Wagga Wagga Country Club (WWCC) measures 6054m Par 72 with five par 3s ranging from 123-213m, eight par 4s ranging from 307-400m and five par 5s ranging from 457-505m.

This course lies on the southwestern shores of the artificial Lake Albert about 5km south of the CBD taking Tarcutta Street / Lake Albert Road / Plumpton Road. The course, like Wagga City Golf Club (WCGC), sits slightly above the CBD at approximately 180-200m above sea level.

The course layout has medium sized tree-lined with kikuyu fairways which are thinly covered but quite green in places for early September. The medium-sized bent grass greens were recently cored and the teebeds had lush kikuyu grass.

There are 36 bunkers on the course with only 3 holes being entirely bunkerless – the 1st, 6th and 16th holes. I noticed some holes had fairway sprinklers with distances on them marked to the centre of the green, whilst other fairways did not.

Highlights include: the 472m straight 3rd (index 10) with a blind teeshot over a crest with OOB Nelson Drive on the left and a bern across the fairway about 20m short of the green guarded by 2 bunkers; the 355m slightly uphill 8th (index 4) which gently doglegs 30 degrees to the right from 200m off the tee to a green guarded by 3 bunkers; the 307m straight 9th (index 8) with 2 fairway bunkers 20m and 40m short left of the green guarded by another 2 bunkers short right and back left; the 213m slightly downhill 10th (index 3) with a greenside bunker right of the Par 3.

Some good memorable finishing holes include: the 505m uphill dogleg left 15th (index 5) has lake views from the fairway crest with 3 fairway bunkers guarding the dogleg corner with OOB homes on your left which then plays downhill from another fairway bunker 80-110m out from the green guarded by another 3 bunkers; the 379m uphill dogleg left 17th (index 1) is a shorter version of the 15th without any fairway bunkers and only 2 short greenside bunkers to avoid and the 180m 18th (index 7) which plays alongside the lake with 2 short greenside bunkers to avoid.

Just like at WCGC I also noticed there is a spare Par 3 hole behind the 15th tee. The par 4s were quite varied and challenging but I found the back nine par 3s were great to par and the par 5s offered a good variety with blind teeshots over undulating fairway crests with some OOB and bunkers to avoid.

Wagga is the largest city in the Riverina with over 50000 people with about 62000 people including the city local government area’s smaller towns and villages. Wagga is about 4.5 hours from Sydney but 130km (or around 1.5 hours) north of Albury.

Played here 5th September 2011 with social green fees now $30. I must agree with other reviewers and say WWCC has a tighter and better layout than WCGC with taller trees and much more bunkering than WCGC.

Having played all grass green courses in the Riverina, I must say the layouts and conditioning of WWCC, Cootamundra, Deniliquin and Leeton are amongst the best in the Riverina.

I recently played this course on a warm late afternoon in January. I was impressed by the layout, of all holes, and agree with a previous post that this Course is Wagga's best kept secret.

The tree lined fairways ensure that a wayward tee shot will result in dropped shots, but when finding the tight fairways, a good second shot is rewarded. I found the greens were excellent, in great condition considering the drought and true in line and speed.

Wagg Wagga Country Club is the premier golf course within the riverina area. Currently boasting 1000 members a great deal is being done to further improve a quality layout. A beautiful tree lined course with immaculate bent greens and all weather fairways, this course is well worth the trip.
