The Oaks Golf & Country Club (Cessnock)

Hunter Valley, NSW | User Rating: Rate-2 (2.5) | Add A Review

UPDATE: The Oaks is closed for major renovation and is scheduled to re-open on the 1st December 2011.

The Oaks Golf Course is situated right in the heart of Hunter Valley Wine Country. The course is a tree lined Par 72 layout, measuring 6000 metres from the championship tees. Water Hazards compliment some of the holes making the course challenging but not intimidating.

The course was formerly known as the Cessnock Golf and Country Club which recently celebrated its 80th anniversary. It is home to the Jack Newton Junior International which has been played at the course for over 30 years. Past winners have included Aaron Baddeley, Karrie Webb and Sarah Kemp.

The Pro Shop is well stocked with the latest big brands in golf and is equipped with hire equipment including motorised golf cars. The club house creates a friendly environment to reward your game with a crisp ale or a boutique local wine.

This course is well and truly overshadowed by its higher quality neighbours. There are aspects of it that I liked (holes 4 and 5 were a nice little run), but all in all, it was quite a mixed bag.

Fairways were in pretty reasonable nick, greens were surprisingly fast, but patchy in some places (almost 1/3 of the 15th green was very patchy). The front 9 felt more interesting and less up and down than the back 9, and there were some bewildering design characteristics (such as a lone fairway bunker on the 18th that seemed to be only 160m or so from the back tee and didn’t really cut into the fairway proper).

The course closes next month for 18 months and will be redeveloped into a Jack Newton design. Will be interesting to see what he does to improve the layout – for a course that hosts a prestigious junior tournament, it didn’t seem to have the sort of spark and overall finesse that you’d expect. Not bad value, but you get better value at the other Hunter courses, even though you do pay a little more.

Played on Thursday 22nd Apl and really enjoyed the course and the members were friendly. The greens had just been cored 3 days before but were generally in good condition. The trees on the fairways can become a pain in the butt but make you think about your course management rather than just hitting the ball. Loved playing here and will return one day if possible

Played last week, very nice course, challenging, good greens, fairways were also in good condition. Staff were nice, met the Club President who was a great person and spent about 10 minutes chatting to me. Very pleasant experience.

PROS

  • Great value for Hunter Valley Course
  • Terrific people, very welcoming
  • Challenging 18 hole course

Cons

  • Pro shop not well stocked with clubs and very expensive
  • Doglegs were frustrating

Very straight forward layout provides a good test. On the drive in it gives you the impression of some rundown course but once you get out there it is alright. Holes 7, 17 and 18 are my favourites. Gets very warm up there in the middle of summer. People are friendly up there. It is a cheaper alternative to the other courses in the region e.g. The Vintage

Played on Fri 2 Jan 2009. Fair experience. The course advertises itself as the home of the Jack Newton Junior golf tournament. Unfortunately the first impression of the course is of a run down golf course that has had better days and only fit for juniors. The entry road is full of pot holes to a dirt parking area, the driving range is a grass field, and the putting greens small and mediocre. And this used to be the Cessnock Country Club? However, I liked the course itself. The feel is like a country stroll through the Oak trees or across fields and paddocks. The layout is a decent test of golf with an even amount of open and narrow driving holes. The oak trees are a problem if you are not straight. Some oak trees narrow the driving areas. Even if you are straight, some trees obstruct the approach to the green. The fairways are in good condition – the greens average. The strong smell due to recent fertilizing was tough to handle and the cow chips on the fairway were a bit of a nuisance. Every Friday during the summer, greens are over watered to the point of being flooded with the hole totally filled with water. Inexpensive: $18 M-Th, $22 F-Su. However, Fridays during the summer should be the weekday rate due to the flooded green conditions.

Good fairways, terrible greens- bumpy and patchy, front nine has a good layout, back nine is a bit up and down. $18 is great value and not too crowded.

Terrible, Go else where, i attempted to play on this course in November and found nothing but trouble, called for tee time but no record when i arrived. I was really looking forward to this course because of the reputation but remain bitterly dissapointed. Also played at Branxton and would reccomend it prior to the oaks. Course in terrible condition compared to others in the area. I will probably give the course one more chance in the coming months, if no improvment i will not return

If you are going to be in the Hunter Valley and don't mind a very basic course then this one is OK for the price I guess. The fairways are OK and the greens are fair for a public course but don't miss the greens even by a few feet as you will be chipping off terrible lies - even short of and through the greens.

However, that said, the bar is about pub prices and the course is fair.

This course is a must if in the Vineyard area and your looking for an alternate to the over pricing which comes with this area. The greens are true, the fairways are lush and with the course always growing it really does pose a challange to any golfer. The back nine has some really hard holes which require pin point accuracy from tee to green. Give it a go,

a real course with real people involved.

This golf club is very nice. Plenty of trees, always in good condition and a great club house.

There are times when strategy comes into play so you can't just blast away with your driver. If you've had a good score here, you've played well.
