What a waste of prime golfing real estate.continuously busy never cheap(no twilight) deals and a pro shop full of employees who believe they work across the road at royal melb.
The bunkering on the back nine is very good and there are some holes where an errant tee shot means lost ball into tee trees etc.Actually the back nine is quite good unfortunately so as some staff let people start on the back nine in the evening meaning if you start around lunch you can hit a jam.

Played Sandy for the 1st time since being run by Royal Melbourne. Showing some improvement in all areas that was long overdue. Reasonable layout for local public course. Back 9 more interesting than front. Will be interesting to see how it holds up once it gets to summer. Even had someone make sure everyone was keeping up which was a nice change

Very very disappointed with this course. Played Ringwood a couple of days earlier for half the money for a much better course.

I thought I’d go back and see what the course is like after staying away so long. The course really has benefited from our wet autumn and winter. Fairways are lush and green which is quite a change from the times i have played here in summer. Greens were in reasonable condition considering the traffic they have at this place. Bunkers were a lottery with amount of sand.
Everything else still applies from previous reviews. Front 9 layout – boring and average, back 9 interesting and challenging. Play was slow as is the norm, the earlier you can tee off the better.
Not sure how RM taking over management will help. Unless they find a permanent source of water this place will suffer once the heat arrives.

Dry. Fairways were patchy. Front 9 was flat and boring. Back 9 had a great layout, but the condition of the fairways didn’t do it justice. I’ll go back and play it again in the wet months before I completely write it off

Fairways were extremely patchy, greens were large but damaged in spots, lack of good sand in some bunkers and play was very, very slow. Try to concentrate on your swing with hundreds of flies annoying you and landing on your face, this would best describe our round of golf on Saturday. I would suggest to look elsewhere for a game.

Played here yesterday and i was pleasently disapointed with this course. Front 9 was easy and flat, with the exception of the greens which gave me a it of trouble due to them being rock hard and pretty quick. I found it hard to keep the ball on the greens on certain holes. The back 9 was intersting but like another review said, they let about 4 groups on in front of me which slowed the game down and made it far less enjoyable. The group in front of me was a father and 2 sons who could not hit a ball to save themselves but still found the time to give eachother lessons which banked up 4 or 5 groups behind me.
The people in the pro shop where nice but i have to say that i will never play here again. An absolute waste of $20(with golf course guide). STEER CLEAR

The drought has greatly effected this course, the groundstaff it seems have been advised to care for greens only.it is a shame considering the location in one of the great golf terrains of the world.this is a treed paddock with greens.
there has been no effort in the last ten years to choose a grass more resistant to drought and traffic.the fairways are non existent .we decided to play preferred lies on fairways though when the game got close we were fighting about where the fairways finished,it is truly indistinguishable.they consist of a combination of dirt, sand and with hope ,weeds.
i feel cheated when i play here ,i don’t know how they can call them green fees in the first place.also this course has a terrible habit of letting groups begin on the tenth hole, terrible for those who cannot play 9 holes.those that pay for 18 are afforded no regard. The back nine is better, though it sucks finishing nine seeing the tenth more crowded than the first.
It has a good kiosk and is home to a House of Golf, they no how to get cash out of you.The House of golf have done well here, clubs seem more important than the course.
the staff are hard to fathom as they act if they have a course of far greater superiority, maybe it is just the area.it may be just across the road from Royal Melbourne but this course is its slum.driving down cheltenham road it looks ok,a tinge of green at least.dont be fooled ,this course should be renamed saharaingham.
do not play here out of curiosity, play here out of necessity .it is the only thing that will bring you back. Also Liked

Pray for rain! A public course that could rate very well, if only things weren’t so dry. Fairways unfortunately are extremely dry – probably the worst i have ever seen. Greens are generally large and testing.

Stay away from this course, for the time being, unless you are absolutely desparate for a game of golf.
Fairways are absolutely shocking – front 9 were very patchy (from excessive unrepaired divots) and dry (the yellow fairways made it difficult to spot the ball).
On the positive side, the greens were true and really tested the touch of one’s short game.
For the moment, you would be much better off playing at courses currently in better condition by order of preference: Beaconhills, Yarra Bend, Kingston Links, Glen Waverly

I’ve avoided playing this course so far due to the reviews saying how dry it is. However I decided to give it a go and was pleasantly surprised. The course has definitely benefited from the rain in recent months with the fairways in good condition and the greens in great nick. Tees are a mixed bag and the markers moved more to even out the wear and tear.
After speaking to people who play it often, they say it will stay like this until Dec/Jan when it starts to dry out again. So take the time to play it now while it is looking it’s best.
The front 9 are easy, flat with wide fairways. The back 9 are a different story with challenging layouts, strategic bunkering and greens with plenty of undulations.
The only gripe which is rife across public courses is the slow play. When will courses learn that spacing out the groups a tiny bit more will make the experience more enjoyable and earn repeat business. Otherwise start employing a course marshall to move things along. Don’t expect to get around in under 5 hours.

The recent rain has bought the course back from the brink, its still dry but the fairways are looking better than they have in the past.
The course is very busy and this shows in the general wear and tear of the grounds, with divots and pitch marks being a constant factor of play.
However the course is great fun to play with the early holes letting you warm up gently before the tricky ones kick in later in the course
PROS
- great location and a very pretty surround make this a great walk chasing a ball
Cons
- over officious marshalls can cause your friendly match to take on an unhappy flavour

Played this today for the first time. Clearly, Sandringham is blessed with location, location, location. Its a sand-belt course, next to one of the greatest courses in the world, Royal Melbourne – which is right across the road. Sadly, this course is playing far from its potential. The fairways are bone dry. Tees are in a bad way – too much sand, too many divots. And the bunkers are simply a waste of time. Overall – the course is quite pretty – lots of open space, and not to challenging. But really – its quite boring and does not entice you to race back anytime soon. A bit of water, and a bit of TLC, and this could easily be one of the best public tracks in Melbourne.
PROS
- Location
- Sand Belt course
Cons
- Its way too dry
- Conditioning appears poor
- Facilities need some updating

Sandy used to be my favourite, however having played their nearly every week for 3 years enough was enough and we’ve moved on. Certainly the drought has done dear old Sandy no favours, however there seems to be some very bad management in play as well. Rather than move the tees forward and back, time after time they were in the same position. As a result it’s now next to impossible to find a spot where you aren’t standing in a hole. The greens with more grass than Cheech and Chong, the bunkers have less sand than an English beach and yet prices continue to be increased. No surprise really that the number of cars in the carpark has been steadily decreasing in the last few years.

I have been a regular at Sansy for many years. In that time the course has gone from what I would say as being one of the best public courses in Melbourne, but in the last year or so it has been let go (blaming the drought) but the tees and green are less than satisfactory. I hope that it is brought to its former glory.

If you are a Melbourne sandbelt virgin this is the perfect location for your deflowerment.
A true sandbelt course that gives the beginner at least 4 holes to settle down before being thrown into the thick of things,
Indeed the first nine holes are pretty forgiving with wide fairways and manageable rough. It is only when you tee off 10 that you begin to experience what Melbourne sandbelt can deal to you. Inpenetrable manuka and scrub borders on one or both sides of the next five holes. If your ball strays here then forget it.. just play a provisional and get on with the game. Unfortunately too many souls spend ages trying to find their ball and the result is a lot of waiting around between holes despite the ever-attentive and zealous marshalls on their buggies. The bunkers are also placed to perfectly tempt and punish those looking for a birdie. If the wind is blowing take note - yardages are a waste of time here - you may have to plus or minus two clubs depending on the wind.
Overall - play safe and this is a pushover course - try for glory and you will instead be challenged, rewarded or punished as your shot befits. My tip - keep the ball low. A very good course for 15-25 handicap golfers and great value for money. No wonder the Japanese have a club here.
As always., tee off before 8 or after 11 to beat the rush... or expect a 5 hour round.

Set across the road from Royal Mebourne in the city's famous sandbelt district, Sandringham Golf Course is one of the best public access courses in metropolitan Melbourne.
While the front nine lacks a little bit of character, the course comes into it's own in the back half. Holes 12-18 are a pretty good test for the 10-20 handicapper, however are far from unplayable for the beginner. My favourites are the tough 193metre par3 13th, the reachable in two 453metre par5 14th, and the well protected 149metre par3 15th. These holes would not be out of place on the course of Sandringham's next door neighbour, and are great fun to play. If you need a par on the narrow 357metre par 4 18th to break 90, good luck.
Although at least one bunker is in play on every hole, the course is not overly difficult. My feeling is that Sandringham could be markedly improved by adding an additional bunker or two to a dozen or so holes. Yet it is still a challenging enough place to play and is agreeable to golfers of all standards, giving even the beginner a chance to play on Melbourne's famous sendbelt.
Sandringham is a well maintained course. It holds up exceptionally well in the wet months, and may even be a little dry if there hasn't been much rain around of late. At around $23 it is excellent value for money on one of Melbourne's very best public access courses.

Played twilight golf here yesterday and was pretty happy with the course condition. It was nice to revisit Hole 1 and 9 which were the practice range for the Presidents cup 2011.
