Good review by NUFFIETHEGOLFMAN. This course can be busy on weekends, but I managed to play a very quick 9 after work starting at 430pm and there was no one to be seen.

Pro shop is well stocked. Just wished I could play the back nine more often.

I played 18 @ whaleback last tuesday and I would have to say, it was the most enjoyable game i have had in years. Maybe it was the company, maybe it was the quietness of the mid week round or maybe it was just not being @ work, but i loved it.

I agree with some the comments posted, it is not the longest or most difficult course i have played. Several p4;s have greens that are drivable if you have the accuracy and the guts. Over the last few years, the course has come a long way.

My favorite holes are: p5 3rd, p3 8th, p3 13th and p4 14th

I managed to play Whaleback Golf Course today, hitting of at 12.15 pm this afternoon. It cost $25 and I had a good chance to get a practice chip and putt in before hitting of. These facilities were very good and there was also a multi-story driving range with ball dispensers too.

With regard to the course, I found it reasonably easy and played comfortably to the ACR of 68, its a 5581m par 71. This course might be short and quite easy for low handicappers like myself, but the greens and fairways are well maintained to support good scoring. The pick holes for me were the par 5, 11th, 460m long and a genuine 3 shot hole, especially when played into the Fremantle doctor during the afternoon. This took some effort to par. Two holes I didnt par and found resonably long were the par 4 9th, 360m long and par 4 17th that was 380m long. These holes were doglegs left and right respectively and were rated 3 and 1 on the index respectively.

Despite lacking many bunkers, this course consists of elevated greens, some greenside and some fairway bunkers unlike Maylands Peninsula, which I believe plays slightly easier than this course. This is despite the fact that Whaleback is shorter and is easy to “Texas-wedge” yourself out of trouble to the hole if you miss many greens right or left. I was amazed at how easy it was to put onto the greens within a few feet from at least 6 greens on the course that I missed left or right.

First time golfers would love this course as it is affordable and easy to play, with little trouble to cause frustration. It has something to offer all levels of golfers and is why I’ll definitely be back for many fun times ahead on this good little course.

A nice, rather short course with well maintained fairways and challenging rough areas. The practise facilities are the best I’ve used, but as someone noted, distances can be hard to judge. Whaleback has an excellent series of practise greens for putting, chipping and bunker shots. Green fees are about par for Perth public courses, with buggies, clubs and carts for hire.

PROS

  • Some drivable par 4s and green-in-2 par 5s
  • Excellent practise facilities
  • Well maintained, consistent greens and fairways

Cons

  • Can be too easy for better golfers
  • Very busy at times
  • That water hazard I always hook into on number 10

I went to the driving range late at night. I have never been to a double storey driving range before.

The balls are dispensed through a machine near the driving range (great invention)

Its a lovely driving range but its hard to judge how far you hit the ball if you upstairs.

Maybe its a little to narrow.

OVERALL - good

This course is ideal for everyone. It has a driving range, putting and chipping greens as well as a nice bar and snack area.

The front 9 is ok for a quick round a loves the driver. However the back 9 is best.

Overall a nice course for 9 or 18

Whaleback (City of Canning) is your typical council course where you would play just to sneak in a quick nine or 18. It's about 15mins drive south from the CBD, and costs $16 for weekdays and about $20+ for weekends. The clubhouse/tavern has undergone a major facelift, and the proshop looks great now. Now, I look for them to get some good branded clubs in to top it off...

Single markers would prob not play on this course as it's quite short and boring, but at least it'll give them a chance to sharpen their short game. The greens are fair to say the least. It's a course I play about 3-5 times a year and whilst it's not overly challenging, it's okay. The course get's if fair share of local patrons, and can be quite hard to get on over the weekend.

The front nine is the shorter nine, and is generally regarded as the scoring nine. The back nine is a little tougher with a few tighter driving holes.

Honorable mentions are the 11th (par5) playing downhill off the tee, and uphill for second and third shot. Finding the fairway is no easy task off the tee. The 13th is a 160+ par3 which always play into the wind and is a slight carry over a pond.

Other than that, you'll probably only play this course if brought there.
