Shelly Beach is a fun course in a fantastic location… But the layout leaves a lot to be desired. There are very few memorable holes, and a number of holes rewards big hitters regardless of direction or shot shape. The course does not require any real thought or strategy from tee to green on most holes.

I always leave this course feeling like they should tear up around 14 of the holes and start again. With this piece of land they could build a true championship-calibre course – but it seems they’re happy to have a medium-standard track to keep the punters happy.

I’ll play here again from time to time, but if I want a real test of golf I’ll look elsewhere.

Sadly, the weather go the better of us. We stood in the bar while torrential rain fell, filling the bunkers with water before we started, yet the course remained open – so no refund.

Got to be one of the better Public courses around.
Northern part of the course (mainly front 9) is its peace du resistance.
Sweeping ocean views, and beautiful undulations.
Southern half mainly consist of straight up and down par 4s.
Great club as well

Nice course in very good condition. The fairways allowed for good clean contact and the greens very impressive, smooth and quick. A nice breeze made some of the par 4’s into the wind a good contest, so it would be very interesting when the wind was really blowing. A good par 71 that would be a reasonably easy walk. I cheated due to the cart being part of the ’Tee Times’ deal of $42.50. The guy in the pro shop seemed a bit bemused by the price I had paid. The only down side to the day was that I played at the tail end of one of their comp days. (Thursday) Being on my own and in a cart, I hit off at 1.10pm and caught the last group in the comp in the space of 3 holes. It then took a further 4.5 hrs to get to the 18th tee with an average 5 to 6 min wait on each tee. By the time I reached the 18th tee it was getting too dark so headed for the pro shop.

PROS

  • Course condition

Cons

  • slow rounds

Also known as Tuggarah Lakes Golf Club. This is a good course right on the beach. The fairways and greens were in excellent condition, with the greens being quick, especially downhill. The greens are difficult to read and the pace will surprise as they are also quite soft. This can lead to a bobbly surface when there is a lot of traffic across them.

The layout is interesting and is an easy walk. They are currently remodelling the clubhouse, so the original 9th hole is out of play and will be replaced with another once the renovations are complete. This means that they have a temporary par 3 in play as the 16th. Be aware that it is not signposted at all and you may have difficulty finding the 16th tee from the 15th green, Check the map on the card carefully. To play this you need to go back towards the clubhouse.

Green fees of $40 are reasonable for the standard of course you get. One downside is the pace of play, we played in the Saturday comp and it took at least 5 hours to play.

Had a great game at Shelley although it was blowing a gale on the beachfront holes. I think I won because I had the highest score with a 65 and 66. Great deal on ISEEKGOLF for $30 with a cart. Cheers

As always a great game of golf at a superb coast golf course. Great value too for the $30 with a cart. Dont think the value can be beaten. Will def be back in the very near future.

Course is in superb condition, making the $30 deal (with carts) excellent value. The new clubhouse expansion looks spectacular, but this has led to a slight change in the course since I last played in January, and the replacement for the old 9th hole is rather weak. Shame that the tee markers were so far forward – made the course a little short for our group of A and B graders.

A beautifully situated course with magnificent coastal views. A long undulating and lush course with plenty to challenge all standard of players. I’ll be back.

played here yesterday (monday 12:30). First nine was slow with alot of very social golfers, back nine was fast and finished game just over 4hrs. very nice public course with some awesome beach views on a few holes. tees, fairways and greens in very good condition for a public course. holes 6 and 15 a real standout and would rate as 2 of the best short par 4’s i’ve ever played. The par 3’s are quite weak but overall for $30 with a cart a bargain!

PROS

  • price
  • views of shelly beach
  • great condition for public course

Cons

  • weak par 3's

Great golf course spoiled by slow play of other players – course managers need to take charge of play, including permitting considerable quantities of alcohol on course – delays resulted in a 25 minute wait at 10 and ultimately meant round was terminated by darkness.
Setting was superb although greens have a long way to go before recovering from maintenance.

It was a beautiful autumn day on the coast, great for a game of golf. Unfortunately, the greens at Tuggerah had just been dressed and were full of sand. Other than that, the course is in top condition, too bad putting was a nightmare.

PROS

  • Nice Weather

Cons

  • Dressed greens

My wife shouted me a game here as part of my 50th birthday celebrations & with her being a non golfer was a little apprehensive as to what to expect from this track. I need not have worried as it ticked all the boxes for a great days golf. The restaurant was great for lunch and reasonalby priced, the staff at the pro shop were freindly and helpful. The course itself was in great condition, almost impossible to find a bad lie on or near the fairways and the greens were immaculate. The layout is interesting with some holes giving fantastic ocean views leaving memories that won’t fade too quickly. I am a mid handicapper and have played many courses over the years and found this gem gave me a great game of golf. It’s not tricked up with monster par 4’s or par 3’s that you have to use 3 woods on so if you’re half a decent golfer you should be able to handle this course and have an enjoyable experience. Can’t wait till I can play it again.

Course is in great condition, lush & soft fairway, big & fast greens. Lovely views out to the ocean on some holes. If you’re abit wayward, you can still salvage the hole with a good recovery shot. Amazing value for money compared to what ones pay in Sydney! Overall, a fantastic course.

In a nutshell, very satisfactory.

Fairway condition: 9/10
Green Speed: 9 feet
Green cond: 9/10

A couple of holes are along the beach with spectacular view.

The best course in Wyong except Kooindah waters. The only downside is that you have to cross a road a couple of times to go to the next hole.

Tuggerah Lakes is in wonderful condition. Fairways are like carpet and the greens run fast and true. The view it provides is worth the visit alone. A must for all golfers – beginners or low markers. Its a thinkers course and suits long hitters and those who just keep it in play. Play in the afternoon and test yourself in the breeze from the ocean. I will be back for sure.

22. Dan_1984 | Rated | 21 Dec 2009 | Add A Review

The big fast greens weren’t looking as good as usual. Bit slower at the moment with way too many unrepaired pitch marks. Fairway bunkers also needed some attention. As always, the clubhouse side of the course was a pleasure to play but the other side of the course is still as boring as ever & needs to undergo a major re-design to make better use of the prime real estate. All in all it was still a good round of golf for the price.

Played this course on the way back to Sydney from Port Stephens after reading previous reviews and think it’s grossly over rated as the best on the central coast. Its an OK course in reasonable condition with reasonable facilities but quite easy for all but C graders. Some very short holes. I think The Springs (formerly Green Hills G&C) is a far better track, better value and an easier drive from Sydney. Not to mention Kooinda Waters and Magenta Shores if you’re looking for top notch.

The couse remains one of the best on the coast ones I have played, they have carried out allot more works on the course since I was there last. The fairways are at times challenging and the greens very fast, you need to practice first to judge how fast they are.I envy those who are members who can afford to play there, I look forward to play there again.

A nice seaside course and very pleasant to play in good weather. Greens were fast and very true.Expect some three putts. Fairways in great condition. Without any wind it is not a hard course but with normal coastal winds it makes some of the holes a different proposition. Front nine great, back nine a little repetitious but some really good holes like 16.Great location and views and good facilities. Well worth a visit by any handicap golfer.
I will happily play it again.

Nice course with great ocean views. The front 9 is top quality but the back 9 is very up and down until you get to the 16th which is a great par 4 with undulating fairways and spectacular ocean views. The greens are the quickest i’ve played on they are even faster then Kooindah Waters they are also pure. The 18th is a great finishing hole with the balcony of the club house pretty much at green level you don’t want to overclub coming into that green. My favourite holes are 5,6,16 and 17. 4 out of 5 stars because of the start of the back 9.

have to say have not been as bored by a course in a long time, up and down not much thought needed with the exception of holes 5,6,16,17 which also provide the best ocean views par 3s are weak, the course in general is in good condition, rough in parts quite tough as your ball tends to sit down in the grass, found the greens a bit bumpy but we did play behind large saturday comp clubhouse, staff, bistro were all excellent just did not enjoy the course disappointed after reading other reveiws

I was lucky enough to find myself with a few days 'spare' from a work trip and one of the people I met with suggested that for a round head to this course - unfortunately I can't suggest anything for him when he visits up here in Brisbane (save for the expensive championship courses). $17.50 for 18 hole -4 of which (I believe 3 -7) are along the ocean. Plenty of forgiveness if you aren't accurate, lush fairways and greens and an awesome view from the 19th. Almost worth travelling from Brissy just to play the course again

Played this course on the 13th of this month and i was awestruck. Costing me a mere $8 for the round, i thought that no matter what the course had in store, it would be worth it.

Hit a great opening drive and then smoothed a 6 iron onto the green to set up a simple 2-putt for birdie. The 5th and 6th holes provide some great views but the wind was howling by the time i got there. I finished the front nine at +1 which wasnt bad considering the conditions that had taken force. The back nine is a long walk but the 16th is contrary to this but is a stand out of the course. The green is reachable in 1 but a lay-up is needed if you are a safe player. It is a very altering terrain hole which has a angled green which has great views also. The course was in immaculate condition and the staff were friendly and helpfull. I hope to return many times.

Played 19/10/05

Just a half a star below the best courses I have played. Joined up with a couple of locals which turned out to be sensible given the definite possibility of getting lost!

Long par fives, interesting fours and tricky threes. It's not the club's fault we played in a howling gale which tended to take a bit away from the incredible scenery.

The locals bailed out after nine leaving me with Klaus from Victoria who, along with the leader of the opposition who doesn't play, quit with three to go. The Relic soldiered on , had one over on the last three (very tough ) holes.

Beat the rain into the very nice clubhouse (hope they're having this back in Qld.)

Will be back in good weather and give it a five.

The course was in excellent shape and I played in in near perfect conditions, and I was very, very impressed. And the great ocean views took my mind off the poor shots.

I don't think I'd like to play this course in the wet with a screaming southerly blowing but the gentle seabreeze that blew today was just right.

Friendly club staff and an excellent restuarant made the after-golf experience equally enjoyable.

Put it on your list of courses to play.

I was lucky enough to get a hit on Tuggarah lakes (aka Shelly Beach) last Wednesday night, and I can report that the course made quite an impression.

Practice facilities are very important to me, and TLGC delivers well on this front will a practice nets, and a large chip friendly putting green.

This course is very close to what I would consider A grade, with excellent greens, and enough obstacles to keep the majority of punters honest.

The 1st hole is a medium range double dog leg par 5 that is deceptively long. This leads into two testing par 4's, the better of which being the 3rd which features a wicked approach shot. A tricky water carry is presented to the ladies on the 4th hole, with the course providing both threats and opportunities for the next few holes. The 6th hole probably the gem of the front 9. The ocean view drive here is critical. Thankfully, the wind was calm when I played it.

The back nine continues to provide a challenge for all levels. When you look down the 16th fairway, you will realise (like I did) that the CCR round here could get v.ugly when the wind blows. When combined with 17 and 18, these three holes present one of the most difficult finishes around.

Overall the course is one of the best 4 star courses in the region. Only a little repetition on the southern side of the road prevents this course from making a big A-rating.

I played Tuggerah lakes in January this year with my farther. I have to say that this is my favourite coursei have played.

The course is located right on shelly beach and offers terrific views. The course was the best looking course I have played on with very well maintained teas, fairways, greens.

The course plays very long with a couple par 4s exceeding over 400m. There are also ling par 5s well over 500m.

The greenfeas are average on weekends but during the week very very good.

I highly recomend playing this course as it is a real gem!

I walked this course 4 times with my son in the recent Jack Newton State Age C'ships. It's in great condition with wonderful greens that are nice and big and fast.

Some of the par 4's are long as well as the 533 metre par 5 18th.

Doglegs, trees, bunkers, water..great.

I'm going up from Sydney next weekend for a game in the Tuggerah Lakes Cup and can't wait.

Get there ASAP.
