Rossdale Golf Club

Melbourne, VIC | User Rating: Rate-3 (3.5) | Add A Review

Rossdale Golf Club is a picturesque bayside course weaving through corridors of pines, eucalyptus and coastal banksias. A lush kikuyu course in the tradition of famous Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles where magnificent poa putting greens blend smoothly into the surrounding landscape.

The layout is quite challenging for all levels of golfers with numerous bunkers and water hazards framing a collection of distinctive holes. A real design feature is the variety of distances on the par threes which puts a premium on iron play throughout the entire bag. The approach to the seventh illustrates the strategic element with approach shots needing to avoid a lake short and right of the three-tiered green.

last visit June 2007 & was pleasantly suprised by all the changes especially to the new clubhouse…absolutley fantastic.
The course , i believe was inundated earlier in the year by floods and after seeing photos of the devastation, it is remarkable at how good the course is at present. The changes to many of the holes by way of mounding, the introduction of the "burns" and the shaping of the fairways with tough kikyu rough has made this a very challenging par 72. Congratulations to all associated with the changes…i will definetly be back & maybe as a member.

Played here a few weeks ago and was extremely disapointed. Had booked a social group in and decided to have a look at the course before hand. I am glad I did. The course was an absolute disgrace. Some fairways were underwater, bunkers in shocking condition and yet they still had the nerve to charge us $50 to play. Even if the course was dry, the layout is very uninspiring with many straight holes with no bunkers and very little imagination in the design. It did have a few short par 4s with some interesting designs but it would fit in better with your $25 public courses rather than your private courses charging $50 a round. I’m glad I tried it as I headed to the office and cancelled our social group booking.

We played Rossdale yesterday – Sunday 19th June 2011

Rossdale Golf Course is an absolute quagmire, run unprofessionally with members who are self-righteous and unfriendly.

We purchased Vouchers to play there which included 2 rounds, 1 cart and a "light lunch". We had 2 vouchers which should have meant 2 carts. Upon arrival we were told there was only 1 cart available. The kid at the proshop had no idea what to do only asking who we booked through… what that had to do with anything at this point I have no idea… I guess he wanted to blame someone for the mistake. We were finally given a 2nd cart which was a 4-seater, 0-bag cart. The proshop kid tied the 2 bags on to the cart with an occy-strap!

After missing our tee-time because of this mess of waiting for the second cart, we ended up teeing off 45 minutes late. We drove around to the 1st tee to be told nastily by a member that we were supposed to be going off the 10th. Yep… thanks for telling us proshop.

Finally teeing off and underway we soon discover the course is in absolute disarray. There were large GUR’s in several places on just about every hole and there was no signage directing where the next tee was – particularly in between the 11th and 12th where half of the 12th was under repair.

If Rossdale got on the voucher bandwagon in an attempt to entice new members then they have wasted their time. I would not recommend this course to anyone.

The fairways are in general well kept. Definitely better than those public courses. Staff are friendly. Good restaurent facility. Price is reasonable.

Beautiful course that has been well maintained and looked after with care. Not overly challenging with less bunkers and hazards than some courses but the greens are fast and can be very challenging depending on the pin placements. Has a wonderful feel to the place…highly recommended.

nice, relaxing course to play. pretty flat and not as long as other private tracks in the area. fast greens, thick rough and a nice layout give it enough challange to give it respect. has been some changes in the last few years which hav been good, favourtie holes to play are the 3rd, 7th, 9th, 12th and 17th holes.

A magnificent layout with greens that would be rated in the top 10 in Australia, not for size but in condition and trueness. The holes have been made harder by way of mounding and very penal rough. All holes are challenging with exception of the 8th hole…it is a nothing hole. A very challenging par 72. The Captain should be highly commended in what has transformed over the past 3 years. I couldn’t recognise the course from previous visits and this is all due to the committee. They now have an abundance of water storages now and will be an envy of other courses.

Rossdale is a nice enough course to play without any great golf hole's.It is a short course for a private track in melb, unfortunately the greens are inconsistent, and don't reward good approach shot's with a true line.

The greens are poa and it's worth noting yarra yarra has poa greens and are among the very best in melb yet rossdale's fall well below par.

There is a lack of undulation and fairway bunkers, the kikuyu fairways usually have a good cover of grass although they should consider changing to santa anna, these things cost money but it would improve the course.Hole's can be quite repetitive the only highlight's are:7,9,17.

Rossdale has to be the friendliest, easygoing, private course I've played to date. The course is quite good too, quality fairways, fast greens and the floral displays are great.

Some holes even feel resort-like in their isolation, whereas others seem to lack delineation and you get that "back-and-forth" feeling. And I have to agree that the par 4 8th with the dog-leg onto an uninspiring green is a bit out of character for the rest of the course.

There are 4 par 3's which require different irons spread around the course. The first 3 are quite spectacular, the 3rd hole over water, the 9th hole requiring length off the tee, safe fairway all the way to the green but nastiness on either side to catch hooks and slices, the 11th over an array of bunkering...the 16th (I think) is tucked in a stand of pine trees almost in a case of "whoops, we need an extra hole" and you find yourself backtracking to the 17th along the far end of the practice fairway wondering what all these balls are doing on the ground (you then realise and run for it).

All in all, a beautiful course, great people and a challenging game. I'll be in the market for a club membership in a year or so, and this one is definitely on my short list.

Course has a variety of holes that test both your accuracy and your distance. From a monster 420m par 4 that plays as a five into the wind to numerous short par fours that are reacable with a long-short iron combination. The greens are exceptionally interesting and the placement of pins can vary the experiance greatly. Only drawback is there are a few weak holes (such as the woeful 8th) that let the other great holes down. Overall a interesting and pleasant course.

A very picturesque layout weaving through corridors of pines and coastal banksias. A Kikuyu course in the tradition of the famous Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles where putting greens blend smoothly into the surrounds. A distinctive design feature is the variety of distances on the par threes which tests out the iron play throughout the entire bag. The club boasts a very friendly atmosphere with a new outdoor entertaining area overlooking the course that twice staged the Australian PGA Championship in the early 60s.
