Awesome course. Leads you into a false sense of being a walk in the park, but it can hurt you big time.

Staff are great, and the course having only 2 par 5’s will sort out a few people if they don’t play longish par 4’s well.

Off the back marks is tough, especially with wind. Not the usual wide fgairway resort course, so suck it up, and play a good suburban course with cool members.

I’ll be back.

Played this course recently and found it to be a challenge. It is a reasonably tight course, so you need to be accurate off the tee. There is not a great variety of holes, but it is in good shape, except for the smell from what seems to be a nearby sewerage plant.

The staff are excellent, and the course is okay and reasonably cheap. Won’t be in a hurry to play there again, but won’t avoid it either.

PROS

  • Well presented
  • Great staff

Cons

  • Smell
  • Not great variety of holes

A number of the holes are very wet and muddy. A few of the holes need some work. But having said that its a flat course if you don’t like hills and a descent lay out.
Greens staff are great – one guy took the time to tell me where my ball was. Thanks. Pro shop was friendly and helpful.

The 8th needed to be turned into a par 5… The 7th COULD be interesting with the fairway bunkers now… More Midweek members comps ie WEDNESDAY. Easier access to get ones name down for a comp… teeing off at 7am on a Saturday is great, but turning up to find the following time sheet is already full is NOT. Moving with the times, to an online sheet would benefit alot of ppl.. as it seems its the "older" crew who get looked after.

Wantima has limitations however the green keeper is doing a great job with what he has to work with. As is the new team in the pro shop – Tom Paul and Pam are a professional team and really adding value to the club. It is now time to see this professionalism reflected within the clubhouse- From the top down !
Its a shame as the area has quite a large catchment and It is not a pleasant environment. Suggest a major investment in a new layout of the clubhouse, at least entice members and guests to the club and a change of staff. Plenty of potential.

Very nice course, does have a drainage issue and was a bit wet in places but apart from that I really enjoyed the round, will definitely play there again!!

PROS

  • well laid out
  • reasonably priced
  • friendly staff

Cons

  • drainage

Nice tidy course with good greens and fairways. Some good long par fours which make up for only having two par fives. Course was a little heavy underfoot after heavy rain a few days earlier.

Drainage a massive problem

The course itself doesen’t have the best layout (only one par 3, 8 par 4’s on front nine) , however the course itself was fairly relaxing, and found it be a nice suburban course. A few holes seemed a little meaningless, however there were some nice holes, 6th is quite challenging, and the 13th provided some decision making.

However the one real negative I had with the course all day was the lack of distance markers. They had ’one’ marker at 135m, but if you were around lets say 70 to 120m, it made judging shots sometimes a guessing game.

My current presiding course is much more difficult, but it is a good nice to have a hit with the old man.

New member to Wantima after moving to the area. Have played quite a few times prior to this though. Course has been pretty dry, but the rain over the past few days will green it up. The greens have been pretty good of late. The 7th is completed and pretty good hole. Blind tee shot up the hill to a generous fairway only leaves a pitch into a green which is not quite 100%…. All in all, happy to be a member and the pro shop staff, Tom and Pam are very welcoming. especially to a new member like myself with my dodgy 27Hcap!! :)

played here on friday the 7th,as said in the last two posts the members and staff are very welcoming, Tom the pro there is more than helpful, the course itself is quite good the greens are firm with a nice bit off give in it, bunkers around the greens are ok, maybe a few on the fairways would make it interesting, the fairways themselves look a bit dodgy but are quite good to hit off, easy course to navigate around and will be making the long trip back for a game.

Had a game here yesterday and really enjoyed the day. Greens and fairways are in good condition. They are repairing one of the holes and have made a makeshift par 3 to compensate ( very dodgy, but it will be worth it when the repairs are finished).
Played at a comfortable speed the entire day and enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere wantima has.
Good value for money coming in under $50 for 18 and cart. Lacking a par 5 on the front nine, but overall the course is suitable for most levels. I have actually found Wantima to be very welcoming for social players and have managed to get a good tee off time on a couple of sundays now, while other clubs are completely booked until 1:30

Reading some of the comments, I am a member here and we have just changed pro’s.

The new pro is Tom Arnot, and he can play golf.

We now have outstanding service in the pro shop, happy people, helpful people, good gear to purchase, very well priced, it is great now, and I am not even exaggerating.

If you have previously been put off going back, now is the time to change your mind and get back out there,

Very poor course for the money – only challenges I found was trying to find somewhere to walk without being up to my ankles in mud. We have had a bit of rain lately but never expected a course to be like this. $29 for 18 holes – my tip – book your online tee time on here for Pine Rivers $15 – and drive a little further up the road – for a much superior course for half the price. Wont be returning to Wantima.

Played here recently on what apparently was a very busy Sunday. Loved the course and became aquainted with some of the water hazards quite unnecessarily as they should be easy to avoid. Staff were uniformly pleasant and went above annd beyond when we informed them that due to heavy traffic on the course we were unable to begin the second nine (which was actually the first as we had to tee off from the 10th). We were refunded the full cost of the 18 holes despite having completed nine. That is exemplary service. We shall return.

Play Wantima regularly on week days, I enjoy the course, I find it very well maintained & the continual upgrades to tee beds, concrete paths, rock walls etc.. help to improve my opinion of this moderatly lengthed course.

A lot of the reviews on here list the pro shop staff as rude or sour, yet in my experience they are always extremely friendly, and oftentimes quite funny as well. Maybe you just need to approach them with the right attitude.

I have played a few other courses in Brisbane and I keep coming back to Wantima. Its a reasonably sized course, with some challenging holes including a couple of nightmare Par 4’s. The greens are extremely good, if a little flat. The front nine is a little basic, with only a single Par 3, but the sixth hole is a tough one to make par. The back nine is well structured, starting with a couple of shorter holes, then winding up with some long Par 5’s.

The fairways are wide and reasonably forgiving, so the weekend warriors get a good run. It tends to be fairly quiet during the week and a little busy on weekends, but compared to Nudgee its pretty quiet. I recommend playing at Wantima enjoying this relaxed yet challenging course.

This course is a contender for the worst on the northside. The Staff are sour as a lemon tree, the fairways are not far of being grazing paddocks and the layout is boring. To make matters worse you are in for a 5.5 hour round in the sunday comp with a small field. I cant pay them any compliments for prizes either after i got 2 nearest the pins in one round and they were so generous that the prize was only ONE ball for each. Anyone who believes this is a good golf setup needs to visit bribie is, woodford, beerwah, or redcliffe just to name a few

The overhead wires are a bit of a turn off. So too are the pro shop staff. Other than that the greens were very quick and most of the holes were a bit of fun.

Have played here a number of times and agree with last reviewer. The course is good value for money but both the pro shop staff and bar staff are some of the worst going around. Even with its close proximity and value for money the extremely grumpy service means i wont be going back or considering a membership here next year.

This is a really good course with a lot of potential but the staff almost make it unbearable, The pro shop is not at all inviting with begginers or guests made to feel unimportant and the bar staff would have to be the most miserable bunch I’ve come across. This is a real shame because I feel that this is a really affordable + quality course, and one I could spend many a weekend at. Like most people I feel if I’m spending my time and money there they could at least make an effort?????

I think the course is dangerous and houses some funny OOB’s – They must have lots of confidence because some staff are rude and some are arrogant – the front door is the pro shop (first impressions) all I can say is dull and miserable service! The back door (19th) starts with staff – they seem to forget that members and guests pay their wages….

probably play here once a fortnight and it seems to improve slightly every time i play. the course offers a challenge for all types of golfers with some difficult long par 4’s and some reachable par 5’s. when thinking of signature holes, the 1st(395m par4), the 10th(124m par3), and the 13th(455m par5) all spring to mind, with the most picturesque hole probably being the 10th. It only takes a little bit of rain for the course to look really green and luscious, which is how it looks at the moment. overall a great course with some good challenges at a good price

Just played this course this morning, and I must say, the recent rain has made the course play very nice. The greens were in great shape, and the fairways nice and green. Nice to see some lush rough too, rather than just rough as guts weeds and dirt. Only thing I would say is that it would be nice if the leveled a few of the tees out, cause all golfers want a flat lie on the tee – not to be standing 2-3 inches below the ball.

PROS

  • Very green making good fairways and greens.

Cons

  • Some tee boxes aren't flat.

Played on this turf once with my social club. I probably won't go back there again because that place is infested with flies, probably came from the sewage plant next door.

Strange OOB stakes location e.g. 1st and one of the hole where its green is guarded by a small creek.

Overall -2 for this course.

This course has the potential to be better. I don't know whether it is lack of members/money or both it just is a bit tired. If you want a basic members course of reasonable length this is it. I would give it 2 and a half stars.

Measures Par 70 5766m from the back tees with 4 Par 3s ranging from 125-175m, 12 Par 4s ranging from 270-400m and 2 Par 5s ranging from 455-465m. Not too bad a course, but besides taking 6 hours to complete, with unnecessary waiting for 13/14 fairways to stop flowing like the Brisbane River, course is relatively flat and in good condition.

Hazards include sand and water (2nd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 9th, 10th, 13th and 14th). No real challenge of par 3s with the 175m 16th hole being the longest and the Par 3 10th being the prettiest with a water clearance very close to the green. Par 4s are all of good length and challenge the golfer to make par. The 6th playing like a par 5, speaking of which the Par 5s did not impress me. The Par 5 dogleg left 13th was probably the pick of the two with a creek in front of green (that later turned into a raging torrent) and bunkers behind the green. Greens were a little slow and undulating that make putts difficult to read. Fairways are trimmed close and are in good condition,..rough, I donít think there were any of significant length.

Played here on Tuesday 21/2/06 and paid $22 for a round of 18. Good value but round was ruined after waiting 2.5 hours in the shabby clubhouse for the 13th and 14th fairways to cease looking like Sydney Harbour. A brief 20 min downpour should not close the course as fairways turned into raging rivers, needs an irrigation system and a decent drainage, or better yet a large dam to catch that water! First time I saw something like that on a course before. Will be back if they fix the irrigation/drainage problem.

I live just down the road from this gem, and driving past the indecisive lay-up/go-for-it long par 5 13th, and the short, picturesque and bunker-protected 10th on my way to work every morning has me seriously contemplating 'sickies' most days.

Just getting back into golf over the last year or so, I find myself coming back here not just due to proximity, but simply because 85-90% of the course is in fantastic condition at the moment. A couple of the 'back' holes fairway lies are still a little uneven, but looking at that as more of a challenge than a deficiency is required.

The 1st tee is elevated with a slight dog-leg left and sets up your round with a degree of confidence, despite the thick trees lining both sides, it gives you ample room for error on your first shot. Both 9 and 18 are flat, immaculately kept holes that have both broken and made my rounds in the past.

But, my favourite hole is the par 4 6th. From my point of view it is the hardest hole on the course, and could easily be another par 5. Driving the gully would require at least a 250-270m drive to set up anything remotely like an attacking shot at a well bunkered green. A good day usually accompanies doing well on this hole.

In summary, a lovely course, and at $26 w'end and $24 w'day, the fees are manageable.

The day started when we drove through the wantima country club gates, music blaring and air-con pumping. I looked out the red-rockets window at the treacherous par five that had ruined so many golfing careers. I must admit I was a little nervous. Russel parked his fine piece of machinery in the Managerís Car Park and we strolled into the Pro Shop. After presenting our I.D cards we quickly ascertained that the back 9 holes ìwas the least busiest.î One of the blokes (who also happened to have the best throw in Queensland) got a warning about his board shorts. Luckily, one of my other mates happens to have a good reputation there, so before long we were on the infamous 1st hole.

ìAnd Up Steps Johnî was the galleryís cry. As it turned out, John confirmed his position in the big bombers club and claimed the first ìgreen-in-one trophy ballî which was a merry way to start the day. Retief also produced an impressive drive. Before long it was time for the likes of Lemon, Timmy and Billy Boy Junior to step up to the plate. Unfortunately they could no produce in the pressure cooker environment. For the record, the ìladies tee ruleî applied.

Putting was no different for Retief and John. The eagle soared in the sky after the pair nailed the 20 foot put. Real heart in your mouth stuff. ìIll put ya down for 10 aye,î was the comment made when Corbs, Timmy and Billy Boy Junior failed to get adequate scores.

Ah Wantima. A course of truly grand proportions. A forgiving course which accommodates the cover drives of James ìBilly Boy Juniorî Lynagh. Such cover drives are said to be reminiscent of the great Ricky Ponting. All in all a great course and only a short walk from Diggers Pies.

I was a member here for about 8yrs or so up to 2000. I had a game here a couple of months ago, and boy, has the condition of the course improved alot over the years! Maybe I was biased, but I believed Wantima had some of the best putting surfaces in the region, but it's conditioning from tee to green on some holes left alot to be desired. Since they have added fairway watering in most places, it now grows rough comparable to the US Open! A couple of my tee shots had wandered off the fairway - years ago, wouldn't have been any drama - but now, I found myself in 3-4 inches of rough which certainly made for some interesting decisions. Wantima is a short and flat course by modern standards, but it's real test lies with the wind and the smallish greens, compared with some other local courses. The prevailing breeze is usually a South-Easterly which really makes scoring difficult as most of the longest (& hardest) holes all play in this direction (1,6,11,14,15) With the new conditioning of the course - makes me wish I was still a member. Well worth a hit if you're around this neck of the woods.

The Wantima country club course has everything an intermediate golfer needs in a course. I first played the course in 98 and was pleasantly surprised on my return to see a much improved course only a few days ago. Starting with a long par 4 on the first, the front nine all though not terribly long is challenging all the same. Nice large greens throughout the course give greenkeepers the option of tough or relatively simple pin positions. The greens were exceptional on this visit and it is a credit to the course staff for the way the entire course was presented. The back nine is where I found most of the challenges to lie. A tough par 5 on the 13th followed by a long straight par 4 then another par 5 can make or break a round if the front nine hasnt already. In total the course has 4 par 3's, 12 par 4's and 2 par fives and is well arranged to have an even mix. Given the dry conditions in Brisbane at the moment it was fatastic to see green on all fairways and a club in top notch condition. Can you find better courses in Brisbane? Ofcourse you can but for 22 bucks midweek and gernerally nice staff and members, the Wantima course is a must for Brisbane golf enthusiasts. 8/10
