Fantastic layout for a voluntarily manicured course. The fairways are seasonal grasses and can be patchy during summer (this is why a preferred lie rule is used). The santa anna greens are well maintained, they are quite small but provide consistent response to chips and putts.

This is a great place for anyone of any ability and is a fantastic place to learn the game without fear of judgement or of striking nearby houses. The layout will provide a challenge to any golfer and the absence of bunkers is easily compensated for by Sapplings, Creeks and Dams.

The Strathalbyn GC has provided a fantastic course for it’s loyal members who enjoy both a ridiculously low annual membership ($200) and a rare social atmosphere that has been lost to many golf clubs.

For $10 dollars a day!!!!, you can’t go wrong.

PROS

  • The social atmosphere, and the many local volunteers who do it for the love of it

Cons

  • Creeks are deep, and sometimes it's better to cut your losses

How can you give this course 4 stars and give Ashbourne 2? At least Ashbourne’s fairways are more than glorified cow paddocks…

Easily the toughest 9 hole course in the country that I have played, and I have played many.

Picturesque views, looking over Lake Alexandrina and the Coorong area try and take your mind off the challenge ahead. But fail miserably.

Interesting use of garden gnomes as tee markers give this course a cheekiness found nowhere else I have seen.

Lack of amenities in the clubrooms fail to give this course a 5 star rating, yet on course amenities are sensational.

Club professional Roger Anderson has a special affinity with the course and his insight into playing the course was immensly valuable.

Definately worth a visit, but be prepared to lose a few balls and perhaps a little piece of your heart!
