Warren Golf Club used to have 18 bent grass greens before the Macquarie River December 2010 floods ravaged the course. The damage during the floods to the course was so intense that all greens had to be re-sewn. There are currently 12 slow bent grass greens with holes 2-7 having black soil greens due to the flood damage.
The course has a winter card for play on the combined grass and black soil greens which measures 5850m Par 70 with four par 3s ranging from 133-148m, twelve par 4s ranging from 320-428m and two pars ranging from 481-487m.
The course has a summer card for play on the grass greens which measures 5110m Par 67 with seven par 3s ranging from 133-150m, nine par 4s ranging from 320-426m and two par 5s 481m in length. Holes 2-7 of the winter card have tiny black soil greens with dry bumpy fairways and are not in play during the hot summer months, therefore, some grass green holes are played twice to avoid the sand greens and dry hard fairway conditions during the summer.
Played here 1st August 2011 with $10 green fees for 9 holes and played the back nine (which is the same on both winter and summer cards) which measured 2635m Par 34 with three par 3s ranging from 133-148m, five par 4s ranging from 321-401m and the 481m slight dogleg left Par 5 10th. The back nine has all grass greens which play a little slow with fairway, green and teebox sprinklers and 3 bunkers.
Highlights include the 334m straight 11th with a bunker short right; the 401m Par 4 straight 12th; the 340m straight 14th with a bunker left guarding the front-sloping green and the 148m 18th with a 25m long front-sloping bunkerless green.
The course, unlike the town which is located on the Macquarie River, is bounded by Gunningha Creek which comes into play on the 357m straight 1st which has a raised grass green and the 336m slight dogleg left 15th which has OOB fence on the right.
The course has 5 short, challenging and well-conditioned holes (14th-18th) under the bridge on the other side of the Oxley Highway.
Warren has about 1700 people approximately 200m above sea level about 75 minutes north of Dubbo. Considering every club within 100km has black soil greens you have to travel to either Dubbo or Broken Hill to play grass greens, I’d recommend a back nine round here any time of the year.
Friendly staff and members and a decent clubhouse facilities too.
