For a small country town, Ayr boasts a lengthy, finely manicured 18 hole golf course that is suitable for golfers of all levels. Fairways are lined by mango trees which other than being tricky to play out of, are also a good home for the swooping plovers that live at the course. A thoughtful feature is the numerous water coolers and shaded huts spread throughout the course. Ayr can get tropical so this is very handy! Holes of note would be the 193m par 3 11th and the dogleg par 4 16th where the direction of the fairway is difficult to determine from the tee. $21 for 18 holes is great value and a good opportunity to have a round of 18 an hour out of Townsville.

Well decide to go down to Ayr from townsville last friday for a quick 18 hole.

What a great little course….obviously it’s not to long but to my suprise I was able to use driver quite regulary.

There are a good a sortment of par 3,4 and 5’s with many require some serious thought before going for it, greens were very slow but I think they may have been left a little long before cutting for the weekend comp…I shot a 76 with a dame double bogey of the our last hole the 9th par 3…but other than that had an awesome day….!!!

Also when we rocked up we were all shocked to see Karrie Webb down on the 1st fairway having a practice with what looked like her coach.

Staff were very friendly and reminded me of my home track of Broken Hill with there country attitude.

Anyway ded=finately worth the drive down from Townsville and will do again soon.

They are rightly proud of their Karrie at Ayr and should be proud of their course also. The fairways were well grassed, with plenty of variety and decent greens.

Scoring well makes a course more memorable so I found this course challenging without being too daunting for a 20odd handicapper. Mango trees everywhere so stay on the fairways, they are harder to get out from than gums.

Beware of the hidden little lake, I won't tell you where and spoil the surprise. Managed to get 18 holes in after the ladies comp before dark so thanks for the hire cart. Will play here again next time through.

The Relic.

Visited Ayr Golf Club in June 2003 - Excellent service from the staff at the Pro Shop. The course is very well presented with a good layout.

Met a couple of the local junior members who were a credit to their club, friendly and polite. A very enjoyable course and well worth a round.
