Sandy Gallop is an interesting and undulating natural bushland layout. The course itself has recently undergone some major improvements making it now more user friendly and enjoyable to play. The 5400m, par 70 course is traversed by Deebing Creek and offers a good test of golfing skill.

Records indicate Sandy Gallop was the scene of Greg Norman’s first professional victory – the 1976 Coal City Pro-am. The honour board for this event also includes such names as Peter & Jeff Senior and Ian Baker-Finch.

The club is renowned for it’s friendly atmosphere hence being commonly known as “The Friendly Club”. Social players and clubs are welcome weekdays and Sundays at very affordable prices.

The club has licensed bars, full catering facilities and a fully stocked Pro Shop run by PGA Professional Wayne Pickering. Hire equipment is also available.

I have ventured out to the Gallop a few times for both social and comp events. I have found mostly the staff are friendly and the members as well. However bluesteal who is a member out there was denied after requesting a free crunchie after producing a valid wrapper for a free one. The greens are rock hard and almost impossible to fizz the ball. The fairways are hard as well. With alot of rain the course is alot more rewarding. I find it hard to believe iseek have rated the course 3 star on par with the likes of Victoria park and even more so half a star better than Karana Downs. The rating structure in this case needs to be reviewed. All in all good value at $20 a week.

Have only recently joined this course for only $30 per month.
it’s very challenging for the normal golfer and i think it keeps every player honest. All the staff are friendly and I now play the Saturday Comp and the starter knows everybody by thier first name and it’s just a good friendly atmosphere.

full membership is $30 a month that right $30 a month or mid week at $20 a month 8 new holes opened last month and its on flat land the course is still 18 holes par 70. i think the new course is much better the hardest hole is the new 4 th 390 m par 4 the best part of the club are the members and staff, on the new golf holes golf management is needed dont just blast away, think first and you will be rewarded leave your ego at home.

How much is it to join at Sandy Gallop as a member?

5. brettob | Rated | 19 Sep 2009 | Add A Review

Joined here a couple of weeks ago having played here a few times previously, course has a challenging layout especially on the front nine. Only complaint which shows up more so on holes 3, 7 and 8 is the vicous slope on the fairways which have a tendency of making a good shot bad and vice versa. The back 9 is beautifully crafted and hole 11 is favourite, all in all a nice course, highly recomended

6. Tom1978 | Rated | 04 Jan 2009 | Add A Review

Not a bad layout at all, good for beginners with a couple of challenging holes. Little bit frustrated on the shorter par 4s (270-320m) driver or 3 iron layup..hmmmmm. Only real issue i had was the hardness of the greens, rock solid an no one in my group could stop an approach shot into the greens. Still for the price of membership i’m seriously considering it!

Please don’t rate this course after only one game,be fair,3/4 games then give your verdict. Have been a member here for the past 3 months, does it need some upgrading? show me a golf course that doesn’t,the main point is that there is upgrading going on and it is a ongoing upgrade, therefore the course will only get better,be patient. It has to be the cheapest golf around,I pay $25 per month for access to the course 7 days per week.now where else would you get that? So keep hitting them there balls straight down the middle and putt with confidence

I play at Sandy every week. $20 a month for full membership. Try finding any golf course that can match it. The course itself is bad at all. I mean if your a serious golfer it offers great challenges due to the undulating surfaces. There are a lot of improvements needed such as consistent greens that aren’t as hard as cement and more grass and less rocks on the fairways. But for money and the fact they are constantly upgrading on a weekly basis. Plus the staff there are great with a friendly smile every time you go to sign in. Its the best priced course I have every been to. Do yourself a favor. Join up and experience what they have to offer.

i am a new member to this club and what makes it so great are the members its a friendly club with a great vibe, this club is under new ownership and every weeks there is a new improvement this week they are installing a full automatic irrigation system i give the course 3 stars but the members and the new owners 5 stars so a rating of 4.

Really not sure about this one, i find that too much at this course relies on luck. The course has certainly improved since the new greens have been opened up but the greens arent the problem. The dodgy, unpredictable spin and bounce of the ball at this course makes it impossible to shoot a good score. The layout of the course even lends itslef toward a good score with all of the par 4’s on the back nine being reachable from the tee, but as i said, too much relies on luck at this course.

Sandy is the first course where I’ve been a member, having played only for a year in Perth and recently moving to Ipswich.

Sandy Gallop is unlike any course I’ve played… if you’re a long hitter, you’ll have fun on about 6 holes. It’s a course that insists on accuracy and thoughtful shot-making, with many sloping fairways. A missed tee shot will put you in some deep gullies – below the pin but often with a better angle to the flag.

The new owner is doing wonders here, and in the 6 months I’ve played the course, it has improved dramatically and only getting better. And you can’t beat the membership fees at $20 a month.

It’s a fun, tiring, challenging course, and I enjoy playing it far more than most of the better public or resort-style courses.

I Used to be a member back in the early 80’s and the course was good. Now I have become a member again and I’m very happy, the course is good and only getting better. I have only been a member for 3 months now and it is quite noticable on how much improvement has taken place, it looks like the new owners are trying very hard, the greens are picking up, the fairways are good, the new raised tee on the 3rd is great and the staff are very friendly. Give the club a go it’s on the up and no I’m not on the board.

Played my first round at the "new" Sandy Gallop today and despite the hype about new greens I was disappointed. The greens are postage mostly stamp sized, very hard (like concrete) and some are quite poorly grassed.

To be fair, most of the fairways were in reasonable shape, and some challenging holes – but the greens let the course down in my view.

I might play there again – because it’s very cheap – but I was a bit disappointed. I can only hope the greens improve a lot as they play in – and that somehow they enlarge some of them. The 18th in particular should be a signature hole for Sandy Gallop, but the green completely lets down the rest of the hole.

to jack i made a phone call to the owner 20 dollars a month membership will be offered to any one wanting to join the club and the offer will still be available in june and july. The train line is of little concern and he has been informed is unlikley to affect his 30 years lease but to ensure The long life of the course he is looking at purchasing more land around the course, it seems great improvments are on the way with automatic fairway irrigation planned to be installed later this year, i am enjoying the course and play often in the open wed comp give the guy a go jack and help spread the good he is doing, more members more social players the better our club will be .

Sorry MORAKI but its not sour grapes. If you read my review you will see it was written in November 2006 and i was stating the well known obvious at the time.

Having said that the same can not be said now.The course has improved 100% since then. The greens are coming along well and the fairways are mown regularly.

Not sure on the shortening of the course though. The 15th is now a woefully short par 4 by modern day standards. The 3rd is also going to be shorter and the new par 3 is very short.

Still no one twists my arm to play there and i am enjoying it more now that the conditions are improving. Will be interesting to see if the long suffering full paying members will get a shot at the $20 per month offer when our membership runs out in July.

Perhaps 10 YEARS A MEMBER can enlighten us?While your at it 10 YEARS whats the latest on the proposed train line the council wants to run through the course?

I have just played the course, and I found that the new owner has carried out many improvements that have made playing the course much more player friendly. The fairways are looking and playing really well, the new greens are also playing well considering they have only been in play about 2 weeks.

I understand that there are more changes to be made which will ensure the player has an enjoyable day, which is what it is supposed to be about

The review by jackwashere seems like a case of sour grapes to me. Whatever happened to giving a person a fair go.

Let the new team work their changes before we set out to judge.

Played at this course on the weekend not expecting much after all the bad publicity. Have to say the the new owners and greenkeepers are doing a magnificent job getting this club and course back to prestine condition. There is plenty of irrigation on all the fairways and the new greens that have just been opened are coming along well. The rain hitting this course will have it in tip top condition with weeks. Congratulations to all concerned for getting this club back on the road to its former glory.

Dont believe all the previous reviews.I suspect they were written by commitee members trying to talk the place up after the mass excodus of members back in July.I have been a member for 10 years and never seen things as bad as they are now.18 temporary greens because the green keeper sprayed the wrong chemical mix and killed them all.Fees went up.Owner getting up members on course for slow play which wasnt the members fault.Owner has now sold out.Club pro has left.Parts of course sold off and new tees and a short 220mt par 4 coming soon, also a new par 3.Council has plans for a train line to run through the course. All in all a terrible state of affairs and the course is suffering badly.

Well it would seem that those reviewers who are not familiar with the term "course management" did not enjoy their game. It would also seem that they are comparing this course to the many resort courses around quensland rather than take it for what it is. I have been a memeber at Sandy Gallop for four years now and it is true that due to the black soil that much of the course is built on it does suffer during times of extreme dry. However this course, when well watered is as good as any in the area, Ipswich included. It povides a challenge for all levels of golfer and requires a good deal of course management to get round with a reasonable score. It is a shame that a few golfers, who have come to the course expecting to have an easy round, have decided to dengrate this friendly club because they were beaten by the golf course. Well maybe they should take up lawn bowls if they can't stand a challenge. As for the third. Yes it is a blind tee shot...but not the only one in Australia. But if look at the course map on your card which shows you the shape of the hole, then you wait for the bell and hit your tee shot on the fairway then there is no danger to anyone. Try it with an open mind and you just may enjoy your round and the friendly facilities at the 19th.

I have been a member of sandy gallop for over 13 yeras and to see a review as bad as hogiboys makes me sick.

To see someone give a bad review of a course because he cant hit a ball below his feet is wrong.

He never did say what his score was ?

Or what he plays off ?

There are no bad courses just bad players.

This course well test your game and that is what the game is about right ?

I wouldn't call this a goat track because that is unfair to a goat track. This place is a joke.

Use to be called Ipswich Country Club but reverted back to original name.

I wouldn't even take someone starting out to have a game here.

The place is not enjoyable and the third hole is a blind drive and dangerous to anyone on the 3rd fairway, 1st green and 2nd tee.

If you are in the area for a game head two minutes up the road to the Ipswich Golf Club. It's held the QLD Open for the past four years and is better hands down than Sandy Gallop.

Save your money and head elsewhere.

They don't hold the QLD Open at the "Ipswich Country" Golf Club (now known as Sandy Gallop Golf Club).

The QLD Open has been held at "Ipswich" Golf Club.

Sandy Gallop is 2 min from Ipswich cbd.

The course is a poorly funded track around the University of Queensland Ipswich campus. It features many short holes with large slopes protecting its vulnerability in length. What value it has in design is destoyed by its maintainence.

The first is a strong dogleg left around a hazard. It is a challenging opening tee shot which has inviting options for all levels of players. For the longer hitter a carry over the entire hazard is one of the most exhilarating tee shots in the Brisbane region, and can leave you with an approach shot with a wedge. The 18th, downhill par3, is probably the signature hole offering a challenging tee shot to a small green guarded by water hazard off the right side.

These however are the few thrills the course has to offer. Besides having a go at trying to get to some par4's under 300m with your tee shot the course doesn't have much to offer. It's condition is nothing other than a Goat Track. Bad lies will be found on every hole on the barren wastelands that are the fairways. The green are couch (that's right, couch!) providing many an interesting roll.

If you can overcome a terribly conditioned course then you may enjoy your round with some agressive golf shots.

I am shocked they frequently play the Queensland Open here! Boring course.

34. shortgames | Rated | 15 Mar 2005 | Add A Review

Even crappy golfers wouldn't play here twice.

A ridiculous 1st hole is followed by a downright dangerous 3rd.

Bouncy greens, hot dry fairways and 3,000 social players holding up the field made for the most unpleasant round of golf I've had in a while.

That said, if you can hit it long you'll eat this shambles up as the second shots will all be about 15 metres.

Stay home, don't be persuaded!

Sandy Gallop is a Dirt/Goat track. I played there 2 months ago and when you putt your ball it bounces on the green. And is there more than 1 groundskeeper if any? I wouldnt recomend this course to anyone. Its not worth it even $10

This course is also know as Ipswich Country Golf Course, locals call it Sandy Gallop... Same same. Already reviewed, see Ipswich Country Course info...Still the better of Ipswich's 2 main courses af far as I am concerned.

37. 1looby | Rated | 11 Jan 2005 | Add A Review

First of all, easy to find. Ample club house and course amenities. 18 holes during the week will cost $16, good value. The 1st hole is a dogleg left, with plenty of trees and water, the 18th is a 140yard par 3, plenty of water in front and to the right. Play straight or pay. Most of the holes in between offer differant challenges at different times, some with bunkers, some with water, others with large trees down the fairways. Most the greens are easy to moderate, however, some are extremely fast. Aesthetically, it is a pleasant course with plenty of birds and a variety of trees. Overall, I had a good day, not because I shot 5 under, but the people were friendly and most importantly, the course was enjoyable to play. I believe it is the better of Ipswich's 2 main courses, espicially for an average golfer.

38. calaisvr | Rated | 12 Sep 2004 | Add A Review

Basically this course is as challenging as most, not for the frustratingly placed bunkers or water hazards, but for the poorly mapped course details and roughly contoured fairways.

After playing sandy gallop a few times I am sure that these tricky parts would get up and go away as course knowledge would play a big part in the outcome of your score.

It does have a nice leisurely layout and is a nice course to drive. I did find however that in some parts of the course the dirt on the edge of the fairway was like playing out of a rough bunker ( I am used to playing on sand base courses though )

I must say that for $20 this course is value for money and if I was out that way again I would probably consider it!
