great course with well kept fairways and greens. Magic bushland setting with plenty of nature. Back nine was the stronger 9 with some great holes. I would come back to play again, best course i have played in canberra to date. have not played royal yet!!

A loverly golf course, and one of my favourites in Canberra. The fairways are always great to play off and the course is challenging but not overly difficult, with some beaut holes. Stop on top of the 4th green and look back into the ranges behind for some spectacular scenery.

I have recently played at Federal Golf Club and found that the staff was quite friendly. The course in general was quite good, the fairways were spectacular. I also enjoyed the scenery, with plenty of trees and quite a few kangaroos. Although, the one thing that was disappointed about, was the greens. Some I thought were very quick like the first hole but most of them were very slow. I found it difficult putting on such slow greens. Although besides that the course was challenging and beautiful. I would recommend Federal Golf Club to anyone come from interstate to have a game or any interested golfers in the Canberra region.

I really enjoy playing this course. It is the sort of course I like. Pleasant bushland setting located in a valley out of the wind with wide tree-lined fairways, and large greens all well maintained.

It is an enjoyable course that provides plenty of challenge, with some very interesting holes and virtually no two holes the same.

If you get the chance to play it, don't miss it, you will enjoy it.

Perched near the top of Red Hill, Federal G.C. is an undulating, bushland layout, that is designed in a traditional style. This is no more evident than in it's bunkering, which harkes back to a time when course maintanence was much more difficult, so green & bunker design was simpler.

The strength of the course is in it's par 3's, three of which are down hill. The 3rd, downhill & across a valley, is a lovely one shotter at 173m, but the 8th possibly surpases it. Only 155m, it's uphill to a green protected front & both sides by 5 bunkers. There is plenty of green at the back, so make sure you take enough club.

The 12th is probably the best hole on the course. Another par 3 of 197m, the green is below you, but rises up from the valley. Four bunkers, one at each corner, & the slightly elevated green, means that the shot has the be flown all the way. The prevailing breeze into your face makes this a great hole.

The par 4's are varied, but due to the fact that quite a few of the longer par 4's (10th, 14th) are downhill & the shorter ones are uphill, I found myself hitting the same clubs into most of the greens, which tends to give them the same feel.

Most of the par 4's & 5's are dog legs, which adds to the interest, & remember most of the drive zones are on a slight side slope. The fairways are generall not bunkered on the top side, so play high & allow for it.

The course was rated 68 in the top 100 (Aus. -2002) & although some renovations are taking place, I think they will struggle to hold that position.

The conditioning is reasonable, but the greens do tend to bounce quite hard on those short 30m pitch shots, although with fuller, harder spining shots the greens play quite soft. If you are use to playing those little wedge shots that pitch & release to the pin, you may have to rethink your strategy, as those shots will bounce & leave you 20 foot past the hole.

Federal Golf Course, with it's wonderful views over the Brindabellas, superb fairways and (very) challenging greens deserves it's by-line of "probably Australias best inland course". A genuine ACR 73, this course challenges golfers of all skills and can often play to something more like 75 if the pin positions are "just so". The greens roll true and the combination of slope, grain and undulations test your real putting skills - no hit and hope here. Both the 1st (500mtr par 5) and 10th (400+mtr par 4) holes take you down hill but can give you one of "those" scores. The 9th (index 1) and 18th (closing par5) provide no respite. A beautiful course with lots of cold beer and a teaching pro (Steve Tiek) consitently rated in Australias top 50. Make the effort - mmmmm, golf!
