Sussex Inlet measures 3207m Par 42 (11 holes) with three par 3s ranging from 115-177m, seven par 4s ranging from 285-375m and the 452m Par 5 2nd.

The course has medium-sized tree lined fairways with mostly kikuyu grass fairways. The 2nd, 8th and 17th have couch grass fairways. The teebeds have fairly well maintained winter ryegrass. The small-to-medium sized bent grass greens are flat with slow roll. There are 13 bunkers on the course with the 1st, 7th, 8th and 9th being entirely bunkerless.

1st-375m/10th-399m is one of the signature holes on the course. From the tee you require an accurate long iron as there is a creek crossing the fairway about 200-240m off the tee which slightly bends downhill the creek and to the left to a bunkerless green.

2nd-452m Par 5/11th-365m Par 4 with a narrow driving area from the 2nd tee mound to a fairway crest through the heavily tree-lined fairway with OOB on the left off the tee, with a fairway bunker right off the tee on the crest and another on the left about 150m out of the green which is also guarded by a bunker short right.
3rd-352m/12th-295m slight bend right with OOB trees on the left to a green guarded by 2 shortside bunkers.

4th/13th-285m straight hole which plays gently downhill with OOB trees on the left to a green with 2 bunkers 20m & 40m short left and right and bunker over the back.

5th-115m/14th-132m slightly uphill with 2 shortside bunkers

6th-342m/15th-343m is the other signature hole on the course. From the 6th tee you require a teeshot over the water hazard but not too far as the fairway bends to the left with OOB along the left and a fairway bunker 200m off the tee to a small bunkerless green.

7th-136m/16th-152m flat and small bunkerless green

8th-348m slight bend left with OOB trees on the left to another small bunkerless green.

9th-177m elevated tee with a downhill teeshot to another small bunkerless green.

The layout is a fairly reasonable 9-holer with 2 additional holes. To play 18 holes (5178m Par 68) you play holes 1-7 again from different tee mounds quite close to each other, then play the following holes which are parallel to the corresponding front nine holes:

17th-332m straight hole with a slight fairway slope to the left with a greenside bunker left

18th-293m slight bend right with a creek crossing the fairway 180m off the tee to another small green guarded by a bunker short right which is actually larger than the green itself!

Although always improving since the 2005 review, they still need to improve the course conditioning on the 11 holes here at the moment before they ever think of adding 7 extra holes as, there are 18-hole layouts nearby at Worrigee Links, Nowra and Sanctuary Point.

Sussex Inlet is a small town of nearly 4000 people about 20 minutes south of Nowra. Course access is 9km from the Princes Highway and about 1km from Sussex Inlet.

Not sure what price hike other reviewer is on about but I played here during the Christmas period on 27/12/11 with $18 green fees for 9 holes which is quite reasonable.

Not overly challenging for the serious golfer, but more suited for the holiday or social golfers.

A lot of work has been done on the course since i played it last. Not bad for a hit while you are down the south coast, but not worth going down especially to play. 11 green 18 tee setup, with some good holes. Fairways are improving. Greens are pretty good. Kangaroos everywhere, so great for tourists. Not much of a rough. Off the fairway is very hard dirt, but you’re not supposed to hit it there anyway. Enjoyable to play.

Wasn’t impressed with the green fee hike just for the Christmas period. For the course, the price was very exy. Cost more than some Sydney courses in better condition for 9 holes.

If you are headed to Sussex (outside of Xmas period) take your sticks.

PROS

  • Good Fairways
  • Receptive Greens
  • Wildlife and serenity

Cons

  • Xmas period green fees.
  • Not much rough.
  • Some greens have little quirks around holes.

Sussex Inlet is one of the worst golf course ive ever played. Its more like a carpark than a golf course. It has big bare patches in the fairway (about 10 metres long) rocks all over the place and hitting a 300m drive is very likely(even if you only hit the ball 200m). There are some good looking holes but what wrecks it is the condition.

I walked off the eighteenth hole(9 hole golf course) with a 79, scratches and sh*t all over my brand new taylor made clubs and an awful attitude, and if I had a chance to go to work or play golf at sussex, I would be bringing home a paycheck.
