Hunter Valley Golf & Country Club

Hunter Valley, NSW | User Rating: Rate-4 (4.0) | Add A Review

Once known as “Portofino Golf Course”, set amongst the vineyards of the lower Hunter Valley, this friendly course offers stunning views, beautiful wildlife and a relaxed atmosphere. This resort style course tests the experienced and rewards the novice. While at times challenging, it promises to be a truly remarkable round of golf.

The course closed in late 2003 for extensive renovations including the addition of a luxurious Crowne Plaza Hotel with conference facilities, 175 self-contained golf condominiums, fully equipped pro-shop, health and beauty centre and an alfresco bar and restaurant overlooking the breathtaking Brokenback Mountain Ranges. The new resort and course re-opened to the public in October 2006.

I chose to play at the Hunter Valley Golf Resort for a few reasons:

  • Hadn’t been there for a few years
  • Booked through Iseekgolf.com for $49 inc cart per person
  • I had some customers to entertain and wanted a course that was playable for different levels of golfer.

Whilst it doesn’t set the world on fire for hardness or length,we found it to be interesting, well presented, nice on the eye and rewarding for good shots.

The Staff were very professional and respectfull and i won’t hesitate to return with more customers for an enjoyable day on the greens.

been playing here since the course was opened as potifino years ago and love it, anybody who complains about the back nine shoulda played it then when you had to play around, over and through acres of grapevines which might sound appealing but let me tell you it wasn’t, the course is much better now and if you are complaing about the lack of trees go and have a look at st. andrews

Played following a week of torrential rain. A big plus was a call that we received from the golf club a day before we played advising that buggies would not be available due to the soft ground – nice customer service.

The course was in very good condition considering the amount of recent rain. Especially the tees and greens which were bone dry. The greens still had a good pace to them.

The course layout sees the front nine move around the Crowne Plaza complex. It is a little short and many of the par 4s are drive and wedge distances. The back nine is a little more open and certainly longer in length. It is the more appealing of the nines, especially as you move away from the hotel complex and in to the country.

My main gripe with the course is the amount of water hazards. The designer was clearly one who has built resort style courses before. There is hardly a hole without water and most of it is unnecessary. Given the flat ground on which the course is built this actually makes for rather featureless and uninspiring views when you stand on some of the tees and fairways. Some extra bunkering and contouring would be a big help.

Overall not a bad course but I felt that with a little more attention to detail, and less reliance on water it could have been better.

We thoroughly enjoyed our round on the Hunter Valley Country Club on a beautiful autumn morning.

The course is fun to play and not too challenging. Some of the scenery was great once away from the hotel development.

Nice Golf course, very good value for money, can be played by High Handicapers. Greens very receptive, Only problem is Not much call for any club longer than a four iron.

Hunter Valley Golf & Country club is a good test of golf for all levels of player, greens were very receptive and fairways were great. I took a team from work with handicaps ranging form 5 to non handicapper (plays about 5 x games a year) and everyone enjoyed the day food and drinks were good, could not fault it.

Great course – very challenging with the water traps. Could do with a better course map as some hidden creeks and lakes caused a few lost balls. Really enjoyed it – a bit of a different challenge to the Vintage – less nasty sand traps but definitely more water, but no less enjoyable. First hole claimed a brand new ball – good luck in overcoming that mental challenge.

Not a bad course, challenging. Very poor condition, the greens looked like they hadnt been maintained in awhile and had plenty of divot holes. Have played at The Vintage and this course does not even compare.

I don’t know what SPISWIVOP and HEWREWIWR thought they were getting when they decided to play this course, but anyone who knows golf courses knows that compared to Cypress and the Vintage, it suffers a little. Accept it for what it is. It still had to be better than working. For the record, my wife and I both enjoyed it.

Flat and a bit average compared to Vintage and Cyprus

16. spiswivop | Rated | 23 Mar 2009 | Add A Review

The course is a bit of a non-event and I was very dissapointed. It is well below the standards of other courses in the area such as the Vintage and Cypres Lakes. The course is short and the fairway bunkers look like they were an afterthought. My partner and I were of the same view and we wont be bothered playing there again any time soon. For a memorable game you’re much better off paying the extra $ to play at one of the other courses near by.

Very playable resort style course. Rather flat but enough of a challenge off the blue markers. Course condition great although greens were a bit pock marked from players not repairing pitch marks adequately. Pro shop staff and green keepers all helpful. 2nd game here and will be back. Easy to organise through iseekgolf.

Played in the open comp on 3 Jan 2009. Excellent golf experience! Great value at $69 incl cart and lunch! Mostly wide open fairways encouraging for higher handicaps. Plenty of challenge from the back tees for the better players. Fairways are very well groomed. Stray from the fairway and the trees will impact your score. Greens are small and fast but receptive to approach shots due to recent rains. Some of greens could use a blower or vacuum due to the amount of twigs and leaves. Also fellow golfers should repair their ball marks. Sand traps have soft consistent sand. Water is in play on several holes. Wish I had a yardage book. Hit a great drive on number seven only to have it roll into the water that crossed the fairway. Also the short par 4 11th dog legs right and you can’t see the green. You need a medium iron to reach the bend. If you try to cut the corner, you might land your ball in the pond which I just missed that you can’t see from the tee.

The revamped Hunter Valley Golf and Country Club is a most interesting course, with plenty of challenge and good greens. It has a good diversity between short and long holes, and strategically located water (plenty of it). It does offer reward for good straight hitting off the tee. Must hit over water on a few holes. I have played there twice now and will be back. Very good value for game and cart through iseekgolf. Very nice resort “club house” for facilities and a drink afterwards.

Played at Hunter Valley G.C today and had a great round. Green running true, fairways in good nick and dams and creeks all full. Played like a good golf course well. Found some holes to be a little gimicky: 11th is only 240mts long but you must hit a right angles over 30 ft trees for any chance of a green hit, have to take a 6 iron off the tee!! Thats about the only complaint, most other holes rewarded good shots while punishing bad ones, rewards for big hitters!

I will visit again

Played Tuesday 14.10.2008 Overcast and occassional showers. Course ids a very enjoyable track. First 3 holes are easy start, then from holes 4 to 10 quite challenging for the the 14-20 matrker. Par 3’s make this course. Holes 11 to 14 fairly flat and unchallenging after the previous 6. Good solid finish, Hole 17 is a devilish par 3 don’t be long, left or right. Hole 18 recreation of St Andrews shared green can have you putting from huge distances if you mistake the flag of the 9th hole. Is improving month by month especially the greens. Of the 3 courses in the Hunter is probably the most enjoyable for a social days golf. Cypress Lakes for punishmnet if not at the top of your game, The Vintage for mental torment or here for a relaxation and you just go away with feeling of well it was a good game of golf and and I can play better. The weather probably didn’t help, but facilities and staff were most courteous and on-line booking and value of $47.00 for game and cart can’t be beaten.

Very enjoyable day out, highly reccommend the grapevine bar for food and beer.

Most holes on this course are relatively short and not terribly difficult, however the course is still designed for enjoyment and as such, satisfies its purpose as a fun, resort course.

PROS

  • Short rough
  • Easy to find wayward balls
  • Minimal blind tee shots
  • water

HVGC has a slow start, but fron the 4th to the 10th hole there are some great holes. Unfortunately the 11th to the 15th hole are a bit up and down in and a large field. The course has a good strong finish. The fairways where in great condition, but the greens not quite there yet, but will get better. I played off the blue tees which makes some of the tee shots a fantastic challenge. Overall worth a visit.

Had a good relaxing day of golf. The course is in good condition, though the greens vary from fast to slow due to the wind on the day and the resulting variation in green moisture.

The Course offers enough of a challenge for the social golfer to keep you interested, though with some extra development of the back nine holes it could provide a real challenge. I must admit, you need to play off the blue markers as the course feels a little short off the white.

In all this is a great resort golf course, offering the guest what they want, a good relaxing escape from the humdrum.

I played this course in early May. It was in great condition and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience – but then when you play well on the day that’s always the case. Because I was on my own I was invited to play the back nine first and join the field for the front nine. This was very thoughful on the part of the staff and it made for a better day because I had millionaire’s golf for nine holes and fitted into the field easily on the 2nd nine. I was told that the back nine was the harder nine because it was longer. Not true! The course overall is not long but it is not easy either. You have to think about club selection off the tee and play to a plan throughout. It’s not a course to grab the driver and step up to the tee! The fourth hole and sixth hole were the challenges. They are not difficult but very scary when there is not much in front except water. Second shot on the sixth requires a plan and unless you’re well placed to get the green play short as the next lot of water is very strategically placed to grab you. The 11th hole is a dogleg right and a hort hole of around 250m. Not difficult but tricky to judge the shot from the tee especially when you are not sure of where everything is. My suggestion is a mid iron off the tee and then go to the green. The clever fade with a metal or hybrid may finish in trouble. I will play here again. The local knowledge gained from the first visit will be valuable.

An excellent course and a lot of fun!

I don’t know why I expected less of this course; maybe because it looked shorter, or maybe because I figured the design would’ve been compromised by the resort buildings, or maybe because The Vintage and Cypress Lakes sit five minutes up the road. Whatever the reason, now that I’ve played it, I believe that HVGCC is comparable to the better known courses nearby, in all but one area (and an important one at that), the cost of the green fees. Using the discount voucher on this site to get a game with cart on a Friday, for $47, was excellent value! Significantly cheaper than the ~$90 at the others.

I liked the course because it had a great combination of holes, and because it was in excellent condition. The shorter holes early on gave me the intention to attack the course and try to score well, but then the stretch 4-9 had me thinking more about strategy than possible birdies. Even the holes around the back 12-16 required some thought about where to aim drives and irons, due to the presence of water hazards and OOB. (I still hit driver on each of them and only suffered on the 14th…)

My favourite holes were: – the 296m par 4 1st. First tee, drive over water, but it’s only a short hole. SOOOO tempting. Hit 2-hybrid, 8 iron and lipped out the birdie putt and was in a happy place already. – the par 3 4th, which at 167m with about 150m of that being over water, was where the notion that this was an easy course were dispelled. – the par 4 5th which on the card is 434m. It was only playing at just over 400m on the day but even so, that’s still a long enough hole for a resort course. OOB (a road) down the entire left. – the par 4 7th. 392m with water very prominently left in the driving zone, a narrow fairway that ran into water, and then a carry of that same water to get to the green! Index 1 and deservedly so! I hadn’t played here before so didn’t know how far the water was from the tee so took a 4 iron reasoning that I’d see what I was left with once I got up the fairway a little. It also meant I could pretty much take the water up the left out of play by staying straight. Next time I might use a 3-wood or hybrid as there is plenty of room straight off the tee, just don’t go left. You’ll then have the decision of whether to shoot for the green or not. I layed up with 5-iron short of the water with second and that only left wedge into the green, which I’m happy to say stopped within a couple of feet for me. When you’re playing good golf on a nicely conditioned course that makes you think the world is indeed a wonderful place! (oh, and the sun was shining!) – short par 4 11th, which dog-legs right almost straight away and has a line of bunkers on the left side of the fairway all the way around the corner. The ‘straight over the corner’ option that I tried means popping the ball over trees (or flying through the topmost branches with a whole lot of luck because I stupidly hit 3-iron), but they will only get taller, and there’s a little dam on that line that you can’t see from the tee. I guess the text-book answer was to hit a draw (I’m a lefty) off the tee, but I’m not good enough to that on command. – The 18th is another long par 4 that curves right after the drive, so if you want to shoot for the green, you’re probably going over the trees with your second at a green you can’t see. And there be bunkers awaiting you if you don’t carry all the way to the dancefloor.

I know I like this course because it has hard holes which are a challenge, but it also has easy holes which keep you positive about the round. Tees, fairways, bunkers and greens were in good condition and it didn’t cost an arm and a leg – this was how golf should be!

Played here as a warm up to playing at Avondale Golf Club not long after the rain. Front nine was fun, doesn’t reward short but straight hitting so if you are trying to be a smart golfer not the best course to be playing with a 209m par 3 and 400m par 4.

Just played at HVGC on the weekend. I was really looking forward to it having read the good reviews here. Unfortunately the course was quite brown and dry. Not too sure why this was as I thought the region would have received great rainfalls recently.

Otherwise the course was quite challenging with a good mixture of hole lengths. A fair bit of water and sand, which I wasn’t used to. Lost 9 balls all up!

51. jasetheace | Rated | 17 Apr 2007 | Add A Review

I stood on the 1st tee at 7am not expecting that much from this course, after having studied the scorecard (~5750m Par 70, seemed short) and noted the incredibly flat terrain that made up the course. Alas, the first three holes did nothing to raise my expectations – a couple of short par fours and par three so short I could have thrown my ball onto the green – but then something amazing happened – the couse jumped out and bit my head off.

A stunning par 3 water carry for the 4th, followed by three amazing par fours. The fifth – at 434m – must be the longest par four in the southern hemisphere, and the water carries on 5 and 6 will make the hardiest of single-markers grit their teeth on every shot. The 9th hole is a fabulous risk-reward par five, and the back nine – albeit suffering from lack of trees and a number of holes that are just too straight – is entertaining enough for most golfers.

I left with the impression that given the laser-levelled block of land the course is built on, the designer has done an admirable job providing interest and challenge to all golfers who play it.

The only real problem the course had was incredibly soft greens that were highly susceptible to ugly pitch mark damage. Other than that, a great experience.

If you’re in the Hunter, give the Crowne Plaza and Hunter Valley Golf Club a go in between glasses of Semillon…!

HVGC is a great social course but is behind The Vintage and Cypress Lakes when it comes to golf courses in the Upper Hunter. If you’re out for a bit of wine tasting and a hit on Sunday morning, then is your course. If you’re after something a bit more serious try The Vintage.

Don’t get me wrong there are some great holes, especially 4,6,7 and 18 and the course is kept in immaculate condition. The problem is the back nine and the slow start to the front. The majority of the back nine holes have the feel of being in a open paddock and you’re constantly looking for a cow. A few more fairway bunkers wouldn’t go astray and hopefully the trees between holes will have grown in the next ten years.

Measuring 5775m Par 70 from the back plates where I played it from. Quite a surprise as course is in superb condition from tee to green. Offers a shorter alternative to The Vintage and Cypress Lakes, but quite a nice layout.

With 5 Par 3s ranging from 110-210m, 10 Par 4s ranging from 260-435m and 3 Par 5s ranging from 435-515m the course is most underrated and not well advertised as it is overlooked for the other 2 longer courses.

The Crowne Plaza apartments are quite nice to stay in with a superb clubhouse overlooking the double 9th/18th greens, which in itself are quite challenging closers.

Course eases you into a round with 2 short 295m par 4s, then 2 easy par 3s. As you think about breaking a course record 435m 5th index 3 looks to break the good streak. The 345m 6th is a long teeshot (say 180m) over the water, then you cross the resort road to 390m 7th index 1 with water left and in front of green with bunkers littering the landing area both sides from the T. A long par 3 will see a stray Tshot in a bunker, then the 515m 9th over water to a large double green.

Inward 9 presents a more open (less trees and water) feel, with not many options off the T, but again a challenging closing 3 holes.

Water hazards that come into play include (1st, 4th, 6th, 7th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th, 15th, 17th, 18th)

Fantastic course in great condition, but you expect it from a newish course. Played here 16/12/06 and paid $95 weekend fees. There are discount vouchers around, but without it, I will still play here again.

Played the course on 17/11 - having only reopened about 7 weeks ago. The course is in excellent condition, and the greens are very true. Apparently there has not been significant changes to the front nine, but the back nine has had a fairly major rework.

A good mixture of long holes (several par 4's around the 400m mark - even off the whites) and some short but challenging holes (the 240m 11th is particularly memorable - imposing tee shot over a gully and dog leg that turns 90 degrees - the brave might cut a driver, but the smart play is 5 iron to the middle of the fairway and wedge)

Definitely worth a go while the course is relatively quiet.. I expect it won't stay that way for long!

55. Mark Barden | Rated | 29 Oct 2002 | Add A Review

This course is a surprise packet with some surprisingly long holes, particularly from the Blue Tees. The Par 4 1st is a great starting hole with a large lake in front of the tee and a small stream running along the right side of the spacious fairway.

The Par 3 4th is a real challenge with a green that runs at about a 30 degree angle from the tee with water guarding the entire green. Pin positioning could get very interesting especially if it is set in the back left corner.

The par 4 5th and 6th holes are among the best on the course with the sixth beeing a definite problem if playing into a northerly wind.

The stretch of holes from the 12th to the 16th run amongst the vineyards with the 13th in particular being most impressive.

Apparently the course will be closing for about 12 months from mid January 2003 for major construction works including a clubhouse and accommodation as well as some course re-developement.

If you get the chance to play this course, do not pass it up as both the fairways and greens are in great condition.
