played. 18 holes took 5 and a half hours and the pro just kept letting people on. The fairways and greens are in horrible condition, it had notmrained in a week and it was still muddy and sloppy. The crowd was full of bogans who just kept hitting up on us even though ther was five groups ahead playing slow. The course is flat and boring…

If you want a good value for money course in west Sydney play at auburn golf course…

Played here in the Sunday comp. Really really impressed with where the course is headed. Most fairways are in great condition and the greens, while not being lightning quick, roll true. really enjoyed the layout. Some great holes. Start of the back 9 is very strong, and 3 pars are hard to get. 18 was a great finish. Course needs some stakes for distances. Plates in the ground were hard to find and the group wasted time pacing around looking for them. Definitely a lot of work being done, and its paying off for mine. Not as challenging as some other tracks near by, a couple of short par 5s near a lot more bunkers, (course in general could use more bunkers) but again, the layout is not straight up and back, and is very enjoyable with a lot of potential with continued work. Worth a good value round if you haven’t played for some time. Good value.

PROS

  • Interesting layout
  • Good Fairways
  • True greens

Cons

  • Needs more bunkers
  • Distance stakes needed as well as the plates
  • Can miss of thee tee and hit it straight back

To the 23 Hcp Hacker – what other local course are worse then this one apart from joke land Riverlands , Both are not a true golf course

Cetainly not the worst course I’ve ever played, and great for a beginner or perhaps a more experienced golfer who is coming back after a lay off. A couple of good holes too like the 10th, and the 18th which are a test for any one. Great practice facilities with the full driving range although you do have to pay for balls, and the club house and pro shop are clean and modern.

It’s not often I am motivated to write these types of reviews but the recent (i.e. 2010) comments are so wildly varying (both positive and negative) that I feel some balance is needed.

I am a member here (23 Hcp) and have been since Feb 2010. No, I am not a committee member nor do I have any allegiances to any current committee members. I have lived in the general local area for 30+ years and have reasonably regularly played most of the other courses nearby over that period (incl: Bankstown, Riverlands, New Brighton, Liverpool, Hurstville, etc).

I believe that over the past few recent years they have done a magnificent job in improving this course from the goat track that it was up until the mid 2000’s. Currently, some holes are in near perfect condition and some are below expectation. After the recent wet weather, the warmer days to come will hopefully assist with bringing the the whole course standard up.

In general, I think that the current condition is definitely better than as described in the last two reviews and would encourage anyone to have a game there. It is not Bankstown or Liverpool (nor does it try to be) but is significantly better than some others around the area.

Played Georges River last Sunday and I know its not a group 1 course but expected far better as I have read some improved reviews in recent times. Cost me $12 as a visitor to play in the comp, cheap but nasty if you look forward all week to a game of golf. Maybe this course is ideal for a 20+ marker but not for a A grader such as myself who lives for golf.

The fairways were mowed far to short, very patchy and bare. I had many from the middle of the fairway which were dirt lies due to no grass coverage as the fairways have been shaved of all their grass. Tees were terrible, and the course had not enough marking on the fairway for yardage etc. It was impossible to chip around or close to the green due to the bare lies. The greens have been cored only a few weeks ago so it is not far to rate there surface.
Probably will play there again but not in near future as my friend is a member. Rated the course 3/10 at best in this condition.

well , have to say after all the bad things I mentioned about this course on this site I am now eating my words as deserved.Over the past months this course has really come on so much with all the hard work from staff. Fairways are in great condintion now under circumstances due to lack of rain and the greens give them a couple of weeks and they will be supurb after coring. Apart from the course you wouldnt get a nicer or better bunch of members to accoisiate with as that has always be the case.As for the Firey restaurant the food is excellent cooked to perfection also the beer is so cold , just perfect after a round. I can see this place is going one way -TO THE TOP and growing from popularity with more members joinig each week comming from everywhere. Great stuff guys keep it up.

I recently played Georges River again, and was once more surprised at the improvements made to the course. Only getting the opportunity to play here once or twice a year, it always seems that something has improved. Granted the developments to the course might cause some inconvenience (like recent weed spray which is largely confined to the weeds rather than whole fairway), these are clearly necessary long-term investments to keep on improving. Greens were in good condition (maybe a patch on one or two greens, but nothing in play), and the course is more challenging due to all the changes that have gone on. The new pro-shop knocked me over! I’ll be stopping in for my next set: prices were good, but the staff really sold me. Good set-up for the 19th hole – staff in the restaurant are friendly (going back for a dinner soon), beer is cold, and the food is good. Looks like it also works as a function centre.

Sorry to say but now this place is probably at its worst state for some time now ,very disapointing. So many rumous flooting around there about whats happening for members wich are treated second to social players but nothing has changed there .Seems as if they dont wont members at all. Management is nothing but arrogant , ok in the pro shop and bar girls are sweet cant see what a committee is for except glory hunters and primadonnas .The course is really going to wreck and ruin never see green staff , rarely watered . Fairways just poisoned all over the place. Its amazing weeds not just poisoned the accual couch grass in places like on the 4th
. All fairways now in total shocking state. Greens gone down hill to the hilt. Its a shame after the amount of money that was spent on the place to bring it up to a fairly nice course and enjoyable to play.Things could be better again if anyone cares but seem no one does, just take your money

Been going downhill for few months now, problems with the proshop – there is no organisation eg social players put amongst competition, starting at 6am when the daylight allows earlier play, cards dont have information printed on them (eg handicap, name), website has results of October, comp results are not timely published. Get a grip please.

I played a couple of rounds there in November and yes the staff were very good, friendly and easygoing. The practise greens were in good nick but they need nets for driving, which I have a feeling they are about to get with the new owners…great job.

yeah not a bad track, looks great from henry lawson drive and around clubhouse but still a bit how you goin over the airport side, great course to get your confidence back, you can have lash and end up on another fairway but still have a shot back, not too many hazards 11 bunkers in total, still not a bad walk and good hit out though.

Hey! I am a juniour member at Georges River and although the course isn’t championship quality it is one o the best clubs to be a member of in Sydney. The staff are friendly and are always there to help you fix up a few problems in your swing. The Juniour development has improved alot. Last year Georges River put their first Encourage Shield team in and this year we are entering an Eric Aply (U24’s) Sheild Team and are hoping to enter a Junior pennants team.

Course is in good condition with green fairways. Tees are genarally good, however work needs to be done on the 4th, 5th & 9th tees. Greens are a little rough at the moment due to constant greenkeeping work but be wary of the 12th, extremely fast green but in terrible condition. Other than that the course is in top condition, but for some reason the greenskeepers keep chopping down the trees, which makes the wind a bigger factor being right next to Bankstown Airport.

Membership is a good price and Green Fees are only $27 for 18 holes on a weekend. Well worth it for the service and the enjoyable game of golf. Good course with some long Par 5’s and some Par 5’s reachable in 2 with a good drive.

Many People bag the course out purely because they played here years ago and back then it was absolutely shocking, but with the property being Leased off the council for over 50 years and millions of dollars put into the course, the course has improved dramatically.

Another downside is that thanks to some stupid idiots that decided to break into the course in the middle of the night and steal all the range balls less than a year ago, the driving range has been shut and is now an irons only warm up area (using your own balls).

Hope that all golfers come and have an enjoyable day with great service, and enjoyable day of golf and a few drinks in the clubhouse afterwards.

Bagging a golf course is akin to bagging a meal after you have eaten it. Show some class. There are too many people trying to do their best with budgetary constraints to have morons knocking their efforts. I too didn’t play well but can see the effort being put in. Still a long road ahead.

This place has really gone down the tube even though there is a bit more grass . With their new club house they are charging five star prices on a one star golf course.Stuffed up the 17th fairway. The members are getting taken for a ride so I here. Like they say “POORMANS THUMB DOWN”

This course has improved alot in the last year. The greens and fairways are in really good condition except the par 3 5th where theres a big bare patch on the green. With the new club house being built i think the course will only get better and for $20 green fee’s it well worth it.

Alot of work has been done on and off the course. The new club house is well under way and the recent rain has most of the fairways looking great. Just keep an eye out for the CROWS!!!

Played this course last week. A massive improvement compared to where it was a year ago. Decided to have a another go on this course from 'Petrosian's thread. The fairway's and greens are well maintained and the friendly staff top it off. Great to see a course improve so much! Will be back for sure :)

this is a good course and considering the drought (tusay the rain) it has a nice basic layout and is good golf for all some challenging holes (500) meter par 5 4th and to follow it up and 198 mtr par 3 the 12th is also a very picture perfect and challenging hole *get above thew hole on the green and putt on what feels like concrete* always a charm and will come back at anytime, nice people and staff

The course has improved a lot since 2002. The new dam and watering systems has allowed grass to grow on once dirt fairways. The greens are as good as anywhere and the bunkers are always well kept. A great public course and priced well to play. There are many friendly staff and great facilities such as a BBQ area and a well maintained driving range for practice.

Though the fairways are a bit dry now due to the no rain period (other courses have suffered as well), it is still a great public course to play with no pressure.

Now renamed Georges River GC

Played here again 7/2/06 and they are now charging $20 for weekdays and $25 for weekends for 18 holes and $35 for a cart. Surprised to find the fairways in worse condition than before. Still good facilities but now after playing at nearby New Brighton and Bankstown, the value here is not as good.

26. q-tip | Rated | 02 Dec 2005 | Add A Review

Measuring 5573 metre Par 70 the newly renamed Georges River GC (formerly Riverwood GC) is more than one expects. With 4 Par 5s ranging from 420-495 metres, 8 Par 4s ranging from 275-390 metres, and 6 Par 3s ranging from 140-195 metres it has a good mix for all golfers.

But the tree-lined fairways (on both sides!) have thinly-covered soils in areas and some par 4s have no bunkers guarding the greens. Greens are flat and lack speed & slopes, but are well maintained. Can become noisy with Bankstown Airport adjacent and around the 8th tee the traffic noise from Henry Lawson Drive can become distracting.

Development is coming along near the clubhouse (probably an extension) and the 155-metre Par 3 12th hole is to be extended (by say 30 metres) to an enlarged dam surrounding the green. This will easily become its signature hole and one difficult to birdie let alone par! All in all, a good course that can be better with its fairways.

Played here 1/12/05 (Thursday) and paid $15 green fees for 18 holes (weekday rates) and a cart for $30. On weekends it costs $22 for 18 holes. The cheapest course Iíve played on that I would come back to play again. Very good facilities for its cheap green fees: new clubhouse, driving nets, 250 metre driving range, large practice green and a separate practice green that allows chipping.

27. pinseeker | Rated | 01 Dec 2005 | Add A Review

This course is below average out of the many courses I have played on in the Sydney region. Some fairways have dry patches that can make play undesirable at times and the greens could have a little more maintenance. On the contrary, the course is pretty well laid out with some holes providing a descent challenge for any sort of golfer. The par 3's are of a very good length bringing the mid to low irons into play off the tee.

Overall, the course isn't too hard with few hazards to avoid. But I guess you can't expect too much for a $15 round of golf on a weekday.

I paly about once a month at Riverwood and each time i do you can notice the improvements. I think that if it keeps going the way it has over the past months the course will develop into a course of high standard golf

29. mher5371 | Rated | 10 Mar 2005 | Add A Review

A welcome surprise to see sprinklers and more grass in general on the course. Once known as the concrete course where a par 4 is totally drivable because of the said fairways. Now a fair lie and favourable conditions for the drive down the middle can be had.Having said that.It is the cheapest course and driving range to boot in the area. Give it a go. It seems to get better with age.

30. wayzical | Rated | 14 Jun 2004 | Add A Review

Aesthically, not the best looking course, and a bit dry at times, but the length is good considering most public courses are par 64-69.. Greens are well kept, fairways are a tad dry and dusty, but it's my local and it has a driving range to boot! Interesting holes that includes a 200mtr par 3 5th, long 389mtr par 4 1st with a small green, and a tight 160mtr par3 7th with an interesting/seperated tee box... Would recommend coming here if your sick of hitting 9-wedge 2nd shots at most public courses in the area. Friendly staff as well :-)

Flat, public course positioned next to Bankstown airport. Never in very good condition, but is generally cheap to play. So if you're strapped for cash, this may be the place.
