With the 157m downhill teeshot to the 15th green being out of play for about 12 months, the longest hole on the course the 531m Par 5 10th has been split into 2 holes: 397m Par 4 slight bend right 10A and 142m uphill 10B. Upon the completion of the new 15th and 18th greens Wyong will measure 6095m Par 72.
Wyong temporarily measures 5921m Par 71 with five par 3s ranging from 139-185m, nine par 4s ranging from 333-397m and four par 5s ranging from 449-475m.
Course has fairly lush kikuyu fairways and teebeds with wide tree-lined fairways. The small-to-medium-sized bent grass greens are soft and play sluggishly. There are 8-9 ponds on the course but only the 5th hole hazards come into general play, as all other water hazards are well off into the rough. There are 23 bunkers on the course with no more than 27 bunkers when the 15th and 18th greens are back in play.
The most challenging part of the course is the 3 opening outward nine holes: when they re-instate the Par 5 at 531m 10th which plays slightly uphill from the gentle dogleg corner to a small bunkerless green; the 389m slight bend right 11th (index 3) from an elevated tee with a red-staked pond far left from 180m off the tee to a 25m long front-sloping green with a bunker left; and the 390m slight bend left 12th (index 1) which plays uphill from 150m out to another front-sloping green with 3 bunkers.
Other highlights include: the 453m slight dogleg right 5th (index 12) with OOB far right over the trees and 2 red-staked ponds far left on your 2nd shot to avoid with a yellow-staked creek across the fairway about 40m short of the green with 2 bunkers shortside; the short 335m slight bend right 6th (index 5) with trees and OOB far right off the tee to a tiny green guarded by grassy mound short right and a bunker leftside; the 365m straight 7th (index 9) with a red-staked pond 265m off the tee on the left to another small green with 2 bunkers; and the 185m slightly uphill 9th (index 6) with a large bunker right which is by far the most challenging par 3 on the course.
For the first-time at this course and to score -4 through holes 16-18 reflects more on the course’s weak finish than me: with 1 bunker and 2 wide par 5 fairways at 16th and 18th the only challenge on the closing 3 holes is to block out the traffic noise from the Old Pacific Highway/Lucca Road intersection at the short 139m 17th tee. A little disappointing to finish on the weak closing 3 holes especially after the challenging opening 3 outward nine holes.
Overall, the front nine is the more challenging with all greens bunkered with a variety of holes. The par 4s have similar tee-to-green styles and the par 5s are not overly long and challenging. One positive is the new 15th green which is taking shape with bunkers and a good view from the clubhouse.
Apart from the 333m 8th (index 10) which doglegs 90 degrees left, all holes are mostly straight with gentle dogleg bends. The flat and fairly wide tree-lined layout with minimal hazards has no real challenges for the more accomplished golfers.
If you want the best course conditioning and challenges on the Central Coast with more sand and water hazards you should play at Kooindah Waters and Magenta Shores.
Course access is from the old Pacific Highway about 2km north of the Wyong CBD adjacent to the North Wyong Industrial Estate and the railway line which is on the leftside of holes 12-14.
Played here 13/1/2012 with $30 green fees. Nice clubhouse with friendly staff and members here.
Overall, Wyong has slightly better course conditioning than Toukley, but Wyong is nowhere near as challenging as Toukley.
