A leisurely 1.5 to 2 hour drive from Sydney through the charming and historic Southern Highlands, Kangaroo Valley Golf & Country Resort is nestled amongst picturesque bushland in a peaceful, natural amphitheatre overlooking the valley’s majestic, rocky escarpment.

As the name implies, it’s much more than a place to stay. It’s a comfortable country resort with facilities and service to make a romantic weekend, mid-week escape, family holiday or business conference totally unforgettable.

There’s a licensed restaurant, swimming pool, beach volleyball and tennis courts. And for golfers, the undulating fairways of our Jack Newton designed par 72 championship 18-hole golf course await with unexpected challenges.

Jack’s original design has been recently extended and upgraded. Played under the watchful gaze of the many resident kangaroos, the course sweeps across the undulating valley terrain providing a tough test of golf from the back tees. From the front tees it’s a pleasurable adventure for beginners or a casual game.

So whether your idea of a good drive is taking in the vistas of Kangaroo Valley and the surrounding highlands, or sending a little white ball searing 250 metres down the centre of a lush fairway, Kangaroo Valley Golf & Country Resort offers the perfect drive.

I played this course a couple of days ago and really enjoyed the experience. Having never played the course before I was surprised that I went five under my handicap (but was playing off the whites), which made my experience even more enjoyable.
The last reviewer who appears to be affiliated with the course has covered most aspects in regard to the course, but I’ll add my two bobs worth;
The course was in great condition, apart from the bunkers. There hadn’t been rain for a few days, yet some of the bunkers were still full of water and the sand quality of the bunkers was poor. It would be worth fixing up the drainage and getting in some decent sand. You can’t just dig a hole, fill it with sand and call it a bunker. May look like a bunker but after wet weather it becomes another water hazard.
My pick of the holes were the Par 4 8th and the Par 4 15th. The 8th plays over a very deep gully with a dam at the bottom and a second smaller gully as you approach the green. From the white markers the fairway can easily be reached, however from the blues it’s a different story. As I stayed in a cabin on the 8th I got to see a lot of players teeing off from the blue (maybe they had something to prove). Although some pretty good shots were being hit I didn’t see anyone make the fairway. The 15th is a down hill dog leg right, made shorter by being down hill. Don’t be greedy, keep your tee shot well right, as hidden behind the trees on the right is a lot of water. I tried to take the dog leg out of play and it wasn’t worth finding the water.
I played mid week so the course was quiet. I enjoy an early tee off or later tee off to avoid the midday heat and it does get very hot in the Kangaroo Valley. The pro shop doesn’t open until 8am, so that is as early as you can tee off and carts had to be back at 4.30pm, which destroys the prospect of a late afternoon tee off. There was no pro, he was on leave so the girl handling the reception was also in charge of the pro shop, which kept her busy. I wouldn’t call it a pro shop, but rather a counter with a few golf balls, tees and some shirts.
As other reviewers have said it is well worth investing in a cart. This is a very steep course and unless you are extremely fit it would be a killer to do on foot. I saw plenty of people doing it on foot and they didn’t appear to be enjoying the experience.
This is a very attractive course and the scenery is spectacular. Not just well worth a round if you are in the area, it is worth going out of your way to play this course.

Established in 1983 Kangaroo Valley now measures 5719m Par 71 with four par 3s ranging from 131-190m, eleven par 4s ranging from 296-396m and three par 5s ranging from 430-467m. The other tees include the WHITES which measure 5160m Par 71 and the RED LADIES which measure 5126m Par 74.

Course has wide and lush kikuyu grass fairways and rough with scattered medium sized trees lining the hilly, undulating fairways. Most teebeds are also kikuyu grass with the 16th tee box having couch grass and the 3rd and 14th teebeds having winter rye grass. The medium sized bent greens have some poa in them and have more than subtle break with decent speed.

There are 29 bunkers on the course with 7 entirely bunkerless holes. There are also at least 12 ponds on the course with water coming into general play on the 4th, 9th, 11th, 15th, 16th & 18th holes.

Highlights include: the 352m straight 7th (index 1) plays uphill with a left-sloping fairway to an elevated bunkerless front-sloping green which from 100m out on the fairway is nearly 20m above from where you are playing your 2nd shot – club selection crucial; the 350m gentle sweeping dogleg left 8th (index 5) requires two shots over 2 gullies with OOB mounds right and villas further right to a bunkerless green; the 346m 11th (index 12) plays about 20m downhill from the elevated tee, then doglegs 60 degrees left over the pond which crosses the fairway about 100m short of the most bunkered green on the course with 3 bunkers; and the 190m 14th (index 6) with its teeshot over a deep watered gully to a green with a bunker left and anything short will roll at least halfway down the grassy gully leaving a difficult chip to save par.

Most holes, apart from the 1st, 4th, 6th & 14th, have a noticeable slope from the tee to the green. There are many short innocuous looking par 4s with only the 350m 8th, 352m 7th, 360m 10th & the 396m 3rd being longer than 350m.

The par 5s are generally short and weak as both the 9th & 18th fall approximately 40m from the tee to the green. The pick of the par 5s is the 456m slight bend left 16th (index 4) requiring a 220m teeshot to avoid water along the right, then it is a 15% slope (or 25m) uphill to the bunkerless green guarded by a deep grassy gully 50m short across the fairway.

The course distance guide is very useful with elevation profiles of each hole. The course is approximately 145-196m above sea level with the 9th & 17th teebeds being the highest points on the course whilst the lowest point on the course is along the 4th hole.

There is useful accommodation here with the cabins and villas overlooking the 7th, 8th & 17th holes.

Course access is from Mt Scanzi Road about 4km west off the village. Kangaroo Valley township is small with around 350 people about 25km (or 25 minutes) north of Nowra. Course can also be reached from the Southern Highlands (40 minutes from Bowral) via Fitzroy Falls.

Walked and played here again most recently on 23/12/2011 with $35 weekday green fees and $45 weekend green fees. Twilight golf is currently not available. Great value for money here with friendly staff and good clubhouse facilities. Call in for a round (02) 4465 0200

Just spent the weekend down in Kangaroo Valley for 3 rounds of golf. I cannot believe how beautiful the course and surroundings are. I took quite a few photos of the weekend, but the photos dont do the picturesque views any justice.

The staff were brilliant and couldnt be more helpful. The cabins were perfect and as a boys weekend went, just couldnt be better. I truly do recommend anyone travelling down the South Coast to make a booking for a round of golf.

Great course, worth the round if you are in the area. For what it is, a country course, its well kept and greens are usually in very good condition

Played Queens birthday long weekend. Well kept course, with some great holes. After midday it was quiet and I didnt wait on any tee all day.

Course suited to mountain goats, so take a cart if you don’t like walking up steep hills.

Very, very pretty golf course with some excellent holes.

The course was in good condition mostly and some of the holes are really good. The par 5’s are a bit short though and the greens the day we played were way to fluffy and slow.

Well worth a game, i’m certain you’ll enjoy it. We did.

stayed there for 2 days and played 3 rounds. Loved the views, what a stunning setting. some really fun holes with some great tee shots. some very testing holes also. greens were in good condition and fairways not too bad, a bit dry but expected this time of year. not great condition but some great holes and the scenery make it a must play. going back for 2 more days in November.

A good course with a reasonable variety of holes. Played on a saturday with an 11.30am tee off during July with 6 friends and we virtually had the course to ourselves. Course is set into the side of a mountain so if mobility is an issue for you carts are a must.

The 8th hole is a highlight, and there are some very well placed hazards on the course. The par 5, 18th is reachable in two on a dry day, but is a long carry on the second (with a downhill lie) over a hazard to a small to medium sized green. A good finishing hole. Bunkers are around, but didn’t come into play much for myself and a mate, a little toothless to be honest.

PROS

  • Elevation changes a good test of club selection.

Cons

  • Bunkering could be better, more bunkers needed, especially for the fairways.

this is a course that will test all aspects of your game from the nice straight par 4's especially the 8th to the to the deceiving par 5s on the back 9. i urge you walk this course (if fit) as it is an awsome experience. although by the 16th i was stuffed having stopped for a few refreshing brews on the 9th wich killed my game be careful of arriving early in the morning as play can be hampered by very thick fog.so if your a tree hugger leave it till later in the day.
in short i strongly suggest you stop in for an amazing day of golf.

This is a really nice course. I always enjoy playing here.

The 8th hole has spectacualr views of the surrounding mountains. You really feel quite small even though you're teeing up from the highest point on the course. The cliffs to your right run high and way out to the left you can see the incredible highlands. This is a great hole!

Staff here have always been very friendly and play here if you are in Kangaroo Valley - better still - mnake the trip - it's a magnificent drive!

Kangaroo Valley is a demanding course build into the side of the escarpment. It's hilly, has plenty of trees, plentiful water hazards and a decent supply of bunkers. Add some strongly sloped greens, a few with two levels, more than a few doglegs with high trees protecting the corners, some tight out of bounds and some steep climbs - then you have a challenge. Designed by Jack Newton, the Par 72 layout also boasts spectacular views of Kangaroo Valley and Morton National Park.

It's well worth the 2 hour trip from Sydney to play this gem of a course.

Fantastic all-round golf/weekend getaway.

My wife and I have played Kangaroo Valley a number of times now and always look forward to a weekend away down there. The course is always in beautiful condition and is long, generally quite wide and open, and always challenging. A couple of long water carries and picturesque high tees looking over the Kangaroo Valley would be highlights.

It's up and down so a cart is a good option.

We would recommend making a weekend of it and staying in one of the self contained on course cabins. Great log-fire restaurant on site, as well as the town of Kangaroo Valley which has some fantastic food and a pretty good little pub.

Definitely a 5 star weekend.
