St Andrews Beach

Mornington/Bellarine, VIC | User Rating: Rate-4 (4.5) | Add A Review

International renowned golf course architect, Tom Doak, has designed this classic 18 hole ’links’ style course on this unique property just 80 minutes from the centre of Melbourne.

Located in the famed Cups region of the Mornington Peninsula, the first course, the Gunnamatta, officially opened in late 2005 whilst the second course (Fingal) is scheduled to open late 2008.

The Gunnamatta course is a Public Access course and features some truly dramatic holes and the careful use of natural hazards. Big scale undulations, combined with creases, bumps and hollows are very reminiscent of the ancient coastal courses of the United Kingdom.

The layout is challenging and visually spectacular with demanding second shots to well placed greens often framed by natural amphitheatres. Craggy Tom Doak style bunkering is common on many of the holes and helps to add the course character that people are starting to ssociate with a Doak designed golf course.

Played here on 16th February, what a ripper of a course, challenging but not to hard for the average golfer. Greens and fairways excellent. Worth the effort to go to but recommend you hire a cart as there are some holes with a decent walk between green to the next tee. Will look forward to coming back here in the future.

Played StAB 06/01/2013.
A ripping course. An absolute gem.
Visually stunning, immaculate condition from tee to green.
Loved the look of the course, particularly the bunkering!
As mentioned by others, the fairways are wide enough that the high marker can still enjoy themselves. If you do end up in the rough it will do nasty things to your score but you can still find your ball (usually).
Greens were a little inconsistent speed wise, but beautifully presented.
Just WOW!!!!
Not too worried about the lack of club house facilities. They had cold beer and a nice deck to sit on and reflect.
Can’t wait to play again!

I played St Andrews Beach on 1 Jan 2013 and found it a very enjoyable track. The architecture of Tom Doak is quite impressive, with the terrain’s natural hills and valleys used to great effect to create a visually stunning course. Many of the greens are set in natural ampitheatres which are attractive to the eye and allow some liberties for slightly off-line approach shots.

The fairways were generously wide which gives some respite for high handicappers that are a bit errant from the tee. The rough is sparse enough to make finding a wayward drive not too difficult, but the wispy foilage ensures you are punished for your mis-direction as you can usually only manage a short-iron recovery shot back onto the fairway.

The fairways, greens and tee boxes were in immaculate condition. My only criticism of the course condition was that the greens were running quite slow, which took some getting used to.

Whilst the course is first class, the amenities do not meet the same standard. The pro shop and surrounds are no better than what you’d find at a suburban municipal cousre. For a meal and a few drinks after the round we headed into Rosebud because St Andrews Beach lacks a clubhouse.

PROS

  • Visually impressive.
  • Course in pristine condition.
  • Generously wide fairways.

Cons

  • Lacking off-course facilities.

Played the course this morning. What an awesome track… i would have to say the best course i have played. Surprisingly forgiving actually as the fairways were wider than i expected and the rough was reasonably thin which meant you could actually find your ball (and maybe even have a shot!). The greens are extremely tough – no such thing as an easy put. i was lucky to be playing with a couple of regulars otherwise i’m sure i would have added another 5 shots to my round as there are plenty of spots you dont want to put your ball otherwise it will roll 100m from where it landed. overall a sensational course, i will definitely be back. i would have given it a 5/5 but for quite a few spots where divots had not been replaced on fairways

PROS

  • Quiet
  • Stunning
  • More forgiving than expected
  • Very challenging / risk-reward

Cons

  • Too many slack golfers who hadnt put sand in their divots!
  • Too far away from my house! Otherwise i would be here every weekend

I played here on Friday 27th Jan 2012. The place is just amazing, this was the 2nd time I’ve played it but the 1st was years ago when it opened.
It was bloody hot and it’s a killer of a walk but I loved it, every hole was just a pleasure to play.
the playing surfaces were in reasonable condition, but the layout is another thing all together, I think the best down on the pennisula and one of the best in Melbourne.
Wish I was there now.

Played 18-12-2011

Just a cracking golf course. Most people can only come up with one criticism and that is that the 14th is trying too hard. I don’t agree. I love it.

The 3rd and 10th holes are outstanding. The framing of the 3rd green makes you want to hit an outstanding shot. Then you get up there and realise how friendly the green is.

The 13th is extremely long (off the back) but I think a wonderful design as the green is bowled into an amphitheatre and receptive from many angles for a long iron or wood.

For me however, the highlight is the 18th. A glorious golf hole. Take the drive on and then hit to a picture perfect green set in a natural amphitheatre.

I played St Andrews Beach whilst I was in Melbourne for the Presidents Cup and would recommend playing here. The course is a perfect example of Mornington Peninsula Links golf. A great thinking course where you can’t just grip it and rip it.

I also played Moonah Links Open and without doubt would go back to St Andrews Beach in a heart beat as the course condition is fantastic at the moment.

this is a top shelf course. Clearly within the top 20 in the country and in my view it sits above most of the melbourne sand belt for design quality (only RMW and KH are ahead of it for mine). What i dont understand is why it’s being allowed to be the apparent home of cart golf ( I saw no groups other than my own walking it when I played it recently ) and why we golfers treat it with so little respect (divots unrepaired, bunkers not raked, rubbish everywhere). I also worry about its viability. We played here on a pleasant saturday recently and it wasnt exactly chockers. Suggest play it while you can, but please look after it…!

Also played Sat 11th in the back tee challenge (shot 80), in what turned out to be perfect golfing weather. The sun was out and the wind was non existent ….. surely a first for the Mornington Peninsula.

The course itself, as the previous reviewer noted was in perfect condition despite being the middle of winter. Being located down on the Mornington Peninsula, it is truly a year round course.

The fairways were firm with good roll on drives, and the greens while firm and reasonably quick, were evenly paced.

The pin placements on a lot of holes …… are diabolical.

The pins aren’t necessarily near the edge of the greens as they don’t have to be to cause you angst.

There are so many subtle ridges, swales, and slopes on each and every green, it is a greenkeepers delight in working out just where to dig the hole, as they have so many options.

Any putt over 4 feet in length, on any one of the 18 greens, and you have some sort of slope to contend with, which makes it a great test of both the flatstick, and your nerve.

This is of course, after you have worked your way through the maze of fairway bunkers, greenside bunkers, and the numerous greenside swales.

Miss the green by a foot or two, and you could end up 30 feet away as happened to me on a couple of occasions, where you are then faced with a huge mound to either chip or run up, with very little green on the other side to work with.

The bunkers … well they looked to be in pristine condition, a nice coverage of sand and not compacted by recent rains etc. I never hit out of one of them though, as I managed to steer clear of them pretty easily (I was hitting them straight for a change).

Some of the bunkers though, you could hide a Volkswagon in, they are that deep and foreboding, so you do need to be very careful as they will quite rightly ……. penalise you that one shot.

St Andrews beach is a great mixture of holes, both very long, and short …….. it’s also very scenic with lots of elevated tees, and wide open fairways that beckon. It really is a wonderfully designed golf course, and it is always in pristine condition.

STAB is also not as busy as most other courses in the area, so you get the feeling when playing it, of having it all to yourself … and what could be better than that.

Having played it several times, and now in all conditions (this time it was sunny and calm)I’d highly recommend it.

It is wild and wooly and a huge test when the wind or rain get going, and it is a joy to play in calmer conditions.

To truly appreciate this testing golf course though ….. walk if you can.

Played STAB again on Saturday 11th June 2011 in the ’back tee challenge’ and it was a real treat. The course condition was excellent for the middle of winter and from the back tees the course is a real handful and pretty much a driver for me on all the par 4’s and 5’s and I also hit a 3 wood into the 4th (played 197M into a breeze). I measure a good golf course on how the layout stays in my memory and I could remember every shot I played on every hole (I did have a good day with a 78). Lots of long and short par 4’s so if you drive it well you will be rewarded. The greens were holding and putting nicely with some nice slopes and some subtle ones. The one complaint I have is the time it has taken to get the results out and the score into golf link, apart from that it is a great golf course. And anyone who says it too hilly should take up a different sport, golf is for walking and it should challenge your endurance and it shows who is mentally strong at the end of the round.

This is a cracking course and in my opinion better than many of the more famed rivals in the region e.g. The National (old and beach), Moonah(open).

The course was in great condition (April 22, 2011), particularly given that this place has been open and closed in recent times.

It’s a hard walk so be prepared for that. If you’re not straight or your partners aren’t then you’ll need many balls as the rough is unkept(which I like).

I rate it behind Dunes and Legends but it really is a cracking course.

Played here last week in twighlight and just managed a full 18 before it got to dark.

Beautiful course, very picturesque and an abundance of bird/animal life and on some holes the complete silence was wonderful.

If you play here, its probably a good idea to get a cart as i wont be pushing my buggie around again.

Fairways were nice and wide but very deceiving in length so it pays to know the distance to a bunker. If your not on the fairway then your in big trouble as the tall grass was extremely punishing and some of the bunker lips very imposing. I got to the par 5 1st hole in 2 shots…infact went over the back, however there is a hole toward the later stages of the 18 that is rated a par 4 and despite 3 big hits was only able to make the fringe. Perhaps the wind played a part in this but it should definately be rated a par 5.

Greens were very fast but i think could have been in better condition

Its fair to say i didnt play my best round here but it is a very nice course that greatly rewards safe consistent play..but then dont they all. Clubhouse isnt fancy at all but has the essentials.

Staff were friendly and gave us a few tips which add to the experience.

I played St Andrews Beach for the first time recently.

The elevated tees provide a great view of the course. And as a player that hits fairly low off the tee, I found that it was possible to gain an extra 20m or so off the drive.

Although I hit fairly low, I was able to just get to the top of the ridge on the 13th. Local knowledge would definitely be handy here though, as well as a lot of other tee shots on the course as we found ourselves guessing where best to aim off the tee a few times.

As someone off a higher handicap, I found the fairways fairly forgiving as they are wide enough off the tee that you should only find the rough if you shank the tee shot, or top it completely as most of the holes have deep rough from the tee to the start of the fairway.

Some complete numpty either before us or on the evening before must have been wearing metal spikes though, as there were great spike imprinted chunks on a few of the greens. As for the greens, there was a real interesting mix of two paced greens and some greens running faster than others which made the course that little bit tougher.

Although myself and playing group only went in about 7 or 8 bunkers, they all had about 1cm of soft sand on top of solid / compact sand so that your club bounces off the harder stuff undeneath. We could only assume the bunkers hadn’t been maintained recently which was disappointing.

I only lost 2 balls on the 1 hole (14th or 15th I think). Anyway I always have one shocker per round!

As others have mentioned in their reviews, the clubhouse is fairly basic but that didn’t bother us in the slightest. They sell beer and now have a bbq area with tables & chairs as well.

We paid $65 for the round, I’m unsure if I would pay this much again to play this course. It is a fairly nice design, but some of the holes are just stupid/trying to be too hard. I appreciate other than following each group around and checking their footwear that staff can do little to halt idiots with metal spikes chopping up greens, but for courses $60 and up price range I would expect things like the bunkers to be soft sand and really playable. If I found a deal for under $50 then I would play StAB again though.

PROS

  • Great scenery / Wildlife. Even saw some Kangaroos
  • Fairways are quite easy to hit from the tee as they are fairly wide
  • Basic clubshop / clubhouse. Doesn't need to be anything fancy.

Cons

  • Slightly overpriced
  • Bunkers in poor condition
  • Some holes i.e. 13th trying to be too hard

Played the course again last Friday and enjoyed every minute of it. Can be pretty forgiving off the tee on some of the par 4 and 5’s and provides several options for differing abilities.

Great layout and would love another par 5 in there. Fairways and greens are in superb condition and have enjoyed the wet weather in Melbourne.

Always love playing the par 4 third and the 18th, great approaches into pretty spectacular greens.

PROS

  • Greens and Fairways
  • Challenging
  • Rewards a good drive

Cons

  • Another couple of par 5's

Played the course last month. Absolutely fantastic. Course conditioning immaculate and design most impressive. What they would give for a bit of cash to complete the package with a good clubhouse and perhaps paving of many paths.

Demanding and long layout that is rewarding of good shots and certainly punishing for those that are a bit wayward.

Can’t wait to play the layout again. Only downer on the day was the less than friendly staff who it all seemed a bit of a chore for.

Played here last Friday, my first introduction to the famous Peninsula courses. Having only started playing golf 6 months ago, it was always going to be a pretty daunting challenge. The course is in immaculate condition from tee to hole. Straight hitting is most definitely the order of the day, as both the rough and sand can be punishing. I have rounds at Moonah Links (Open) and Portsea lined up this week, and can’t wait to compare all 3.

Wow – what an experience!

Played the course yesterday (Sunday 06/02/2011) and after receiving a incredible deluge when we go the course, the fairways, greens and bunkers were in fantastic condition.

Having played Barnbougle Dunes recently, I can say that this is my favourite Tom Doak course (waiting to play Cape Kidnappers!). Being a high handicaper (20+), I found the rough difficult to play out of but not impossible, unlike BD. Found plenty of balls throughout the day to make up for the Bridgestone E6’s I had lost.

Being a TOA member, I will look forward to playing this course four more times this year!

PROS

  • Interesting layout
  • Condition of course
  • Pace of play

Cons

  • Needs a property clubhouse/cafe
  • Distance between holes
  • Ninth hole does not lead back to club house

Played here just a couple of weeks ago. The sun was out but it was quite gusty at times. It was my first time here, so my Golfshot GPS thingy majig came quite handy. Having said that, i think its hard to score well the first time out.

Its a great looking course, very challenging with fast and true greens. The pin location on such a windy day left a little to be desired, but thats nit picking. If it wasnt for the wind, i think i could come here every week.

PROS

  • Very picturesque course
  • Good mix of long and shorter holes

Cons

  • Almost unplayable in even moderate winds.
  • Too far from Melbourne

Played Sunday 5th Dec 2010, the weather was almost perfect with a light breeze and sunny and warm. This was the second time I have played STAB and it was a much more enjoyable time with some knowledge of the course. With big wide fairways and excellent greens this is a real treat to play. the one complaint and I have this at all public access courses is SLOW play, the groups in front even in carts held our 4 ball up considerbly and its not hard to marshall but once again it is left to annoy the paying public! The lay out is excellent but I thinks it needs the other 2 par 5’s to give it more variance because the par 4’s just start to morph into each other as the rounds goes on. The par 3’s are fantastic and the 2 par 5’s are a treat. Good values for money and I will be coming back for the back tee challenge next year.

Played in late October 2010 and was really impressed. The course is so well maintained with fantastic greens and a really enjoyable layout. Definitely don’t overlook this course in favour of some of the others in the area. The fringes around the greens are what really got me they are so well manicured that I think they are the same as the greens just cut a little higher.

Nice and quiet and definitely worth the $59 I paid. Later that day I played Moonah Links the Open course and would have to say St Andrews comes out on top for me

PROS

  • Natural feel of course
  • Bunkers are great
  • Greens
  • Cost

Cons

  • Little bit of a walk from the pro shop to the course
  • 9th hole doesn't come back to course and no refreshments stop for those walking course

Course in great condition.
The fairways are nice & lush.

Well… what a weekend out on the Pennisula. Survived. Just. :)

Will give a write up of the rounds themselve in my handicap thread, but thought I’d give a wrap up of SAB.

This. course. is. brutal. in. the. wind.

Straight up though, it is a brilliant course. Open, wide and exposed. It is forgiving from most tee shots but the approaches demand attention and thought.

More sand than the middle east and they have teeth. Big teeth.

Fairways had just been treated for some weed infection, so had a few yellow patches but on the whole were very good and consistent. Not too many flat lies from them but there wouldn’t be on any course down that way.

Greens were fantastic and true. Some thought were almost ridiculously small for the target they are, the first being the worst culprit. The saving grace is that the surrounds and fringes are easily puttable and plenty of times was putting from 10-15 off the green with confidence.

Layout was phenomenal and a true test. A real top notch course.

I personally loved the clubhouse. I don’t need a big members hoity-paloity clubhouse where I need to feel like a part of higher society. It’s about the golf and only the golf. Don’t need anything more for a pay-to-play course.

I loved the rough being brutal. I think me and my mate put about 7 balls in there over the round, and only one came out.

But there were a few drawbacks. I thought the first was a little stupid with its approach to a green you’ve never seen before except from 500m away. If you play it for the first time, you really are hitting and hoping. The 14th is just a stupid hole. Pointless and just try to be hard. And I don’t get these Par 70 courses. I just think it should be 72 for me. Plenty of options to get the other 2 shots onto the card.

And for $49 for mine a bargain. And at $79 good value. Take lots of balls, a coat and don’t get out your brolly. You’ll look like Mary Poppins. Just get there though.

PROS

  • Layout
  • Condition
  • A true test of every part of your game

Cons

  • The 14th. Trying to hard.

This was the second time I have played StAB and it was as good as the first time a year ago. With all the turmoil that has been happening in the past year, thankfully the course quality has not suffered one bit.

From the first tee to the 18th hole, this course throws a new challenge at you with doglegs, blind shots, elevated tees/greens and false fronts. If you throw in a moderate wind, you really are in for a fun day. And even when you are on the dance floor, you can’t relax as each green looks like it has been hit by an earthquake with undulations on top of undulations.

Bunkers are exactly like bunkers should be (e.g. with sand!!!) and the rough truly is nasty. But the fairways are wide and forgiving so if you end up in the wilderness, you really only have yourself to blame.

Is it better than the other 15 quality courses with a 10km radius ? Yes in the majority of cases but until the facilities are upgraded (practice areas, proper clubhouse with bar etc), most punters will probably go somewhere else which is their loss. A big thank you to the new owners for keeping the course open so future players can enjoy this true golfing experience. Hopefully the word spreads and this is the beginning of a bright future.

I played at St.Andrews Beach for the first time on 2/9/2010. I read all these past reviews and had a couple of people from my golf club praise it. Our golf club included it on their syllabus as our original course was closed due to the rains we’ve had over the winter.

This course gave no indication of the rain as it was firm under foot and the greens were still rolling quite quickly. (Especially on down hill putts)

This course is "out and back", so as GPJ says in his review, stock up on food and drinks before you leave the club house. This has been addressed by a chap coming out in a cart with an esky with drinks and food during our round. The problem is that on occasions when you may need a drink you may not see him. We used carts as we got it included in the deal and I’m glad because there is a lot of walking between greens and the next tees which included a lot of up and down hill.

Bunkering was amazing as the sand was very consistent but they appeared to be cut out of the ground and had that rustic unfinished look about the steep faces.

Although it has a "temporary looking" clubhouse this course can match any of the other neighbouring courses for condition and asthetics. I’m sure at certain times of the year and in certain conditions this course could be a monster and very difficult to play to your handicap. There appears to have been some recent grading of cart paths but if you didn’t know where you were going they seem to go all over the place.

The only downer was one green on the back 9 having the hole right on the front and on a ridge. If the approach putt was short of the flag it rolled back off the green by about 10 to 15 feet. Past the hole and your next putt was gone if you missed the hole. God help players if this had been in summer and the greens were quicker.

Overall a very enjoyable experience and one I will jump at if I get another opportunity to play again.

Played St AB’s again today . Adron75 ,Pinghitter and Vectors understand this Course!
In benign condtions the Course is a treat. The front nine is not long but i rate it superior to the highly regarded B’bougle. The back nine loses little in a comparison but the merits of 13 , 14 , 15 might generate the most debate. The 13th in a strong N-Westerly is a little too penal, especially as the hole "asks" to be played from the back tee.
To spell it out 2, 3 , 6 ,8,10 , 11 & 18 are some of the best golf in the Country. For mine they equal or surpass the best of the holes at The Dunes.
In the free draining and lean, limey soils of the Rye region i see greensides , fairways etc being damaged by carts(turf loss and compaction). Sadly, Carts are to golf what jet skis are to a day at the beach. Yeah, a complete lack of etiquette and basically doing nothing for the Course .Get to St AB’s on a weekday when carts are less in evidence. Naturally winter fairways are dormant and poa annua is noticeable . Lies however remain mostly excellent.
Camillo and Adam in the Pro shop acquit themselves with enthusiasm and courtesy . Any one with a love of Golf will want the St Andrews Beach Course to mature and prosper.

Played on Friday in cool and very blustery winds. A very good layout, with lots of variety in the holes, and wind direction ever changing making club selection vital. I’ve never hit a four iron into a 140 odd metre hole before in my life, but now I have. The greens once you get there are as undulating as the fairways, and much firmer, so putting in the wind is tricky and challenging. Each tee seems to be elevated, so a steep descent is usually then counterbalanced by a lot of hitting up hill. There is some distance between most greens to the next tee, and a lot of uphill walking for your legs to get used to as you hike upwards to the next tee, so with a couple to go the hammy’s were starting to feel it. While it is a very good course to play, the ameneties (lack of a decent clubhouse) let the place down somewhat compared to other courses in the area. There is also no sign of the clubhouse after nine, so be prepared to load up your buggy or cart pre-game.

Loved everything about this course. Would have to be in my top 3 courses that I have played. The overall design is fantastic with a few standout holes as well as many good to very good holes. The only difficulty we found was the walking, I wish we had hired carts by the end of the day. As a couple of the older guys in our group were really struggling to finish the last couple of holes.

StAB is one of the best public access courses i have played, it has been reopened for over 2 months and is fully available to the public to play! The layout and design of this links is awesome, with you having to use every shot and every club you have in your bag! I had an up & down round from birdies to triple bogeys, lost 2 balls and that all happened on the opening 4 holes. still managed an ok score but it was a higly enjoyble and an awesome exprience! and like the previous reviewer we got on for $49 each inc. cart aswell, an absolute golden deal!

Played here yesterday and was really impressed with the design. As soon as you play the first hole you can tell this is a quality course.

Slightly in disrepair, but that was to be expected after a lengthy closure. Course layout is challenging & really makes you think about tee and approach shot placements.

As previous ppl have noted, bring some extra balls if you are prone to roughing it. Grass is really really really LONG!

Managed to get on for $49, incl cart, sleeve of Nike one-tour balls and a cap.

Good value!

PROS

  • challenging course layout

Cons

  • No tee markers or signage

Best course layout i have ever played. Forget the fact that there is no proper club house or practice facilities..just play it and thank the golfing gods that it is there for the public to play.
In a couple of years when this course has had time to find its feet and get the facilities it needs, it will easily be the best overall course on the penninsula.
Hire a cart if steep climbs dont suit your legs.
Just remember to take your own esky and bbbq for after round drinks and food, take a few spare balls (The rough can get nasty) and go left on your second shot on the first green…when you play there you will know what i mean!

PROS

  • Superb layout
  • Great condition
  • Excellent value ($49 with some free shit using the online tee times)

Cons

  • No real clubhouse

Could be my new favourite course. Fantastic layout, great challenge, greens and fairways in good nick, as with above review felt like a great golfing experience. Paid $69 to play without a cart which is more than I like to pay and more than can afford to pay regularly but I left feeling like a received good value. My Friends were not as impressed; the 8 balls they each lost probably didnt help. They agreed the course had some spectacular holes and was in good condition but were unimpressed by the hike to the first tee, no practice green, no access to the clubhouse from the 9th green to get drinks or food, no liq lic yet so could not get a beer at end of round. At this stage the ammenities are very basic at best. They won’t be back until ammenities are sorted out maybe not at all for $69 + cart fee (they wouldn’t walk it again). Me, I would. For me the golfing experience overcomes other shortcomings.

PROS

  • Excellent layout, good course condition, very challenging but rewarding to good shots, public access

Cons

  • Clubhouse, no practice green or nets, no liquor licence, can't access clubhouse from 9th green

Played here 4 weeks after re-opening as a pulic course.
As you walk to the first tee, still not having seen any of the course you can be forgiven for thinking "where have the pro shop staff sent me." Then you walk out onto the first tee and suddenly you realise you are in for some serious golf for the day.
Right from the first hole you are challenged with massive bunkers blind shots to the green and very undulating fairways.
The condition of the course is fantastic in all aspects and will provide some challenges for even the low handicappers i am sure.
The tee area’s are visually impressive from the word go.
Did i mention bunkers? When you just have to dig a hole and you have ready made bunkers you can expect plenty on the course.
I found it to be a challenging yet very worthwhile experience.
highly reccomended to everyone but take a few spare balls.

Absolutely the best course I have played in Australia. And 39 bucks after noon outrageous value after 4 pm at 22

Brilliant design spectacular teeoffs. The course is designed so that you completely lose yourself in golfing heaven.
Tom Doak designs courses so that minimum manipulation of the ground is used. Greens lie with big sandunes on one side so you dig a hole and there is the bunker. If you miss it the other side you have a nice grass area to play safe.

As I said an unbelievable golfing experience. Truly had to pinch myself that I was playing this course for under 40 bucks.
A must to play
