Hamilton Island Golf Club

The Whitsundays, QLD | User Rating: Rate-5 (5.0) | Add A Review

Designed by champion golfer, Peter Thomson, the par 71 championship Hamilton Island Golf Club on neighbouring Dent Island measures 6,120 metres (6692 yards). The only championship island golf course in Australia, the course has been designed to challenge all levels of golf enthusiasts, from resort guests to professional golfers.

Given the changes in course elevation; restricted landing areas and the ever-present breezes will provide a definite challenge from the back tees and enjoyable resort golf from the forward marks.

The course is designed as a series of holes strung along the ridges and played across steep valleys and the course layout works with the landform, with generally broad fairways taking the “line of least resistance”, avoiding the steeper, more sensitive areas.

The par 71, 18 hole course features two distinctly different nine hole circuits returning to a central clubhouse with panoramic views of Dent Passage and Hamilton Island. The outward nine holes are a more compact layout around the centre of the island and the inward nine are strung out along the ridges to the south.

The island’s natural and rugged beauty, together with its mountainous terrain affords stunning 360 degree views across secluded coves and beaches to adjacent passages and islands, and the mainland beyond.

I played this course last week the day before my wedding. The course is stunning the staff are friendly and accommodating. We were alone on the course or at least I think we were. The course overall was in perfect condition. If you don’t hit straight you are in trouble and will go through a lot of balls. We were told by the course pro not to look to hard for our balls because of snakes, we sorta kinda didn’t listen and found a bucket load to A grade balls. Overall the course is difficult but it was the most enjoyable golfing day I have ever had. By the way I went around in 92 and I was stoked!!

I played this course in August 2011. Surely it must be one of the world’s most spectacular golf courses. You access the course by a 10 minute ferry ride from Hamilton Island and the club house sits atop a hill which gives great views out over the Whitsunday Passage.

There are some tricky holes made even tougher by a stiff breeze which waits to push your ball off the fairway and into the coarse rough just off the fairway. I paid several penalties for lost balls, when tee shots hit the fairway and then rolled off the fairway into the rough.

The most memorable holes are definitely on the back nine. The par 3 14th, with fierce winds and a long carry over native bushland is as tricky an iron shot as you’ll find. The 15th is a great par four which runs downhill & into a stiff breeze, you’ll be best hitting something which keeps low here. Another distraction, when I played this hole, was the pod of humpback whales passing through the passage. The par 4 18th, hitting down the hill & with views forever is a great closing hole.

I thoroughly enjoyed the course, though it was one of the more challenging I have played.

PROS

  • Wonderful scenery
  • Challenging tee play
  • Great designed course

The most amazing views I have witnessed from any Golf Course in Australia – and I would imagine it is up there with the most beautiful golf courses in the world. It is also one of the most challenging courses I have ever played as well. Although a relatively short championship course – it is designed in a way that makes it play a lot longer than what it actually is. The day I played (April 2010) the wind was up which made it extremely difficult and I lost a number of balls into the thick rough. I can see this course just getting better and better as it grows into itself over the coming months and years. Glad I got to play it before it has become too popular.
