An absolute shocker of a course! Played here as we needed a golf course close to the city – that is the ONLY thing it has going for it! Its putt-putt course is looked after better.
Tees, fairways, putting surface all in terrible condition.

Played here for the first time on Saturday morning. The course is not too bad, very hilly. It is exceptionally expensive $52 per person (including 18 holes & a cart). A massive let down on teh back nine is the very short par 3’s. It’s basically like pitch and putt but paying a premium price.

Cons

  • Price
  • Par 3's in the back 9 feeling of being ripped off.

Can’t beat the location, very easy to fit in 9 before work (walking). Sure it’s not the greatest course, but it has a few challenges and is perfect for a hit before and after work. Found the early morning staff very helpful.

Very disappointed after playing here with a group of 10 on Friday 07/10 morning. Paid about $80 each for a round, carts, hire clubs and a few bits and pieces. Mid strength beer only on course(at full strength beer prices). Wasn’t informed that greens had been cored and sanded(some courses I’ve played at offer a discount in this case). After golf had a couple of beers at the bar(at about $8-$9 a pop) and were treated woefully by bar staff telling us all tables were reserved, except one over in corner outside(we were told to move twice). Obviously this course relies on it’s closeness to the city; maybe knock the golf course down and build villas, a big pub charging $10 a beer and a coffee shop selling lattes. By the way, we weren’t drunk or obnoxious and some(not all) of our party are regular golfers.

Reasonable course, back 9 does suffer from having too many par 3s but the greens were true. Hired a cart which was relieved at as some of the distances between holes were massive. Arrived early so thought I would have a beer, $8.50 for a schooner!!! Used hire clubs which were excellent, my clubs arrive from the UK tomorrow so am looking forward to playing some other courses around here.

There appear to be much better courses at lower prices available

With its close proximity to Brisbane CBD, there is no suprise Victoria Park is ’only’ a par 63 and less than 4000m in lenghth. The layout is very undulating which can be punishing and elevated greens and tees make for a tough challenge. The course demands accuracy on all holes and you can find yourself in some trouble if you miss fairways and greens. The driving range facility is first class and handy to warm up before your round. $32 for 18 holes on the weekend in Brisbane isn’t bad value either.

Played here on Monday this week. Things started off great, but on the eight hole they had the sprinklers on full blast. We decided to skip to the next hole and same thing so we couldn’t play. Sprinklers were blasting the path too, so we got soaked trying to drive through. Went to clubhouse and they told us they had no control over the sprinklers and displayed a horrible attitude, completely unapologetic about the situation. After prompting to call ground staff they did, but because of fungus on the greens they couldn’t stop the water, and explained the water had some sort of chemicals in it for the fungus – the water we got sprayed by. We got our money back and left. Such a shame because I was enjoying the day up until that point. I will never got back because of the attitude of the people who work there

The course is in good condition considering how wet it was. The front 9is a good challenge, it’s a pity the back 9 has been shortened so much. The greens where a little on the slow side outplayed true. An enjoyable game.

The course is veryshort and as far as i am concerned a par 65 is a joke. The course is mostly a goat track and hole 14 is like walking up mt everest. One of the worst rounds I have ever played. Despite the unconditioned fairways the greens were quite good. If you do play i reccomend getting a cart.

The course is quite short as mentioned but it was in reasonable condition when we played here on the weekend. Most of the greens in particular were excellent. Some of the nicest I’ve played on in a while. There were one or two patchy ones, but they were still passable. Not bad considering this is a publicly run facility.

I’ve also noticed a few comments and gripes regarding the course marshall…I must say I agree. The guy could with a lesson in manners and realising who’s paying his wage. I understand he probably has to deal with many idiots out on the course, but his manner of approach to our group first thing in the morning left a lot to be desired.

Overall, we still had a good time however.

This really is a joke of a course. Par 65!!!!, and a damn easy par 65 at that. Unfortunately the busway has eaten into the course, many years ago it was a much tougher test of golf, but to charge $50 with a cart is a joke. Most par 4’s are no more than a driver and sand wedge, and the par 3 16th is a joke.

The pro shop is a marketer’s wet dream, a lot of overpriced branded merchandise but not a lot of substance. You can tell they are really making their money from the driving range and "coffee shop set". They’d do better if they demolished the course and sold it off for housing.

Played for first time today. I liked it. Its different and I like any opportunity to play, especially in the city! Sure, its short. I didn’t think it was overly narrow. I normally walk but carted this one- gotta admit it would be a tough park!

213m Par 4 was a little ridiculous but buffed the ego, as did a couple of other holes…

I’m not very used to playing off undulating lies so this was different. Bunkers were GUR for some reason- they do need some attention…Greens varied from soft, lush and true to hard, rocky and unforgiving…

Loved the cityscape on most holes. Loved the $2 BeesNees afterwards!

Good that they had uni student rates ($19)- but they do realise next to everyone gets a cart here and that’s where they make their money… ($38 per cart)

after looking at everybody elses reviews i thought i would go play this course for myself and see what it was really like. have been going to the driving range there for a while. the facilities are amazing and the staff at the pro shop are always friendly and like to give you a hand and have great knowledge. i have to admit im not the best golfer. have been playing for a few years now though and just recently started playing a few times a week. I found this course very tough and sometimes very boring. the fairways on most of the holes arnt very wide. so any half decent shot at most other courses end up being shockers going onto the hole next to you or in some bush somewhere. the last thing is the bunkers. i dont know if they are making new ones but most of them had rock edges with had very little sand in them.

now the negative bits over. i do enjoy playing golf at any course. if its california creek to Pacific pines so i did enjoy my round. the drink cart lady was a bonus. she even took one of my tee offs which i was dissapointed because she ended up losing my ball haha. if she does read this pm me so we can go for a round sometime.

i will be back to the course because it is very close to home and i will recommend it to people that live around the area and want to have a somewhat cheap round of golf.

I have been to the driving range at Vic Park often over the last few years, but only played the course for the first time on Saturday.

Its already well documented in previous posts about the shortness of the course, and the fact the finishing holes are 3 consecutive par 3’s. So I won’t dwell on those points. My experience at Vic Park wasn’t a bad one. Although going on what has been discussed, maybe my round was enjoyable because we never saw the course marshal. We did however see the drinks cart a couple of times which bought a smile to our faces.
Due to the shortness of the course, its easy to shoot a good score here even if your not hitting great off the tee. If you’re chipping and putting well, expect to be happy with your round.
The greens were a disappointment for us. They were so dry, either their watering system is on the blink or they are going to reseed the greens very soon. That being said, they still rolled pretty well and held pace.

We walked the course with push buggies, and regretted not paying the extra for the carts. There is quite a walk between holes in some areas and a cart would have sped this up a little.
For a 12:30 time slot on a Saturday we didn’t have too many hold ups. I expected the course to be busier than it was.

For a public course, St Lucia is better designed and maintained, but for locality and facilities Vic Park gets my vote.

Fun day out, but far from a memorable course

Victoria Park Golf Course, is often miss-perceived as a basic ’one dimensional course’ that has happened to occupy some prime real estate in the heart of the city. While players often feel disappointed after playing on this much speculated course, it is truly the various components or layers that make up the course and prove it to be a worthwhile and enjoyable experience.

First of all, the course has often been disputed as too simple and basic, and various holes are. But this course, as being one of the most elevated and sloped course in this region, allows for these accusations to be dismissed. As this feature is displayed well throughout the course, and contributes to the complexity and complexion that is often initially overlooked. However this prominent feature also has its down sides, and this ultimately comes through the form of mobility around the course. I once played walking through the course without a buggy or a motorized cart, and found myself struggling to finish the course. I believe even with a buggy it would still be a daunting task to complete this course, so I do recommend a Cart, but do be careful after some of the stories I have heard about.

While the Victoria Park has something to offer: a great atmosphere, a great Pro Shop, and What seems to be a well designed Putt Putt course. The overall course is riddled with many flaws!

Despite the course having some enjoyable and reasonably designed holes that do keep golfers flooding into the complex, it is the minority of unconsidered closing hole approaches that leaves Golfers wanting more to take away from the experience. The course itself finishes with a series of short Par 3s that honestly look like they have been thrown into the course just to make it 18 holes!

As well as this, I, like many others found myself being mistreated by the staff working through the course and the Pro Shop. I was wrongly accused, and the ’On Course Marshall’s’ were nothing but a hassle, and if anything they delayed my speed of play and impacted my own level of play!

The course really is as long as it can be for the land the complex occupies. However the real let down of this, is that there is only one Par 5 through the entire course. This has a significant impact how golfers view the course, and really dismisses any claims of this course being a real ’Championship Course’ experience.

Overall, the course is reasonably good value for money, and I did find myself enjoying the experience for the most part. However, the overall experience is drastically impacted by the shear ignorance of various build ups through the day.

I will go again in the future, but not because I intend to follow up on a first round love for the course. But rather, to redeem on what I am sure should be cherished part of my individual Golfing life.

Ultimately, the pros and the cons cancel each other out in the end, and it is up to you to make the decision for yourself.

PROS

  • Great Location within the City
  • Well Maintained
  • Good Value
  • Great Atmosphere

Cons

  • Unfreindly Staff
  • Poor Designed Holes
  • Very Busy
  • Little Variety

Victoria Park’s website has no trouble enticing expantant golfers to a seemingly picture-perfect golf experience, but words can be very deceiving.

If you are expecting Victoria Park to offer a course with a variety of challenging and unique holes, you will be disappointed. If you are expecting Victoria Park to offer a course that’s fairways and greens are in mint condition, you will be disappointed. If you are expecting Victoria Park to offer a course with friendly staff, well you will probably be as disappointed as Kenny Perry was when he lost the 2009 Masters.

While Victoria Park’s convenient location on the edge of the Brisbane CBD will save you driving to the outskirts of the city to play a round of golf, this pole position comes with many downsides. Unsurprisingly, the course is packed during the weekdays, and if you even have the thought of going there on a weekend, you’d better stop reading this review, pick up the phone now and hope that they have a tee time free for you. The course’s central location also attracts mobs of drunken businessmen, so don’t be surprised if you are almost run over by one of these by a cart driven by one of these wild animals.

On a serious note, the course does deserve some credit. It does have some nice holes, but what is present is greatly overshadowed by what is absent. More specifically, the course only has one par 5, and of the par 4’s that are included in the course, most of them are poorly designed’straight-away’ holes that pose little challenge to the average golfer. Most golf courses gather a reputation for a clever design that builds suspense in any competition, however Victoria Park’s string of 3 par 3 finishing holes leaves alot to be desired.

While they may not be an integral part of a golfing experience, friendly staff always add a professional touch to a golf course’s atmosphere. This, however, is not the case at Victoria Park. Victoria Park’s website promotes the fact that the course has a group of marshalls that supposedly move through each of the holes offering ’friendly’ advice to golfers on how to play their shots. I can bet you a round at Augusta National that you will not find one of these marshalls anywhere on the course. Go ahead, bring some binoculars, try and prove me wrong. I can guaruntee you will not succeed. The only thing you might find are rude, uniformed drivers of golf carts with mp3 players glued to their ears. Surely these couldn’t be the Marshalls that the course’s website describes. Could they?

Overall, Victoria Park is a golf course that promises a lot, yet delivers very little. The course is situated in the Heart of Brisbane, but this convenience in outweighed by a below average course desgin and some very rude staff. If one of your golfing buddies rings you up to invite you to a round at Victoria Park, say you have a wedding, or a funeral, or a family occasion – just anything that will prevent you from playing at Victoria Park.

PROS

  • Convenience - to some degree

Cons

  • Poor design
  • Average course condition
  • Rude staff
  • Very Busy

That’s sad about the previous reviewer with losing some clubs.

I have always had a great time at Vic Park. I have played it 12 or 15 times and found the old guy in the pro-shop really friendly and helpful. I love the hills on the course and while I agree that to finsh with 3 par 3s is a bit disappointing (on teh back 9) I find doing the front 9 before work really good. It has a great do-or-die first hole where a good drive will have you on the green in one. The short par 4 dog-leg fifth is a gimme birdie and there’s a long par 5 in there somewhere as well. Its great with the hills (unlike Virginia which is flat as a pool table). It would be good to have more fairwasy bunkers and water traps though.

PROS

  • Proximity to City
  • Hills
  • Pro Shop
  • Driving range

Cons

  • The $2 deal for 45 range balls should be available the whole week
  • Carts (you can be sitting there with your foot pressed to the board for 60 seconds before it starts moving)
  • Too many par 3s on the back 9

Very short course, because of the busway. Lots of par 3’s. The par 18th is very dissapointing. to finish a round with a 9iron is pretty ordinary. the last 3 holes are par 3’s. The driveable 7th is good fun, especially with the wind behind you. Could possibly not use driver the whole course, which is boring!

Played here in late May, as everybody has mentioned it is a shorter course but it is still great value. Plenty of carts available, and if you play during the week like we did, you can make it through 18 in really good time.

Great views and scenary and quite an interesting course with undulating hills. Only issue I had was the 18th hole was in a very ordinary state due to ongoing repairs, which was a dissapointing way to finish the round.

As others have mentioned some of the bunkers have incredibly hard soil that I wouldn’t like to be hitting out of, but overall most of the bunkers were in good condition.

Also the staff are very friendly and more than helpfull.

PROS

If Victoria Park was another 2000m or so, it would be up there for one of the best courses in Brisbane. The greens are some of the best I have played on, very true and nice to putt on. There are some great and challenging holes, as well as some very easy holes that are birdie opportunities every time. Its just a shame its so short. It tests your ability to play the ball from above or below your feet as it is so hilly. Definitely get a cart. Its hectic on the weekends, get on early or during the week.

Played 9 holes on the 17th Oct 2008 in the afternoon. Hole 1 and 9 have been cut short!! Hole 1 started in the middle of the fairway and hole 9 finished in the middle of the fairway with a totally unplayable green. To even call it a “green” is just wrong! Felt so mad with no one telling us of the current course condition and there was no discount. Will not go back to this place again.

Played Victoria Park for the first time a week ago after a number of visits to the impressive driving range. Was looking forward to playing the hilly course but ended up disappointed mainly due to the current weather conditions and lack of grass on the sloping fairways. Some fairways were boardering on unplayable. The last three holes are a poor and boring finish leaving you with an empty feeling. The cheap green fees midweek are good but I wont play there again until we get some decent rain. The use of a cart is highly recommended!

It is a nice course but not the longest of them with par being 65. It creates a challenge to the odd golfer especially on the 5th green where a if a downhill putt is missed can lead to a sure bogey.

Victoria Park is a public, council operated golf complex directly opposite to Queenslands largest hospital complex (good for all the golf-playing doctors), and it is only 5-10 minutes from the city centre. It has an excellent driving range facility with a price to match, and good catering facilities. Unfortunately, the course lets the rest of the complex down.

The tee areas and the greens are well maintained and fairly true. The fairways are grass, but are patchy or covered in buffalo. Because the course is so mountainous, you have some very difficult lies which really do test you. As others have commented, the par 3's and some of the 4's are very short but the severe uphill angles and hitting blind to narrow greens can really blow out your score if you are not careful. But the rest of the holes have wide fairways so they don't punish you for some stray drives. I only lost one ball, and I think that was because the group in front of me picked it up thinking it had come through from the driving range adjacent to the fairway. The distinct lack of change room facilities is a big drawback, and the cost was probably a bit much for mine, compared to what is on offer elsewhere. But still, it was a good mornings golf, and would recommend the course for all standards of golfer.

35. Brettles86 | Rated | 17 Jul 2006 | Add A Review

This course for mine was very enjoyable. Like the others have said you do really need a cart on this course as it is very hilly. There are plenty of par 3's and while some of them are short you still need to hit straight us many of them will kill you if you dont hit the green as you should. Players will need to be good with the uphill approach shots from about 100 inwards. i Failed to take enough club on several occasions which effected my score which in total was well under my handicap. Highlight of the day was hooking the ball onto the roof of the busway and having in bounce back into the middle of the fairway! (15th)

Greens were a bit slow. fairways were ok but have been effected by lack of rain. Otherwise i was quite pleased by what the course has to offer.

Victoria Park is a very good experience for any golfer. It is less difficult than the majority of courses, and gives an opportunity for a good score.

The cost is fair and the staff extremely friendly. There is only one par 5 and quite a number of par 3s due to limited land available, but it is a course that rewards straight hitting with only a couple of holes rewarding long hitting as all par 4s are reachable with driver and short iron.

It is always quite busy, especially weekends, so try to get on mid week.

Great experience for the average golfer to increase confidence.

I played Victoria Park for the first time this Saturday and the previous reviewers were not mistaken, this course is hilly, very hilly.

A golf cart is an absolute must unless you have about 7 litres of water with you and a miraculous ability to keep it cold for 3.5 hours. I used a trolley and did not have 7 litres of water so by the end I felt that I'd lost about 5kg in weight. Great if you're dropping weight for your next boxing match but for your average punter its not the greatest feeling in the world.

Aside from that I found the course to be in excellent condition all the way round. The bunkers are the only downfall, some were so hard that you would wreck your Sand wedge if you attempted an escape.

Overall, for a public course and for $25.50 this is a very good course. Perhaps not enough challenges for a low handicapper though as the par 3s are very short and there aren't any real traps protecting them.

Will definitely play here again, with a buggy next time.

Iíve played this course on a number of occasions and have never had a problem getting a booking on the course. Victoria Park is a short (Par 65) course which can be a good confidence builder for those of us frequently shooting high 90ís/ sub 110ís. The course itself is fairly well maintained although the greens are inconsistent, with some being great and otherís being truly horrid, especially the 4th and 5th. The Fairways arenít fantastic either compared to other Brisbane and rural courses Iíve played.

The course does offer some great views of the city and, as mentioned by other reviewers, is very, VERY hilly. But this does allow the walking golfer a great opportunity to get the heart rate up and between holes, especially the back nine, a long stroll between greens and tees (15 to16 and 16 to 17 being the worst offenders). I was also disappointed with other users of the course. I realise this is a public course but Iíve never (on any public course) seen so many bunkers being left unraked (probably due to the many hackers not understanding golfing rules) and people acting very irresponsible in the carts, we actually saw people purposely driving carts into trees.

Itís not a bad course overall, but there are far better around Brisbane.

I have played this course many times over the years because of its central position to the city.

Definitely a very hilly golf course, where a cart is a absolute must.

Number 1 TIP,play the 10th tee off first as the crowds on the 1st are unreasonable even during the week.

The new owners have made some great improvements to the overall condition of this course including better and more attractive landscaping and far better greens. Not a long course, however this course allows you to have some fun and really have ago at some of the greens.

Signage for this course also was a let down and requires urgent attention.

The 19th offers some great food and beverages and the veiws are certainly better then being in a office somewhere!

For a public course, Victoria Park really suprised me. The greens are really good, it is well maintained and rather picturesque.

Unlike a previous reviewer, I have never had any trouble with the pro's. The pro shop is rather limited in size and products, but if you are buying on the day, you can make do with their range quite well.

I haven't used a motorised cart yet, so I have done a fair bit of walking for a par 65, alot of it going between holes. The course layout can be confusing and a few more signs would not go astray to help first timers to the course.

As i said earlier, the course is really well maintained, and for such low greenfees ($24.50 on the weekend as of March 05), doesn't hit your hip pocket too hard. An attached driving range with lots of bays and a few grass ones lets you warm or tune up when you want.

My only real complaint would be as it is a public and cheap course, you get alot of "the public" on there. A group of seven on one hole were taking forever, a slow group of four in front of us didn't make an offer to play through, they weren't raking bunkers, filling divots or moving off the green fast enough. So try to get there in less peak times, and you will have a good round for few dollars these days. A short course with a long view definitely worth one game.

I played at Vic park in the last summer holidays and were pleasantly surprised with the maintainance of the course for what i paid(virtually nothing) the course may be short at times but its a great opportunity to work on the shorter part of your game.

The course is hilly so i recomend a cart.

The best part of the course was the views. for example the 10th where you look off and elevated tee into a gully then an elevated green with trees surrounding and many brisbane highrises in the backdrop.

It is probably one of the hilliest courses Iíve played and offers a few challenging blind shots. They do a decent job of keeping the fairways in good condition considering the amount of play that the course gets and the greens are fairly slow and flat but also in good shape. All in all its an enjoyable course and very good for the beginner. Experienced players may find it to be on the chip and put side and may want to look elsewhere if they want a challenging course.

A warning! If anyone should happen to hire a cart at Victoria Park, they should be very careful. My friend and I played there this past weekend and decided to hire a cart. We were given a very old cart that looked like it was on its last legs. When we finished our round a couple of very rude men working in the pro shop told us that we had hit a tree and caused massive damage to the cart and that we couldnít leave until we paid them for the damages. This was news to us because we had not damaged the cart in any way, and certainly had not hit anything. We argued with the mulish pair for about two hours to no avail and they ended up charging my friendís credit card for $300. We returned a few days later to plead our case again and they still insisted we had damaged the cart but ìbecause we seemed like great guysî refunded our money. Iím not sure if this is some kind of scam they run or if itís just a case of us being very unlucky, but anyone hiring a cart should definitely be wary. So, if you do decide to hire a cart youíll want to make sure you check the cart thoroughly before begining your round. You may also want to bring a tube of Vaseline to make it a bit more comfortable if you happen to get screwed like we did.
