Played the course yesterday. The greens were good apart from the occasional bare patch. The fairway’s on the other hand were bare and were in need of a good weeding and watering.A lot of the hole maps were quite weathered and could not be read.Which made for a bit of frustration being my first time playing there. My mate and I were under the impression there was a driving range and chipping practice area only to be informed they no longer exist due to neglect.

The course has some beautiful scenery and abundant wildlife which made for a good relaxing day.Overall I was happy as I was playing on the $15 a round Cudo deal. When added to $19 for a shared cart was about the right price for what you get.I would play the course again.

PROS

  • Friendly pro shop staff
  • Cheap green fee deals available
  • Beautiful scenery and wildlife.

Cons

  • Fairways bare and full of weeds, hole maps paint worn off and are unreadable

I last played Horizons in 2008. Back then it was in immaculate condition and I just loved it. I heard that it was allowed to deteriorate to a state where it was unplayable. I played it recently (8 Sept 2011) and found that its come back a long way. The fairways whilst a little hard did play ok. I would rate them 5/10 currently but can see with Summer on its way that they’ll be back to former glory. The greens I’d rate 7/10. Very playable and with minimal bare patches. Almost unnoticeable. Well done to the new owner (?). I’ll definitely play it again.

I bought 4 rounds of golf for $60.00 from a promotion that was running. May I say I got what I payed for. Anyone who has anything good to say about this course are kidding them self. The fairways were baron, greens were in poor condition with huge clumps of cut grass left on them after mowing. It looked like the women’s auxiliary had mowed them. The biggest hazard was the timber walkway between holes 2 and 3 which should be condemned before someone falls through it. With all the good courses around Newcastle and the Hunter avoid this one till someone takes control and fixes it up to its former glory. It appears all the new owners have done is change the name to something ridiculous.

Played Horizons Golf Resort yesterday 11th August, having last played there just over 12 months ago i must say wow how this place has turned around in such a short time.the new owners have pumped new life into it and it is starting to show.
to start with $12 entry for the Thursday comp! what a BARGAIN! .Very friendly staff at the pro shop and the bar, that something we all enjoy. The overall design is great with lots of interesting and varied holes. the overall condition of the course was great. The greens and fairways were all in pretty good condition. It is strongly recommended that if you are in the port stephens area, book in for a round you will be Pleasantly Surprised at this great course. :) :) :) :) :)

Played in May 2011, and despite talk of the course falling away, the new owners have pumped new life into it and it showed. Still some maintenance to do (wasnt sure if I was going to fall thru the walkway to the 3rd) but the course was in very good condition.
Fantastic layout, and a pleasure to play.
$12 entry for the Thursday comp! BARGAIN! dont know how long that will last.

Returned to Horizons after playing it back in February and was amazed at the overall improvement to the course, especially the greens. Looks like the new owners are doing a great job. The course is looking excellent. Well worth the trip out to Horizons.

Played Horizons recently on the 27th of April 2011 having never played there before but heard of the quality that this course used to be in for the last 10 years. Driving up to the course I was shocked to see how dry the fairways were.
To make it worse the amount of people attempting to play at the same time. When i went to tee off there was about 10-15 people on the first tee, 1 group on the fairway and another on the green. This made the day very very slow and ended up playing 9 holes in just under 3 hours before giving up and driving home.
I hope that the new owners can restore this once fabled golf course to its true potential that it used to have around this region and work out a better way for course time management.

PROS

  • layout, some very difficult holes
  • greens were fast and had a true run

Cons

  • fairway quality, dry and some parts just sand or dirt
  • too many people attempting to play at the same time
  • speed of play

Played Horizons today, and from everything that I had read, I was pleasantly surprised. Although some of the fairways were in need of some water, the overall condition of the course was great. The greens were all in pretty good condition. Wont take much for this top class course to be restored to its former glory, and with the course ready to undergo new ownership, I look forward to returning very soon. Definetly worth the trip out to Horizons.

Played Horizons yesterday and the problems with the greens discussed in the previous few reviews have definitely been resolved. All 18 greens were in play and in very good condition. The only issue with the greens was the speed as they were pretty slow but once you got the pace right, the roll was very good.

The fairways were pretty patchy, however, and the bunkers were typical of bush style courses i.e. Not a lot of fluffy sand and often filled with leaves and debris.

I teed off at around 1pm on Sunday and had the course virtually to myself. The overall design is great with lots of interesting and varied holes.

PROS

  • Great architecture
  • Value for money

Cons

  • Patchy fairways in places
  • Bunkers in poor shape

Prior to my last round, I would have said Horizons was one the best courses in NSW (I have played it many times), but I played on the 4 June and the course was in a really bad condition with a number of temp greens and of those greens that are open most have bare patches. I was very dissapointed to say the least. I will not go back.

Played Horizons on Monday 14 June – disappointed with the condition of the course after having played there a few times previously. Seems to have gone downhill a bit. Greens were bare in portions. Fairways were not lush – more brownish than green, even after the rainfalls from previous week or so.
The course will need a fair of amount of maintenance to be done before considering playing there again.

not knowing the condition of the course before booking i was terribly dissapointed, 6 or 8 temp greens, bunkers unplayable and the greens that were open were pretty much unplayable. even though a discount was applied to green fees i still would not go back. they should probably close the course until it is playable.

I heard a rumour that Horizons has gone bust. A shame because when I and a friend played it a year 1/2 ago it was really great. Bumped into a friend the other day who told me there is only really one green, the rest are mud.

Played 7th March. Worst course condition I have ever played. It should be closed. I updated my profile picture to show you the condition of the greens. If we were not away for a golf weekend we would have walked off course on 2nd hole. No greens on fairways even when playing preferred lies, all greens lost, no grass on tee blocks etc etc. Raised concern at end and was told that is why the fee was reduced. Still $69 on the day. Avoid at all cost. Played Pacific Dunes 20min away the following day and would recommend to anyone. Course gets a star cause they would not let me go lower.

A group of twelves of us played Horizons in November. A mixed bag of golfers and we found that the course was much easier to handle than we all orginally thought! The fairways are wide enough to allow a few driving mistakes and apart from the very first green, they all played true for our putters and there was no real problem for anyone! I think any reasonable player will find the course nice to play and yes, the greens on the day were very generous. Look forward to playing Horizons again one day!

The previous reviewer may have been unlucky in his experience of Horizons. I played it in late October, and the greens were very good.

The first two fairways were a bit bare and patchy, but the rest of the course was pretty good.

It isn’t great value (the after 1.00pm special price was still $50odd), but it is still a high quality course that is worth a visit.

Sory to say, but Horizons appears very neglected since we last played there 2 years ago. There are major problems coming as fairways are inundated with various weed types including a lot of clover. Removal costs and impact on playing conditions during such an exercise would be enormous. Service was minimal with no bag drop attendant, no fitting of clubs to carts and only a minimum of stock in a poorly presented Pro Shop.
I could not recommend the Course to others and when compared to nearby Pacific Dunes, where we also played, which we would rate as a 9 out of 10, Horizons would be a 3.

Noting the immediately previous post about greens, my trepidition was blown away on the practice green. Terrific quality. Cored about a month ago and the fringing 750mm of the greens are still showing scarification, they have been left a little long but they are true and healthy. The fairways however are having a bad hair day but there are so many problems around the country with the drought, fires, floods and diseases. The course has 30cm preferred lies but even in a social round I didn’t use them. A very nice layout out and off the blues the bunkers really make you think. A good hitter however can clear most trouble off the whites. Nice touch having 4 sets of tee boxes – giving the kids some extra choices.

Plenty of carts and cart paths, very little GUR and lots of room for the straight hitter.

Booked tee times through iseek, very easy process, however….

Played at end of August 2009, no one about which was good, but conditioning was very very poor. Greens were on par with a 2 bit golf course in Country NSW.

They were long, slow, rough and very bumpy. Such a disappointment for as I had played many years ago and rated this course. The staff looked bored, and the placed looks very tired.

Overall the course was in good condition, the staff were very helpful & even put out some nearest the pin & longest drive markers for our group.

One downside – there was very little choice in terms of food available after we’d finished our 1st nine holes, by the time our last two groups came through there was no food left.

This is a must play course. There’s not much negative to say about this course, except that it’s not cheap (but better value than Nelson’s Bay) and the practice facilities are a little sparse and not in line with the quality of the course. Likewise the clubhouse which was not bad, but a little modest in comparison to the course.

The greens were fast and true (though difficult to read), though look a little unhealthy. I wonder if someone has been cutting them too short. I hope they hold up over the long run.

The fairways were excellent and the tee boxes more or less flat and in good condition. The rough was just that, and you should take plenty of balls should you be prone to spraying your shots. On that note, I felt the balance between being punished for a genuinely bad shot and only a slightly bad (or misread) shot was good. If you nail your shots, or only slightly mishit them, you will not be unjustly punished (unlike Nelsons Bay).

The bunkers will need a topping up of sand after the deluge that we had over over the last 10 days, though they still had just enough sand in them.

The course is very pretty, though since it’s more or less flat, you don’t get any decent views of the course or surroundings. That said, there were some nice on-course estates that are worth looking at.

The bottom line, pay it, play it, and enjoy it.

Played this course in the Holden Scramble Comp. It was my first time out at Horizons and the comp was played off the black tees. Very challenging course from back there but not entirley unfair. Despite the things i had read, i found the course to be in excellent condition, the greens were first rate and some fringe and fairway issues were mostly weather related. It certainly is a test of golf, but a pretty good one nonetheless. If in the area, well worth a game.

Having just played Horizons recently I found the course quite good in the winter conditions and after the rain, the greens where at a fast speed and the speed with the fairways being tight due to the winter conditions, however it should be great in the summer. Being an avid golfer who travels and plays around Australia just some thing to point out: some of the green have appeared to shrink over the years with the fringes not being cut to define it from the fairway, putting surface. All the bunkers had different texture some wet ones where like hitting out of sludge. The course needs more course furniture and sand bucket bins. After the game however the clubhouse facilities are tired and need a face lift especially being a resort it does not have that bar atmosphere and golf clubhouse feel. The Pro Shop staff where however great especially the boys who orgsanised the carts for our group.

After hearing so much about the difficulty of this course and hearing “take 12 golf balls at least” type comments, it was a pleasant surprise to find that yes, whilst the course has plenty of water hazards and bunkers and with any type of strong wind you’d have to be hitting it crisp – it is by no means an unfair or long course so for the 230m to 250m hitters from the tee, you’ll find if you can find the short grass “most of the time”, there are plenty of par’s and maybe the odd birdie putt out there. Like any good course though, it’s got holes that can certainly undo a great round – the short water riddled par 4 18th a classic example – for the record, if you hit a fade or slice and the wind is left to right – you’d be in huge trouble!!

Recently went with 8 golfers (12-20hcp) and we all struggled with the rough. If your ball lands off the fairway it is very thick. The rough is cut to about 2 inches, but your ball goes to the bottom of it and is very hard to get it out. The course was in good condition, we also played Bonville and the Vintage (twice)and would prefer to play the later again. Nice course but I don’t think I’ll go back again.

This is a terrific course…. a little on the expensive side, but dead easy to get on and always in good condition. Nelson Bay is not subject to water restictions, so they do give it a lot a water. I find this a good challenge, and will suit a mid-low handicapper

The course is located in Port Stephens, NSW in the suburb of Salamander Bay which is away from the main tourist area of Nelson Bay. It’s a resort course so as has been mentioned below, expect water hazards, mounding, plenty of bunkers, large greens and plenty of nice surroundings. The water hazards are all red staked so that makes it a little easier (and helps keep up the pace of play somewhat). I’ve played here now about seven or eight times and it is always in excellent condition. When the course held the ANZ Championship (2004 I think) a lot of work was put in to it, and the results are still there today: penal vegetation bordering most fairways, excellent greens and well defined hazards. My favourite holes are: – the 3rd, a short par 4 which has a slight dog-leg left, a mound directly between the green and tee so you can’t actually see the best line, and a fairway bunker which catches anything long or not worked around the bend. - the 8th, a 150m par 3 hit over the wetlands which continue around the right of the green. To the left are a couple of bunkers and the green itself has a number of levels. This hole was included in the large book ‘1001 golf holes to play before you die’, published about 04 or 05 I think. (incidentally, although this book concentrates on American courses it does have some Australian holes featured. Royal Melbourne has six holes listed which is the most by any one course worldwide…) - the 11th, a 384m par 4 which has water left (not too close), melaluca forest right (bordering the fairway, so if you’re going to miss, miss left) and a raised up, bunkered and undulating green. Par is a good score on this hole! This course is one of my favourite courses in Australia, and I’ve played over 200 different courses in every state and territory.

PROS

  • 1. As a resort course it is generally easy to get a tee time if you book a couple of days in advance.
  • 2. Conditioning is always good to excellent.
  • 3. You have to think about where you're hitting, and if you play poor golf you might get away with it for a hole or two but the course will find you out quite quickly.
  • 4. For a golf break, stay in Port Stephens and play at Nelson Bay GC and Pacific Dunes as well.

Cons

  • 1. Prices seem to keep going up every couple of months, which I guess is to be expected from resort courses. At least it is still significantly cheaper than the ridiculous green fees found on some Gold Coast courses!
  • 2. Although built on a sand base the bunkers seem to retain water after rain.

I love this course. I have now played here 3 times over the last 5 or so years. It is a great resort course in great condition. You can understand why it has held a number of championship events over the years. I have to say that the staff were really friendly and it was easy to book a tee-off time.

Accurate hitting is essential to enjoy your game here. This is not a long course at approx 6100m but expansive greens with double and triple levels including swales, combined with a significant number of bunkers and dogleg holes makes managing your game essential. The course meanders through reclaimed wetlands and any shot that doesn’t land on the fairway is a lost ball. It has a similar feel to Kooindah Waters (located on the central coast) with the use of reclaimed wetlands and strategic bunkering or (if you travel) it is very similar to Laguna Quays in the Whitsundays but not quite as good.

I rate almost every hole on this course as excellent. Each hole has a variance that makes it unlike any other hole on the course. As such, it makes playing each hole different. This is a must play course for a serious golfer who is visiting the area.

I played the course only last month and it was in magnificent condition, with the wind blowing it makes the course play very difficult and with the miriad of bunkers and trees everywhere off the fairways hitting straight is a must.

Driver can be an advantage but is not necessary. A crispt fairway wood or long iron can put enough distance on all holes for you to be in good position. Nonetheless low markers should try to give themselves the best chance on some holes to hit shorter irons in given the size of the greens. The best holes for driver are one, four and nine on the front, and sixteen and seventeen on the back.

The finishing hole is a good one, for whilst it's a short 310m par 4, the proximity of water on the right and bunkers left.Overall Horizons is a must vist golf course for any calibre of player.

I played the course a couple of month ago and i'll say that is is the best ive played. The greens are fast and the fairways are very green. If you are a social player it is a better idea to start out early. I started at 7am and had a clean run. As i have only played the course once i can't remember every hole. One thing i'll tell you and that is you will be punished for bad shots. There are so many bunkers and plenty of trees. Straight shot are vital.

The course itself is flat and the holes aren't terribly long. One hole i love is the 18th Par 4 307m. It is fairly short and big hitters will go close to getting on the green in 1. For the average hitters like me a precise tess shot is needed to avoid water hazard down the right hand side of the fairway. A short iron is then needed. A swampy course with its fair share of mossies but definitly worth playing. Exceptional course. I will be back.

Horizons is currently in magnificent condition from the tee beds to the fairways to the scenery and to the greens. One of the most challenging courses Iíve played on, and will be back to stay at the resort again.

We played of the white tees Par 72 5920m with 10 Par 4s ranging from 300-380m, 4 Par 5s ranging from 455-485m and 4 Par 3s ranging from 135-165m. So many signature holes that demand attention, but overall the Par 4s are the most challenging to par let alone birdie. The water hazards on the course do not really come into play but are scenic nonetheless. The real hazards are trying to keep your ball out of the 100 or so bunkers scattered over the course, and thick tree-lined OOB which line both sides of all holes except the 1stand 18th.

Played here on Saturday 21/1/06 and paid $29 for 18 holes and $30 for a cart. Two of us teed off at 4.30pm and finished by 8pm. There are lots of discount prices, if you tee off after 2pm 7 days a week, and definitely worth a stay at the resort too, although the town has not much to offer, the course is a superb retreat.

Had a round there last week - course in great condition but the clubhouse is very tatty and aged.

Started early and got round in 4.25hrs (with a cart) - good for a championship course.

Don't pay full fees -lots of specials about.

A championship course that is affordable to play. Not too many come to mind - perhaps Moonah Links in Vic, The Vines in WA. The upside of this is it attracts golfers keen to test themselves against a championship course who might otherwise not have the chance. The downside is that golfers who are not ready to do that are also attracted to the course. This tends to mean six hour rounds and many unfilled divots on the fairway.

The course itself is excellent, as it rewards good golf. Not overly long, it requires careful positioning strategy, good iron play and a solid putting stroke. If any part of your game is off, you will be penalised quite severely by the abundant water hazards, the strategic bunkering and/or the large, undulating greens.

The finishing hole is a good one, for whilst it's a short 310m par 4, the proximity of water on the right and bunkers left, coupled with a quick and sloping green, makes you concentrate back on the golf with that clubhouse beer beckoning you from yonder...

My only wish for Horizons is one that I admit smacks of golfing snobbery. I think the course should be restricted to registered AGU handicap golfers. THis would help speed up play and reduce the wear and tear on the on the course for those who enjoy it more. Learners or non-AGU handicappers should play less challenging courses for their hard-earned money!

47. jimandr | Rated | 20 Nov 2003 | Add A Review

I really enjoyed my game here, and I think most serious golfers will, too.

The course is flat and easy to walk, but it is not easy to play, despite not being as long as some. Length is not the source of the challenge here.

The fairways are links-style, with lots of bumps and hollows. They were in good, but not great condition, but the couch grass gave a good lie every time.

The greens are definitely resort-style, with huge surfaces, often split into two or even three tiers, and a few swales and humps. The surfaces themselves were perfect to putt on, and held a well-struck shot easily.

The challenge lies in keeping the ball in play, and then placing it in the correct areas for scoring. The fairways are fairly wide, but there is no rough, only scrub, hazards or out of bounds if you spray the ball.

If successful in keeping it in play, you then need to pay attention to the pin positions, as long putts over all sorts of humps, swales and level changes can make two putts impossible from the wrong place.

The Par 5's are tight but a bit weak, and the par 3's are all pretty good.

$50 bucks for a round on a weekday was money well spent.

48. joe | Rated | 10 Jan 2003 | Add A Review

Built on wetlands, so you need to expect a little water. As long as you are not intimidated by the large mounds & spacious greens, you should not have too much trouble with this course. It is in fact quite flat, which does make ball striking a lot easier.

The par 5's are all similar length & are not that hard. Although the 12th (Par 5) is quite tight & will require some care.

There are no really long par 4's so driver is not needed all the time. The two short par 4's (5th & 18th) are actually fairly wide, not putting much pressure on the drive at all. That makes them relatively easy holes.
