The course has 27 holes and we played 10-27. We were told by a local that they had problems with the water recycling plant over the last couple of months and it showed in the presentation of the course. It was quite dry and the fairways were a little sparse. The greens were only average and in need of some work without being in bad shape.

We played on a Monday and it is a special rate of $10 on Mondays, so excellent value. There are some hazards you can’t see, particularly on the 21st where a drain runs across the fairway about 50 metres short of the green. Overall a reasonable layout with some interesting holes, but needs to get the water going again.

If you only have time for one game in Townsville I think that The Willows should be the choice.

Probably the best course in Townsville. course is in spectatular condition (2 weeks back), every hole is interesting, good use of bunker placement and plenty of hazards to catch the stray bad shot.

Played Townsville last week and it was a good course. I played 19-27 and 1-10 It isn’t a course I would travel a distance to play, as I really didn’t feel there was anything special about it, but it is a good solid course that is conditioned rather well. The greens are in excellent condition, and the price was cheap at around $25. The design is quite good. It is quite a tight course and driving accurately will be rewarded. I played Rowes Bay and Willows as well and feel that the Willows was the best experience to play, but would definitely play Townsville again.

Well after heavy rain early in the year the course has now recovered well and is now improvinging daily. During this week all the greens are getting cored and scrafied for the up coming Townsville Open on May 5-7.

As a course 1-9 is definatelty the 9 where you need to score well….as 10-18 is know as the river 9 and alway has a slightly stiff breeze blowing. The key holes to score well on this 9 is 11,12,13,14 get through these okay and your home free….but hell they can bite you!!!

As for 19-27 it is said it to be a difficult 9 but not really holes 22,23 are really the only difficult hole as 22 is 410m Par 4…..which is alway into the wind and there is a large water hazard on your right. 23 plays slightly shorter around the 386m but agian water down the right. Other than that the 9 is pretty comfortable!!!

Well if you get a chance give it a ago….its a nice course to enjoy for $25

Played here in mid January and again early this month and of the 27 holes played the same 18 both times (holes 19-27 then 1-9 which is called the ‘Red Course’). This was not surprising though as the other 9 holes are actually out of play, and getting refurbished I would guess. There must be pretty significant work being done for the holes to remain out of play for over 8 months.

Townsville GC (Red) is a Par 70 (35 35) course of 5927m from the members tees and has an ACR of 69. It’s a fairly open parkland style course set just south of the city centre. A couple of years ago it was clearly the pre-eminent course in Townsville, but having recently played all three, that is no longer the case. This course has probably dropped in quality and The Willows has contined to get better and better. Given that Willows hosted the ‘06 Qld Masters (and will continue to host it I believe) it is probably the number one these days.

The conditioning at TGC seemed to have dropped and the Red course does have a number of holes which run back and forth beside one another with little variation, which probably detracts from the overall game. That’s not to say that this isn’t a nice course to play, because it is, and there are enough hazards and design challenges to make the game enjoyable, but really, it feels like any other standard suburban course. If only there was more of the rainforest stand found near the 3rd green / 4th tee then perhaps the course would have a better feel.

If you are prone to a bit of perspiration, avoid midday in summer. The enjoyment factor definitely drops with the sun screen running into your eyes.

Once you have sorted the weather out , enjoy all the combinations the 27 hole course has to offer.

Well maintained with heaps of variety ( maybe too much with the greens) the challenge for a first timer is to play somewhere near the handicap so a few rounds may be in order.

Be prepared for slowish comp days because it is always packed.

Priced in the the mid range i.e. below resort course, but not far off in condition and standards.

I have now played all 3 of Townsville's major golf courses. The Willows dosen't compare with this course or Rowes Bay. It is a toss up between Rowes Bay and Townsville, which is the better course and really, it is next to impossible to decide. I have to say Townsville by a flea's you know what.

Townsville has 27 holes, all of which are challenging. A friend and I were only going to play 9 but because of the layout and style of the course, we did the lot. The club house and amenities throughout the entire course are extremely good. A round of 18 during the week costs $16 I recall, a cart for this is $20. For the facilities provided, this is great value. It is a pretty course, with nice fairways, good greens, plenty of trees and sand/ water traps, just what you would expect from a good course. Pluses include a drinks/ food cart that comes around to you, a control room with PA to assist with players tee off times and locations. Negatives, I cant remember exactly where on the course, but there is a section located near a sewer treatment area. The smell clears the sinuses. The people we met there all seemed very friendly and helpful. Good course to play for any golfer really.

Winter in Townsville is golf time. The Townsville golf course offers 27 excellent holes that are enough to challenge the most experienced golfer and at the same time provide a fantastic environment for the novice or social player.
