Played Howeston last week and the course is in top condition. There is plenty of water in the lagoons, the fairways are lush, and the greens green. A few weeds on the greens but it’s not too bad. At only $18 a game you get a bit of riff raff on the course, no other course would you see football shorts, no shirts and thongs, but maybe that’s part of it’s charm?
Well worth the trip, and there’s a lot worse courses around for twice as much money

I play here regularly granted the privately owned course isn’t as well maintained as some of the others but its a cheap alternative. No need for booking just show up 18.50 weekends and 16 weekdays if recall correctly, first in best dressed for the carts though so early birds get the carts. The 27 hole course is good for all well laid out and fairly easy find your way.

I played this course for the first time on Friday and was pleasantly surprised.
Green fees are $15 for weekday rounds, great value.
I had heard stories about the course with some describing it as a goat track, etc. I suspect the fairways might get fairly rough in dry periods but at present they are not too bad at all, and did not really have any problems with lies.
This is a 27 hole course and they change the make up of the main 18 each week apparently, although I did see a few players on the other 9 holes so I assume they use it for any overflow.
We played the Weston and the Westward nines.
Fairways are fairly wide and open in most cases.Whilst there are plenty of trees lining the fairways, they were not overly punishing if you happened to stray.
Some of the holes are a little non-descript, but there are also some gems in the rough amongst them. I thought the Weston hole 7 was a simply stunning setting (long par 3 over lots of water to a severe sloping green built into the side of a small hill). The water hazards were extremely picturesque.
The course has great topography overall and there is plenty of movement up and down over the course as you move from hole to hole.
Water is used very effectively on a number of holes; I liked the island green on Weston hole 4, and the iron and pitch over water layout of the Weston 6th Hole.
Much less water on the Westward nine but still comes into play on a couple of holes. I think it was low tide when we played and I suspect a few mudflat areas are actually covered in water at high tide.
Overall I would call it a picturesque and honest course. There is lot of wild life if you observe closely; e.g. the water features/hazards are full of fish, plenty of ducks and other birds etc.
Not an overly hard track although there are some water hazards that will catch you out quickly if you get complacent.
The course is public and not licensed as far as I could tell. There is a well stocked shop for refreshments at reasonable prices. There are also a number of pavilions that I am guessing are used by social clubs etc that are regulars at the course.
You can’t book, just turn up. We had no waiting and the round flowed well (3 & 3/4 hours). We were called through early by a larger group in front, let a single player through us soon after and never really had to wait any length of time on any hole after that.

I played here for the first time last weekend and found this to be an average course. The combination of wide fairways, thin rough, and a narrow tree line make it forgiving, although a couple of holes on the blue 9 are quiet tricky. The overall condition is not the best, with patchy and thin grass on the fairways, and some poor greens. The maintenance schedule for the greens must be different for each 9, as the greens on the 2nd 9 I played were very different (better) to the 1st 9. There are 3 or 4 par 4’s that longer hitters could reach from the tea, being in the 250m range. The clubhouse facilities are poor, as are some of the directions shown on getting from green to the next tee, as it is a bit of a hike to the next hole sometimes. Some of the golfers on the course certainly did not look like your normal golfing types (had piercing & tattoo’s) but all were very polite and certainly knew golfing etiquette, with a every group I came up behind letting me through (I was playing alone).
The course serves it purpose quiet well though, being a cheep round with no membership or booking required. I will play here again.

Not bad, bunkers and water hazards make for a nice challenge. You have to be carefull around the water in spring as Mummy and Daddy birds get a bit angry when you looking for your balls around thier little babies! Other than that make you have a few spare balls as its inevitable that you give some to the water gods.

I played there today with my usual playing partner in the cold and rain and I must say that we had an unusually good time. The course was deserted due to the weather and it felt like we were playing in the UK with the landscape and the weather. The fairways were so so but the greens in the most part were quite decent. And for $13.50 for 18 holes how could you complain. We shared a cart and the whole thing came up to $28.50 each, a great bargain

I give it a 3 our of 10. The course is very drip but I did like the greens. (The only highlight). Might go back if I’m in the area or if the Social Club plays there again. I played the Yellow and the Blue. I liked the Blue more.

Nothing wrong with howeston, great course, sure the greens are a little ruff in places but for $13.50 play 27 holes anytime u like what more do u want, maybe its the fact u cannot break 100 around the par 71 course thats makes it the bad courseu rave about...

Ive played this course several times as its in my local area. Its a 27 hole course which allows good flow (most of the time)
I must say i quite enjoy this course... sure the fairways are not lush like some of the top courses in the area and some of the greens are a bit bumpy. But for 13.50 you really cant complain. There are 3 sets of 9 RED YELLOW and BLUE
Each have there own challenges with the blue course bringing water in to play on serveral holes. The Yellow presents several birdie chances. While the Red course has a mixture of both.
This course is pretty forgiving even if you stray off the tee you generally get a reasonable 2nd shot. The fairways can provide some tough iron shots.
In summary if your just trying to get your game together this is the course for you check it out.

Iíve played on this course on many occasions simple because you can turn up, pay your $16.50 and play as many holes as you want. This is a very reasonable price as are the drinks and food, although there is no Bar facilities to help you celebrate that 20 foot birdie putt on the 8th (Yellow). The course is a 27-hole layout (Yellow, Blue and Red) which could be redefined (Easy, Normal, Hard), because the amount of water increases one each 9; ensuring poor shot placement will give you that sinking feeling and a high score. There are also good holes for birdie changes (7th and 8th Yellow) for long hitters.
The fairways are okay for a Public Course, but youíll rarely be hitting out of the dirt and stones, as most of the fairways have a reasonable amount of cover, but are hardly lush The 27-hole placement can also make it a bit of a walk to the next tee, e.g. Yellow, 8th to 9th. The Greens are a mixed bag, with one being very fast, to another be slow, to another being patchy, but that adds to the challenge of the course. I enjoy my golf whichever course I play, but for a game organised at the last minute, you canít beat Howeston.

i can't believe the reviews of others about howeston,ok
it's not the best looking course but its not the worst
either.
i play there at least once a week and it's a very challenging
and enjoyable course.it's a course that makes you hit did
straight because if you don't your not in for a good
day.i've played many courses where if you hook or slice you
can get out of trouble but at howeston if you do this your in the
water or out of bounds.the greens are in excellent condition and
some of the fairways are nice and wide, the green fees are cheap
and you never have to book and none of my mates have ever
complained about it so i will definitely keep playing there.keep
up the good work howeston

I grew up playing this course when it was a nice public 18 holer with hard, fast fairways, true greens and was a user-friendly layout. It broke my heart to return after a lengthy absence interstate and found the whole layout had changed. The new 27 hole layout is dreadful. The holes do not flow on to each other, the distance from green to next tee is ridiculous in some cases and the general course maintenance is poor. I am sorry to say that this was my last game at Howeston and I prefer to retain the fond memories of how it WAS, not the goat track it now IS.

I have played this course when it was 18 holes and though it is a budget course it was always an enjoyable game.
The course has been extended to 27 holes.
The quality of the course has not been improved and the layout of the course is very poor.
The distance between some of the green-next tee would do justice for a par 4 hole to play on the way.
There is a few places were you have to cross fairways to get from one hole to the next.
I am very dissapointed with the new layout and I will not be returning to this course again.

Played there a few times with friend who suddenly decided to play golf in the weekend.
Good things about this track:
1: First in First serve, no booking needed
2: Dirt cheap green fee. $11.5 weekdays and $16.5 weekends & public holiday
3: 27 holes you can hack
4: The greens are reasonable good... for the price.
Bad things about this track:
1: The fairway... is not maintained at all. Not matter you hit it on fairway or rough, it's the same.
2: Because it's first in first serve, couple of time got 30 plus people lined up on first tee...
3: And 70% of them are truly hackers...
4: And 70% of those hackers are pretty rude :(
5: In the summer, it smells.
But for the price you get, I won't complain too much... plus if you suddenly want to play golf in Saturday or Sunday morning without booking... it's very likely your only option.
