Links Hope Island

Gold Coast, QLD | User Rating: Rate-4 (4.0) | Add A Review

The golf course at Links Hope Island is an 18 holes traditional “links” style championship course designed by five times British Open champion Peter Thomson and the team at Thomson, Wolveridge and Partners. The course has been given a course rating of 74 by the AGU.

The layout and design of the course is reminiscent of the great courses of Britain and Ireland in the “Links-style” tradition. Primarily the course consists of two loops of nine holes the front nine starts off to the southeast in an anticlockwise direction. The back nine heads off in a southwesterly direction, finishing with an interesting challenging two holes bounded by the non-tidal lake. The front and back nines are separated by an extensive practice facility, consisting of putting greens, driving range and chipping green with bunkers.

The driving range is unique in that it takes the concept of a driving lake, complete with target greens with bunkers at various distances from the practice tee. This area provides a spectacular view from the clubhouse. In various positions around the back nine holes of the golf course, chipping and putting courses are available for residents use.

They should be ashamed tagging the word ’links’ onto this course….degrades all the great links courses around the world.

You don’t go to Paris for pasta, why try and sell links golf on the Gold Coast??? Go to Brookwater for a decent round of golf…..even Lakelands is better….and that’s really saying something!

Cons

  • Not a links course
  • greens and fairways played soft and slow

Played links hope island the other day great course everything in great shape greens good. The staff were great from bag drop, golf shop and starter was top class told us everything we need to know about gps on cart, we’re to go, drinks cart on course etc etc. They had special deal round $140 and free ck tee shirt ( think that has finished now ) Course was great with great holes to Finish with 17 th and 18 th very tough.I am local and did not really know public was ok to play so will come back very soon.

Played the course on 18/2/2012. Links Hope Island is a nice course but nothing special. GD have just rated it as the 35th best course in the country but I’m struggling to see how. Bunkers in the middle of fairways are stupid as well and there are a few of those. Was also disappointed at the fact that I was told when booked that the green fee would be $105 and included a Calvin Klein shirt but on arrival I was told it was $120 without the shirt and $140 if I wanted the "free" shirt. Poor communication with staff on the correct fees did not sit well with me. Course was just coming out of renovations too and it wasn’t perfect as you’d expect it to be for $120 even (I believe the green fees are higher when no renovations – OUCH, not worth it!). The golf course has some challenging holes but nothing really grabbed me till we got to the 230m par 3 17th and the par 5 18th. Both very good holes. The 17th is a cracker! Anyway, won’t be going back there in a hurry. Very underwhelmed by the course and it’s way overpriced. I will say the girls on the drinks carts were very nice and came around very frequently. If you want to play golf in the Brisbane/Gold cost area, Brookwater kicks this place for 6!

PROS

  • The 230m Par 3 17th hole. Sensational hole

Cons

  • Bunkers in the middle of fairways. They might have their place at St Andrew but they are stupid on pretend links courses like this one.

Played this course yesterday and it was in great condition. There is a lot of variety on this course with many variations in holes. We played off the back tees so most shots into the green were with long irons as this course is long! The fairways were in fantastic shape, the greens were not overly fast, but we’re in good shape and the sand (played a few shots out of sand) was in good nick. The wind was strong and this was a factor in scoring. One of the most intimidating par 3s was the 17th into a strong wind. It is around 195 meters from the back tees into a strong wind with a requirement to carry the distance with water short.

Will definitely come back, not too often as it isn’t cheap, but service is good and the course is a great layout in excellent condition.

PROS

  • Excellent condition
  • Good variety of holes
  • A real challenge
  • Good service

Cons

  • Expensive

Played here on the 27/12/2011 and was a little dissapointed with the condition of the course. Last time I played this course was 3 years ago and the course was fantastic.
Other than that, I found the course not overly challenging from the back markers as I’m a long hitter can carry most fairway bunkers.
I also played the Palms at Sanctuary Cove the day before and would recommend playing there first over Hope Island.

Wife and i played here on the 28th Nov 2011 and i must say it is our FAVOURITE GOLD COAST golf course.Course was is great condition and Staff overall were very good to deal with.Thru Hyatt Sanctuary we got a reasonable deal and we always play here when we are on the Gold Coast. The whole layout looks good and i just love the 17th par 3 over the water.

Agree with the ordinary service. We expected a lot more given the green fee but the course was great to play although pretty wet after recent rain. Found the fairways very tight but each to his own.

Played here first time two weeks ago during our Gold coast holiday. The club house is beautiful and the course condition is good. Very handy to have the GPS on the golf cart. Green fee is expensive. Service is pretty average given the class of the club.

I played this course today,5/5/10, what a great course, a real challenge from the back tees. Major rain yesterday caused bunkers to be GUR, but all in all great course. Staff were excellent and the course was a little wet in a few places, had to stick to cart paths.
$140 for the round was a little expensive, but worth it.

Played the course on the weekend.

Played the course on the weekend . Had a great time .
service and staff were excellent . Course was in great condition although approach shots landing on the greens drew a puff of sand . The greens were slow and took some getting used to . Played off the back tees and played well . Avoiding the many fairway bunkers was a challenge and a lot of fun . The GPS in each cart was a valuable asset when it actually worked . We had to depend on our playing partner to give us distances . Clubhouse was excellent without inflated prices . Payed $150 for the day . Totally overpriced . But guess what ? I will be back !

Absolutely first class course, from the moment you arrive to the moment you leave it is an absolute pleasure to be their.
Golf course is in A1 condition, tradition links course with lots of bunkers but can be rewarding if your a long driver. GPS carts a pleasure as was the service all day. A must for all keen golfers.

Wow… What a course. Chalenging but playable, exciting but not game- ruiningley-intimidating. Set on the beautiful Gold Coast this course truely must be one of the best courses Qld has to offer if not the country. Even if you only play it once a year or every couple of years. Spoil yourself you will not be disappointed.

Played here 19th April 2009

Very enjoyable experience, good service from bag drop to on course refreshments cart etc.

Havent had many chances to use GPS in carts before and have to say I loved it (also helps to speed up play of course)

Course was in great condition except for the bunkers which were very dissapointing, rocky and hard but understandable due to the recent weather conditions in QLD.

Would love to play there again soon

PROS

  • Service, Carts, GPS, refreshments, practice facilities etc.

Cons

  • Bunkers

Played Hope Island last weekend. The service was top notched. From the Bag drop to the drinks cart, you couldn’t really fault the service.

The course itself was challenging but you normally had a “chicken out” option for those inclined.

We found the course design beautiful and the pot fairway bunkers were punishing for those unlucky to roll in.

Most of the greens were table tops and really really fast. You to had to be on your game to land on the green from 100-150 out and stay on. All of our group had trouble staying on the green from approach shots.

We found the GPS in the carts useful but often were out by 10-15 metres in relation to the tee markers.

We all enjoyed the day and will definitely be back.

PROS

  • Fantastic Service
  • Beautiful Course

Played Hope for the first time and absolutely rate everything about it. Service was amazing, pace was good and the course was in great nick. Wiped the floor on the other Gold Coast courses we played during the week.

It is amazing to find a links course in a resort area and one designed by a player with such experience with links courses. Hope should be played as it was designed and not to ‘fly’ the ball to the target. All top rated links courses in the world are just that non target. What has happened to imagination by 99% of golfers world wide? If one is not confident enough to hit the ‘cut stuff’ take one less as if one does play the top rated links courses if you are off the cut stuff you are either OB or lost ball!! Golf is meant to be enjoyed, so put the ‘Big Dog’ back in the bag for those holes that demand accuaracy as there is enough run at Hope to make up for the lesser club! Of course bump and run is what all those old courses are about and what Peter Thompson has achived this at Hope.

For me, I just love the place as I have had 40+ years on links tracks around the world and to find one amongst typical target resort courses is a breath of fresh air. Off the back the course is demanding for anyone as the wind does get up and test anyone. Bump and run and putt well and the beer tastes wonderful. Even a bad day at Hope the beer tastes great as the staff are so friendly and service orientated.

This is a five star course with 5 star hospitality.

Played here twice over the weekend. Was highly recommended by Melbourne golfers as being amongst the top 3 in Queensland. This course lived up to that introduction / reputation.

The introduction to the club is as expected. In the price bracket ($109 using ISG) I expected a customer service experience as well as great golf and was very satisfied. Staff were excellent.

Moving to the clubhouse, again, more from a resort point of view, the facilities were superior to the average experience.

Now for the important part.

The practice facilities are unique in so far as the range shoots across water to a number of targets at varying distances. It was a fantastic preparation for any round ahead. It makes a massive difference to the enjoyment when you stand on the first tee feeling thoroughly prepared!

The course proper is a challenging, well-conditioned layout with reasonable variations in terms of the range of shots you’re called to hit. Doglegs in both directions and protective bunkering brought course management skills to the fore far more than the typical resort layouts on the Gold Coast.

The greens were a steady pace (good) but were very slow when I played. This would be fine so long as the greens encouraged a direct attack on the various pin placements, but they did not. The use of elevated green tables was probably a novel feature overused under those circumstances.

I have played this course a half dozen times this year….and from the time you drive into the car park the course oozes with class. the club house is magnificent . You step out from the clubhouse with pratice areas and putting greens a plenty. As for the course it is great, with the fairways as short as some golf course greens…. from the back markers the the course can be quite a challenge with the 17th hole worthy of respect from the back markers its over 200mts and if going at the green its all water … if trying to protect a score it does allow you to bail out to the left and make an easy par4 ….not a bad option ….nah if you here only the once you may as well have a go. Tip.. chipping around the greens is a real art here …raised fast greens demand respect.

Fantastic course. Scenic, long, wide. Well maintained, rough not severe, not too much water. And the best thing – GPS on the carts! Makes judging distances an absolute doddle.

Probably my favourite golf course.

This is a good resort course, not super difficult, but challenging enough. A bit pricey compared to others of the same quality. Definitely worth a hit.

This was a course made in golfing heaven, where even the average punter like myself would not only enjoy the layout but some of the challenging holes!

I do not know what has happened, but this course seemed to have gone off.

Pick any hole, and if you just slightly miss hit the fairways and you can simply forget it!

Lost ball.

I love this course, but something has gone terribly wrong. I was playing against a group of low handicapped punters and we all struggled.

The course maintenance staff, just simply have got it wrong!

Even a bad day at golf should be a better day then going to work.

Unfortunately today, I could not agree.

Please mow the cut, just off the fairways.

Hope Island is my favourite golf course with outstanding fairways and excellent greens. the fairways are that nice u could get your putter out and putt your way down to the hole! however the chances of getting some serious sizzle with your trusty lob wedge are non existant. The bunkers are plenty and if your playing well, you should avoid them however once your in one, it may take a few to get out again! I thoroughly recommend the course to anyone with some spare cash to spare in their pockets!

Played Hope Island with a friend on our GC trip last week. It was the second time I have played it and must say it was the best course I have played on. Not ridiculously hard but challenging. Required a few thought processes on most holes.

The whole experience was fantastic from the friendly attendant who took care of our bags on arrival, the awesome and useful colour GPS system, the beautiful club house and the course itself.

The highlight of the day was saying g'day to Peter Senior whilst we were both foraging for balls in the rough!

I have always enjoyed playing Hope (it rates in my top 3 in Queensland). I have enjoyed playing there every year for at least the past 5 years (on at least one occassion a year).

The greens are definately maturing. Although I noticed during my recent round they seem harder and slicker than on previous occassions. It's definately bump and run country, don't expect to lob it on there and spin ('cause it just won't happen).

The fairway rough also seems longer than it has in the past, and straying end a little bit will hurt!

You have to love the 17th (Hope Island), a 230 metre - Par 3 with water to the left and in front of you off the blocks. When you combine that with a strong wind in your face, usually there in the late afternoons, and a large green (compared to the other holes) it makes it one you just have to go for. But don't go long, as my colleague found out!

My other favourite hole, is the 2nd (The Figs), a 501m - Par 5. It really makes you think (club selection is the key) and can be an easy birdie hole. But just when things look good, it can bite you too. That big Fig at the 260m mark is a ball magnet, I have seen many good drives collect that or land on the beach to the left.

The Course - As with all links-style courses, if your game is on then you will have a good day out. Unfortunately I had a slow start (18-marker), but eventually caught up. I was playing with another 18 marker, and a Canadian playing off 4. It's fair to say that the 4-marker was punished whenever his spanking 250+ metre drives went wayward.

The course was rock hard, greens and fairways. If your drive landed on the short stuff it payed greatly (my longest was about 2665 mtrs, gotta love GPS), though look out for well placed hazards - pot bunkers in the middle of fairways can change your game. It took a few holes to get used to, but GPS in the carts really took my game to a new level - I was able to use it to run the ball up onto the green, rather than prey for them to stop - they were just too hard to take any spin. As another user here has remarked, most greens are 'upside-down saucers' - so if you stray the ball will keep rolling off the edge. Mind you, if your short game is on, expect to scramble well.

The 16th is short but challenging - I hadn't lost a ball all day before I deposited 2 into someones backyard with a couple of duck-hooks. By the end of the round you could be mistaken for taking a sigh-of-relief, but the 17th and the 18th are possibly the 2 most challenging holes - a 220 mtr par 3 with water in front and left (and lots of it), and the 18th a par-5 with water down the left - and the fairway leans towards it the closer you get to the hole.

If it wasn't for poor putting (how many times have we all said that?) I would have had a really good round, but I couldn't sink anything outside 5 feet except for one par-saving putt on the 13th (a sand-save no less). A really tough hole, watch out for a cluster of 4 bunkers off the tee to set up your approach.

Facilities - A visit from the drinks cart every 3-4 holes ensured we were well looked after. By the 10th it was raining pretty hard, I was pleasantly surprised to be greeted by a staff member handing out towels from a cart. Mind you, by the 15th it was blazing sunshine. No complaints with the GPS though - I found it very accurate, unlike my short irons.

Had a great day up there - and I'm sure I will next time too. Make sure you get there early to hit a few range balls though.

I played this course in March 2003. The Pro shop is Callaway only but it does have a large range of clothing.

The course was in very good condition and had some interesting holes. It is not just a matter of using your driver on every hole. I started on #10 and the first three holes are quite easy with wide fairways and attractive shapes. After that it gets harder. Almost all the greens are upturned saucers with valleys off them. As the greens are so hard you won't see the pitch mark even with a 140 m 7 iron and more often than not your ball will bounce through, down the valley and come to rest on the next slope up. You are then presented with a downhill lie, a hill in front of you and a green which won't take any bite. Very difficult indeed. Very frustrating too. I was hitting my irons well but my chipping was not on song so my 8 hcp blew out to 18 on the day.

The GPS is good for longer distances though was very suspect about overstating yardage under 100m. I often found my shots going clear over the back. Must be the rarified air at $110 a pop!

Insummary you will probably have more fun for you dollar elsewhere.

28. andrew14966 | Rated | 26 Dec 2002 | Add A Review

A little disappointing. Not as much of a challenge as I thought it would be from reading golf magazine articles.

It's not too difficult, in fact if you are hitting the ball well you'll probably break your handicap by many.

I've played there 3 times over the last 3 years and the condition of the course seems to be getting worse.
