Royal Park Public Golf Course

Melbourne, VIC | User Rating: Rate-2 (2.5) | Add A Review

Situated in picturesque Royal Park, an attractive challenging course only 3kms from the city. This course has been the nursery for many golfers who went on to a career as professional golfers, including Peter Thomson (club champion at the age of 16, in 1945) who won the British Open 5 times, Gus Jackson and Mick Ryan. The club started in 1903 and celebrated it’s centenary in 2003.

Royal Park is a fairly short and flat 9 hole course. Beginners should look here as I would rate this course as friendly (never easy!), I suspect more accomplished players would be able to score low due to the yardages on the holes here. No problems with losing balls here, I always walk out with more balls that I started with.

Course is kept in fairly good nick, teebox turf can be stiff at times. A heads up for first timers – the second hole is a 5 minute walk across the train tracks. Possibly one of the few places in the world where you could play golf with the roar of lions and elephants to be heard coming for the zoo.

Have played here a couple of times after work in the past week. Really enjoy the course. Its a fast round and really helps to get some confidence in the game. Also in fantastic condition at the moment.

I wouldn’t say it is anywhere near challenging as i putted for birdie on six or seven of the holes after a fair while not playing, but still great fun.

Played RP for the first time last Sat. Course seemed to be in fantastic condition, fairways, greens and tee’s were all beautiful. RP is a pretty straight forward course, starting off with a nice little par 3 to give you some confidence. Even with the howling wind I was putting for either birdie or par on most holes. $15 for 9 holes, I’ll definitely come back for another round. Definitely recommend it if you’re looking for a fun and not too challenging game.

PROS

  • Fairways
  • Tees
  • Greens
  • Nice and quiet for the city

Cons

  • 9 holes
  • Signage after for the 2nd hole - weren't too sure where to go.

Played here on Saturday. Had been raining solid for a few days so course was very wet which meant ball tended to plug and cups were full of water. Upside was no one else on the course so got around in 1.5 hrs. Pretty basic course – slow greens + some short holes including the 3rd which is a par 4 that I can reach with a 5 wood. Having said that Royal Park is still fun to play – good enough for Peter Thomson to learn the game so who am I to say it’s too easy?

PROS

  • Hearing lions roar from the nearby melbourne zoo
  • Always a chance to put for an eagle on a par 4

Played here the other week after work. Once again the course was in good nick. Not what I would call a chaellenge but a good cob web cleaner for your swing and touch or a great course to begin your love affair with this great game. As mentioned in previous reviews the train & tram lines do make this course unique. The back 4 holes are the better of the nine with the par 3 6th being my favourite. A short little 9 iron, but whatever you do do not go left or your ball might end up catching a tram into the city.
However I must disagree with previous comments on the pro shop staff. I have found them to be rude and arrogent, the only really downside to the game. It was like I was interrupting their life by wanting to play.

Just had a quick nine today. Played there once before during the summer and like most other courses it has turned from yellow to a nice deep green thanks to a bit more rainfall. At the moment, they’re doing renovations on the club house but the staff were very friendly. On the course there does seem to be a bit of a drainage issue as my shoes sunk into the waterlogged grass.
It was also nice and quiet (admittedly, on a weekday) but it was a bit sad to see the golf cart tire marks clearly going passed the greens/boundaries. Of course you also do need to compete with the Upfield train line, but it’s a minor inconvenience. I did, however, think that a wayward shot could very easily hit a tram or a walker by.

PROS

  • Nice and green at the moment.
  • Friendly staff

Cons

  • Some fairways waterlogged
  • Pedestrians walking across the fairway

I don’t know what you’re smoking sido/M-Hee or whatever your name is. Royal Park is a very average course. I would say it is decent value for 9 holes and won’t argue that it is good for an after work hit.

I would like to comment on a bad experience I have had with player etiquette on that course. The pair playing in front of me were throwing the flag’s around which dug up the greens which has not helped the upkeep of the course. I’ve played there a few times and this has been an isolated experience. I guess there are some beginners out there who have a lack of respect for golfing etiquette and these hooligans should be banned.

You hate to admit but people continue to have a soft spot for Royal Park as it proves to be one of the most amazing 9 hole courses in Melbourne. It provides the perfect opportunity for an after-work swing, or an ad hoc round of golf after a big night of drinking and no one had yet bothered to organise 18 holes of golf.

In winter, the quality of fairways and greens will be an incredibly pleasant surprise, however the course will struggle a bit in the summer as it does not get sufficient watering.

The signature holes on this course are:
*Par four 3rd – a driveable hole if you take the direct line over the trees.
*Par four 9th – lay it up between the two big trees on the left for a 60-70m pitch, or a big 250-270m drive over the hidden fairway bunkers will drop you at the foot of the elevated greens.

Contrary to some people’s belief, the quality of this course is far better than Freeway’s.

Royal Park is my local so I play there a fair bit. The fairways and greens are in the best nick I have ever seen them in. For $13 a round of 9 this place is a bargain. Sure, it’s not the most challenging course, not many bunkers, no water hazards but the are some kooky things you don’t get at many golf courses like the trams and the ’ding ding dings’ of the train line nearby.

nice and cheep and in good nick for a ghetto course. it is however very short and not very challenging. greens are pretty inconsistent but free of weeds and well maintained.

This course has gone down hill in a big way. It was never great but it was never the pile of rubbish that it is today. The greens are so slow that you may as well leave the putter in the bag. The guy in the pro shop is next to useless and refuses to keep the course free of idiots drinking their way around. Don’t bother coming here.

Beginner’s course only. Do not be fooled by the marketing or the location. This is a VERY short, very poorly maintained course for beginners only.

Royal Park is my home course as I live very close by so I see it through all seasons of the year. I have to say that the course is really struggling at the moment but I guess what course is’nt? It’s fairly a fairly simple lay out but extremely effective if you are looking for a quick round (9-holes)which takes around and hour and half on most days as long as you don’t go on a Wednesday morning when the vet’s are playing. One tip for this course is too play with a 3 piece ball no matter what handicap you are as the greens are fairly hard and you will need everything in your power to stop on the green, especially on the stupid fast 4th hole par 3.

No matter what skill level you are Royal Park does throw up some challenges, most of them are external noises that will mess with your concentration, such as Trains, Train Signals, Trams, Cars and a Hospital which dont make this the quitest course going around. Winter & Autumn is definately the best time to hit this course as the grass is greener and the treescapes are stunning.

The pro shop is ok but don’t expect too much high end gear, also, the pro and the old guy are nice but the irish fellow needs a bit of an attitude adjustment.

All in all royal park is a great course with plenty for everybody.

short and simple 9 hole course located next to the melbourne zoo. good for beginners or practise for accomplished golfers its in good condition after some early summer rain. has trains and trams that both run through the course which is something different but it adds the to atmosphere of the course.

I have been playing this course regularly for the past few months. It’s generally in pretty good condition and while the layout is basic it does offer a few challenging holes for the beginner. If you close to the city and are looking for a quick hit out then this is the perfect course. Most of the time you can get through 9 holes in about an hour and a half during the week

PROS

  • Fast
  • good condition
  • cheap

Cons

  • a little straight

As a new fan of the game, I am pleased to advice that I only lost 1 golf ball which I believe is somewhere on the train line near the 2nd hole. Also very nice to play 9 hols just before work. Ideal if you are in or around the city!

Royal Park is a very easy golf course set up to keep the field moving and providing the beginner with a good place to start. Accomplished golfers will find the course a little mundane and boring. The course is generally in good condition for the amount of traffic and its location couldn’t be better. So if you want a quick hit after work look here, if you want a true test of golf go elsewhere.

For the benefit of other beginners out there the Royal Park course is a reasonably forgiving one to play on.

Fairways and greens are pretty flat and there aren't many places where you can lose a ball in long grass etc. Well unless you hit it onto the train line on the 2nd hole like my workmate did.

The course was only reasonably well kept the times I've played it over the past few months bit it was bit dry and depressing to the eye though.
