Played here a few times recently and really enjoy it. The course has tonnes of water hazards and bunkers and really makes you think where to hit it. It rewards good shots and punishes bad ones. The rough has been cut down significantly from a year ago and is now very fair, very few lost balls. It has a good mix of long and short holes with par 3s ranging from about 180m down to about 120m. The par 4s also have a good variety with a couple of very hard holes over 400m with water crossings, and a couple of 3 iron, wedge holes. Is starting to get a bit soft in some fairways due to tha amount of rain we have had, but is still very playable.

A challenging course with lots of water and well placed bunks on the fairways and around the green. If you think your way around the course you will score well but you will get punished for a way would shot. I’ve played this course twice now and the first time the greens didn’t hold but now if you put the ball in the air most hold well. The rough in places is very long if you going in there hit a provisional cause its gone. Overall enjoy round to be had.

i am a member at yering and it is a farm!!!! the rough is is waist high in some places and if you hit just off the fairway you better hit another as the odds of trying to find it are zero! the bunkers have no sand, the greens dont hold at all and around of golf takes 4 hours 15 to 5 hours because knowone can find there ball!!!! and a drive that can hit the middle of the fairway and can end up in the water is just crap!!!

the design of the course is for perfect golf who in the hell plays that week after week! a golf course that hands out a pentalty for hitting a good shot is poorly designed, golf is meant to fun but you ask any member is the golf course fun to play and the answer would a big no!

this course could have been so much better very dissapointing

I played here a few weeks ago and found it to be very good quality overall.
As previously mentioned the layout of the course is good but you can bet there will be a bunker to hit over/into depending on your drive.
Probably should not have played off the blue markers the first time around as it made the course and many drives alot trickier. however the white visitors tees were with the womens tees so thinking that would be no good we went the blues.
There are a few holes where you cannot really see where your drive is going to land, either in between bunkers that look to have no room or over rises that obscure your view.
Overall i would say that it is a good quality course and worth your time for a look.
The only complaints i have are that the greens were too hard and not receptive to approach shots, and the obvious no trees and plenty of wind factor.
They have planted trees just got to wait until the get bigger is all.

Played here on 3rd January
Great looking layout but as previously mentioned a bit of a contrived set up.
They need to do something to the greens they were lifeless, did not roll or break and down hill putts did not roll or run out. The newer of the 27 holes should probably not be open yet with 2 of the fairways clearly below the condition you expect a course to be in when paying $55 for a round. A couple of these holes have ridiculous landing area options like a par 4 where you rally have to lay up and hit about a 180 to 200 metre second shot and a pay 5 where there is really no option or enticement to attack with your second shot.

Cons

  • too many bloody flies
  • 3rd nine has holes that are in poor condition

I played the Homestead course at Yering Meadows with a friend on the 29/12/09. The front nine was the new nine, aka holes 19 to 27. I really enjoyed the layout of these holes. Hills and water were used to great effect and some of the views of the Yarra Valley were spectacular. The condition of the grass was very good for a young course, aside from the fairways on the 26th and 27th holes, which were very patchy.

After nine, I felt like a bite to eat and went to the pro shop in the hope of buying a sausage roll and drink. I was then directed to purchase these items from the restaurant/café. When I got into the café, I had to wait for literally five families to order their three course meals and drinks. I thought this place was a golf course. Serve me within five minutes, let me re-join my group and I’ll be happy. It doesn’t look like they care about the golfers at this place. Note: BYO lunch!

After storming out of the café without a sausage roll, I smashed a drive down the 1st hole. After about five holes into the back nine (holes 1 to 9), started to realise something; there was a fairway bunker in the middle of the fairway on virtually every hole. Just where the average golfer will land his/her drive, that is where the bunker will be. The 8th hole compounds this phenomenon by not only having a bunker in the middle of the fairway, but by also having water on the other side of it and a slope leading to the water.

Overall, I found holes 1 to 9 to be poorly designed and somewhat monotonous. Very similar to Kingston Links in my opinion.

If you live in Melbourne and you want to play some proper golf at a course roughly the same distance away, go to Eynesbury.

Just joined on the below mentioned introductory offer. Am please to have signed up, the course is good and new 9 holes set to open this saturday.

In time, the course will only improve as rough areas grow through, but the fairways are going extremely well, the bunkers are good (although personally, I think they’re are the ugliest bunkers I have seen, a bit of a let down to the courses asthetic appeal), and the greens are pretty good although I pray they soften over time, too many approach shots bounce hard and roll off the putting surface.

All in all, you get more than what you pay for here I believe, but improvements would have to made to get me to fork out the 2K joining fee once my introductory membership concludes – but that’s not for 2 years so I’m a happy chappy, go down and check it out and you will be too.

PROS

  • Yarra valley views
  • Course condition - although time still needed in some areas
  • challenging
  • PRICE!!!

Cons

  • Ugly, ugly, bunkers
  • greens too firm

I recently played Yering Meadows with the view of joining and was surprisingly impressed. The course is better than most and the new 9 opening soon will add greater variety for players.

The course and the clubhouse are great and certainly comparable to some of the better courses nearby and afar. I am a regular player at Heritage and Sandhurst and have played at Southern, Riversdale, La Trobe, Heidelberg and Kingswood over the last 6 months.

These are all good courses and I would rate Yering in the same league, without the price tag! What stands out for me is the practice facilities which are second to none and all within a stone’s throw from the clubhouse.

The driving range is large enough to accommodate everyone, practice/warm up nets, putting greens, short game area and bunkers. Some of the best views in the Yarra Valley also make practice a pleasurable experience.

On the down side whilst the course design in my opinion is first rate the course is still relatively young. The roughs are sparse and some of the fine turf areas still need another year but all and all in great condition for only a 1 year old and the future looks promising. I have just joined on an Introductory membership which is a great way for anyone wanting to transition into club golf without the upfront entrance fee.

There is a special at the moment that works out to about $66 per month for 6 day rights. If you live within ½ hour drive you can’t go wrong.

This course is purported to be a ’member’s course" and we are assured that none of the fairways run off into the waterways. That’s not my experience, nor is it the experience of a number of my fellow golfers at the club. It’s not uncommon for higher handicappers to lose 4 or 5 balls a round to the water. There is arguably water on 17 holes. Admittedly the course is immature so it should improve over time, but what appear to be fundamental flaws are likely to remain. There are numerous blind shots with run outs just beyond view. The greens don’t hold but balls hit short of the greens to accommodate this situation more often that not run off into or towards bunkers. On a risk reward basis the course can be outrageously punitive for mid handicap golfers.

The whole course is exposed to signifucant winds within the Yarra Valley and this simply compounds an already challenging course. I’ve played at may allegedly tough courses (Barnbougle, The Dunes, Eynesbury, Moonah Links, The National etc.) but none of them have the capacity to hand out such undeserved punishment as this one can. Golf should be a challenge, but also fun. Yering is always a challenge, but very rarely fun.

Yes, golfers need to be adaptable with their playing style, but when luck plays such a large part in the outcome of a shot it becomes exceedingly frustrating and off putting. I’ll happily revise my views in 2 or 3 seasons but at this point I’m disappointed with where the course is at after 13 months of operation. Yes, the club needed to move from the old location, but with a clean slate and so much land members could have expected something a little more user friendly. I’m reminded of Ranfurlie which has matured over 5 or 6 years, so my fingers are crossed.

I am currently a member of Croydon GC and am impressed with our new course. It is not a difficult course by any means, but on about 12 or 13 holes water comes into play and club selection needs to be well thought about, both off the tee and on fairways. It has appoximately 65 bunkers with most of them well stategically placed. With the drought, the rough is struggling a little bit and an errant drive into it will most likely not be punished and can be easily played out of. The new clubhouse is magnificent and has all the facilities that can be found at most other private clubs. Overall, an enjoyable course to play on and club to be a member at.

PROS

  • Supurb fairways
  • Challenging greens
  • Great clubhouse
  • Great views of Yarra Valley

Cons

  • Lack of thick rough means errant drives or other shots don't get punished
  • Constant shots fired from Gun Club next door to our course are heard on Saturdays
