Eynesbury Golf Course

Melbourne, VIC | User Rating: Rate-4 (4.0) | Add A Review

Situated approximately 10 km south of Melton and 15 km north of Werribee, the major focal point of Eynesbury Township is the magnificently restored 1870’s Bluestone mansion which will serve as the golf course’s clubhouse for the stunning Graham Marsh designed layout that will be a true challenge to any standard of golfer. The heritage listed original sheep station homestead is being impeccably restored to its former glory and will also play host to the bistro, restaurant, spike bar and reception facilities.
The low handicap player will be tested by the course’s length from its championship tees. Importantly however, multiple tee boxes will ensure that the novice player will be faced with a less daunting length of course, ensuring that every golfer will reap a reward from an Eynesbury golf visit. Generous, wide fairways and attractive, fair bunkering is a feature of the Eynesbury layout, which opened for play in May 2007.

Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of suburbia, Eynesbury Golf course proved to be a great surprise. Although I played here a few days ago (in the midst of the Melbourne rain deluge), the weather was kind enough to spare our group of rain during our round.
The course is quite long, but relatively flat which allows for push carts to be used. However, I can see how a motorised cart may be necessary for some. The course itself was in great condition, with full lush green coverage on fairways with true and fast greens. The course must have superb drainage, as there was minimal signs of water pooling(other than some parts of the walk paths) to detract from the experience. I found the holes to be very challenging with some really long par 4’s! The Par 3’s were also quite long, with none playing less than 160m (blue tees).

A second visit is definitely on the cards…

PROS

  • Very good layout
  • Very good condition
  • True greens
  • Friendly staff
  • Challenging

Cons

  • A little far from Melbourne
  • Quite pricey to enjoy on a weekly basis

If you want a challenge, play Eynesbury. Very long course with wide open fairways with allowance for some stray drives. Fairways are good all year round and the greens are superb, especialy that bloody 17th double teired one. It will be even better once all the construction of houses has finished so you can get some cover from that swirling wind. Try not to walk this course as otherwise it will be a long day. I have played there before in a corporate day and they do an exceptional day of golf and the feed afterwards was spot on! Happy Hitting!

PROS

  • Long, Challenging course
  • Great greens
  • Wide open fairways
  • Very helpful people in clubhouse

Cons

  • 40 mins from Melb
  • Can get very windy
  • Did I mention the wind

Did not live up to the hype. Quite challenging but most holes you’ll use your driver off the tee. Very, very windy and the flies were a pain in the arse.

Great course, but boy does this place struggle once it gets busy. Tee’d off at 9am on a Tuesday morning just before Christmas. Forst few holes were OK but by about the 6th hole we were waiting for one, sometimes two groups to tee off. By the 14th hole, we had had enough, there were 5 groups on this par 4, one on the green, one of the fairway and three on the tee waiting. There was not couse marshalling until we made a call to the pro shop (which was only answered by an answering machine), they must have got the message becasue finally we saw someone!! Damage was done, after 14 we had had enough and left the course. We did complain and they said they would send out a voucher for our 3 players and carts for another 9 holes. Not sure weill take that up as it was just too slow. Course was OK, green had a lot of dints as it looks like those that play it aren’t regular and dont seem to care too much about the course. Fairways were OK and is a nice layout.

Played out at Eynesbury last week and loved the course. Not many playing (mid week) so no issues with time etc. Greens and fairways are in fantastic condition. Fairways are generous and the rough penalising the way it should be. Do yourself a favour and take a GPS or get a course guide as blind creeks are constantly in play. Beauftiful use of the old homestead for the clubhouse and proshop etc.

The only problems I have with it is the number of houses that are planned to go on the course and the price of their beer.

Do your self a favour and play it before too many houses are built around the course.

Played here last week and have got to say it is one of the best public courses i’ve played in VIC (even though it is in the middle of nowhere!). Fairways in great nick, greens were true and quick and tees were in immaculate condition. Course staff were friendly and ensured all groups were moving at steady pace. If you get a chance, get down there and have a round… you won’t be disappointed at all.

Played it last Saturday and I can report that they have the marshalling issue sorted. In fact, the marshalling was great. We managed to play through 2 groups even without the assistance of the marshall, but there were lots of slow 4 balls out which could have made the round fustrating if we hadn’t managed to play through.

My biggest recommendation is to get out there now before the surrounds and in fills have been completely occupied with housing. I like it the way it is now, rather than what I imagine it will be in a few years time.

Highly recommend you give it a try if you get the chance, it’s worth the drive.

PROS

  • Requires some thinking around the course (course guide mandatory)
  • Risk and reward
  • Multiple tees for all golfing levels
  • Course condition and bunkers

Cons

  • Long walk and flies (even in late April)
  • Wide fairways and big greens
  • May become too densely populated with housing in the future
  • Middle of no-where (although, who cares once you get there)

Played here again today for the 4th time. Immaculate all round, played in an easy 4:15 on foot and didnt get held up once. There were only 20 cars in the car-park on a saturday 9.30 am???? Not sure where else you can play such a fine track at $50 or less. Highly recommend.

When people talk about hidden gems, Eynesbury is the first course that comes to my mind. This Graham Marsh designed course makes the golfer think long and hard about shot selection. There are numerous creeks/irrigation ditches that pass through the course, as well as strategically placed bunkers and an abundance of long rough. Therefore poor club selection or errant shots are often punished. That said, good shots are rewarded.

This course has always been well maintained. Greens are a good, honest speed and the fairways let the ball sit up nicely. The friendly staff, roaming drink cart and historic club house/pro shop add to a very enjoyable golfing experience.

played for the first time the other day.
Great course, tremendous layout, better than the growling frog.
Shame it is the middle of NO WHERE.
It is definately a cart only course on a warmish day.

I played Eynesbury on Monday before the Melbourne Cup and thought that it was brilliant. Very challenging track in magnificent condition and excellent value. You definitely need a cart, as it is a huge walk, their hire clubs are Callaway Big Bertha’s so that suited me down from Sydney. The course designer did an excellent job in the layout and it is well staffed from what I saw. Pro shop staff were good and the whole experience was enjoyable. Will definitely be back and recommend to all.

Played here a couple of times.

Its still maturing but its already a great layout.

Its a stern test a couple of the holes would be very difficult to navigate your way around for beginners or less skilled players. I think this is a bit of shortcoming for a course that is a resort style. For the average to better player its great track.

great course, alot of potential there…. should look after their regulars alot better… pricing needs to be looked at quickly..especially when young kids are involved…apart from that one of the best courses in melbourne for the public to play on…...

Eynesbury, I agree with the some of the other posters. The course is generall in great condition. However, the lack of any urgency from the marshalling staff turn what can be a great day of golf into frustrating , never go back event. Not seeing a marshal on the front 9 , we finally caught up with on the tenth and they had little to no understanding of how to get groups around quickly. The other strange attribute was the plague proportion of spiders. Whether or not it was a on off event the number of webs in the rough, in the breeze was disconcerting to say the least. Having to dig out spiders from your bag at the end of play wasn’t what I had in mind on the 19th. Also a word of warning do not under any circumstances get these guys to organise a hospitality event for you.

Played Eynesbury on the 28/04/08. Great course and challenging from the back tees. Alot of trouble if you do not land on the fairway as the rough is pretty thick. Greens were being cored so they were not the best to putt on, but the round was discounted. Some of the bunkers can do with a little more sand. Overall, great course and has a lot of potential to be one of the best public cuorses in Melbourne.

PROS

  • excellent condition
  • plenty of water so it will always be green
  • lush fairways

Cons

  • Bunkers need more sand
  • Rough can slow play down when the course is busy

Nothing bad to say about the course, only negative is the young guys that these courses get to run on the weekend, booked a large group of 20, 2 pulled out so we had 2 groups of 3, to speed the day up due to another group booking we had a few groups tee off as one BUT finish the hole as 2 separate groups, dont see the major problem in this considering we have groups in front and at the rear and no groups at all behind the last group.

Also disappointing to spend over $1000 for the group and have the pro promise a donation of a polo shirt then recind the offer as he is offended by a few guys doing the wrong thing. Very petty but must be noted for other social groups looking to book.

No one course assistance from employees for slow play and really frustrating with the attitude of employees, you have a great product but a few of you need to go back to some basic customer service skills training to improve your attitude and professionalism.

Played Eynesbury for the first in late March 2008 on a very windy day, the conditioning of the course was without equal to any public access course in Victoria and the layout was very challenging and enjoyable. For $45, this course is by far the best value golf you can find in Vic. My only two complaints where the length of the primary rough didn’t allow at times the finding of your golf ball and on the day we played we found on our turn around to the 10th tee 3 groups that had been placed in front of us.

Eynesbury offers a uniquely ‘Australian’ golf experience, in terms of the aesthetics and general setting, particularly for guests from overseas.

The interesting layout calls for significant course management in the face of varying weather conditions. Course conditioning is typically of the highest quality.

Single biggest criticism is the lack of golf management. Eynesbury is crying out for a permanent course supervisor / marshal. Given the quality vs. price equation (excellent and <$50) this is already a VERY popular public access course. So it should be. Being a championship layout though, it has not been designed for its typical customers to play from the plates. Couple this with the number of groups sent out in pairs and the enemy of good golf (slow play) looms large very quickly. Given modern carts are the standard, it would make sense for the clubhouse to communicate with players that are holding up the play. This does not occur. Faster groups should be encouraged / supported to play through. This does not occur. Of 8 rounds in the past 18 months, 3 have been between 5-6.5hrs. Yet to play a round in 4hrs. The excuses for this have worn thin. This is a savage blight on an otherwise sensational golfing experience.

Completely agree with the suggestion that Eynesbury has the potential to be the best public access course in Melbourne. Make this trip. It is a terrific golf experience and good value for money.

Do yourself a favour and either pack the sureshot GPS or purchase a course guide. There are a couple of blind spots and the strategic placement of a number of hazards can catch the uninitiated by surprise. You’ve been warned!

played this course today for the first time – from the back tees. Windy day, played to handicap (12). This is a really nice course, with terrific conditioning and a nice element of ‘quirkiness’ ( eg second shot on 10, dramatic 2 tier green on 17, the odd semi blind shot). Its problem lies in a routing that is largely forced around what will be an enormous housing estate, so there’s little sense that you’re actually on a golf course. it really lacks atmosphere and what is there appears artificially enforced on what is basically pretty crappy farm land. that will change over the years as the housing develops ( although i’d question its viability as a housing estate but that’s another story). It also has enormous potential to be …’slow’.. if players continue to search the (overwatered) rough for their balls. irish golf should apply. a good addition to golf west of melbourne. i’d be happy to go back, occasionally, but wouldnt include it on a mates golf trip itinerary, as better options exist out of melbourne.

Very nice course considering it has only been open 7 months. Tough rough which made for very slow play but fantastic fairways and greens. Some blind shots that end up with your ball in a creek. Played off white tees which seemed to take most fairway bunkers out of play. Lots of flies.

PROS

  • Beaut fairways and greens

Cons

  • Tough rough for the average golfer

A top new course in great condition. The fairways and greens were particularly impressive, and the long cut of the rough is extremely punishing. A good challenge for golfers of all levels, with some holes requiring some clever club selection off the tee. Definitely one of Melbourne’s top courses!

This place is great. Probably the best public course in Melbourne already, although just about the toughest too. We walked it and played it from the back tees. A 460m par 4 was a challenge. It took a while to get around as it is pretty punishing if you miss the fairways. That said, fairways are wide where they should be and hazards and bunkers well placed. Greens roll great. I will definitely be back. Reasonably priced too.

PROS

  • Greens and Fairways were great for a newish course.
  • Staff were terrific and very friendly
  • Plenty of ball washers, bins and sand at just about every tee.

Cons

  • Sand in bunkers is almost like brickies sand. Overnight watering makes it very 'claggy'.

Played this course on a beautiful 25 degree day (the flies thought it was a nice day for golf too). This is simply the best public access course in melbourne, get out there before everyone catches on. The course is in brilliant nick with the fairways lush and the greens perfect, 3 cuts of rough make it a fairly challenging round for the wayward hitters. Well bunkered both around the greens and on the fairways. a failry lengthy layout will challenge long hitters.

Very nice course – much like growling frog. Great fairways and greens. Holes give plenty of interest and options to lay up or take on bunkers etc. Can be a bit difficult for first time players as there are no hole maps on the tee and without a course guide ($10!) some water hazards and sloping fairways were unsighted from the tee. Good course overall but 5.5 hours for 18 hole far too long given the hour or so out there. For that reason, not sure I will be back.

26. Metal50 | Rated | 04 Jan 2008 | Add A Review

A really lovely golf course. Unfortunately on the day I played it play was too slow, 5.5 hours for the 18 on a week day (had a few balls whizzing passed us from the group behind in their frustration, not that we could play faster ourselves) . There was no on-course supervsion, although the pro told me most days they have someone out. Part of the issue may be that although the fairways are generous, the long rough means you see a lot of ball-searching going on. If/when this is cut back the course may play faster.

If they can sort out these course management issues, it will become a fun place to play. It’s sure to become a highly-rated course

Fantastic! Highly recommend to all golf lovers. Tees, fairways, greens are immaculate. The way the tee structure is set, bunkers are ALWAYS in play. 4 tee positions for differing skill levels. Played off the blues, bunkers always within the 220 – 250 metre mark off the tee. Rough is similar to Growling Frog when they first opened…very thick and heavy. If they follow the trend of Growling, this will no doubt be cut back to improve times to play a round. All staff very friendly…as were the flies!!! Hopefully, the green fee structure remains the same long term…$45.00 Very reasonable price considering the immaculate conditions of the course. Going back again next week. Suggest all golfers get onto this course. Will no doubt be rated in the top 10 public access courses next year.

Wow….wow.

I struggle to find superlatives for this course. Its currently ranked 35th in Australia, despite only being open for six months or so. A year from now I think it will be ranked much, much higher.

This is as close to the perfect course as one could imagine. We played it for the first time on the weekend. I can tell you it was howling a gale, and rain most of the time…hard. But we all loved every minute of it. Give it a good day, and I shudder to think how good it would be.

Played 9 holes here for the first time on the weekend, absolutely stunning course. Everything from the Undulating fairways, challenging greens and Bunkers, and the quality of the fairways/rough was great. Creeks were challenging as were the bunkers on some holes.

In regards to AJD100542’s comment about Bins and the lack of sand stations, I think that this has been resolved, as there was a bin on every 2nd or 3rd hole, and the same with the sand.

We started play about 3:30 so there wasn’t an issue with slow playing in front of us. I think the fact that this has just opened and many people haven’t heard about it makes it a great course. Will be heading back this weekend to play a full 18, I would advise Carts as it is a rather large, and spread out course (as there will be housing established between the course)

PROS

  • Friendly Staff
  • Excellent quality greens/Fairways
  • Course Layout, challenging all the time

Cons

  • My only Con would be the Flies (was a hot day and the wouldn't leave us alon)

Nothing bad to say about this course apart from the construction and large trucks driving about everywhere. I think the course was fantastic. Had some really nice challenging holes. Clubhouse was great.

THIS COURSE IS BRILLIANT. By far the best course within 40 k’s of the city, long, entertaining, in great nick and a really brilliant golf course. The greens are true and undulating, fairways fantastic, manicured paths and 3 cuts of rough. If you haven’t played it get out there before it it highly publicised and becomes impossible to get on.

32. ajd100542 | Rated | 25 Jul 2007 | Add A Review

On the weekend I played Eynesbury golf course, which definitely has the potential to be the best public course in Melbourne and surrounds. The greens are immaculate, the fairways beautiful and the bunkers treacherous. With 443 m par 4’s and some challenging par 5’s this is a course that would suit the bigger hitter, although hidden creeks and carefully placed hazards means that this course can be tamed by the more accurate shorter game.

There is not much to say in the negative for this course, although, there where a few management issues that need attending to. For instance a public access course that only has sand refills for your bucket on the 1st and 10th hole is going to torn apart by the average golfer, I ran out of sand on the 4th and then played through 5 holes without really being able to fix a divot, also finding a bin on the course was tough, and some people may use the rough for this option, (although there are always the few that will do that anyway). When we turned up on early on a cold winters morning after an hour’s drive to get there, we where informed of a delay of upto 1.5 hours due to the frost, and with no coffee and no warm food, it was tough to swallow. No one can help the weather, but a simple phone call would have helped.

In saying this the staff where very friendly and ready to help, and obviously proud of the course itself. And they did give us some range balls during the wait, as by then there was not much else they could do.

To cut a long story short, the golf course gets 5 stars, the support staff, also get a good rating, the management however do not fair as well. Get onto this course quickly, as once this course is finished, I guarantee the price will go up and the availability down.

As an afterthought, they also seemed to have a greater interval between groups teeing off, which means that the flow of play was better. Not sure weather this was just the day, or the norm?
