The front nine starts off to have you heading south overlooking the Pacific Ocean and on the other side Tuggerah Lake. The first nine holes are beach holes with magnificent ocean views with the 9th green only metres away from the main clubhouse by electric cart. The back nine have you heading north along rainforest and national parks, finishing with a challenging and interesting eighteenth (Par 5) that brings you home to a magnificent clubhouse.
This course has a good practice facility, consisting of putting greens, a warm-up driving range and chipping green with bunkers.

This course has improved with time. I have played it a few times at regular intervals since it’s opening, and i can now say it tests all parts of ones game.
The long grass around some of the greens encountered in the course’s early days has, for the most part, been removed and the short game options have opened up accordingly. Flop up a 60 degree wedge or bump a 8 iron along the deck, the choice is yours.
Firm, evenly grassed fairways ensured great lies and were sufficiently wide that truly bad shots received the harshest punishment, while the bravest drives opened up the best playing lines for approach shots to the tricky green complexes.
The greens were at great speed for a course that could have a 30 knot Nor’ easter one day and a 30 knot southerly the next. Unfortunately we played in the latter so the scores were not the best, but the fun level was still up there.
The FoH staff we encountered were friendly and the green keepers very respectful of golfers, all to a man turned off noisy machinery when we were swinging nearby.
Definitly a course that needs to be played a number of times to learn, but with a ISG tee time booking that is affordable.

So ventured up to magenta on a beautiful windless morning, perfect. The Proshop staff very friendly and great professional service. Lucky enough to play with some members who had local knowledge, (which was very helpful) and have been members since it was opened 5 or so years ago. They mentioned that the course has been made little easier in that time as the course has settled in and the rough has been cut back a bit to allow the higher handicappers a chance at not going through a dozen balls per game, that being said you still need to be relatively straight and know where to hit the ball for your playing ability.
The course design is beautiful, challenging, frustrating, joyful and rewarding for those who play smart, and as it is rated 74 those 2 extra shots come in very handy.
Get there and play, but don’t expect to shoot your handicap the first few times, just enjoy the experience!

This would have to be the best course in NSW. With the joining fee due to rise to $15,000 over the next month I would suggest you sign up now whilst only a $1,000 at present.I am told the course will go totally private come the end of January.

Measures 6305m Par 72 off the blue tees (5913m-white tees, 5164m-red ladies) with four par 3s ranging from 124-186m, ten par 4s ranging from 314-438m and four par 5s ranging from 474-550m.
Magenta Shores has been open for only 5 years and is the top-ranked course on the Central Coast and #28 in Australia rated by Golf Digest March 2010.
Course conditioning is superb from its undulating wide couch fairways and flat couch teebeds and smooth, quick, large and undulating bent grass greens to its large, deep bunkering. There are over 125 bunkers with several other sandy waste areas given the links course is built on a sandy base.

The par 3s are a little weak off the back plates but varied with the 186m 4th (index 10) with a southerly teeshot with 3 bunkers, the 135m 7th (index 18) with a northerly teeshot with 3 bunkers, the 165m 12th (index 15) with a westerly teeshot with 5 bunkers and the 124m 15th (index 16) with an easterly teeshot with 5 bunkers and the OOB Wyrrabalong National Park on the left – all par 3s teeing off with possible different wind directions.

Highlights include: the 364m straight 1st (index 8) with water left off the T to avoid with 3 greenside bunkers; the 523m 2nd (index 5) which doglegs slightly to the right with 8 fairway bunkers and OOB beach vegetation on the left T to the green with 1 bunker right; the 404m slight uphill 3rd (index 3) which gently turns to the left with 3 fairway bunkers with OOB on the left from the T to the green with 3 bunkers short; the mammoth 438m Par 4 slightly uphill straight 9th (index 1) with 2 fairway bunkers and another 3 bunkers guarding the 3-tier front-sloping green; the 392m straight 16th (index 6) with 5 fairway bunkers and thick vegetation on the left from the T to the green with 1 bunker right; the 361m slight dogleg left 17th (index 9) with 4 fairway bunkers and another 4 bunkers around the green and the 550m 18th (index 4) with 8 fairway bunkers over and around the fairway crest with another 4 bunkers around the green.

Despite its location between Norah Head and The Entrance sandwiched between Tuggerah Lake and the Pacific Ocean only the 5th hole has views of the ocean. Although on all holes you can hear the ocean.

Played here recently in the Sunday competition with $99 fees including a cart. The office and proshop are very friendly and helpful with my membership enquiries.

From the Wahroonga F3 on-ramp the course is about 60 minutes and am considering becoming a member here. Facilities are great and resort is very welcoming. Highly recommended for those who want to play a traditional links-style course.

The best course I have ever played. Felt like a true "The Open" style course.
Although I play off 22, and shot 104, Its a real test of your discipline. Play the layup and you’ll score well. Take a course guide or GPS and theres more than a few blind shots.
Found my self leaving driver in the bag for most of the course as I wanted to stay on the fairways. Bunker, and you’re looking at a bogie if not more.
We didnt play in the comp and would reccommend a social before doing so.
Maybe Im a glutton for punishment, but cant wait to get back.
Facilities were fantastic as well. Friendly staff all round.

I played Magenta Shores in June 2010 and what a magnificent track this was, will possibly rate it second now behind NSWGC out of all the courses I’ve ever played in Australia. No wonder that the likes of Nathan Green and Peter Lonard call this place their Australian home track these days.

I managed an 89 off the bat for my first time round off the blacks and now looking back on the round a month on, it still feels like I had to bust myself to earn every single shot that day.

We played Magenta Shores in fine weather but a strong southerly wind wreaked havoc for much of the day as my Dad and I struggled to notch up a decent score. Holes 1-8 we didn’t find all that picturesque to be honest, the 2nd hole – par 5 was a pleasure to play with the ocean on the left and the long par 3, 4th was a difficult long-iron shot and so the greenside scrub stole a ball from me. However, from the 8th tee onwards, the digital camera didn’t stop flicking until the 18th hole!

The par 4 – 9th hole took a drive, hybrid, 5 iron and chip to reach at 435m long, and then also 3 putted to reach the cup at the top tier. This would have to be the hardest par 4 I’ve ever played, beats the 15th at Secret Harbour into the SW wind and the 9th/18th holes at Kennedy Bay into a westerly.

Also the par 5 – 18th at 560m long into the southerly wind was a nightmare. It took me a drive, 2 x hybrids and an 8i to reach the front, followed by 3 more putts for a double-bogey 7. This also had to be the hardest par 5 I’ve ever played, beats even the 600m long hole at Glenmore Heritage in Western Sydney! These two holes were tough, reason I say is because I’d played 5 rounds in 12 days coming into this game.

Magenta Shores has some stunning contours, bunkering and undulations across all the fairways and is a tribute some of Ross Watson’s best work. It is one of the best links courses in Australia that you’ll come across, but is certainly not for the faint hearted. Keep the ball flying low and make good contact for every shot, because any sidespin at all and the heath/coastal marsh will swallow you up.

Any golfer should have Magenta Shores right up there on their list of course to play. It’s much more playable than The Cut in WA, however my advice for first timers is to bring plenty of spare pills. There are also some birds that like to "crow" about.

I played Magenta Shores 27/10/09 with changing weather and also golf fortunes. We started in morning sun with a drive into the centre of the 1st fairway. All good so far. Approach shot into the centre of the green ,2 putts and a solid par to start. A short cart ride to the second tee and a majestic view opens up over the course, district and ocean. It reminds me of the second tee at Gullane No1 in Scotland and Jennifer Hawkins – gobsmackingly beautiful. Then came the wayward shots and the course fought back. The rough and bunkers are brutal. The rain starting falling heavily from the 8th and my mates decided to stay in the clubhouse. Fortune favours the brave so I played the second nine my myself, in the pouring rain, with form like Tiger Woods, but no one to witness the effort. The the par 5 18th was a cracker into the wind. Driver, 3 metal, 3 metal and just on the front edge. I love this course! What a challenge. Include on your "Must Play" list.

I had the opportunity to play Magenta Shores recently for the first time. Unfortunately it happened to be on the 2nd windiest day this year, the Saturday after the big dust storm. I would like to play it again in better weather before making my final rating but that said it is a spectacular design. Magenta is a very demanding course where every shot requires precise execution or you are in trouble. Many of the fairway bunkers are brutal and most have unmown surrounds, 20cm high thick grass. They look terrific but stay clear or you will be sorry. I was lucky to have two members in my group which made working out some of the blind shots a little easier. If you turned up and played this course without someone with local knowledge or a very detailed course guide you would lose a lot of balls. Considering the extreme conditions I was happy with my round only missed a couple of fairways but still only had 25 stableford points!! If you don’t drive it long & straight here you may as well go home because there is nowhere to bail out. That I can see as the only problem with this course. The average or higher handicap golfer will not enjoy playing Magenta and therefore that will limit the number of return customers.

It has to be said that this is a bloody difficult golf course, no doubt. But if you can get over the fact that you probably are going to lose a few golf balls; you’re probably not going to shoot your handicap and you probably won’t get home in 2 on the par 4’s (9???) or home in 3 on the par 5’s (18!!) then you will certainly enjoy it!!

My comment on the length isn’t entirely fair because there are quite a few shorter and even drivable (off the gold, downwind..) par 4’s, but it is tough. The day we played the weather goods were pretty kind to us but it doesn’t take a lot of imagination to work out how it would be if the wind blew.

The design is an absolute peach, plenty has been said about the bunkering. I liked the angles available off the tee and the pros and cons of hitting clubs to certain spots.

Put it on your list.

brutal ..for first timers .Good idea to have a good look at all holes b4 playing. offline shots are basically lost balls. At one hole hit an iron over 200 mts with the wind and at the other my driver went just 140 against the wind. Greens are nice and big but quite tricky. Wanted to play another round the next day but could not as there was a comp .Extremely dissapointed as was not told when making a booking at the resort. Its like going to Disneyland but finding out that the rides are not available.

This place is going to be the end of the likes of Cypress Lakes. It is visually stunning and a real pleasure to play. It is a far better layout than Kooindah Waters as well, and although more difficult, I think it is more user friendly as KW simply has too much water for the average golfer.

Only qualm I have is that some of the fairways were a little patchy in parts, particularly the Index 1 par 4, but in general, I can see what all the hype is about. The bunkers are amazing and the undulating fairways are visually impressive.

Although in saying that, when I played Cypress Lakes last, there were rocks in the bunkers the size of golf balls and the moronic greens staff had waterlogged a few of the fairways (around 150m out), so I think its safe to say people will vote with their feet. The quality of the accommodation is excellent, and with a spa, and kids facilities, and THE BEACH, they are onto something good here. Basically, the facilities make Kooindah Waters look rather sub par.

I just hope they take a leaf out of the book of Bandon Dunes and make use of the additional land nearby and put in another course or two. Please, for the love of golf, get Tom Doak involved!!

Oh, and finally, they need to get some 24 hour security as some local redneck banjo specialist had gone onto the 3rd fairway overnight in a quadbike and thought some donuts would be in order. Such a shame.

Just played Magenta Shores yesterday and loved every minute of it from arrival to a lunchtime beer and lunch to finish after a great round. No Wind thank god as friends had said the wind is a killer. Lodgings were 5 star, staff super friendly and the course and condition just blew me away. I would be back once a month if the accomm prices came down a little as once you throw some flights in there it makes for an expensive weekend, I believe this is as good as a golfing weekend can get and all credit to the creators!!!!!

Tough but beautiful golf course. Challenging for women but very intertesting. I am glad I played on a relatively calm day as it would be frightening when strong wind blows.

Played the comp at Magenta a few days ago and really enjoyed the golfing experience. It is a very tough course if you don’t find the fairway. There is a good mix of holes and with the wind blowing (even though we weren’t playing off the back tees) it makes the course even harder and at times near impossible to find the fairway. The only pity is that you have to either stay or be invited by a member to play. I’m sure you will play the course better the second time. My tip invest in a course book and a sherpa to show you the traps!

Played Magenta Shores last week on the recommendation of Brett Ogle and loved every minute of it. I must confess that we were blessed with fantastic conditions – high teens & light breeze aren’t the usual combination apparently!! The course itself was in pretty good condition and i am sure you will play it better the second time as, even carrying a course guide and GPS, there are some hidden traps on blind shots you just don’t realise are there. I particularly liked the mix of short and long par 4’s as not all of us can belt two shots 400 metres. Bunkering, although it killed me more than once, was terrific as well.

Accommodation at Quay west was also terrific with three couples staying in the 3BR villa, a much better alternative to a room each and cheap as chips at $360 including breakfast for the night.

A hard course to add a review for as one either loves it or hates it. I am a lover though-this course is truly a masterpiece of golf course design, seemingly sculpted out of coastal bushland with apparent ease. The test of time will judge how this course rates amongst Australia’s top golf courses. It would be nice to see a professional event played here to see how the pros get on – this course can be very difficult for the average club golfer especially if the wind blows (which it usually does when you are right on the coast). If there is any advice a modest single figure handicapper can offer to players who have not played here before it would be to “keep it straight” especially off the tee as wayward shots will be punished. Other than that, enjoy the experience.

Finally, I must commend the staff – they really add to the entire experience.

Played Magenta recently, It is one of the best link styled golf courses iahve played. It is very challenging of the tee and around the greens, plenty of bunkers and tight fairways make hitting tee shots very accurately. All in all a very good test of golf. PS Just hope the seabreeze does not blow to hard.

Undoubtedly one of, if not the best links style course in NSW. The course is very challenging yet still enjoyable to play. I’ve played it three times now in varying conditions. It becomes a very different animal when the Southerlies come in, particulary on the Par 5 2nd & 18th. The clubhouse and facilities are also fantastic and I would thoroughly recommend a weekend stay as there is plenty to do for the wife or family who may not share your passion for golf.

What a tough course! I played only a couple of weeks agao and found it very difficult to enjoy my day. Firstly there was no information about where on the greens the pin positions were – until someone from the proshop drove out and met us on the 3rd tee and told us the system for the day on each green – two holes plaing unaware. Then there was no food & beverage cart on duty all day when the conditions board informed me & my wife that there would be. So we had to pull in and get drinks after 9, then lost out spot in the feild because a group of 4 members jumed on the back nine as they were members & informed me that we should have kept up to the group in front of us. This was a highly difficult task as the wind was blowing a gale all day & my wife (off 15) & I (18) struggled in the conditions & good luck finding a ball in the rough! The course is listed as a public access course – i dont understand this concept as the only way to play it (other than joinging the members who act like they own the course) is to stay in the very expensive accommodation, mind you it is very comfortable. My understanding was that a public access course was a course that anyone could play – not just temporary residents. The worst thing for us was the proshop staff. After returning the cart after a long day in the very strong wind and rude members we were abused by the proshop attendat as we had driven to our room to drop off our cart (some 600m away) straight after the 18th & not dropped it off and lugged our clubs back ourselves. This was a massive shock & supprise as there were at least 2 otehr groups behind us (still on the 18th – a brutal par 5), i then raised the issue with some members jumping in front of us and their comments – which was responded with “you have to abide by the time allotment for each group as stated before tee off”. That night we dined in the bar as the reorts premium restaurant looked like an RSL with bright flurescent lights & was chaging top city prices. The ‘weekend getaway’ cost us over $1,000.00 (golf, accomm, F & B) and we shall never be back. The property may be new but i would have though they would have had the basics right!

I am a member of Magenta Shores. Great layout, very tough for an average player. So many holes are a visual delight, and the par 3 4th is such a great golfing hole. Its a very exciting golf course to play.

Bunkers and rough are harshly penalising and superb for a links layout, and greens are kept at a reasonable condition (although unrepaired pitchmarks abound).

Here’s where I am annoyed. The fairways are simply a disgrace. It is so frustrating to see significant patches of grass grass dying, so many divots not filled, and stupidly designed cart pathways, leading to further grass deterioration. The course rule is “Don’t drive in the rough” as it is fragile, yet the fairways are dying, and bugger all is being done about it.

Don’t know whether its due to a lack of water, but there’s so much potential for this course to be a great golfing experience. At the moment, its grand bunkers, greens and rough, with patchwork quilt fairways which let it down terribly.

Once was 5 stars, now is 3.

Played magenta recently and what a great layout. Just a testing course with only a slight wind to make it even more difficult. A true test of golf. Great mix of shorter and longer holes, the shorter ones protected by a vast amount of bunkers. Not a course to play if you expect to play to your handicap. Like most courses you play for the first time it was hard, the second time it may be easier but I think maybe not. I would rate it as hard as brookwater. Thanks to steve for making the day possible and enjoyable.

This was my first time out on a true links style course and I enjoyed it enormously. The fairways were good without being great, but they will only improve in time as the course matures.

I can't remember a bad hole. Each wa sinteresting for it's own indiviudal character whilst remaining within the overall theme.

A decent course guide would be more than handy but this is my only negative about the experience.

As a member of the course, I have had the pleasure of playing about once a week since the course opened in August 2006. It is my first experience with a links course and I am loving it! There are some spectacular undulating fairways, challenging greens and never a dull moment with the changing sea breeze- and occassionally- gale force winds. I have been very impressed by the setting, the course and the friendly staff at Magenta Shores. I highly recommend the experience. The ladies tees are well positioned and the bunkers are cleverly placed to encourage you to 'go for the green'. The resort is also lovely and I can highly recommend the 'deep tissue massage'- for after the game!

Played Magenta with my stepdaughter who is a ALPG & LET tour player & who recently won the NSW Ladies Open beating a very classy field. It was blowing a gale in the afternoon, & without doubt is the hardest course I have ever played-even harder than Brookwater. Joanne{my playing partner- a professional} made the comment that it was approx. 2-300 metres longer than most courses & that the tees were to close to the back marks. Because of the wind factor, she was hitting in some cases 3 clubs longer than normal. On some par 4's she couldn't reach them in 2 hitting Driver & 3 wood. No signage or hole maps by the teesis a severe negative, it goes without saying that a course booklet showing distances & hole layout would be invaluable- we were told that they will be available at the end of Jan 07. Typical links course with all of it's vaguaries & bounces- for the average player -=h'cap 15-27 -to break 100 would be a mighty effort. I think it would be a delight to play when very little wind present- b ut I think that would be very rare. A sensational course, up there with the best of them but be prepared to think your way around the course- course management is vital. Staff were very friendly, course in excellent condition - A MUST PLAY venue. Good Luck!!!.

Played Magenta recently and found it to be a very good test of golf.

Luckily we were confronted with placid conditions because if the wind blows out of the south it will turn into a monster.

We were very impressed with the variety the holes offered with testing short par 4s to a mix of long and short par 5s.

Only a couple of critisims of the course. These are the Par 3 off the middle plates , to my mind, were quite weak.

It seemed the penalty for missing the greeens was to be find your ball buried in grass past your ankles. The average golfer will find it very tough to play from this grass, if you can find it.

A course guide is needed badly to navigate your way around. On the short Par 4 12th I hit a very good three wood over a hill, only to find the ball dead in the rough. a map would have shown that the fairway went left and not right as we all thought.

Thanks to Steve the Golf Manager and other staff for making it a good day.

Well worth a game there
