Hey Lukepar5 and Pert. Please make sure you address those issues with the club manager or committee. We can’t expect postings on ISG to make any difference unless it is brought up in a formal expression with the correct people, not just us golfing tragics who rate courses based on our experience. Don’t hope that the captain reads it here, make sure you address it to him or the club so he defintly gets it. I could live with 5 hours on a championship course but 6 is unacceptable and they need to be told

2. pert | Rated | 29 Jan 2012 | Add A Review

i ve only just joined this club after karana downs closed down 6 hour games are common we need a course marshall also the system of raising the flags on the 3 blind holes dont work these are poorly designed holes and need to be looked at.

Lukepar5 you should have a look at the positives, fields of 200 and more. ots of new members, of course they are settling in and have to learn the course. Maybe you can do your bit and show them about. I haven’t seen so many people on the course loving the layout and friendly staff for years. Focus on the fact that this is the only championship course in the region and see why peole want to come here. Have faith that slow play is being addressed and Monthy Mugs are always slow, but hey I agree it took me 5 hrs, not six and your were ahead of me.

4. lukepar5 | Rated | 25 Jan 2012 | Add A Review

as a club we need to address slow play 6 hours for a game on a sat. we could also work on dress standards members and social play i seen a guy playing in thongs and a t shirt .

Found it to be a challenging course for someone of my ability. Would definately have another round there. Found it a bit difficult to navigate between tees as a first timer here. Pro shop staff very friendly and accommodating.

I enjoy the course layout with plenty of variety. It is good value for money (ex Brisbane Golf Club member.

Don’t fret LukePar5. There is no one out there in golf course land really making any money. It is a numbers game. Get em through the door and spend some coin in the club were profits are really made. It is a very good short term strategy used when the course is not full. I have only recently joined the club and think the membership is good value. For every 20 players playing $20 a game and if one of them end up joining, thats one more member that the Club never had. 100 social players could mean 5 new members? More than $4K extra revenue in membership alone.
I love the course and the challenge it provides and am proud to call it home

as i member i couldn’t wait or our new course to open but our marketing has much to be desired our brand ipswich golf club wayne grady design has suffered we are becoming such a discount product its cheaper to play social then join this century old club, for a mere $20 our brand is suffering something very difficult to regain.

Played there recently and really enjoyed the new holes-Grade’s has done well. Am considering coming back for the Ipswich Open but would be hoping the condition of fairways will have improved. All in all reasonably priced, good service and a much better layout than previous.

Played here again the other day, what a difference a few weeks have made. First major renovation after severe flooding and it has gone from strength to strength. Well done guys.We saw a stack of members out working on the course and they were a friendly bunch who obviously love the place. This course needs a little bit of length added to it to be a beast but pick your shots and you will score well. Fantastic and getting better all the time. JohnE you just be hard to please, you need to remember this course is less than 2 years old.

Had a fun round here today with great company on a course that is developing very well. Great service from everyone in the Pro Shop and great to see James working there with his fabulous welcoming smile and always welcome tips on the current course conditions.
For those yet to play the new course at Ipswich you should know that this course is developing nicely and will be a real treat in just a couple of years time as it beds in. In the mean time there will be spots that appear a little raw or rough as is to be expected with any new course. The green keepers are doing a magnificent job and providing lots of nice little touches around the course – things like the excellent choice of sand for the bunkering which plays very predictably and consistently; and small rock beds and garden beds around some greens.
The course design is very nice and makes you play a good quality strategic game. There’s plenty of water hazards and bunkers. However length and power are not prerequisites for good scoring. This course relies on its excellent design and hilly nature, with lots of tricky up, down and sidehill lies providing plenty of interest and a stern defense for the course. Skilled players will score well here.
The Par 3’s are all excellent – but there are a couple of devilish short downhillers with bunkers and water hazards seemingly all around them. 2 of the Par 5’s are reachable in 2 for many players, and the Par 4’s make you think. There shorter holes are indeed a feature of the course and make it both a good test but very fair for all. A great design all round – especially good for club golfers.
The greens are coming along nicely too and will provide a fabulous putting surface in a month or so.
Adding further interest are the aerial antics of the RAAF F/A 18 Super Hornets and supporting aircraft from Amberley Air Force Base which put many sorties aloft while we were on the course. Fantastic!

We played there last Friday on a scoopon deal and again enjoyed the outing. Not sure why JohnE would complain as this time of year is when most golf clubs in OZ do their work on the course for the spring growing season. Maybe JohnE has never noticed this before?

Greens were a bit slow when we played, but again they need to recover after winter. So what about a few bunkers? If you have a good gander you can see bad damage from the floods, so there must be an issue in getting them back up to play again.

As for the chook dung, Ipswich did this a while ago and the fairways improved a real lot; so good on them for doing it again as it will only improve the grass coverage.

This is great layout and it will be one of the best in SEQLD in a few years. Me and my mates are more than happy with the scoopon deals and are happy to come back a lot and try to beat the course!

14. JohnE | Rated | 05 Sep 2011 | Add A Review

Played on the scoopon deal. This is a well laid out course with tons of potential unfortunately it is not well maintained. The driving range was closed because there were no balls available, due to staff not picking them The black tee boxes were covered in manure so no luck playing from those tees, so luckily they swept a bit away from the blues. The fairways are really nice though nice and hard with plenty of roll. The sand traps are nice and soft but a few are marked as GUR. The greens had been punched and fertilized as well and pretty slow. Apart from the greens the worst part was the smell of manure on every hole… all in all pretty short course but some very creative holes, it was nice for a one time play but i couldn’t see myself coming back anytime soon.

This is turning out to be a great course. The recent work on the greens has worked a treat. The fairways are coming along and can not wait for the warmer months when we see some growth. All in all a good golfing experience and friendly staff. On negitive, is the culture of cart use and the parking of motorised golf carts in amongst the outside seating making it almost imposible to sit there after a round and enjoy a drink. Come on Ipswich GC, if you want to encourage added revenue over the bar get the carts to park elsewhere.

Played Yesterday. It is the second time to play this course. I have to say the layout of this course is really good. Especially great value for the money. Staffs are helpful and friendly and the members there are nice and friendly. I will definitely play there again. If the distance of the course could be added a little, that will be perfect for this course.

Played here today (April 26 2011). Good to see the course has recovered after the floods. Still in really good condition and the greens are coming along much better than they were initially (not as bumpy). Day was busy but everyone kept moving along really well. Good day out at a great price.

Stiprabre…..no signs? Apart from being confused over fertiliser, you must also need glasses. There are signs after each green which show the direction to the next tee. I know they are there because I nearly drove into one with the cart when we played yesterday.

The course has come on a lot since we last played a few weeks ago and the greens were a lot better yesterday. Lots more growth with the checken poo and not so bumpy greens now. I think a few of us will be joining shortly as you get a few months extra for free now. Seems like memebrship is cheaper over a year than social green fees if you play once a week like us.

22. brocksaunders | Rated | 26 Apr 2011 | Add A Review

Not too bad for the price. As others have commented the course really does need a few years to improve. The cart paths are terrible pretty much the whole way round the course. Most of the greens were very slow and quite bumpy.
The layout was interesting, but very unforgiving of ill-directed shots.

Played here today for the first time in 5 years and the new course is so much better than the old course. The old course I found to be rather dull but the new layout had some great holes. There were more groundsmen than players on the course which led to us having a fast and fun day off golf. The only thing missing is signage on hole layouts at the tee block.

stiprabre; Seems you don’t know chicken manure (fertilizer) from roo poo.
Fairways were top dressed with it 2 weeks ago.Fairways and teeboxes not trimmed because of that. IGC is always improving, you must remember it is 12 months old.I am amazed at how much it has come on since it was flooded. Your comments are harsh and if your knowledge is on par with your knowledge of roo poo then it is wisest not to post crap as well.

Booked the game through the on-line system and all worked great. Good system.

The Ipswich Golf Club has undergone a lot of changes in the last two years with sections of the original course being sold for housing. In addition to being quite new, the recent floods covered some of the holes. Even with this, the course was challenging and each hole required a lot of thought. Most interesting hole to me was the par 4 6th with a blind shot over the crest of a hill. Perspective and distance were deceptive.
Included a buggy and a very clear round and will get back again. Clubhouse, pro-shop and ground staff friendly, approachable and in large numbers on the day.
Will get back again armed with some knowledge. Map provided with the round and is needed.

Played 16th March. Well priced. Club house well set out, drinks, hot and cold food, bingo, pokies. Pro-shop large and friendly. Fairways challenging, bunkers and water strategically placed, no pushover. Cannot just hit your driver, always hazards to think about. Greens excellent for a country styled course. Thoroughly enjoyed playing, the course had the better of me but I will play it many more times. Can recommend the experience.

Played yesterday and on arrival was told that the front 9 were out of play and that we would have to play the back 9 twice. Disappointed but for 22$ incl the buggy wasn’t too bad. However there were a number of players out there and so it was a busy 9 holes. The most disappointing thing was that with 9 holes out of action the maintainance staff were working on the 9 holes in use. A little bit of thought about that would have been good. The staff were friendly and the course was rather damp, in fact we only completed 16 holes before the siren went off calling us off the course just in time as a storm hit and will no doubt make the course unplayable for some time. Not an enjoyable morning out, travelled from Brisbane too far for this standard of course.

This track is getting better every week. The rain and some greens renovation in the past 3 weeks have show remarkable growth. The greens are a bit slow but are getting better all the time. Rated at 71 but plays like 75. If you hit a poor shot you pay big time. A great test that is getting better as it matures. Well worth the money. Aesthetically pleasing golf course from a distance. Some of the fairways lack decent coverage and the greens suffer from the one kilometre syndrome (good from far, far from good). Greens are bumpy in areas, inconsistant in speed and near impossible to get work on a golf ball on a hot day. It is always a disappointing feeling when you see a full gap wedge land pin high, bounce a metre in the half in the air and run of the back of the green. Pro shop staff are extremeley friendly however customer service from both the bar staff and club house management leaves a lot to be desired. The majority of members were seemed unbelievably disgruntled that visitors dare play on there golf course. At $22 for 18 and a buggy i would definately be back however full social play fees are very high compared to some much better golf courses in the area.

Played this course recently, I must say I was impressed, especially given some of the negative reactions previously. The design is very good. It is challenging and has many variations with no two holes seeming the same. You need to be accurate on most holes and it helps if you have played the course previously as the holes require placement off the tee to score well, or avoid penalties.

There are many elevation changes on the course, there is plenty of sand and water and some holes with OB. The fairways have rough patches but given the fact this course is immature that is understandable. The greens were a little slow, but in good condition. I think this course has the potential to be one of the regions outstanding courses if managed correctly. I would certainly rate it higher than most courses and given the price to pay, it may work out to be the best. It certainly wouldn’t be a good course for beginners as there may be a potential for a number of lost balls, but I am certainly not a low handicapper and i enjoyed the experience.

The staff were very helpful and the course is a good experience. I will certainly play again.

PROS

  • Variation
  • affordability
  • Holes requires placement

Cons

  • requires more maturity
  • could do with some conditioning improvements

From golf park to golf course that’s how I would describe the new Ipswich course. On the old course you could blase away and recover from anywhere but not so with the new layout with several bunkers and hazards to be wary of. A lot of thought is required for club selection on every shot which can only improve your golf in the long term. Not 12 months yet, so with some growing in still to be realised and small improvements being made each week in 2 to 3 years this course will be among the best in the Brisbane region. Some good deals on offer at the moment for a game which includes a cart. Well worth a come and try.

Re EXMEMBER comments. I play at Ipswich regularly with some mates, one of whom is a member, and Ipswich is no different to most other clubs who offer a social round package. And just remember that we can’t play on a Saturday when we want to because the members have the course to themselves, so why shouldn’t we get a deal when the course is not being used.

My mate paid $925.00 fees this year and in that he gets a $50.00 bar tab, 12 dinner vouchers (maybe worth $200.00) and a stack of range ball vouchers (maybe worth $50.00), so his real fee is about $625.00, which is what he said it was a few years ago on that old rubbishy and boring layout that the old vets used to like. As an ex-Sandy Gallop member, my mate says that $625.00 is better value than playing at that goat track over the way at Sandy Gallop and putting up with the bloke that owns it. I’d join Ipswich straight away, but I am a shiftworker and can only play a couple of times a month, and only once a month on a weekend. My mate is trying to get me to join on the new limited membership that is on offer where you pay a small membership fee, but pay a special green fee every time you play. But I am not into competitions yet, so maybe next year I’ll take that up. I’d just rather have a hit and a beer at present.

As for the new Ipswich layout, I find it hard in places, but what a great layout it is, and how good is it going to be in a few years time when the course grows a bit. Since the rain, the greens are a lot better, and the fairways are also getting a lot thicker. Yeah, it isn’t perfect, but it is a good test of golf and a lot better than the boring old layout we used to have to play. Somebody else said it is like Brookwater, and maybe it is, but nobody complains about Brookwater and I reckon Ipswich is just as good a layout and even a bit more easier for us hackers.

As for old members, well they aren’t the future of the Club are they; even more reason why young bucks like me should join, hey? As for the members not being able to play the course, have a look at the results in the paper and on the Club website. Geez, you need some really good scores to win, so maybe the course is not that hard after all, though I lose enough balls in a round.

Anyway, I’d recommend the course to anybody who likes a challenge. You need to get your game under control to play at Ipswich, but that is what golf is all about no matter where you play. This course will be one of the best in QLD in the next couple of years and I’ll be joining as soon as I can get a job off shiftwork.

I recently joined Ipswich Golf Club with relatively mild expectations given the new course is in a juvinille state. The course is tough. Mr Grady really wanted to ensure as many club golfers as possible lost a golf ball or three. The condition of the course is not good. The greens are basically unplayable and the fairways are rock hard with very little ground cover. I attribute this to the enormous amount of cart traffic allowed to use the fairways and winter in not conjusive to growth. Give it a miss, at least for a couple of years. Hoepfully the course will be tinkered with and mature into a course deserving of the landscape in inhabits.

Have played here lots on both the old and new course. The new course could be one of the best tests of golf around for a good player but the condition of the fairways and greens make it not worth the effort to get there. They are simply third rate and have been for a long time now. The layout is a Wayne Grady design and he obviously didn’t have club or older golfers in mind. They have left the club in droves because they cannot play it and some can’t even walk up the elevated tees. If they ever sort out the greens and fairways it could again host a Qld Open but even the old holes were in very average condition. Maybe a change of staff may help.Cut the rough we found a new tribe in their just recently.

I had heard that the course had changed alot but I was shocked to see the new eleven holes the other week. Mental warfare is how my marker described it. It is a great course which reminds me of Brookwater in some ways but at a tenth of the price. Can’t wait to see they other new holes. Only negative thing to say is that it wouldn’t be pleasant to walk but who cares – no cart no start. It will be awesome once the grasses mature.

Played the 11 new holes at Ipswich GC today.
WOW what a different course this will be once Wayne Grady is finished with the place. Kinda feels like Kooralbyn meets Brookwater on a beer budget at this stage (OK boutique beer).
The old course was an easy walk, not so with the new holes, certainly designed with cart hire in mind with some greens a decent walk to the next tee.
Ipswich GC I feel will certainly develope into a cracker of a course over the next 12months once all new holes open and ’bed’in.
The new layout though will be much more demanding on players, with tighter fairways and plenty of opportunity to lose balls with stray tee-shots and approach shots, something that wasn’t really an issue with the old course.
Check it out.

pretty good course, although there hasn’t been any decent rain in Ipswich for ages, which definitely shows on the course. the fairways were very dry but the greens were consistent and in good condition. not much water comes into play, so the only real hazards are the bunkers and fairly tight fairways.a good and memorable course design meant that the day was very enjoyable. and the new front 9 which is being made looks really good from what I’ve seen. it looked a little bit like Brookwater. 3.5 out of 5

I played Ipswich Golf Club recently and must say I was pleasantly surprised. The course is fairly long and is in great condition, the fairways were in good condition, the greens were rolling true and the bunkers were well prepared.

The course has 3 par 5’s and 3 par 3’s. It has a combination of doglegs, both left and right and has some significant elevation changes. The course has reasonably tight fairways, so it is important to be accurate as well as long. It is important to be selective with the club you drive with, in some cases it might be better to use an iron off the tee.

There is not a great deal of water, the members and pro staff are happy.

Best of all the price is not overly expensive. They are also redesigning the course with the first 9 being sold off and a new nine coming in. This will be designed by Wayne Grady.

PROS

  • Requires Accuracy
  • Good Condition
  • Price is cheap for the condition
  • Friendly atmosphere

Ipswich is a nice course that suits the straight hitter, some of the greens were a little ordinary for a course that holds the Queensland Open, but all-in-all it was a nice course.

The pro-Shop is reasonably stocked with some of the latest gear.

I have been invited to play Ipswich a few times and it is a great test of your skills. With tight driving holes this place will test your abilities from the outset.

Once you have sent a straight drive down the first you are met with a downhill mid iron to a moderate sized green with bunker front right and OB left.

The front nine has a couple of reachable par 5's and a couple of par 3's. As your front nine is coming near the end you are met with one of the toughest par 3's I have played. Slightly uphill 187 metre's to the green with bunkers left and right and what appears to be a false front. Accuracy and distance is the key.

Stop halfway for a cold beer in the airconditioned club house before your assault on the back nine.

Once again the back nine opens with a tight driving hole with OB right. You'll eventually hit the 13 hole with a long iron or 3 wood from the tee to a very slight dogleg right you have a mid to short iron approach to a small green with sand right. The fun doesn't stop there. When you get through the 13th you tee off the 14th (index 2) massive dam left trees right. Don't stray.

The 17th is an eye opener. Teeing through a shute of trees left and right with a bunker positioned at about driving distance on the right side. The green is guarded left by water, don't drag your mid iron.

I had an enjoyable day at Ipswich. The Pro Shop staff have been pleasant and friendly every time I have been and could not fault the service of the Clubhouse staff.

This course has held the past four QLD Opens and is a great test of golf for a reasonable price.

The best course in this area barring Brookwater (but that's another story).

Rated to be a very god course. Easy to find. Amenities in the club house, pro shop and on the course a good. 18 holes during the week will cost $20, average price. A cart for 18 hole is $30, a bit expensive. Overall, the couse is well set out, with most the fairways easy to hit as long as the play smart and true. The green on most have nice speed and are easy to moderate to play. Some are tricky and you need to read them well. Several holes are lined with either water or large bunkers, down the fairways or near the green, however, most are avoidable as long as you don't play poor shots. The worst hole on the course is the 17th. The tee area is lines for a distance with large trees down both sides. Drive straight or your in trouble, as I found out. Worse still, the green has a large lake to the left. Your approach shot must be a good one or else you will pay. Once again, as I found out. Aesthically, it is a nice course with a pleasant feel. Their are numerous birds, a variety of trees and some lovely water and garden features. Also, you have a nice view of Amberly Air force base from several holes. Overall, it was an average day out. What tarnished it for me were several things. The staff in the pro shop appeared arragant, some of the other players, definatley members, were a little stuck up, the money paid to play was not value for money and that damn 17th hole. Would play there again, but prefer to play elsewhere.
